    November 2022 surgery support!

    Hi everyone! had a couple of rough weeks dealing with a cold and a family member in ICU, but we are finally home and I'm back on track with my protein and fluids. Had to get an IV twice, I was getting leg cramps, but all should be moving towards the goal from now on. I do have a business trip next week but expect to follow plan since I'm now in the stage where I can basically eat up to 4oz of protein, salads, veggies and fruits, of course my intake is less than that, but it gives me variety.

    August surgery buddies!

    It's great to be past the halfway point, isn't it? I'm there too, although I haven't lost much weight so far this month. I was hoping to get to 90 kilos this moths, but I'm not sure I will. The good news is that I'm 91 kilos now, the same that I weighed after my son was born almost ten years ago. So, everything I gained in the last decade is now gone. The exercise routine is not going well, unfortunately. There's too much ice and snow to do a lot of walking outside, and both my son and I got sick in the first week of January, and I'm still recovering. J haven't had a lot of energy after work, but hopefully I can make it to the gym next week.

    Hi All my first post here had my surgery on 1/9. Only lost 4 lb in one week. I am reading some folks have lost as much as 10-15 lbs in the same period. Concerning? HW: 340 lb Surgery day: 275 lb
  5. So i just got back from a trip to Puerto Rico (work trip) and man that place is not for people who had weight loss surgery. 1st there is no sugar free anything. especially drinks. No sugar free gatorade, powerade ect... Nothing low carb. Bread is a huge huge part of everything. I even went to a walmart and nothing. just some protein bars and such. Only protein shakes i could find were just regular ensure and some other strange brand i have not seen. Best part was i finally fit in a coach seat without issue. before i would spill over to the next seat or be so tight it would be so uncomfortable. Now i fit perfect with plenty of room to spare. Got to say i am happy to be back.

    Noom Weight loss Program

    the last 20 lbs are a BEAR to get off. Soon after year 1, I was losing around 2 lb a month, even though I was working pretty hard at it. I don't know if any diet programs are going to any more successful at taking the last 20 lbs off quickly, because the fact is, you are likely eating A LOT fewer calories now than you were when you started. I've gained 10 lbs this year, and am working like a demon to get it off. But I'm losing a measly 1/2 lb or so a week (so same as when I was trying to get the last 20 lbs off after my bypass surgery). Reason being - back when I weighed over 300 lbs, it took 3000 (or maybe even more) calories to maintain that weight. Right now, at 160-ish lbs, it takes about 1600 calories to maintain my weight. To lose a lb a week, you have to cut 500 calories a day (or burn up 500 calories a day - which is A LOT of exercise!). To lose 2 lbs a week means cutting 1000 calories a day. That would put me at 1100 kcal/day if I wanted to lose 1/2 lb a week, and 600 kcal/day if I wanted to lose 2 lbs a week. Ah...not happening ( and also not healthy - the only people who should be eating 600 kcal/day should be under medical monitoring, like we were in the early weeks and months after WLS). On the flip side, when I was eating 3000 kcal a day at my highest weight, I could have easily found 1000 or even 1500 calories a day to cut and still been eating at a healthy level (I'm not saying it's easy - dieting never is - but at 3000 calories, it's very feasible to cut 1000 or 1500 calories - not so when you're only averaging (and maintaining on) 1600 cal/day). So by cutting 1000-1500 calories/day, that averages out to about 2-3 lbs a week. But again, cutting that many calories NOW would be impossible for me. long way of saying - it's hard to get those last few pounds off because there are only so many calories you can cut and still remain healthy. I've said this before, but back when I weighed over 300 lbs, I'd mentally roll my eyes at these barely overweight women at Weight Watchers meetings who'd moan and complain about how hard it was to lose 10 lbs. "Ha!", I would think, "try losing 200 lbs!". Now I totally get it... I'm not saying don't try. Your efforts WILL work. But your weekly losses will be in ounces now, not pounds.

