  1. Note... you say you are eating pretty much nothing but protein... realize that the dairy products, even if unsweetened, contain naturally occurring carbs in the form of lactose which is milk sugar. And the refried beans have carbs as well, though it's fiber. Even eggs contain carbs and fat. Not saying they aren't good things to eat, just making sure you and others who read this are aware. 1/2 C 2% cottage cheese- 14g protein, 4g milk sugar, 2.5 fat 1/2 c fat free cottage cheese -15g protein 5g carbs (my plan would prefer the fat to carbs) Greek yogurt--all six oz servings 2% plain - 20g protein, 4g fat, 8g carbs Fat free pain - 23 protein, 0 fat, 9g carbs Oikos triple zero 15g protein 14g carbs (almost equal!) Dannon light and fit 12g protein, 9g carbs (The sugar added are even more sugar of course) 1/2 Fat free refried beans- rosarita- 6g protein, 18 carb Bush's 9 protein, 24 carb Kroger 7 protein, 20 carb Egg 6g protein, 4g fat, 1g carb Why would you trust your surgical team to literally cut you open and then not follow their dietary advice? At least for a couple of months? Better yet, why not six months or a year? Alcohol, cigars, coffee will all be there in a few months. So will the gym. How do you know you can tolerate it? Usually when we feel guilty it's because we know we are doing something wrong, even though we may say we aren't. When we are truly not doing something wrong we don't feel guilty. But you asked a question. I followed my doctors rules to the letter for a year till I was at goal. I chose the surgeon I trusted so I trusted them to know way more than I did about weight loss surgery and how to make the best recovery and lose weight most efficiently and permanently. I still follow it most of the time and I'm four years out.

I couldn't say whether its normal since I didn't break my diet during the healing period. The thickest thing I ate for the first 3 weeks was yogurt. Pizza? Salami? These are not just dangerous to an operated-on stomach, but should largely be off diet for the duration of your weight loss period. And if you hope to keep the weight off, those types of foods have to be limited long-term. This is a hard time. You are trying to recover from major surgery and learn a new lifestyle, all at the same time. 20% of patients regain a significant amount of the weight they lost in the first year postop. For good long term results, you have to work on what goes on your plate, not just how much.
  3. I am barely 3 weeks out and am struggling with protein. I am going to try protein powder in my yogurt. This is a great thread and gives me hope! Lol Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
  4. I had RnY Surgery on Sept 6th and so far am down 42 lbs. I followed the doctors instructions to the letter for the first 2 weeks but have been deviating a little here and there. I am still eating pretty much nothing but protein. My diet consists mainly of eggs, cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt, re-fried beans, lunch meat, chicken breast meat and the occasional can of cream soup. everything I eat is the Low fat or No fat variety. Here is where I have deviated, Today I had 2 cups of coffee (I am not suppose to have caffeine until week 8), I went back to puffing on the occasional cigar about 2 weeks ago, in the last week I have started having either wine or a little whiskey with my cigar. I was told not to go to the gym until week 6 but found myself there for the first time today (4 weeks after surgery). I feel great and healthy and strong, I have plenty of energy. I had surgery on a Wednesday and would have gone back to work on Friday if I hadn't already turned in my time card for the week. I did go back to work the Monday after surgery and never had any problems, not even any discomfort. I think everybody is different and we can all tolerate things differently. I don't think I am doing anything wrong when it comes to my recovery or weight loss but I do feel a little guilty for not following all the instructions I was given.

I agree. Seems you need to clean up your diet and make better choices. Sooth your sick throat with ice or yogurt next time.
  6. I wouldn't try tuna with yogurt. Sounds absolutely ghastly! It's been my experience with the NUTS that I've worked with in the hospital, that discussing fats is difficult. They don't tend to be big on any fat, bad or good.

