    2 weeks out..not a pound lost!?

It depends on what you are eating your not supposed to eat anything mostly drinking your food like yogurt eggs, protein Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
  2. I am 10 days post op and I am always hungry. The first 4 days I didn't even think about food, and now I'm always hungry. I drink my water and my protein shakes too. Is there ANYTHING I can eat at this stage that won't hurt me, that is not soup, pudding, Jell-O, and yogurt. and I hate cottage cheese so there's no way I'm eating that. Oh and I had the gastric sleeve not lap band.

    18 days post op

Hi everyone. I had a gastric sleeve on September 12th 2017. In 9 days I lost 12 lbs and was ecstatic. Since my weigh in at the dr on 9.21.17 i have not lost 1lb! I am the exact same weight. I was put on soft foods on 9.22 and have been eating yogurt, eggs, chicken. Trying my hardest to get all my fluids, but averaging about 40 oz of fluid a day. Has anyone else experienced weight loss Plateau this close to the surgery date? It seems awfully soon to not be losing weight. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thank you. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G928A using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. My Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy was performed on Wednesday 9/2717. Post op I had my wife Ellen and family with me. I spent the day just recovering in the hospital. Thursday morning, still groggy, I did a swallow test with contrast in hospital; all looked good. Later that morning, the PA brought me three 1 oz cups of water and asked I take 30 minutes sipping them. Then three more over the next 30 minutes. Vitals were normal and IV removed later that morning. Prescriptions sent to my pharmacy and went home early afternoon. Going back to see the surgeon next week in office as a follow up. I am now following Dr. Garber's first month meal plan. Goal is 64 ounces of water sipped throughout the day and 60 grams of protein a day. Guidance was if I got heartburn or pressure it means slow down. Sip, not swallow, and try to stay at 1 oz per ten minutes before taking more water. Thursday my protein intake was all basically Muscle Milk - strawberry - I hated the chocolate. Friday, most of the morning and afternoon, I again stayed with strawberry protein and either Fiji water or Lipton diet decaf iced tea. Last meal Friday I braved three ounces of poached chicken breast, a pinch of salt and white pepper, chopped fine with an immersion blender with a touch of cottage cheese for creaminess and enough chicken broth to get the finer texture I wanted. Wasn't that bad. Guidance was pureed food or chopped super fine. Took pain killers as prescribed and nausea meds too just to keep any pain or nausea at bay Thursday and Friday. Popped a Gas-x chewable when the heartburn reared its head. Looking forward to Saturday. Three meals daily 4oz low fat yogurt or cottage cheese, or a scrambled/poached egg 3 ounces chicken or fish. Guidance was go with dark meat it is more likely to be more tender and moist than a breast 3 ounces chicken or fish. My wife Ellen poaches the chicken in chicken broth which I can also drink as part of my 64 ounces of water. If protein is under 60 grams add protein drink to the day. Guidance was to always wait 30 minutes after a meal before returning to sipping hydration liquids. What are you eating, cooking your first weeks post surgery?

    Stevia....yay or nay?

Four years out. I've always used fake sweeteners. In my coffee, protein shakes, protein bars and Greek yogurt mostly. Now that I'm at goal I don't avoid real sugar as much.... still isn't a regular part of my diet but I have it weekly or so.

    6 month diet before approval

I'm also on the 6 month insurance required supervised diet. I'm at the end of month 4 and have lost 48.2lbs so far. The diet my surgeon / nutritionist gave me is similar to described by ojibway above. I wasn't given a calorie goal, but rather a list of things to give up (carbonation, caffeine, sweetened drinks) and a list of foods that I need to eat daily, across 6 meals a day focusing on portion control. I usually end up between 1600-1800 calories per day with this plan. Typical day looks like: Breakfast = oikos triple zero Greek yogurt and 1 cup of oatmeal Snack = sargento "balanced break" pack Lunch = healthy choice Cafe steamers meal ( the nutritionist gave me a list of approved frozen meals) Snack = 2 pieces of low fat string cheese and a piece of fruit Dinner = 4-6oz of meat or fish, a healthy carb such as brown rice or sweet potato, and a veggie Snack = usually a repeat of either snack 1 or snack 2, or sometimes 1 serving of special K strawberry with 1cup of fairlife skim milk

