  1. Hi there -- I am scheduled for surgery on 2/1. I am on clear liquid pre op diet (broth, Jello, popsicles, etc.) without any Protein, and expect to be on the same diet post surgery, so far it has been 5 days and I have 10 days ahead of me. I feel really weak and exhausted. Has anyone else faced this? I am hoping it is like other things where once you hit a wall and move on it gets better ... wishful thinking, I suppose. Thanks. Cynthia

    2 weeks without Protein

I wish it was a mistake, it says very clearly no protein, no dairy, in big letters at the bottom. I think I will suffer through this week, and ask if I can "break" the rules post op, just so my body has something to help it heal!

    Sick Of Protein Drinks!

I hear ya !!! I'm 6 months post op and not very fond of them either but they are the best form of protein. Can you maybe change flavors or brands ?? Warning - don't even look at the protein shots they are absolutely discusting !!!! My doc wants me to have minimum 64 grams of protein daily, now that I am on regular food I do get more protein from food and will eliminate the shakes all together soon. Milk (low fat), Cottage cheese, yogurt, nuts, beans etc. are all high in protein. But you are only 2.5 weeks post op so probably still on liquid right? To get a extra bang I would make my shake with low fat milk to have some extra protein. Hang in there sweetie, the protein is a must to maintain health/nutrition and hair !!!
  4. Anyone else sick of Protein drinks? I am 2 1/2 weeks post op and can barley stomach them! I fell like I have to choke them down! Anyone else feeling this way? Suggestions? surgerversary: sept 24th 2012. Starting weight: 240 Today's weight: 222!

    Got a date !

I am so super happy !! I got a date, march 17 ! I'm nervous but so excited at the same time. What I am upset about and why I am posting this thread is because the doctor at my program recommends 2 weeks off to get back to work and I am a nurse and work at a rehab center ( people post surgery ) and they will only give me one week off which would be march 17 - march 24. Exactly 7 days off. Did anyone go back to work quickly after surgery ? When did you feel ' back to normal ' ? Thanks in advance for answers ! Xo

    Aetna playing games

I'm giving Aetna the "stink eye" smiley for you! They are such jerks! I'm pulling for you though. Last week I sent my paperwork into the state of Michigan for an external review, so with the backwards intestines and exception debacle I'm sure the surgery will be approved. Lets just hope Aetna can come to an agreement on yours soon. Let us know what happens!

I really need help and advice

Well first of all you have lost 45 pounds. That is great. It has not been easy but you did it. That said, it sounds like you are getting close to your "sweet spot" but not there yet. Is there another dr affiliated with your dr so maybe you could see that dr instead of the one you are seeing now? Your current doc doesn't sound like she is trying to work with you. Have you told her how you feel? It may not change anything but it couldn't hurt. I can only say that you may have to really speak up for yourself. If she says things about you sneaking m&m's that is a real insult and I would tell her so. If you get a fill and within 2 weeks you still fill nothing call her up and tell her that it isn't working. Ask her what she suggests. I know how hard it is to stand up for yourself cos a lot of us overweight girls just have that problem. But you are a new you now. If you don't speak up and try to get some satisfaction she probably will continue to treat you the same way. Also, I have found what I eat makes a big difference in how long I can go without being hungry. I try to eat foods that "stick" with me for a while. I really like diced chicken breast with a little mayo and just about a half an ounce of fat free refried beans. I can go for hours and I haven't eaten 300 calories! I have hunted around on the internet and on this site too for food ideas. Also, is there a nutritionist affiliated with your dr who can give you an idea of what may help as far as foods that keep you full longer? I am just trying to think of things that will help you. So many people have helped me in the 7 months since I've had lap band, I want to help now too. Let me know if there is any thing else I can do to help. You are not alone. Hang in there. I will keep my eye out for your postings and try to help. Pam
  8. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm not known for my patience! I was hoping for even a pound or two down just to give me that extra bit of hope. I feel tired all the time and I know my body is lacking in something to keep me alert, but I don't know what to do. I'm taking vitamins, B supplements, calcium and I'm very hydrated. I would think that my body would be content and was to get rid of some more fat, but alas it does not. I guess it's hard to evict a long time resident. I suppose I need to focus on my mid range goal of another 25 pounds by Christmas Day when we leave for a week of skiing and I have to fit into a new pair of ski pants that I bought a size too small. That is my main focus. My old ski pants aren't flattering, the new ones make my ass look good! Now if they'd just fit around my waist. Perspective- keep everything in perspective. I think I'll go out and get a manicure and go shopping today. I'm treating myself for the past two weeks that I have done well. I did lose 11 pounds after all. Better than gaining.

