Traveling after surgery?
Diana_in_Philly replied to emgem's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was away for almost a week about five weeks after surgery when we had to do my mother's big Italian funeral near NYC - just planned my meals and got a hotel room with a fridge so I could stock yogurt, protein shakes and other high protein stuff - I pushed food around on my plate alot when I was with the family and no one noticed. Good luck. (No one in my family other than my husband and two daughters knew about the surgery. They still don't 105 pounds later.) -
Im feeling like a failure...already
Amburmist replied to Amburmist's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Typically, ill have a protein shake for breakfast, then 4oz of a protein at lunch, and then 4oz of protein at dinner, and sometimes a yogurt or another protein shake for a snack at some point in the day. I'm not allowed to eat beef, pork, grains (rice, bread, pasta, potatoes, etc), or raw veggies yet, so i feel pretty limited on what i can have and what i will have. I have probably 8-10 food items in rotation (tuna, canned veg, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, protein shake, string cheese...to name a few). I really dont know what else to eat. My calorie intake has been about 700-800/day (im pulling back to 600 max, per my NUT) and protein intake about 80-120g/day (im pulling back to 80 max, per my NUT). My exercise is every other day at this point, 30 min of fast cardio. In ur opinion, what could i be eating or doing better? What should i stop eating or doing? Any advice u have based on what has worked for u or ur friend would be awesome! -
At two weeks I was eating refried beans with a little Greek plain yogurt, and a tiny bit of melted cheese. It was delish.

Stopped losing weight at 2 weeks
Clementine Sky replied to Kristinisgettingskinny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many people, if not the majority of us, who've had WLS experience a stall around the two to three week mark post-op. You can find dozens of threads on here discussing this if you do a keyword search of "three week stall". I was actually advised to not weigh myself at all the first month to avoid being discouraged or alarmed, but of course popped on there anyway because my curiosity was too strong. Your body is needing a bit of time to adapt. It's gone through an intense surgery, during which time you probably gained a few pounds from all that was pumped into you, and then rapidly lost a lot of weight. It's kind of like your body needs to catch its breath. There's a blogger called The World According to Eggface who has a lot of recipes for smoothies you can make during the first month out. I never would have imagined it to be possible, but I ended up having fun during that first month out trying out her ideas and others I found on Pinterest and from posters on here. I'd suggest trying out different types of protein powders so that you have some variation. I really liked the protein powders by Unjury and Syntrax Nectar. At the time I had the surgery in 2015 you could buy sample sizes of Syntrax at The Vitamin Shoppe, but in recent visits to the stores near me I found out they only have them in the large tubs now. You can still get the smaller sizes on Amazon, I believe. I'd add in nut butters (I liked making them fresh at Whole Foods), low carb fruit, Torani sugar free syrups, and even frozen sweet potato cubes from Trader Joe's (blending them with vanilla protein powder tastes like sweet potato pie to me). If you look on Amazon you'll find a lot of protein powder options, and can read through reviews. Some plain Greek yogurt brands, like Fage, have a lot of protein and are low in carbs. It's important to check the label before buying, and to avoid the flavored ones that are almost always higher in carbs. I think Fage has around 22 grams of protein, and under 10 grams of carbs. You can use it as a base to make all sorts of smoothies. -
Is 210 lbs too small for gastric sleeve? Running out of patience and time.

Well, my dad and my husband both regained some of the weight back (Dad gained about 60 lbs over the past few years, and husband gained back 15 lbs over the last year) because unlike me, they didn't feel the need to watch what they ate cuz they had the stomachs of hamsters for so long. And yet somehow that still manages to piss me off: "These mothafuckas get to eat whatever they want, and they still look like Sally Struthers should be raising money for them. And I am eating yogurt for lunch and LOOKING LIKE SALLY STRUTHERS!" :-P -
The Good The Bad & The Nasty

So two things I like, Cookie cravings = Lenny & Larry's protein cookies. Pro: The cookie is delicious my favorite flavors lemon poppy seed and oatmeal, then peanut butter and then chocolate chip. Con: the cookie is HUGE so cut your protein count in quarters or half. if you have a craving this is a good go to but a cookie is a cookie. GNC Lean bar Strawberry Yogurt is really good. The blueberry and chocolate chip are horrible -
September 2017 Gastric Sleeve Surgery!

