When does weight loss start?
NovaLuna replied to Angelina1210's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Some people hold onto the IV fluid from their surgery for slightly longer. You may just be one of those people. I'd say give it another four or five days before stressing about it. Your weight loss should pick back up then. -
I just had the gastric sleeve done on December 10th and I lost 1.8 lbs. Is this normal? I don’t want to compare myself to others but I’m concerned. Is there anything I should be doing? I can only consume liquids and I struggle with that. When does the weight loss start? 😏

Joining Weight Watchers after Gastric Sleeve surgery.
learn2cook replied to calicakes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It looks like you’re doing great! It is part of my plan for continued weight loss to join WW when I get closer to goal and need more encouragement and accountability. I also plan on following my dietitian’s macros instead of WW if they don’t match up. Bravo to you for finding a sensible solution that works for you! -
I lost 23 pounds the first month and I was heavier then you. 20 pounds is a fantastic amount of weight and is on the higher side especially with your starting weight. Unrealistic expectations for the surgery are common because of the show 'My 600 Pound Life' but your starting weight was less than half of theirs and thus your weight loss isn't going to seem as significant, but you're on track and doing great. I had the same unrealistic expectations and you'll have to work on lowering your expectations to be more realistic with your weight loss or else you're constantly going to be beating yourself up thinking that you're failing when, in fact, you're not only on track, but ahead of most people at the same point in time. Put this into perspective: You lost almost 8% of your body weight... in less than a month! How is that failing? Be proud of yourself! You've done great thus far!

The more you have to lose the faster you lose to begin. 20lbs is great. If anyone tells you differently punch them in the nose (not really of course). As @catwoman7 said the people on My 600lb Life have a lot more weight to lose than you - like more than double. So you should expect their initial weight loss rate to be more than double yours. But if you watch that show you’ll notice that as they lose weight, the loss Dr Now expects them to lose each month decreases. Glad you’ve done well & haven’t had any issues. And enjoy every pound you lose.

Only 9 pounds almost 4 weeks post op
Misnomer replied to GiGi 1970's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m having the same worry! Monday will be 4 weeks for me (RNY on 11/22), and right now I’ve only lost 11 pounds since surgery. I have no problem getting enough protein — 60-90g, right from the start — but I do struggle to drink more than 40-50oz of water each day, and I’m definitely not walking as much as I should. I know my weight loss will be less dramatic than someone who had a higher starting BMI, but I wonder if I’m on track. I just transitioned from liquids to soft foods at the start of the week, and I find myself worrying (a tiny bit) about the “extra” calories…crazy, right?! -
most people lose 15-25 lbs the first month. Of course you'll always find a few who lose more or less than that, but they're outliers. So you're perfectly normal. if you're basing your loss on that show "My 600 lb Life", then you need to adjust your expectations. Those people start out MUCH heavier than your average WLS patient, so OF COURSE they're going to lose a lot faster. Your loss is completely normal. In fact, it's even a little on the high side. P.S. I lost 16 lbs the first month (so probably around 12 lbs or so in the first three weeks - but I have only my monthly weigh-ins recorded from that far back), and I started out MUCH heavier than you. You are fine. Quit worrying. If you're following your program and your overall trend is down, you're golden!

Family Doctor Referral Advice
JDLane replied to SueAll's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd start with your insurance and see if you even need a referral. Do you typically need a referral to see a specialist? Find out your insurance requirements for surgery. It shouldn't be your primary that has requirements for you, it's typically insurance and the surgeon themselves that will have criteria you may need to meet. You may be able to just investigate local practices on your own and schedule something. But I would also just say I'm interested in getting more information on weight loss surgery, can you help me with that? And then go from there. If you do need a referral and they say no, ask them to document their refusal in your chart and then seek another doctor. -
Thank you for that information. It all make sense. I have never been pregnant so I didn’t know hair loss was an issue in pregnancy. I tell myself the same thing about weight loss over hair loss, but realistically super attached to my hair. Lol!!!! I almost opted out of the surgery because of the possible hair loss. Yep. It was that serious. Lol!!!! My dietician told me what yo do minimize it and talked me back into the surgery. If it happens, it happens. I’ll adjust and it will grow back. Just trying to stay positive and do what I can on my end. Thanks, Love💛💛💛💛

Locs/Dreads/Dreadlocks
Flab-U-Less Forever replied to BirdLady21's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think the reason for hair loss is similar hair loss after pregnancy. After giving birth, your estrogen levels drop significantly and more hair goes into the resting stage (the hair stage prior to shedding). Since lots of hair goes into this stage, lots of hair is shed at the same time. Normally (aka non-pregnant), I think only about 10% of your hair is in the rest/shed stage. Our bodies store estrogen in the fat cells so when you lose weight fast due to WLS, your body is flooded with estrogen. As your weight loss slows, the amount of estrogen in your body drops similar to post pregnancy. I hope you don't have a problem with hair loss and I hope I don't either! I'm just trying to make myself believe that it is only hair and it will grow back. I'll take the long term weight loss with some short term funky hair than long term obesity and long term good (ish) hair 🙂 -
Family Doctor Referral Advice
catwoman7 replied to SueAll's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think in this day and age most doctors are comfortable with weight loss surgery. Some aren't - but most are willing to do the referral. In fact, mine was the one who brought it up first because she was familiar with my history. Once your BMI is over 40, it's very difficult to lose weight through diet and exercise alone - most doctors should know that. I wouldn't worry until you see the person. If they aren't on board with it, can you switch doctors? -
So my family's regular primary doctor retired and I am seeing this new doctor tomorrow for the first time for a new patient visit. I am wondering how I can talk about my interest in a referral for weight loss surgery and if it will be potentially difficult or will I need hit all these certain points or a criteria (besides my high bmi). I want to be geniuine and just talk about my issues and how I feel but I am afraid of being belittled or just told to be in a calorie deficit and exercise. My biggest fear is them saying no.