    "STUCK" in Vegas

Thanks for the advice Sparkplug. I too have no fill in and dont want any since I'm losing about 2 lbs per week like this. I don't want to be more restricted than I am. I must be more careful when eating out with friends. I do think the excitement has something to do with it. Also talking too much when I eat out. I only had 2 bites of scrambled egg & bacon ? ? ? Guess it was the bacon. You are doing great 90 lbs lost is awesome. I still am happy with the band......I could have never lost 30 lbs so quickly. CAT
  10. I'm 4 weeks out now my lower back is killing me going to the clinic if it's not better ??? A bladder infection

    Water... ugh.

Crystal light won't affect the stall. The stall is your body's way of adjusting. Mine lasted two and a half weeks and some have lasted up to several months for others. You want to up protein and be patient. I drank Crystal Light and still do but alternate between that and plain water, with plain water being my main source of liquid. You shouldn't have any restriction on liquid at all. I did cut out the protein shake, which helped me, not sure how much meat you eat so feel unsure you want to cut that out. Walking more now helps, and I'm losing a pound a day. I have no issues, even eating one small scoop of ice cream with a cookie last night, and waking up a pound and a half lighter. (First and last time eating ice cream for a long time, I had no dumping syndrome.) The stalls are hard but normal. There is no dreaded "three week stall", it's just one of several plateaus you will hit. I will say you may wish to not drink crystal light due to fake sweetener that's in it, still having said that I drink it once in a while when water is too redundant. I personally don't think you ought to return to all fluids - you need to eat every three or so hours to keep your metabolism working. It's the yo-yo dieting that ruined the ability to lose to begin with. Just stick with 1-2 oz of food. Measure out 4oz, put half away and eat when you feel hungry. My doctor told me to expect a severe stall after I started solid food and that's exactly what I got. I'm down 53 pounds since May 1st. Good luck.

    Swimming

I was told no bath for two weeks. Shower only! No swimming in my pool for 4 weeks, and no public swimming for 6 weeks. Banded 7/5/2012
  13. I am 2 weeks post op and I feel like I eat too much. I can eat about 3/4 C. of refried beans. I had some soft raviloi, and a yogurt. I can eat the whole yogurt cup. I wasn't able to eat that much last week. Is this normal? I feel like I am hungry a lot, and I can eat more than I have been. I try not to. I am sure it is head hungry going on...HELP!

    Mental Issues

I agree with previous comments. Don't think about what you used to be able to eat. This is going to be a new normal for you. At three weeks out I was on soft foods and my NUT included hard boiled eggs cut up in egg salad. But, also, I could only eat 1/4 cup of food at that time. I had a few instances of eating a little too fast and missing the full signal until it was almost too late, and let me tell you that you really don't want to realize that too late or you will feel like poo! So, I really did just measure everything out into 1/4 cup then 1/3 cup and eating slowly. Now, at almost five weeks out I can eat a little faster, but I still measure everything out. Most foods I can get 1/2 cup of, but not always. Sometimes, I get the signal after five bites or so and I stop. I also use very small utensils (cocktail forks and demitasse spoons) to limit the size of the bite I take. Items like dark meat chicken take me longer to eat though as I have the chew the heck out of them to get them to go down well.

Had "the Talk" With My Hubby

So, my husband's aunt and cousin and I are heading to Mexico in 8 Weeks for surgery. I have a love/hate relationship with my mil, and she has a big flapping mouth. None of the three of us want dh's mother to know why we are going on "vacation", so I strictly told my hubby that he is NOT to tell his mother anything other than we are going on a girls retreat to celebrate the cousins upcoming wedding. Lol, well, my hubby didn't care for me telling him not to tell his mom. He became defensive of her! I quickly told him is is not his mothers business to know our private business. I'm worried that my dh will spill the beans and upset his aunt and cousin. Help!

