    Thanksgiving Blues

I started my 2 week liquid pre-op on Monday the 25th... so I sat out on the porch while everyone ate...needless to say I felt very depressed. Yes i had the option to be a no show. However, I thought to myself I need to confront these real world situations now. So, I understand the feeling like an outsider. My husband did the right thing and told me that everything was not that great and too greasy and I would have hated it anyway lol. My family felt guilty but I had to reassure them all that they shouldn't apologize for my decision to make this life change. I assured them that doing this and sacraficing a gut busting meal meant that I'd have that many more holidays with them as a happier healthier me. I think since I am the only one in my family who is overweight it's very hard for them to understand but none the less they all support me. Also, it was just nice to be with my whole family under one roof and have the day off of work lol.

    First stall

I'm 8 mths post op. I never had the three week stall. I'm having an 8 th month stall, almost 2 weeks. Frustrating!!!
  3. Hi bandsters and bandsters-to-be! I'd like to meet up with those from our area in a couple of weeks at a restaurant that will suit our needs. Consider this an open invitation to sit with people and share a non-judgemental meal. (ie: no-"Is that all you're having?!") We can compare stories and provide information to those considering a band. It'll be fun to meet folks in our area and perhaps be our own local support team. If you are interested, just drop me a line here or send me a PM. We'll see what the response is like and book a place from there. Jeri :hungry:

    workouts

Hey everyone, I am a little over 6 months out and down 90 lbs...ive been extremely committed to going to the gym 3 times a week. I usually do about 45 mins on the elliptical and burn about 550 calories. At this point i really want to start incorporating muscular workouts (all the machines) in the gym. If I cut down to 30 mins on the elliptical and do all the machines for 15 mins will I still lose weight? Just scared by cutting down the cardio will limit the weight loss. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated!!

    complications

Hi jr, I too had complications with my surgery,(thought mine was the worst possible scenario till I read yours) my doc cut a blood vessel during surgery and I bled internally overnite(passed out repeatedly) and was re-admitted for blood tranfusions, but only stayed in hospital 1 day.33 days is insane! I hope you feel better!! It took me 2 weeks to even feel like standing up after that, and I definately regret having surgery at all now.

    Ok hope this helps!

I have never had issues going.... Except right after the liquid diet phase post surgery I started going infrequently, which as a person who went 1-2X/day it was freaking me out even though I was told it would happen. However, I'm now back to being regular...although a new regular...every 1-2 days and they are healthy. I make sure that I get a min 64 ounces of water. On the few occasions that I have missed my water intake I've regretted it. It makes me so constipated!!! I also get fiber in my food. I have not cut out fruits and veggies. I also drink a green smoothie made in a bullet 1-3X/ week which keeps all the fiber in. I also use some low carb bread products like healthy life bread and tumaro's tortillas, which have a lot of fiber. I also like the Kellogg's fiber/protein bars sometimes I eat one a day, but not always. I don't know if they make it anymore, but at some point I bought 3 boxes of individual packets of Splenda with fiber in them. So whenever I need a sugar substitute I add those. I take them with me everywhere just in case. I also exercise 5-6 days a week and that also will help keep you regular.
  8. I went to Dr. Daoud at the begining of Oct. I ad my request for psych evaluation and the nutritional evaluation a week later, they both have been approved and submitted for approval to see the surgeon. The doc office told me that would take about 5 to 7 days and to call back next week. What happens next? Do I see the surgeon and schedule a date or are their more evaluations and tests that need to be passed and then those have to be submitted to insurance??? I keep getting a few different answers from Dr Daoud's office and Dr. Oliak's office. HELP!

    Self pay-

WASaBubble Butt.....yes I know about the policy having to be writtien to include it. Unfortunately they refuse to allow it. Four years ago when I started at the hospital we had BCBS and it was covered. Now we are forced to only have UHC and it is no longer covered. We thought that since they opened a bariatric unit that they would cover it. The hospital I work for is my no way in a position that they can not afford it. They are in the top of profits in this entire area. We have three hospitals and they just acquired another one. Not to include all the urgent cares and the surgery centers and the other satelite buildings they have and are building as we speak.

    Calories & protein per day?

Our surgeon said: Eat healthy. Do not eat three meals a day. Eat only when you are hungry. It is working for us. Good luck!