Day 16 has not been easy

Yes, that is in my plan too. Technically, the only things my plan says i CANNOT eat yet are raw veggies, fruits with skins (gotta peel the skins 1st), beef and pork, grains (ie pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, popcorn, etc) and nuts. Everything else is game. I'm about 15 days post op and i was cleared to eat real food (chewed very thoroughly) after 1 week post op. My surgeon said after 1-2 weeks, our internals are healed. However, the re-routing of it all is not yet 'efficiently' working and our bodies need time to understand the new setup, if u will. That said, chicken is one of the hardest for our new stomachs because its fiberous and can be dry before chewing, dry after chewing if chewed too much, or just simply hard to digest. I like what was said above: just because ur plan says it's ok, doesn't mean your body personally is ready. Just scale back to easier to break apart foods. I've found canned tuna mixed with lite mayo, chewed generously, goes down wonderfully. Eggs, cottage cheese, morningstar spicy bean burger...those all chew up to mush and have no hangups in my pouch. But lemme tell u, I tried deli sliced turkey and holy crap...got stuck for over 6 hours! So even though I'm cleared to eat that stuff, i won't be for quite awhile!! Bottom line, u won't hurt ur pouch by eating real foods at this point, as long as u can chew it up to mostly mush before swallowing. But also, listen to ur body and stop eating things it doesn't like right now. Try those things again in a month or so. We're works in progress! Good luck! [emoji4] PS. Vomiting every time u eat solid foods (even when eating dime sized pieces and chewing thoroughly) is NOT normal. Scale back to liquids for a week, then try easing in again (like with eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt). If ur vomiting again, i highly recommend seeking medical assistance.

    After first week out ???

I had plain vanilla yogurt that first week. I put a little milk in it to thin it out. It was a great way to get protein and NOT a protein shake:-)