I Think I Am Eating Too Much

Wow thats amazing I am almost 23 weeks out and I still can only eat 1/2C. I understand the size of the new stomach is different with each surgeon. The hunger feeling can be from gas some of the others have mentioned gas feels like hunger so I got gasX and it helped squash that feeling. You really have a great weight loss already hope you have continued success.

    private pay search

Centennial Center for the Treatment of Obesity in Nashville, TN offers Lap-Band surgery for $14,400, which is pretty decent for U.S. surgeons. There are three surgeons that work there.

    time off

Marcy I have read that a lot of people go back to work after 3 days depending on the type of work they do - no heavy lifting for about 4 - 6 weeks - you are on your feet all day and moving so that will be good for the gas pains (gas trapped in abdominal cavity following surgery). I arranged my surgery to coincide with 2 weeks vacation and it is the best thing I could have done. I have felt no pressure to keep at it and could rest when I needed to - the one thing that I am not doing very well is walking. My knee is acting up and that is creating some challenges, but I am doing more around the house at a leisurely rate. Worthwhile looking at if you can afford the time off. Cindy

    after the fill

Hi Tellie - Your theory may not be that far off. My third fill was similar to your experience - a few days before my third fill I starting to have some pains in my back where I imagined the band to be, a pinching like feeling. I couldn't really imagine how much worse it would be going even tighter, but decided not to cancel the fill. I can't tell you the relief I felt as soon as all the saline was drained out - it was like suddenly being able to breathe again, not realizing I hadn't been breathing before. Third fill was given, and I felt much more comfortable than at the end of my second fill, but definitely tighter. My fills don't usually kick in for about 4 weeks. I have only heard a few others comment that they seem to be on that same delayed schedule. As far as why they take time to kick in at all, perhaps the sudden release of pressure relaxes the stomach, and it takes a few days for it to react again to the renewed pressure. (I love making up my own theories - lol) As far as whether you need a tweak now, or not... You really have to use your best judgment. If you're not losing and not having any problems with this fill, you may want to get readjusted. Just promise yourself that if you end up too tight you'll take the time and expense to have some fill removed. Good luck!

    after the fill

Hi guys, thank you for the replies.... I hadn't really considered the weather as a factor, but since I'm in the middle of the australian summer, I can't blame it anyway. Donali, apparently it's pretty standard here to have .5 ml fills every month until it hits the ideal spot for the patient, thats why I'm seeing the doc in 3 weeks. I am just worried that I will only start feeling restriction then, when I am getting the next fill. And I have considered asking him to give me 1 cc rather than just .5ml. I don't know what to do! Ireally wanted to lose more weight before I tell my doc I am going overseas -he will want to unfill me and I dont want to stop this process even for 4 weeks ( ok, eventhough I am eating as much as before right now, it might still kick in) and hey, losing a few more kilos will make that plane seat that much less unconfy  BTW!! would the changes in pressure do anything to the band???? like when you travel with bottled water and the bottle gets depressurized. Jennye, this is my 3rd month too! had it done on the 1st nov. take care tellie

    Wow... I amaze myself

Tomorrow is my first day on the medically supervised diet. I am currently 291.5 pounds. I have 20 pounds to lose in the next 2 weeks. I figure that means drinking as much water as i can get in (at least a gallon per day), exercising as much as possible (at least 1 hour per day) and following the diet to a T. I will be banded on December 14. My best friend Roslyn is coming to support me. Dad is coming to drive me to the hospital. I am staying over night and the following day I go on short term disability for a week. Over the next 2 weeks, I want to get my house cleaned. I want to bring order to my mind, my spirit, my home. I want to prepare myself for the next chapter in my life. A chapter where I am the heroine, slender, strong, healthy, happy, fulfilled life and a positive role model to my son. We deserve good things. Healing myself is the way to accomplish that.

  23. Hi Budha, Yup, everyone feels the gas pains differently and they can be quite uncomfortable. Please be assured that they will pass, and soon. In the meantime, it's good advice to walk around as much as possible. Your diet sounds very typical for the first week or so. Don't worry about calories at this point--the first several weeks are about healing not losing, so if you're hungry go for another glass of milk or something. I drank a lot of chocolate milk made with Ovaltine, which I figured was marginally better for me than Nestle's Quik.

    upset

Here's something I copied from ButterTheBean (a veteran sleever): If your weight loss has stalled, read THIS. You are certainly not alone. I've been in a stall for 6 weeks. I thought I had it conquered at one point, but now I'm right back where I was, number-wise.