I'm feeling better lately, thanks. I'm down 35 pounds total and am in sort of a stall, but I'm hoping that's ending soon. What are you guys eating during the pureed stage? I go to the next stage on Tuesday, but I'm getting a little bored with cottage cheese, yogurt and cream soups. My nut says no meats in the pureed stage. Anyone having any luck with pureed veggies though? I did try some mashed cauliflower that was great. -
Hi all, I need some snack suggestions. I am a "hand to mouth" person, and need some suggestions on what I can snack on at night. Something like nuts, pretzels, etc (not veggies, yogurt, jello, popsicles). Thanks for your help!

Have you tried halo top ice cream? If not, try pistachio and chocolate flavors. I also make my own high protein popsicles using low fat vanilla ice cream, berries and da vince splenda simple syrup Cook 2-3 cups the berries in the da Vince syrup to get the best flavors of the fruit. When assembling the popsicles alternate layers of yogurt and fruit. At the end use a kabob stick to swirl. Each popsicle will have If you prefer icy popsicle dont use the yogurt and each popsicle will have only 10-15 calories.

90 Days Out - Menu Ideas?
Kat410 replied to GinaLola's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a pretty standard schedule during the work week and it’s more variable during the weekend. I start the day with a low carb protein shake. About 2 hours later I have a fruit or dairy serving. Siggis yogurt or some berries. Or I may have a veggie juice. For lunch and an afternoon snack I will split a turkey burger in half and have for both meals or have chicken or turkey salad When I get home which is usually pretty late I have peanut butter and sugar free strawberry preserves on a small chestnut flatbread I also use my slow cooker and make a lot of stews that have meat and beans. -
My doctor doesn't want me snacking - just 3 meals a day. I am 10 days post op and currently on full liquids. To get all my protein in every day, I have to add protein powder to Oikos Triple Zero yogurt and SF pudding (allowed in this stage in my program) + a significantly watered down Premier Protein Clear drink (which I can barely tolerate). I have tried unflavored protein powder in soups, but I can't eat enough soup (less than 1/3 of a cup for 7 grams of protein) to get to what I need in protein for a meal. I gag on every protein shake I have tried. I have tried...I am just not a shake girl! Later this week, I am moving to the pureed stage. I am planner + I can't wait to get "eat" something different so I have started to think through this... Is it possible to get my required protein in without continuing to eat yogurt/pudding + protein powder and Premier Clear? I am anticipating I would get fuller, faster and couldn't eat enough to get the amount of protein I need per meal to get 60 grams of protein. In other words...I am trying to get out of having protein powder during the pureed stage and meet my protein goals in the pureed stage but I am not seeing a way out of it. One other complication in the pureed stage is that I hate eggs. Am I over thinking this? I know everyone is different, but I am also curious as to how much (ounces, bites, tablespoons, etc), you could eat for a meal in the pureed stage. I would be grateful for any info or guidance y'all could give...

How close do you follow your dr's Post Surgery plan?

