    Minnesota?

Hey all! Minnesota here as well! Saint Paul (Dayton's Bluff). I am having my revision surgery on Aug 7, 2018 (also my 30th birthday!) and am so excited. I had a lap band placed in 2011 and lost 115 pounds, only to have gained it back after complications made me take saline out. I am getting a RNY at St. Josephs in Saint Paul- Dr. Geoffry Fasan So nice to see other MN peeps! I'm excited and nervous and it's been the main thing on my mind for months, but its coming!

    4+ year Vet Starting Over

I think I actually have a similar thread somewhere here in the vet's forum. I'm 4 years out and have similar struggles. I fell off program, went through HUGE life changes and had regain. I floated around regain land, eating and drinking everything I wanted- after all, my sleeve controlled the AMOUNT I eat, right??- and finally woke up when I got ugly medical results last fall. YOU GOT THIS. For me, I went hard core Keto the next day and got my crud together. But you KNOW what to do. Go back to post op. Relearn WHAT to eat. Focus on water, protein, moving every day, etc. Dig out your old papers from your clinic or doc and reread them. I do that occasionally. Don't waste time looking at various diet sites, groups, etc. As bariatric patients we know that protein, food amounts, water, movement all work for us (I did the same, I even went to a new surgeon to inquire about revision but he told me I didn't need it). Consider finding a brand new support group. Even if you have to drive a little ways, going to a new group is SO much easier because you don't have to face people who knew you when you were losing and were post op. For me, people in my new group never knew me post op, so they only met me last year and by getting my crud together, I've lost about 45 lbs (all my regain) and am back on track to FINALLY get to my actual goal. YOU GOT THIS girl, hang in there !!!!!!!

How are the May sleevers doing?

I was sleeved May 17th. Highest weight was 282, before lap band. Had a revision and surgery day weight was 244. This morning I was 206!!! Not hungry much but focusing on getting protein in with the premier protein. I have one more week of soft foods then I’m on regular....little nervous for that but looking forwards to it also.

    Pre-Op Concerns

hk1100: I had MGB surgery in April 2017, which resolved my acid reflux, BUT in Dec 2017, I started experiencing stomach pain and nausea constantly. I’ve had 2 EGDs since then that show bile reflux in my pouch. I never had this type of reflux prior to MGB surgery, and I now have Barrett’s Esophagus too, which is very concerning. My next step is to be revised to an RNY this summer. I regret having an MGB and wish I had RNY as my original bariatric surgery. UPDATE: I do not have foul-smelling BMs. That is more an issue for DS patients and people who eat a lot of carbs/processed food. My lab work shows that my vitamin levels are normal. I take 2 One A Day 50+ multivitamins, and also take separate calcium citrate and heme iron, but not together, as well as magnesium and D.
  5. Odds are this was due to the revision and not actual reflux. How are you doing now?

    Pre-Op Concerns

I had the RNY, poop smell depends on what I've eaten, some days it's normal, other's... it's down right foul. I keep a bottle of Poop-purri in my desk for work poops. I'm using PatchMD patchs, my Vitamin D is low, but it was low before surgery (the joys of living in the north) so I take extra Vitamin D supplements, but all other blood levels were within normal ranges. For me, I was revised from the Band to RNY, I didn't have the choice for the mini. But between the 2, if the mini has more complications than the RNY... I would have chosen the RNY if I had the options.
  7. I had my revision from Lap Band to Sleeve 7 weeks ago and have lost 20 pounds...woohoo!!! I lost 30 in the 3 months prior to revision...another woohoo!!! I am officially 100 pounds down from my lifetime high of 260, 11 years ago... the biggest woohoo of all!!! Let's celebrate Broads over 50 getting it under control!!!
  8. I am 5'2 and weigh about 170. I currently have the lap band which needs to come out due to many complications. I have an appointment July 18, 2018 with the surgeon to talk about the revision. I think I would like to have the sleeve but am certain due to heartburn when I was pregnant he will recommend the bypass. I am terrified really. I started this journey because I seen my mother who was obese go through so many health issues that were weight related. I just want to be healthy and the thought of either surgery scares me that I will have created issues trying to avoid issues. I almost wish I would have never started. I am 52 years old and pray whatever decision the surgeon recommends is going to the right one.

    February 2018 Success Stories

I had the SIPS surgery back on 2/14/2018 (Valentines Day)! I did self-pay to the tune of $17K because I didn't want to deal with all of the insurance hassles. It is the best $17,000 dollars I've ever spent. At nearly 5 months out, I'm down 70lbs. It just never would have happened without a boost from surgery. I exercise faithfully five days a week, I eat "mostly" right daily and I feel like a new person. I am now off of all blood pressure and cholesterol meds, breathing treatments, and no more back pain. The non-scale, health victories have more value to me than the vanity aspect of it. My quality of life has completely changed as I can do more physically for myself and with my family. Before the surgery, walking from my car to the office building was like jogging ten miles. I'm back up on heels, buying more flattering clothing, accessorizing and the whole bit. I'm enjoying what seems to me like a rebirth. I've cooked more in the last few months than I probably have in the last two years. I cook just about every day so that I have food for lunch and dinner. I've cut waaaaaaay back on fast food, restaurants, and takeout. I stay all over the internet looking for recipes that give me another way to make great veggie and protein dishes. I simply feel great. I have about 36 lbs to lose before hitting my first goal of 190. Although I'm not extremely tall at 5'6, I carry weight pretty well. I've always looked lighter than I actually am. Once I get to 190, I'll determine if I need to come down another 10-20 lbs. Sorry, this is long, but I'm just so happy with the decision to punt the LAP-BAND that I had and get this revision!