    Not full

My plan allowed purees starting on day 3. What does your plan look like for you? I noticed on day 4, I ate 1 bite of yogurt. Now, at 8 weeks I can eat 4oz of puree, but don't feel full unless I'm eating dense protein like meat. To me, full feels gross. Even if you can eat more, stick to the amount prescribed and you will be fine. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. Yeah on the protein shake, that's what I found on my 2 hypothetical days too. I had to add in 10-25g of protein powder to hit it at the 1/4cup per meal stage. How much volume do you think you're eating total per meal? Is it about a 1/2 cup to a cup you think? Or does it depend on what the food is: ie 2-3oz dense protein v. 1/2c yogurt? TYTYTYTY for playing! It truly helps!
  9. Ok, here's another hypothetical day of eating to get my protein in without using any, or using as little protein powder, bars, drinks as possible at 6 weeks with my plan. Goal: 1/4c Food per meal/snack; 74g Protein/day B: 1 lg egg + 1/8c 2% Daisy cottage cheese + 1oz Tillamook shredded cheddar (16g P) MS: 1/8c %F greek yogurt + 1/8c 2% Daisy cottage cheese + 1oz froz blueberries + 6g slivered almonds (7g P) L: 2oz canned Sam's chicken + 1/2tbsp Vlassic dill relish + 2tbps WF amazin chipotle mayo (10g P) AS: 1/4c refried beans + 1oz Tillamook shredded cheddar + 1tbsp salsa + 1tsp sour cream (10g P) D: 3oz basa filet + 1 lemon wedge (12g P) BS: 1/4c 2% Daisy cottage cheese + 12g Vitacost peanut butter powder + 10g protein powder (21g P) Daily Totals: 717cals; 76g Protein; 33g Fat; 26g Carb; 7g Fiber; 19g Net Carbs; 8g naturally occurring sugars
  10. Hi y'all. I thought it would be fun to post a real or theoretical day of eating that allows you to get your protein in at the individual level you're at presently. So like, if you're eating 1/4c per meal and have a protein requirement of 60g of protein for the day--what are you eating. Likewise, if you have a 1/2c per meal allowance and an 80g of protein requirement--what do you eat. Maybe if we do enough of these posts they will be great references for people as they work their way up from the initial 1oz=1/8c per meal, all the way up to 1c=8oz per meal! I know it will sure help me. I'll start by giving a hypothetical example for me when I'm 6 weeks out--on a "good day". You can put everything you're eating, but really I'm just thinking to put the protein component only and if you have room to also eat some veggie and then higher glycemic carb, God bless you! (Oh the big goal is to get as much of your food from whole food sources rather than protein powders/bars/shakes etc.) Ok, let's play! Goal: 1/4c Food per meal/snack; 74g Protein/day B: 1 jumbo egg + 1 tsp unsalted KG butter (8g P) MS: 1/4c HEB 0%Fat Greek Yogurt + 1oz froz blueberries + 6g slivered almonds + 10g protein powder (15g P) L: 2oz stewed chicken thighs + 1tbsp salsa (14g P) AS: 1/8c homemade sf fluffernutter (peanut butter/marshmallow dip) + 5g protein powder + 1oz GS apple (10g P) D: 1/8c homemade 2Alarm chili + 1 tbsp pintos + 1 tbsp grated cheddar + 1 tbsp salsa + 1 tsp sour cream (17g P) BS: 1/4c 2% Daisy cottage cheese + 6g Vitacost peanut butter powder (10g P) Daily Totals: 670cals; 74g Protein; 30g Fat; 29g Carb; 11g Fiber; 18g Net Carbs; 10g naturally occurring sugars
  11. One week post op I can have yogurt and soft cheeses now! I wish I had better control of my emotions. I had been stable on my meds for bipolar and anxiety until now... Now it feels like I'm off my meds completely, which I'm not. I know I need to be patient and let myself feel what I need to but I don't wanna hmmpf *crosses arms and pouts* I just want my moods to stabilize again.

Sorry :/ My surgery is schedule for 11/10. I am kinda worried about how I will be after, emotionally. I take meds for depression and anxiety.

Me to @FL*Girl. My surgery is on Oct 30. I hope the depression doesn't worsen after the surgery. I'm barely hanging in there as it is.