Note... you say you are eating pretty much nothing but protein... realize that the dairy products, even if unsweetened, contain naturally occurring carbs in the form of lactose which is milk sugar. And the refried beans have carbs as well, though it's fiber. Even eggs contain carbs and fat. Not saying they aren't good things to eat, just making sure you and others who read this are aware. 1/2 C 2% cottage cheese- 14g protein, 4g milk sugar, 2.5 fat 1/2 c fat free cottage cheese -15g protein 5g carbs (my plan would prefer the fat to carbs) Greek yogurt--all six oz servings 2% plain - 20g protein, 4g fat, 8g carbs Fat free pain - 23 protein, 0 fat, 9g carbs Oikos triple zero 15g protein 14g carbs (almost equal!) Dannon light and fit 12g protein, 9g carbs (The sugar added are even more sugar of course) 1/2 Fat free refried beans- rosarita- 6g protein, 18 carb Bush's 9 protein, 24 carb Kroger 7 protein, 20 carb Egg 6g protein, 4g fat, 1g carb Why would you trust your surgical team to literally cut you open and then not follow their dietary advice? At least for a couple of months? Better yet, why not six months or a year? Alcohol, cigars, coffee will all be there in a few months. So will the gym. How do you know you can tolerate it? Usually when we feel guilty it's because we know we are doing something wrong, even though we may say we aren't. When we are truly not doing something wrong we don't feel guilty. But you asked a question. I followed my doctors rules to the letter for a year till I was at goal. I chose the surgeon I trusted so I trusted them to know way more than I did about weight loss surgery and how to make the best recovery and lose weight most efficiently and permanently. I still follow it most of the time and I'm four years out. -
I couldn't say whether its normal since I didn't break my diet during the healing period. The thickest thing I ate for the first 3 weeks was yogurt. Pizza? Salami? These are not just dangerous to an operated-on stomach, but should largely be off diet for the duration of your weight loss period. And if you hope to keep the weight off, those types of foods have to be limited long-term. This is a hard time. You are trying to recover from major surgery and learn a new lifestyle, all at the same time. 20% of patients regain a significant amount of the weight they lost in the first year postop. For good long term results, you have to work on what goes on your plate, not just how much.

I had RnY Surgery on Sept 6th and so far am down 42 lbs. I followed the doctors instructions to the letter for the first 2 weeks but have been deviating a little here and there. I am still eating pretty much nothing but protein. My diet consists mainly of eggs, cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt, re-fried beans, lunch meat, chicken breast meat and the occasional can of cream soup. everything I eat is the Low fat or No fat variety. Here is where I have deviated, Today I had 2 cups of coffee (I am not suppose to have caffeine until week 8), I went back to puffing on the occasional cigar about 2 weeks ago, in the last week I have started having either wine or a little whiskey with my cigar. I was told not to go to the gym until week 6 but found myself there for the first time today (4 weeks after surgery). I feel great and healthy and strong, I have plenty of energy. I had surgery on a Wednesday and would have gone back to work on Friday if I hadn't already turned in my time card for the week. I did go back to work the Monday after surgery and never had any problems, not even any discomfort. I think everybody is different and we can all tolerate things differently. I don't think I am doing anything wrong when it comes to my recovery or weight loss but I do feel a little guilty for not following all the instructions I was given. -
I agree. Seems you need to clean up your diet and make better choices. Sooth your sick throat with ice or yogurt next time.

MCT Oil, Keto..an alternate way to eat Post VGS
Nancy MBGC replied to GeTnBackuP's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't try tuna with yogurt. Sounds absolutely ghastly! It's been my experience with the NUTS that I've worked with in the hospital, that discussing fats is difficult. They don't tend to be big on any fat, bad or good. -
My plan allowed purees starting on day 3. What does your plan look like for you? I noticed on day 4, I ate 1 bite of yogurt. Now, at 8 weeks I can eat 4oz of puree, but don't feel full unless I'm eating dense protein like meat. To me, full feels gross. Even if you can eat more, stick to the amount prescribed and you will be fine. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

Yeah on the protein shake, that's what I found on my 2 hypothetical days too. I had to add in 10-25g of protein powder to hit it at the 1/4cup per meal stage. How much volume do you think you're eating total per meal? Is it about a 1/2 cup to a cup you think? Or does it depend on what the food is: ie 2-3oz dense protein v. 1/2c yogurt? TYTYTYTY for playing! It truly helps!