Day 16 has not been easy

I'm at day 16 or 17, so we should be similar. My doctor's plan lists the foods you did, but follows by stating they need to be mashed or pureed. The nutritionist told us to think the consistency of applesauce. And that we should be able to mash with our tongues (you know, pressing against the roof of our mouth) any remaining bits. I've successfully had, in 1/4 cup servings, the following after blending with a hand immersion blender. Or you could use a regular blender or a small food processor. 1) oatmeal with 1/2 tbsp peanut butter melted into it--when blending, I had to add a good bit of milk bit by bit because I cooked it too much 2) Hormel turkey chili with beans--but some turkey bits were too hard and I had to spit out (don't eat in front of anyone :-)) 3) Chef Boyardee beef-a-roni--like with turkey, some beef bits were too hard 4) Chicken noodle soup with 1/2 noodles removed to save carbs and then blended. This stays liquid but is more substantial than the strained stuff Things that I DID NOT have the BLEND: 1) Grits cooked really liquid with cheese. I added about 1/4 scoop of unflavored protein powder to add protein. I use Isopure. You can order online. 2) Plain yogurt. Either plain Greek or Kroger Carbmasters (don't scoop up any fruit pieces) 3) Sugar free pudding For some good suggestions from someone who has gone through this, check out www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com I hope this helps you out. Your terrible reaction IS NOT common. I think if you go for softer, but high protein foods, you will feel better.
  10. Hi all, I finally did it. I got sleeved yesterday. I flew all the way over the ocean to Mexico Tijuana to have my procedure done by dr. Jaime Ponce de Leon Palomares in the Int Hospital. Ill try do breakdown my journey up to this moment (Excusez moi mon French, English is not my primary language. Neither is French :-) ) Transportion. Like i said a had to fly in cause i don't live in the USA. Beautiful country though i vacation here as much as possible. I flew into San Diego and got picked up by the Drs. driver, named Sandra. She got there a little late, but i kept my cool. She is a happy chatty girl, so if you ever get to have a ride with her, you will surely not get bored. The drive from San Diego to Tijuana takes about 20 minutes. Clinic/hospital My surgery was performed at INT Hospital. Please do not be alarmed by the size of the establishment. It is not a large facility but squeeky clean. The nurses are such a doll, they check up on you like constantly. Every 20 minutes someone is knocking on my door to check my stats or the drain or give me my medication. They genuinely seem to care about their patients. when i got there, they checked me in, i had to sign all kind of waivers and give my emergency contacts, after that i was off to the labs to take blood. Every turned out ok, with the exception of my blood pressure. it was very high (which surprised me cause i really had no sign or inconvenience at all, but again i hardly go to my gp so god knows how long i have been walking around with my elevated blood pressure. They gave me meds to regulate it, and told my as soon as i got home i had to pay my doctor a visit to have it monitored. But they assured me it will get most probably regulate when my weight drops. Ponce de Leon He is a very kind man, he only speaks Spanish though so for the ones that don't speak Spanish this may be a language barrier, he explained the procedure to me and took his time to answer my questions. Why did i choose him? I spend a lot of time researching, he comes highly acclaimed by his peers, he has a good record and teaches other surgeons, just google his name and tijuana, and his results should come right up. I was hesitant between him and Cordoba, i choose Ponce because of the prices. I paid 4700 USd for the procedure, with meds , 2 nights at the clinic and 1 night at the hotel. After that his assistant came by, very jolly man, great smile he answered all my questions again, took a selfie with me and sped of the prepare for surgery. After that the internest/lab doctor give me ok for the procedure so off i went to the surgery room Surgery they got my a surgery robe with my big behind hanging out, very embarrassing, but again, all is fair in war, love and surgery land. they hooked me up to my IV and rolled me to surgery waiting room. when i got there a man just came out and was crying like a new born baby which scared me a little bit.. but again, women are much stronger than men so i know i got this.. :-) The anaestatist came by to greet, very jolly, singing and cracking jokes, he explained the procedure again and promised me to not let me die on the operating table. He hook me up with a tranquilizer, after that i dozed off. they woke me up and i had to walk like 10 steps to the surgery room, they put me on a surgical bed with my arms spread like our savior Jesus christ and after that i remember nothing. I woke up in the recovery room feeling extraordinary well, only very sleepy. After a while they rolled my bed to my room and since then I've been here, sleeping, walking a lot to get rid of these gasses, with a very empty stomach i havent eaten in nearly 4 days. Im only allowed to sip on ice. Ponce de Leon and his assistant check up on my daily and explained they took a good 80% of my stomach. Tomorrow the will perform a leak test. and if everything goes will i can move to the hotel. The nurses keep coming in to check on me and to make sure im comfortable, all this with a genuine smile. They really seem to enjoy their work. I have nothing but praise for their job. I had my first shower today. it was heavens. i got my diet for the next 30 days, it seems im only allowed to drink water, broth, yogurt, premier protein shakes and juices.. no wonder i will lose weight :-). i alse got a cd rom with my surgery video on it, but i have a MAC so i can't insert it in my computer. hopefully i can watch it tomorrow in the hotel Greetings Macy

  12. My surgery was 09/21/17 (8 days ago). I have no hunger at all & no interest in food. Maybe that will change in the near future? Went back to work yesterday & my incisions are still very sore. As of yesterday, down 10 pounds in 7 days. I need to exercise though. I love reading everyone's posts. We are all doing great! These struggles in the beginning, hopefully will be the toughest part. I'm on the soft foods stage: soup, yogurt, pudding & popsicles. I will say, even though, no hunger, I can't wait to be able to 'crunch' on food. I'm a chip lover Post Op & Dietician appointment this coming Monday.