    Regain 4 Years out

    YES…I’m going on 5 years post and have had 50 lbs of regain. For me it was significant increase of alcohol during Covid, stress, and inactivity. I weighed in on January 1 and was NOT happy with the number. I’m doing dry January, have exercised 6 days per week and have gone back to the basics. I’ve only lost 1.2 lbs which is very discouraging. I’m almost questioning if I have metabolism issues. Either way, I feel GREAT getting back on track. I’ve upped my water, have been eating Whole foods, and am moving my body again. I’m just hoping I can get the weight off!
  9. Hi there I am curious if anyone has tried a weight loss program called noom? I had a bypass 21 months ago and I still have 18 pounds left to lose to reach my goal weight Of 128 lbs. The surgery was amazing but I feel like it’s very easy to experience stalls and start to lose focus. They report that most people will reach their goal weight by 18 months and afterwords effects of the surgery will start to diminish which is not an encouraging thing to hear! Would love to hear others stories or advice on how they lost those last 20 lbs etc😊 Michele

  11. I checked my own progress at 10 weeks post op and I'd lost 22lb since surgery date. The best thing to do is to discuss this with your surgical team to see what they think. Good luck
  12. Look at it this way... you lost more than 10% of your weight in 10 weeks. That's a huge accomplishment! You're doing great! We all experience self doubt and wonder if we're on track or if we're losing slower than normal... that's incredibly common and I went through the same thing. But, trust me, you're on track and doing fantastic! You lost 10% of your weight in 10 weeks! Celebrate that!

    Post-op tips/necessities

    I ghave two cats so had to hold a pillow day and night to protect tummy from their pounce. Recliner or bed. My son stayed with me three days after 2 nights in hospital. The fifth day I no longer took pain meds. Having your sippy cup, timer, liquids, protein drinks ready for the liquid diet. When getting groceries for puree stage fatigue hit. Get just a few groceries at a time due to low food input-low energy reserves. I was so shocked at the low level. Bonus was more chances of exercise, walking around store.

    Dumping Syndrome

    I had a bit too much hummus I think it was week 3 at the beginning of the soft foods stage and didn't vomit but had all the other symptoms within like 20-30 mins. Havent had it with anything else thankfully [emoji3478].   15. You’ve lost 45lbs since surgery - that’s a good amount so far. Something worth celebrating. 🏆 Never compare your weight loss journey with anyone else. It will only drive you down the road to crazy town. There are too many factors that can influence your rate of loss: genetics, medical history, weight loss history, medications, age, gender, stalls, etc. And you lost a lot pre surgery which can affect your rate of loss after surgery - you’re at a lower weight which means you won’t lose as quickly as you did when you started back in April. There are averages which can be used as a guideline but as with all averages some lose more & some lose less & there’s nothing wrong with that. What does your team say (they know you & your situation better) ?

  17. I like meal prepping because I make healthier choices and save money. I use the OXO toddler 4oz containers and weirdly it also holds 4oz in meat weight. Earlier in healing I used the 2oz but now that size is convenient for carrying salad dressing or a sauce (not 2oz of sauce but what you need for you.) I prep for 3-4 days out so food stays fresh. I fill up on veggies after the 4 oz of meat. Last week I made a pot roast for Sunday dinner for the family and before serving the family took out 3 servings for 3 lunches. I rotated between mini bell peppers, broccoli and cauliflower, and one day of raspberries. (I’m currently trying to up my iron.) Chicken or eggs are a quick dinner. This week I’m going to cook up buffalo meat into homemade marinara and serve it with different veggies like squash or beans (chili) one plan is to put it on cauliflower crust pizza. I’ll keep the meat premeasured in the little 4oz containers. Restaurants measure food all the time with ice cream scoops and weight scales to be careful about uniform portions. They prep food too. I guess all that restaurant work normalized planning, prepping and measuring food for me. It also lets you take advantage of seasonal/regional foods that are on sale. I got the buffalo last fall and froze it. Right now I’m waiting for pork and lamb prices to drop. I have some salmon burgers in the freezer to get creative with, or I might check out the tofu prices. Anyway you would use ground meat you could replace with firm tofu, just add the tofu last at the last minute before eating.

