Weight gain-is it normal?
FLORIDAYS replied to MarcyLoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor said no...but I am convinced that the gas they shoot you up with is the reason for an early weight gain. LOL He said its because your body goes into a protective mode for a few days after surgery thus saves anything you put in your body. I dont know what to believe but can tell you after 2 weeks of liquid and 1 week of mushies ...unless you are drinking fat ladened milk shakes you should lose weight! Stay off the scale. -
I’m Getting IUD-2months before Surgery
Sleeve1stFitNext replied to BeckyVSG2b's topic in The Gals' Room
I had the IUD after I had my surgery. Prior to my Pre-op, I was advised to get off my hormonal birth control (At the time was on Depot for Endometriosis). I do not believe that the Mirena affects weight loss or weight gain like other birth controls do. I did not see any difference in my weight or it affecting my weight. However, everyone is different and it could affect your weight. -
Today marks a month since surgery and I feel pretty great. Of course, it's hard not to feel great when you drop 34 pounds in 31 days. I know the first month loss is special and rarely repeated so I am just going to enjoy that number for a few days. I will say that it is now apparent that I am one of the blessed (cursed?) people who can eat pretty much anything without negative physical effects or complications. I haven't done anything crazy but I am going journal shopping tomorrow and will begin seriously policing what I am eating and what excercise I am getting. I gave myself a month to adjust to surgery but I want to work on developing some lifelong habits so I don't have to ever deal with this again. I want to relax and enjoy life, but I hope I stay ever-vigilant for the carelessness and poor practices that led to the weight gain. I am really scared of backsliding now or one day in the future. At the one month mark, I constantly find myself comparing what I eat now to what I could and often did eat before surgery. The sheer amount of food I used to put away in one sitting much less an entire day now fascinates me. Anyone else having these moments?

Birth control post op
AC274132 replied to AC274132's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was concerned about weight gain with the depo (slightly concerned about reaction as well)... I did hear the same thing about the pill and would not like to take the chance finding out. LOL I was advised against the iud because I do not have any kids and issues with placement when you do not have children. I am concerned about putting more hormones into my body as well as side effects. I have thought about the nexplanon implant, but no long term studies, which makes me nervous too. I had a weird dream that it grew out of my arm and I ended up with cancer, dramatic yes!! My cousin also had the implant and ended up with thyroid issues, another friend bled out and became anemic with the implant, everyone is different, but nothing I want to go through! I'm kind of at a stand still with what form to use. The obvious of abstinence and condoms, but I want to make absolute sure and double up. So much to consider!! -
Try sprintec. I was on it for years before my surgery . Then placed on ortho-tri-cyclen lo and it messed my cycle all up after 9 months . I'm back on sprintec again and love it . It's cheap ( no co pay for my insurance ) and it's a low dose one so there's less chance of a weight gain . I've been taking it since January , even through my post op .

Hi everybody I was wondering if any of you had a weight gain shortly after surgery? My sleeve surgery was Monday of this week. Now its Thursday and Im up 10 pounds from the weight on Monday. Isnt that a kick in the pants?

In addition to the dreaded 3 week stall you may have pin pointed why the scale is showing a weight gain; you're bloated and constipated. There are many solutions to that; colace stool softener, milk of magnesia, miralax, benefiber, prune juice, a tsp of epsom salt in organic grapefruit juice to name just a few. Since you can't exercise, walk. Walk at least 30 minutes every day and drink you water/fluids. It will all get the plumbing moving. Most importantly stay off the scale. It will make you insane. Take your measurements instead. and every month take them again. Even when you are stalling if you are on program, the measurements will change when the scale doesn't.

Weight gain
slimntrimshel replied to princess of Monaco's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Princess, I'm on my preop and gained weight. But the few days before I had all type of last meal crap. That I didn't even really want. But my psyche almost convinced me I needed. Smh. But anyway the morning of day three of preop I had gained 3lbs. But I was actually following the preop diet it was just the crap had finally metabolized itself into weight gain. Any who I'm on day five now and I've lost those three pounds I gained in two days and think it will continue through next week. Could this be what happened to you? -
I've just weighed myself and I've put on 12lbs in the past 4 weeks! Part of the reason will be that 4 weeks ago I had shoulder surgery and have been off work since, so a lot less active - the other reason ofcourse will be all the goodies that I have surrounded myself with thinking that I was too strong of mind to be tempted.. and I had a bit of the 'i'm thin and can eat anything' mentality.... oh how wrong I've been. Tomorrow I'm starting back on the Protein shakes - not sure at this moment if I will just have the Protein Shakes or if I should have some sort of meat product for a main meal.. either chicken or beef. Any thoughts or ideas out there? I take my Vitamins and supplements daily, so no chance of me not getting those in and I drink plenty fluids too - although not plain Water, its water with crystal light which I realise isn't ideal, but its the only way I get my fluids in. I couldn't drink plain water unless its ice cold.