  14. For me, it's aftertaste where my issue has been these last 7 weeks. I'm much more aware of aftertaste...like with different waters, etc. My tastes haven't changed otherwise, but I do find that while I adore Greek Yogurt, sometimes just the thought of yogurt now makes me go NOPE. Maybe it's the thicker texture, not sure. Hope that passes soon, miss having it.
  15. I've had no issues getting my protein in since week 2 postop without protein shakes. During the healing phase it was all about milk, protein kefir (40g in 16oz), yogurt, cottage cheese and homemade broth. After I was on solids: beans, tuna, eggs, and nuts. Every meal features protein containing food. I didn't consume food that didn't have protein until I could eat 3-4oz solid meat at a sitting. Now I can have a couple meals with low protein count (still eating 6 times a day). That's how i get in fruit and veggies.
  16. @KH1958 here is sort of a little recap My program is very different than in the US. The liquids, puree and solids stages are over in 4 days. Meaning day of surgery, nothing, day after clear liquids, then full liquids/puree, puree and solids by day 4. We had to chew everything to puree, but we could eat solids. There were a few exceptions. No seeds what so every, even from strawberries, no fresh bread, no food that could cause bloating. Meals should not last longer than 20min, and no more than 5 oz a meal. I meal prep, so I eat a lot of the same stuff throughout the week. Like I'll make stew, portion it out, freeze and have it basically every day. I eat 4-5 meals a day still, all around 5oz. If I have a salad it's more. At least 3 of them are warm. From an very early stage I got all my protein from food, and I think that is the key. A lot of people rely on the shakes for way too long. At this stage I eat anywhere from 900-1500 kcal a day, usually under 1200. I started weight training at 3 weeks out. I was cleared then. I had to because I have a bad back and have to keep it strong. And with the surgery you lose muscles as well, so I had to make sure I lost as little as possible. I walk everywhere. I was used to walking before surgery, but I have stepped up my game since surgery. I walk about 13 000 - 20 000 steps a day. I do strength training twice a week at this point. I also swim. I have been on a break all summer, but practice has started again. For now It's only once a week for 2 hours/4000m but after Christmas it will be 3 times a week. I used to compete as a kid. I don't really do other cardio. Some hiking. A normal day for me looks like this. I get up, get ready, walk to work. As I walk, I drink about 12 oz of water Once I get to work I'll have 8.5 oz iced latte machiatto light (80 kcal) Then I'll have protein rich yogurt, lately I have added flax seeds and sesame seeds (with the coffee it's at least 20g of protein) I wait 30 min and start drinking water. Between now and next meal I'll get 12-24 oz 2h later I'll take iron and bariatric multi vitamin 1h later I'll have a portion of food, 90% of the time it's stew made from lean meat, potatoes and carrots (around 20g of protein) Wait 30min and then back to water. Again between 12-24oz I try to get my calcium supplement somewhere in here 3h after previous meal I'll eat again. Often chicken with some cream cheese sauce, or chicken and veggies (at least 20g of protein) 30 min and then water 12-24 oz I leave work and get home. I'll often have fish and salad, or some kind of meal and salad. (20g of protein) 30min and then water Depending on what I'm doing I'll have another meal again warm, or just a snack, often protein rich yogurt with berries or just some string cheese. Once a week I take a high dose D vitamin and every day I take B12 drops Depending on how much calcium I have gotten through food, I'll take another supplement at this point. I land on 80-100g of protein from food a day. I should get minimum 60. Hope that helps you a little.

Day 16 has not been easy

My plan had me drinking water and broth days 1-7. Milk and protein shakes days 8-14. Days 15-21 were more like yogurt and pudding. Creamy and smooth, and just thick enough to need a spoon instead of a straw. Chicken and broccoli? I couldn't have imagined it.
  18. This very issue (weight vs. volume) confused the heck out of me preop, and the source of the confusion was the general idea that your stomach can hold 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup, etc. Now that I'm postop, I realize that the stomach doesn't work that way. Liquids go pretty much right through. I can eat 8oz of soup, but only 3 oz dense steak. So ultimately volume doesn't mean a thing. Weigh your food, and start out with 2oz of anything that is thick enough you need a spoon for. Eat slowly and stop at the first sign of fullness. You might only get down 1oz at first. Once you are easily eating 4oz of cottage cheese or yogurt, it's time to pay attention to protein and calorie goals, and make a plan for how to meet those goals. I'm 6 months out, and still stop at 4oz cottage cheese because ........ drumroll please.... 4oz is a serving! For the first time in my life, the recommended serving sizes of foods actually mean something....