  15. I am a steak and chicken person as of now (not banded). I have a fear that I will never eat steak or chicken due to the band. I am also a big pizza person, but I know that has to change. I've removed red meat from my diet, but I can eat steak. I often eat chicken. I eat pizza when I want it. My question to you all is....After you switch to the solid food stage, are you able to eat some what normal, or can you not tolerate certain foods. Some people find there are things they can't tolerate. Some find that as long as they're chewing, monitoring bites, and swallowing bandster style, they can eat anything. (this is me) Some state that they can NEVER have meat or chicken...or both. some say fish (tuna, sushi) they can't eat. I would just eat the raw fish and no rice...or very little rice if possible. It's completely individual, and often seems to change. E.g. I know a LOT of people who could eat chiken in the beginning, but can't get it down now. I guess I am just normal having a concern as to the diet...way of life that will happen once I am banned. I don't want to be that, "special" diet man the rest of my life. I would guess that more bandsters than not find that they eat regular, well-balanced meals - just small ones. Which is a heckuva good approach, IMO. I would like to eat normal foods with limitation. Have a drink or three (lol) after dinner (a half our that is) The band does nothing to prevent drinking, unless you're clogged. That's one of the nice things about it, vs. some other WLS options (not that you can still drink, but that in and of itself, it doesn't exclude anything). You know what I mean...it is a concern of mine, but I am sure you have more experience than me....I am not banned yet. Just behave and we won't ban you. j/k - banned, banded, har har. It's completely individual. I had dinner with 4 other bandsters, and we all ordered something different based on 1) what we CARED to tolerate, and 2) what we COULD tolerate. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
  16. The thing about the band is that after a few months of banding you really don't care about food. It no longer matters what you are eating vs. what others are eating. Look at the new threads of newbies, they are all about what can I eat, how much can I eat, when can I eat it? After you have been banded the obsession with foods dies down and you begin eating to live, or when you remember. That would have been impossible for me to comprehend in the beginning. I would have thought that would never happen. But it has. I do admit to being a little annoyed this week because I am on a seriously strict diet until Saturday but then I'm back to my usual foods. Today the only thing I'm bored with is people commenting on my portion size. I cover it up a bit and move food around my plate so it looks like I ate more than I did, but I do get sick of people questioning why I eat such small amounts but I suspect that will happen for the rest of my life. I guess my point is that my focus has shifted from what I will eat to how I explain portion sizes to others who are nosey. No way to tell what you will be able to eat or how much of it. You won't know that until you get there. Seems as though food choices expand a bit after you have a lot of practice with the band but in the end you'll find that you just don't care.

    Surgery Canceled ?

I guess the high calcium is a risk as far as anathesia, what ever they would have given me could interact with the high calcium and cause my electrolites to go wacky. it was a risk to my heart, and uncontrolable muscle spasms. it was the anathesia dr that actually canceled it.So I have to take care of this calcium level before I can be banded. from what my primary Dr. can tell, it is probably hyperparathyroidism. Which would probably result in surgery on that. Removal of the BAD parathyroid/s. I am going to try and maintain low quanity of food, and also be very careful on what I eat. No pop, no snacks,no bread, potatoes ect. Of course when I get ready for the band, I will have to do the two week liquid diet AGAIN.... keep me posted on how you and hubby are doing. and feeling. Lois

    Body Signs

I can't have anything besides yogurt and clear liquids until 2 weeks. Then the only bread sort of item I can have are small healthier crackers like a few wheat thins and those are sparingly. At week 9 I can have flatbread. That is the only mention of bread in my plan.

I had my surgery 7-27 and will not be able to eat bread until Oct. Has anyone tried pita bread 4 weeks out?

    Some good news

8 weeks out and lost 32 pounds. I feel so much better. I'd do it again a million times over.
  23. So this is me. My name is Kathi, 28 years old, 165cm tall and 143kgs. I've been tooing and froing about getting bariatric suregery for 2 years now. I have been big most of my life. Teased by kids as I'm sure many of you can relate to, and even worse have been discriminated against in all areas of life due to my size, including being passed over for promotions and postings to foreign climes. So not fair! So 2 years ago I got on track to get a lapband... I was scared and had a lot going on in my life at the time: Broken up relationship, job going weird, and many other things, so I chickened out after seeing the surgeon. Now, I have matured and come to know myself more (its amazing what you find out about yourself when you lose the deadwood of a bad relationship and a bad job). Now I have realised that I need this tool to stop me becoming what I see my whole family becoming. I dont want Diabetes, or heart problems, I dont want to be immobile, I dont want to be prejudiced against anymore. I have tried everything! fad diets, weight watchers, diet pills, you name it So here I am, Surgery booked in for 30 November. My Parents are giving me a loan to have it done (not that they can really afford it though, but they know its what I need...), and I will be paying it off for the next 5 years. But I feel its worth it. I now have 6 weeks of preop diet in front of me, plus learning to eat, exercise, and change the way I think. Its a hard road, but I'm hoping at the end of it, the rny will be a life saver. I'm on Day 2 of pre op diet. I think taking all things in context it's been successful. Minor slip ups, but I'm proud of my salmon, bok choi and broccoli in the face of others eating a mountain of pizza around me that I was pretty strong to only steal 2 bites of pizza. Still not ideal, but better than caving and eating a half pizza like I normally would. Plus going to 3 pubs this weekend and only having a tiny taste of beers that the others bought. I have the motivation, I just hope I can hold onto it! 40 minute wii dance workout this evening - so shattered. My cat thinks I'm crazy, but what does she know, she's a cat! I'm looking forward to sharing my journey with all of you, and sharing in yours along the way
  24. Hello! I have a question? I am on puréed proteins for a week. I had my surgery on March 3rd. When I eat I am never getting that really full feeling like I thought I would get. I just get a tightness feeling right in the middle of my cheat when I am done with food. Does that mean you are full? Thanks everyone!

    Protein Pills

They do contain them but the majority of the protein is collagen from my understanding and research. Thats why most of them recommend to take it with food, to aid absorption. It is very confusing..I asked my dietician and she said they were fine but to be aware of the amount of sugar. I have heard others say that they are crap but there are also people who came to the same conclusion as I did. *shrug I am not sure. I have been using them to subsidize the amount of protein I get, because I don't have the capacity to eat all of my protein and I have been fine. My first month labs will be done this week so I will let you know how the come out.