    Fibromyalgia and Meds

    strictures are pretty rare with sleeve (about 5% of bypass patients get them - not sure of the percentage of sleevers, but suffice it say, although not unheard of, it's very uncommon). I didn't have sleeve (I had bypass), but the PA at my clinic said we could probably handle any pill that was the size of a pencil eraser, or smaller. He was right. I was able to swallow all pills except for two as soon as I got home from the hospital. One of them was split-able. The other one the PA said I could wait on for a couple of weeks, so I did - at the end of that period, I was able to swallow it.
  19. Hi All, I am back! I am having my Lapband removed. The port has been an issue. I’m having the band removed and vertical sleeve revision on the same day, February 2, 2023. I have been dealing with Fibromyalgia since 2014 and take three different medications for it. The meds just for my fibromyalgia number 12 throughout the day. If I don’t take these fibromyalgia meds I cannot get up out of bed and function. And I work full time. I asked my Bariatric doctor can I still take my meds right after surgery and he said I could with liquid. 😱 Those 12 fibromyalgia pills, doesn’t include all the other meds I am on and the pain pills he will prescribe. Some of the pills cannot be crushed and some cannot even be taken with food. I feel like I am going to have an issue with all the meds and fluids, and God help me me if I have any strictures. I take a total of 15 pills a day, so I would like to hear from people who had a vertical sleeve and lots of pills/meds they had to take everyday during the first four weeks of their surgery. Thanks!   20. I don't think it matters that much whether you lose the weight slowly or quickly. That skin was stretched out to cover whatever your heaviest weight was, and once it's stretched out, it's not likely to bounce back. If you're young and not very overweight (maybe 20 or 30 lbs), it could snap back, but at the weight most of us start at, you'll probably have at least *some* loose skin. I'd follow my program and not try to eat more just for fear of loose skin. You want to lose all the weight you can, while still remaining healthy. This is your one opportunity in your lifetime when you have a chance to lose a massive amount of weight with a lot less effort than it took before surgery (granted, it does take effort, but the surgery really helps it along!) I lost over 200 lbs, and I had a TON of loose skin (have since had it removed). Honestly, no one knew it was there except for me and my husband . For most of us, it's pretty easy to hide in clothes. I think I'm speaking on behalf of most/all of the "vets" here who've had to deal with loose skin - we'd take the loose skin any day of the week over being morbidly obese again. ANY DAY!

    Need Encouragement

    14lbs in a month is a lovely loss. I have seen it said that the weight loss can be slower when you have gone from a sleeve to a bypass. On this journey our emotions can really mess with us, Some days we feel up and the next we are down. I had a bad couple of days this week. It only took a small change to make me feel like I could do this again. I am also on bipolar meds and anti d's. Are you able to go for gentle walks? This will help your circulation and help the blood move around your body and help you in the healing process. Check in with dietician to get some advice on what things you can do at this stage. Might be small things will make a big difference. Breathe. 😊

    10 years out From Sleeve

    January 2023 I got very ill in September of 2022 - had a tear in my hiatius - a hiaitial hernia tear - that was bleeding into my chest area. No symptoms until I was so weak and tired that I couldn't function well. Ended up needing transfusions and emergency hospitalization to figure out what was wrong. 5 days in patient with no food or water, just IVs. Lots of testing and then came home on lots of iron pills and vitamins. Three weeks later had a gastric bleed.... more hospital stay of 4 days and endoscope and found out that I have some, well, a lot of issues in my "normal sleeve anatomy" - lots of areas that were bleeding. No actual ulcers, just ... issues. Now will be doing weekly iron infusions - no more oral iron; and meds to help heal my stomach lining. I lost 10 pounds in the hospital, but was warned to eat well and drink lots of fluids and to put back at least 2/3 of what was lost in the hospitalizations as a good portion of that is blood building. I craved macaroni and cheese. Not something I even usually like much ! So I ate that and high protein, lots of water and saw my doctors on a weekly basis. I, of course gained weight back as I healed. But decided to be VERY VERY careful in what I ate as directed by my doctors to not piss off my gut - and then added in what I knew to do for my over all health. My 13 year old tool was still there and of the appropriate size - I had NOT "stretched out" my sleeve in 13 years. I was assured by the gastro doc that it was fine ! So I took the 2 total pound weight loss from surgery and then post op required gain.... and have lost 6 more pounds in 3 months. I am out of the 30s BMI for the first time in ...... more than 40 years. Yes, BMI of 29 on the Smart BMI for my age. I am doing much better, will probably need monthly iron infusions on a regular basis; as the oral iron is not working for my irritable gut. But I am a seemingly healthy almost 67 year old, now wearing a size 14 petite slacks to work ! The last time I did that .... I was about 23 years old.... I have almost lost half of me.

This is oddly reassuring to me because I'm a rule follower who needs to trust in the process...I needed to hear that if I follow the plan, I won't fail. I have a consultation in one more week, so I'm trying to make sure my head is wrapped around the choice I'm making. Ha! Your explanation helps tremendously!

    Pre-Op by a month and I'm scared...

    You are taking a leap into the unknown and are bound to be a little scared. We all went there. The surgery is one of the safest going. I can't find the figures but they are amazing. I personally ran into the operating theatre because I was so sick of my three week pre op diet.