I have locs (22 yrs now) and I did A LOT of low manipulation and semi free forming when I originally had surgery in the end of 2017. I was so worried about hair loss I did a ton of research in med journals on treatments for Telogen Effluvium (the type of hair loss most WLS patients experience) you can find a compilation of the journals I found most promising here: I had mild thinning along my temples and didn’t lose any locs. Pics included❤️

Congratulations. On the weight loss and your anniversary. Enjoy the cruise.

Thank you so much for this. I have been interlocking from the beginning. I have really small locs. Over 300. Plus I used to hike and garden so I had to wash my hair a lot and twisting was pointless. Lol!!!! I now interlock every 4-6 months. I had my hair interlocked a week before surgery so would not have to do any major manipulating and pulling for several months after surgery. I have heard a lot if VSG patients say they didn’t lose any hair because they don’t deal with the malabsorption like we RYN patients do. I don’t know if that is the reason or not. I try not to touch it at all unless I’m moisturizing my scalp or washing it. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING. 💛💛💛💛

Locs/Dreads/Dreadlocks
ReadingMochaMom4 replied to BirdLady21's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Good afternoon, My SIL had a VSG, she didn't lose any hair at all. Her locs were baby locs less than 2 years old. My locs were about 3 inches past my bra strap. My locs started to thin a little at the root, so I changed from twisting them to interlocking. That made a little bit of a difference, I chose to cut my locs, now they are shoulder length. My thinning was hereditary and not caused my weight loss. That said, I keep up with my water and my protein to keep the hair loss to a minimum. Final answer, no you probably won't have to cut your locs unless you want to. -
people are kind of across the board when it comes to hair loss. Some don't lose any at all - some lose a lot - but most of us are somewhere in the middle. It's not really common for it to fall out in noticeable clumps - most people just kind of "shed" for a few months. I didn't lose very much hair. I know I was losing it because I saw a more strands than normal in my combs, but just looking at my hair in the mirror, I couldn't tell. So I'm sure no one else could. about all you can is keep on top of your supplements and protein so it won't get any worse than it will anyway, which you're already doing. And keep your fingers crossed! I don't know if not manipulating it would make a difference, but someone else might have experience with that.

Yep, me too. Not a breakfast eater and never was…even pre-op. My first meal of the day is generally after noon. But I do have my coffee (black) soon after I wake up in the morning. Oh, but in the early months after surgery, I used to eat a tablespoon of yogurt to help my calcium pills go down easier…if i didn't, i’d get all sorts of stomach cramping cuz my stomach was empty. Am 3 years out now and the no-breakfast eating seems to have had/have no effect to my weight loss nor maintenance. Good luck! ❤️

Is there anyone who has had gastric bypass and has dreadlocks???? I am doing a lot of my end to try and combat hair loss as best as I can. Making sure I’m getting my protein in, other supplements, and collagen, etc. I know hair loss is a part of the surgery but I’m doing what I can to minimize it when I get to that point. I am only 3 weeks ends right now. My dreadlocks fall between the middle of my back and my “bottom.” I was wondering since our hair doesn’t require a lot of manipulation if the hair loss is the same of us. I just wash my hair and keep it up in a bun yo lessen the manipulation. I saw one YouTube say she didn’t lose her locs but she lost her edges. I know everyone’s experience is different, but wondering if I would have to cut off my locs. Thank you in advance for your responses. 💛💛💛💛

Anyone had a brain fog & memory loss Sent from my U307AS using BariatricPal mobile app

I did but my weight loss is still very very slow. And my weight is constantly going up and down it’s never consistently just f**king going down. I was 260 on Saturday. Yesterday I was magically 262! Today I’m 261. I’m almost 7 weeks out. And so far lost only 22 pounds. I was stuck for like 3 of those weeks bouncing around from 266-268. I hate this so much. I know it’s not a magical fix I didn’t expect that. But damn it says I should be losing 3-4 pounds a week and that is not the case. If I could go back I’d never have this surgery. I would have just stayed fat.

Any last minute psychology appt advice?
learn2cook replied to lussa's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Real meaningful weight loss is a head game. It tests our resilience and adaptability. Most of us don’t know we have so many emotional areas to work upon in order to reach our goals. I’m with ShoppGirl, and I too didn’t realize how much I was emotionally eating. There’s nothing to finesse. Just be you and ask good questions because you are curious about finding real long term health. Also, three hours a week is only 1/2 hour a day. That’s a stroll around a parking lot or a park, marching in your house, dancing, or a bike ride. It could even be broken into 3 ten minute strolls per day. Just getting up from the couch to move during TV commercials would qualify. -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
Valboosky replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, I’m in a surprising amount of pills. I’m on two different high blood pressure meds despite my latest readings being 120/80. I’m on Eliquis which is a blood thinner/anti clot. Also meds to prevent gall bladder stones which can happen with rapid weight loss. Also vitamin D pills. I’m trusting my surgeon. He’s the head of minimally invasive surgery at Columbia in NY and I’m told he’s one of the best in the country. -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
Barb929 replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's an amazing amount of loss! I fasted 24 hrs prior to surgery. I'm only taking my normal meds and vit c. I have been taking meds whole since surgery. I did have to change from Premier Protein to Fairlife Protein which made all the difference! It's so strange how every doctor has different pre/post op instructions.