    Sleeve to RNY

Hello, I had the sleeve in Nov of 2016. I did great with that for about 8 months, then I started to get horrible acid reflux, etc, which eventually led to not being able to swallow any solid food due to pain in my throat and chest. Hospital stays, ER trips, gastro doctor trips, surgeon trips, endoscopies, barium swallow, and basically living off of pureeds for almost 5 months. Finally had my revision to bypass on May 29th. I did my revision strictly for the GERD probs, I was already at my goal weight. I also had a hiatal hernia that was repaired at the time of the revision to bypass. It's just over a month later and I'm doing good, overall. The main thing is that ALL of the acid reflux/swallowing/pain/ETC is gone! No more problems with GERD. What a huge relief. The recovery hasn't been so bad. My bruising is just now going away, but the pain lingers a little. The largest incision from the surgery was the most painful, but I was getting up out of bed by myself one day after my surgery. In fact, I was sent home 24 hours after surgery. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty painful and rough for awhile, but it was SO worth it! Don't feel like a failure, you're doing great! The revision may be just what you need to get you to the place where you want to be. Wish you the best.

    4 weeks post op.

Hey J, the numbers are little "mixed up" My initial surgery was Nov of 2011, my starting weight was 370 back then, I had the band, and it didn't do all that great. Lost 70 there, but then that was it. Revised to the bypass this past March and since then I've dropped another 62 ish. I'm not even sure I could handle 122 lbs in 4 months LOL, but thank you! I wish the callout had more options for those of us that have revised, but sadly they don't just yet.
  12. I had my revision to bypass on 6/26, and I was so proud of how well I rocked it. I was zooming those halls and drinking like a champ. My drain couldn’t come out, as it was draining too much. A home nurse came out twice and still had to leave the drain in. I started having awful pain on Sunday and finally went to ER yesterday. The drain was kept in too long and got an infection. The pain radiates up to my chest and collarbone so I am kind of miserable. I keep getting small fevers but am hopeful the antibiotics kick in soon. I want to go back to zooming around!

    How long off work/disability?

I took 2 months for my band. And 2 months for my revision. 2 different jobs, no issues from either with taking the 2 months. The extra 2 weeks of unstressed healing really make an amazing difference.
  15. I am having so much difficult with the nurses that are taking cake of me. I keep tell them I don’t fell well, I so I went over their head and called my facto he thinks it. Could be apendicitis has anyone every experience this what there you symptoms should I be freaking out PLEASE HELP!
  16. From what you're saying, the persons you are referring to are having REVISION, meaning they've already had 1 WLS. It's not uncommon to revise a WLS due to severe GERD issues. Most frequent I see is sleeve to bypass. They would likely repair the hernia at the same time. The hernia itself would probably not necessitate a revision, but combined with GERD, it's a stronger "selling point" for the insurance to cover the revision.

Welcome Francine2! Glad to hear you are doing well! My husband is having an umbilical hernia repaired 7/3. He was sleeved in 2010. No GERD or revision needed though. Phew!

    Do I make the cut?

I am a little over 5 weeks out. When I was revised from Band to Sleeve my BMI was 30 and I weighed 180. I’m now at 160 (my original goal). I’m going for 140 now. The surgery was a breeze. No surgical pain. The only reason I needed any pain meds was due to an old back injury getting jostled from surgical positioning. Other than that I was fine. Up an walking as soon as I was steady after recovery. Had a morning surgery on May 17th. Was home walking around by noon May 18th. Tanning (with a towel over belly) and running errands with hubby by 20th! I’m so happy!
  20. I am ignorant to this subject so I was curious as to why a hernia would warrant weight loss surgery; or even a revision. from what I am reading (or maybe I am reading/comprehending incorrectly). But I see a lot of people saying “I am having a revision because of GERD & a hernia.” or could it be they are having a revision & a hernia just at the same time?

There seem to be a fair amount of revisions from sleeve to RNY because of the same issues?

Welcome!   I have learned so much from the people on BP. So did you get a revision?

    Process For Revision

It’s going to depend on your insurance and WLC requirements. I am in class with a person who had a bypass 6 yrs ago and is doing a revision. Our WLC makes everyone go through 6 months of classes and a ton of test. The only one not required is a sleep study person already on a CPAP.