@FL*Girl and @ColdWater99 I've seen from a lot of people that emotions go kinda haywire after surgery :/ My psychiatrist said that fat cells hold hormones so when the fat cells die they release the hormones. I've noticed for me its kind of like really intense PMS mood swings. But I'm optimistic that things will work themselves out! Congratulations on your surgeries and I wish you both quick and easy recoveries <3<3

I feel like I can eat too much

Soup is a liquid. Yogurt is a liquid (pudding thick consistency). Liquid-consistency foods don't promote fullness or satiety in many sleevers simply because they don't remain in our sleeved stomachs for longer than a few minutes. Liquids exit our sleeves rapidly via the pyloric valve and into the small intestine. You could probably eat a gallon of potato corn chowder soup (3070 calories) over the course of a few hours and still be somewhat hungry. I assure you'll feel stuffed with 4 ounces of chicken breast, pork chops, turkey, or steak. Rigid protein and fibrous veggies trigger satiety. Everything else is a 'slider,' a.k.a. food that slides into our stomachs without triggering satiety.
  13. My two week pre op diet is not liquid. My Doc changed it to a low fat low calorie one. Lean chicken. Veggies. Fruit. Low fat or no fat yogurt and cottage cheese. It's much easier to deal with.
  14. 11 days post op and I’m worried this tool isn’t going to work for me. I can literally eat as much as I want of full liquids and some puréed and soups. Today after two bowls and a cup of soup and two yogurts I finally started to feel over stuffed. I don’t understand why this is happening other people I know can only eat a couple ounces at a time! I can drink a ton of liquid too. I’m so worried that this isn’t going to help me enough. I was banking on not being able to eat.
  15. I’m 11 days post op and today I ate 1280 calories in soup and yogurt. I don’t get it. I don’t have problems eating too much or getting sick. I feel overly full sometimes like today but never enough to vomit or dump. I can drink water normally and never have had a problem with that... other people I know can only eat 2-4 ounces at a time... I hope this changes when I go to puréed and soft foods... otherwise idk why I did this surgery!!! I thought I’d be much more restricted than I am.

    Need a surgery buddy..Sept 26tg

Upon discharge, my surgeon put me on a full liquid diet. I think it's similar to the pureed. I am allowed to have soups that I've put through the blender, pudding, yogurt, tomato soup, protein drinks, milk, etc. After I go back to see the surgeon next Tuesday, I believe they will upgrade me to the Soft/mushy stage which includes soft/cooked veggies, canned fruit and bananas, tuna and chicken salad, eggs, beans, cottage cheese, etc. I'm most looking forward to the cottage cheese, it's one of my favorite foods! I've had a little nausea, but not too bad. I don't really feel hungry at all yet, I have to make myself eat. I'm hitting my 64 oz goal but it's not easy. I have to remember to sip constantly! And I used to drink a ton of water, but like you said, there's just a tiny little stomach left now!
  17. I don't tend to add mayo to my foods, because I really don't need to. I actually like tuna with a little lemon pepper and that is it...No salt either. I can eat it right out of the pouch. I don't like yogurt either, so I don't eat that at all. I love cottage cheese though. I prefer the 2% milkfat version though, but only because it is more palatable to me. I only eat it every long once in a while, so it probably doesn't even make a difference either way. I don't eat low carb at all. I eat whatever I want, but within reason. I am pretty disciplined, and don't crave garbage. I can eat so little that I would rather fill my stomach with real food. Not processed food, but not super fatty food either. I love vegetables and ancient grains (quinoa, millet, buckwheat, etc.). I also love salmon and tuna. Chicken and turkey are okay, but I don't really care for pork or red meat. I also eat egg whites a couple of times per week. I do get my fats from fish, an occasional chicken or turkey breast, avocados, some cheese (cottage, pepperjack or cheddar), nuts, flax, hemp and chia seeds, and an occasional dose of olive and/or coconut oil. There is tons of conflicting information out there, and the food and beverage industry loves that. At my kid's school, pepperoni pizza is considered okay as it is a grain, a vegetable, a milk product and a meat. They do offer salads and fresh fruit as well, which is a plus, but most don't get those. I tell my daughter that balance is important. If you eat the pizza, have a salad first. Then if you still want the pizza, have it. Either eat the fresh fruit, or wrap it up, and take it for snack later. She can use the added carbs as she is an athlete.

    Ugh!