Has anyone with Bipolar Disorder taken Seroquel after VSG?
erinkath replied to erinkath's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@OKCPirate- thanks for the insight and the website! I def think being back on my meds is the way to go, but I can definitely see that based on my "new" stomach, some doses may end up being too much as I continue to lose. But, at least I'm on the way (in both senses). And I trust my surgeon, so I think it'll be OK- I have tried a lot of meds over the years and Seroquel (even with the side effect of weight gain) worked best, and my surgeon thinks this combo is a good one for the VSG and my mental health in general. All of my doctor's can see the other's notes, so it's being monitored. Like you said, there's no one right answer, we all react differently! Thanks again for the advice!! -
Hi all, my deal isn't stress it's the last supper thing. I am going to be banded on 01-06 and I can't stop eating everything! I am right there with Travelinsnorkel. I have no pre op diet and I didn't even get a raised eyebrow from the doc at my 10 lb weight gain in the last month. I am really looking forward to the surgery and then the liquid diet so I can finally stop eating! I hope it all goes well.

Sleeved 5 days ago, was wondering how many calories I should be taking in?
Lorraine_2013 replied to thebabycakes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Never been a big eater. Once a day. Which is where my weight gain comes into play. I haven't eaten a thing and I know if I was told I could I wouldn't be able to. I DO however have hunger pains and its annoying me. I know my body has calories stored and I'm not dying. -
So after 6 months of tests and appts I was called by the nurse at my surgeons office to tell me that my surgery was denied. I am HEARTBROKEN. ???? I have been though so much this year. As I started this journey, one month in, my 37 year old husband had a heart attack. Which then required a triple bypass because of 3 blockages. We made it through 20 days in the hospital, 6 days in the cardiac ICU. We both quit smoking, and I was determined to keep going forward with this. I kept my appts and tests even with him in the hospital. Just so I could have this done and we can BOTH start our new lives together. Because when he was in the hospital I could barely BREATH let alone eat. I lost 15 pounds. Now because I quit smoking and my husband is recovering slowly but is recovering nicely, I began to eat. I'm starving. I'm following exactly what I should and I put on 10 pounds. I started a celexa for depression and blood pressure meds a few months ago. I was denied because of the weight gain through the 3 month nutrionalist appts. I am so sad, I am so depressed. I feel defeated. I plan on appealing. I don't know how to pick myself up from this. Thanks for reading, advice would be greatly appreciated. Katie

After being denied cause of a weight gain over 6 months, Aetna does have the 3 month program. It's all I got left so I have been doing it. Not too hard in my first month I have lost 10 pounds. U won't be done till October. Sigh!!! But better late than never!! I can't imagine they would deny me for losing weight!!! Lol

Celexa is notorious for causing weight gain. Your surgeon's office should be able to appeal successfully showing that your weight gain coincided with the start of the Celexa. That being said, it might be worth it to look into other medications that are less likely to cause weight gain so you're not struggling after surgery. I'd also avoid Zyprexa for the same reason, but you might try Paxil if you are taking the medication for anxiety/panic attacks. If you need medication for depression, try Wellbutrin or Luvox but I'd stay away from Effexor (very strong and hard to get off of), Zoloft and Lexapro. All of those are known to cause a lot of weight gain. I hope this helps and you get approved soon!

This freaking Standstill
Victoria bunnag replied to iamblessed1225's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone. I've been snacking and sure enough I am 4 lbs. Heavier. I can bearly eat anything at meals, but have been eating a lot of yogurt. I bought desserts and I'm ashamed. Do any of you know of anyone who has done this. I had lost 31 lbs. In 1 month and I was so proud. I know what the weight gain is from, but I am constipated, too. I did not have this surgery, just to gain 4 lbs.back. I'm so sad. I was doing so well. I'm so sorry to whine. Will I be okay??? -
I am 3 years out of surger, I have lost 240 lbs (started at 444 lbs). I recently gained 80 lbs back in the last 2 months. I had an endoscopy completed last week, now I am just curious as to what is next now that I found that my band has erroded into my stomach... I didn't even notice till I started to see the weight gain. I know this isn't normal but I want to know if it is correctable? does this mean that I will need the other surgery rather than the band? :confused2:

Hey all, Im in month 1 of my pre op program because my insurance requires 4 visits/2 months. I had my first visit and met the dietician and surgeon. I wasn't technically told to lose weight yet, but I already started to try and diet because I knew that is going to be asked of me at some point. But...somehow, with my luck, I gained like 3-4 lbs. Has anyone else gained after the 1st visit. I go on Tuesday back for my 2nd appt and im somewhat embarrassed that I actually gained weight. Do they weigh you with every visit and report it to the insurance company, or do I have time to save myself and be more strict with dieting over the next two months. Do they actually try to get approval from the insurance right away, or you go thru the 3 months first then they try and get approval. I just don't know if im gonna be denied right away because I already gained a few pounds. Anyone go thru this?