Day 16 has not been easy

I have tried snippets of stuff I did an egg salad today and got sick to the stomach, I ended up throwing up some and the rest just sat there like a weight. My doctor says sometimes we have to be hard headed to find out there are certain things we cannot eat right now. So I go and find the yogurt I'm allowed to eat in various flavors. HELP! Portion sizes

Volume and weight are the same thing for different substances. Liquids are measured by volume - 4 liquid ounces of milk or yogurt (or a 1/2 cup liquid measure which is 4 oz.) Chicken or beef is measured by weight - 4 ounces is 4 ounces (which is slightly larger than a deck of cards or about the size of the palm of your hand if you don't have a scale or are out.) Most scales will measure fluid ounces and weight. But a good set of liquid meauring cups (the glass kind with the handle) are worthwhile to have around.
  21. I'm 13 months out. My average day runs 60-100 grams of protein depending on what I'm doing. If I'm fencing - 2.5 hours which burns about 1000 calories, I'm up near 100 grams Morning protein shake - powder made with fair life milk - 31 grams protein Oikos Triple Zero yogurt - 15 grams of protein - snack in the am Quest protein bar 20 g - dinner before fencing Lunch - chicken salad with mixed greens - 14 grams After fencing snack - another Oikos - 15 grams - That's 95 grams. four ounces of salmon is 23 grams. 60-65 is tough right after surgery because drinking is tough your stomach is healing. But if you eat protein first, you don't need to be worried.
  22. GassyGurl

    Solid food

I'm the same way. I can barely eat 3oz of anything dense. I feel stuffed, yet satisfied. I don't mind it because I enjoy the food just as much as before. The most I've eaten of anything is 5.3oz of yogurt. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

    After first week out ???

I know there are a lot of views on weighing yourself daily. I weighed (and still do) everyday but I don't let it bother me if the scale doesn't move or fluctuates slightly upward. After years of not wanting to know what the scale said, it is important for me to weigh in everyday to stay accountable. I'm six months out and getting closer to my goal weight, things have slowed down but that is to be expected. Stick to your plan and you will have amazing results. Oh, and I started dairy (greek yogurt, cottage cheese and ricotta cheese) around 3 weeks maybe a little less.

    Eating is a chore

I like refried beans with a little plain Greek yogurt.

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

Ok, so this is what I've gleaned so far.. Muscle cells have a "back door" for glucose to enter without needing insulin. Fat cells and the liver need insulin. Exercise seems to be the way to decrease insulin resistance (IR). Higher dairy consumption is linked to increased IR. (The study didn't count cheese.. it looked at liquid milk and yogurt). Omega 3 fish oils had some protective effects for prevention of IR, but once the resistance is established, it can't reverse it. Calorie restriction alone had a small effect on IR. Exercise alone had no effect on IR. Exercise combined with caloric restriction had a big effect. The US consumption of red meat has decreased since the 1960's, but chicken consumption has gone up dramatically. Our combined meat, chicken, and fish consumption has increased from 110 pounds a year (per capita) to 150 pounds a year. Our added sweeteners have increased dramatically. In 1820 we consumed about 8 pounds a year of added sweeteners. In 1920 we consumed about 75 pounds of added sweeteners, and consumption leveled off until about 1980 when it began climbing again, up to a high in 2000 of about 110 pounds per person, per year. It's gone down slightly, but still around a hundred pounds a year or so. These are rough estimates, but the idea that we're eating 1/3 of a pound of sugar (or HFCS) per day is sickening. Our added fats have increased from a little over 30 pounds per person to over 50 pounds per person between 1970 and 2010. The biggest jump was right before the year 2000 when there was a dramatic increase in added cooking/salad oils (specifically soybean oil). Saturated fat consumption from beef tallow/lard, and butter have remained consistent and low. As much as these authors want to point to red meat and butter as causing all these problems, these are not the foods that have increased! We've increased our fructose (in high fructose corn syrup), our chicken, and our soybean oil. What does it all mean? Well, I haven't finished yet.. but the simple answer is to decrease your calories and increase your exercise. Here is an interesting chart showing fatty acid composition of various fats/oils. http://web.pdx.edu/~wamserc/C336S12/fat.pdf