Our plan is generous, but we are only allowed stuff like apple sauce or soft canned fruits, added to yogurt starting week 3. Other than that, it's once we reach 75% of our weight loss (or 1 year) then after eating our protein, we can have veggies. If still hungry in the 30 minute window, we can add a serving of fruit. All plans are different! Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

This liquid diet is killing me

I've been experimenting pre-surgery so that I have an easy-ish road map to follow after surgery. Have you tried adding unflavored protein powder to regular soups? I make homemade chicken broth from trimmed scraps and bones that I would otherwise throw away. It makes about 3-4 cups at a time and is fairly quick to make. So I take a cup of broth and nuke it for a few seconds until it's about 135*. Then add in my Isopure Unflavored protein powder and if I need to, will add just a touch of Better Than Bouillon to boost the flavor. You can also stir in a spoon or two of cream of anything to the soup. It's really delish. I also do that with V-8 and warm it up for a tomato soup, or just add the protein to tomato soup or bisque. You can stir in a spoon of yogurt and spices/herbs to make it creamy tomato. I also do it for cream soups from a can.

    Newbie 6 weeks from surgery

What I did was made a list of all the protein-containing foods. Then I worked with this list to tell me what to eat. From softest to toughest: Milk Cottage cheese/yogurt Eggs Beans Soft fish Tuna salad / tofu Rotisserie chicken thigh Nuts All other meats Until about 10 weeks postop I didn't have room for anything else. I gradually brought in veggies, fruits, and potatoes as I had room (while keeping my protein up around 70g). It takes a long time. 6 months before having room for a serving of potatoes. I was so excited 2 days ago. I got these wonderful, homegrown, red sweet peppers, and I could just eat a whole one like an apple. I have so missed fresh, crunchy veggies... So y'alls time will come. I am steering clear of grains until goal.
  21. Hi Guys.. having problems eating at the moment, had band adjustment of 1ml... 29/9/17.. so now at 4.8ml... since having it done I am having problems whilst eating. I get a pain where my band is and everything feels stuck. I have a backed up feeling from my band up my throat.. I thought maybe I just need to keep on the fluids longer then start on soft food.. but as of yet i am still keeping on fluids as it hurts too much to eat. I dont want to get anything taken out but at the same time do i need to? Unsure of what to do. I feel like the food could come up at any time when im trying to eat. Fluids are ok ish.. yogurts/light custard are sticking too and causing a pain. Sick of cuppa soups/soups... any advice PLEASE.

    3 wks post op

UPDATE: So I'm 3 weeks post op I'm on my second stage which is textured and soft foods. I basically have been eating normal but healthy of coarse. So salads, Greek yogurt, grilled chicken and sometimes nuts. I've even tried the kind protein bars. I'm doing great the trick is to eat slow and I'm doing ok with that. I'm still doing 1 protein shake a day and that's ok too I'm learning to add bananas and peanut butter protein to make them taste different I've even tried mango from the Bariatric pal website. So far I've lost 22 lbs total I started at 306 and I'm now 284 as of tonight. I feel like I need to start incorporating some cardio and weights into my routine. I can feel my skin getting softer and more grab-able. It's scaring me. I'm excited to see what the next couple of weeks has to offer [emoji847]

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

Hey! I just tried a new yogurt that was full of chia seeds! Lol. The gift that keeps on giving (finding a few seeds stuck in my teeth...).
  24. Hi everybody. I started my pre op liquid diet and I’m 4 days in. It’s not easy. I feel lightheaded and have no energy. I try to keep busy as much as possible. I drink protein shakes, jello sf, O% fat Greek yogurt and homemade soups. I can eat puréed soups as well right? Like broccoli soup or pumpkin soup. Why are all pre op diets so different? Some can eat lean meats or fish. Would it be really bad if I just ate some cooked tuna or chicken? Btw my surgery date is Oct 12
  25. Update: Down 24 lbs since surgery - 37 lbs since my high 2 months ago. Pretty much sustaining myself on greek yogurt, scrambled eggs and protein bars. Protein water (lemon) instead of protein shakes (because I hate them all), and would love to say I'm getting all of my water in. I'm not. But doing my best. Trying to eat as much protein as possible at each meal. Looking forward for the 19th when I will be on "normal" food. Any other updates from everyone? Where are you? How are you doing? What are you eating? Are you still tired? I feel like I'm starting to come out of the tired phase. Even did a 2.5 mile hike on Sunday. Progress.