3 Years Post Op-1 Year Post Gall Bladder Removal And Gaining Weight. Need Help, Please
allamrcnwmn posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi ya'll. I had my lap band about 3 years ago. I lost 80 pounds and was doing great. Then I had severe pain and had to have my gall bladder removed (and 3 stones that were stuck in my liver removed). After that I have had steady weight GAIN. I am so frustrated! I started at 320lbs, got down to 240 and now am at 300 again. Anyone know what I can do to reverse this??? I also moved to West TN and had to see a new surgeon. There are no support groups, only 1 doctor an hour away. I really feel lost here. -
1 week post-op: how many lbs lost?
kbinaz replied to LiseSeattle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I somehow lost 12 pounds the first week. Then I never lost one more pound for at least two months. Like everyone says, you have to think about a year from surgery and figure you are going to have lost at least 52 pounds then and not worry about when the pounds are lost. I gain 4 pounds every month the week before my TOM - I don't think I really gain those 4 pounds but it still freaks me out to see the scale go up. Weight gained/lost right after surgery is not really gained or lost so try to keep looking at the overall picture. You aren't losing lap band weight until you get at least one fill. -
I mostly stayed on the stouts and I was fine - about 6 pints is my limit for the night. No hangovers, no throwing up, no weight gain. It was a grand time!

When are we actually able to call ourselves thin?
RJ'S/beginning replied to MichiganChic's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Interesting way of thinking. But the flux will happen whether you want it to or not. It is the body's way of dealing with excess calories. Metabolism dictates how the calories are burned so if we are unlucky to have a metabolism that does not work like a freight train spiraling out of control. We will fluctuate in weight. Up and down. but it is up to us to keep it under control. that 10 lb goal to settle the fear of gaining it all back in the future. But our minds will continue to play tricks on us for the rest of our lives. There will always be a voice in our heads that tell us we will fail. And that even 10 lbs will be too much. I am trying so hard to come to terms with my 6 lbs I have gained back. I know it is because my muscles are starting to form again and that is adding weight. I think I look better with muscle definition again...lol. My sister called me yesterday. She feels that she will not lose the weight. She is just over a week out. This is and will always be our monkey on our backs. We will always worry about weight gain. And in a sense we should. But not to the point where it dominates our lives. That is the panic that envelopes many who travel this path. Skinny is a state of mind. Healthy is the the goal. Active in our lives and a new outlook on life. They are so important..... And looking amazing in a little black dress..... -
Everyone says grazing is a sure way back to weight gain. My skinny friends never eat more than one piece of pizza

Weight loss that stalls, plateaus or ends in a person gaining back more weight than they originally lost are all forms of yo-yo dieting. This see-saw pattern of weight loss versus weight gain can go on for years. It is never about being greedy, and never about a lack of willpower. It is, however, a repetitive cycle of behavior of the emotional eater who self-sabotages their weight loss success due to a number of key habitual, responses many of which exist below conscious awareness. There are many examples of when self-sabotaging behavior around food continues after WLS. It seems that the more people who commit to surgery without fully resolving their emotional reasons for bingeing, compulsive sugar cravings, zoned out or mindless grazing, and disordered eating in general then the more people who post-WLS will continue to struggle with emotional eating. Therapists Sally Baker and Liz Hogon specialize in resolving emotional eating. They see a growing number of clients post-WLS in their individual practices in London, England and Melbourne, Australia. Endless over thinking about food, and a whole range of compulsive behaviors can continue after surgery. Even the feelings of dissatisfaction about amount of weight lost post-WLS is just an aspect of the negative self-belief that can dominate the thought processes and feelings of someone in the grip of emotional eating. Changes can take place, and belief systems that no longer serve a person can be released and replaced with a more positive, and helpful framework. Sally and Liz have found from their work that as many of the emotional drivers, and reasons for carrying excess weight in the first place are below conscious awareness then that is where the therapy work needs to happen for change to really embed and be sustained.

Hi! I was banded May 6th, 2008! I lost almost 100lbs. Then I got pregnant and I am now starting over. It was really hard to watch my weight go back back up during my pregnancy. Afterwards I did not want to go back and have my band refilled because of my weight gain! I gained around 70 lbs from my pregnancy. I had planned to loss more weight before I got pregnant but that was not God's plan. I am starting over and a littled discouraged when I add what I have now lost to what was lost and realizing that I would be almost at my ideal weight now!
