Who will you tell (or not tell) about WLS?
ahillig replied to ChubRub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't tell anyone at first because I didn't want to be judged or get some snide remarks but in reality, everyone has been so supportive. I'm an ER nurse and while my hospital doesn't do bariatric surgeries another one in town does so it's possible we could get a bariatric surgery patient. All of my coworkers are genuinely supportive and I have no problem with them asking questions. My sister got married a month ago and the rest of the bridal party was curious when I had my husband bring me chipotle (bowl with chicken, pinto beans, black beans, and cheese) after declining donuts and McDonalds. When I told them I had gastric bypass everyone was supportive and even asked questions about how I went about getting the surgery. One of the gals even said she was going to check her insurance to see if it was covered. I was so scared at first because of other peoples reactions but this surgery gave me a whole other lease on life that I wouldn't trade for the world. Each day that passes I'm even more confident in my choice to have surgery and wish I would've done it sooner. It's been hard as hell, way harder than losing weight without surgery, but I wouldn't trade how I feel now for the world. -
I have no answers for you but can relate. I think I saw a post on here a year or so ago mentioning the higher rate of dental issues in bariatric patients. I'll be interested to see what others have to say. I was sleeved April 2018 and for the last year I've also struggled with dental issues. I have mild periodontal disease in the back 3 teeth, both sides/upper and lower where I never had issues before. I've noticed more "staining" and decay. I haven't had to have any significant dental work, but the signs are showing a future with dental work. I also brush at least twice/day, floss and use restorative mouth rinses. My hygienist said that it might be related to acid reflux.
-
I had the sleeve done in July of 2014 and the first 2 years were great. Lost 85lbs and kept it off, reflux was gone, diabetes gone, hbp gone. I went from 10-15 pills a day down to 2. After 2 years I started noticing reflux issues coming back and had to have my gall bladder removed. I have slowly started gaining some of the weight back and my craving for sugar is ridiculous...mainly my fault. In the process of trying to reset my pouch right now and trying to curb the sugar cravings by reducing my carbs. My main concern now is my dental health. For the last 2 years my teeth have been falling apart. They keep breaking, the cavities are ridiculous. I’ve had my bridge fall off only after being on for 4yrs due to decay underneath it. I’ve had a crown fall off due to decay. I’ve had 2 root canals and to date I’ve had to get 4 more crowns because my teeth keep breaking off. I’ve spent about $4,000 in dental work so far with insurance and I have about another $8,000 left to do. My dentist has recommended 2 implants because 2 of my teeth are so bad off. I could see if this were due to dental hygiene, but it’s not. I brush 2, sometimes 3 times a day, floss, use Sensodyne Intensive Enamel Repair and Enamel On(flouride toothpaste from dentist) every time I brush and I don’t rinse it off, I let it sit on my teeth, flouride rinse, and my teeth are regularly cleaned every 6 months by the dentist. I also take my multivitamin and my calcium vitamins(actually take 1 more than is needed) every day. My dentist says he has quite a few bariatric patients who are also experiencing a lot of dental issues. Has anyone had a lot of problems with their teeth and if so have you addressed it with your gastric surgeon? What are they saying about it? I was not told 5 years ago that this was even an issue.

I’m starting to despise my chewable vitamins...
SorryNameTaken replied to pssk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take Bariatric Advantage and don't mind them at all right now. I have the same problem where I can take vitamins for a while and then all of a sudden they start making me sick and I don't know why, so I regularly change my vitamins. The very first one I took as a sample made my stomach upset, but after that, they haven't bothered me at all. I hope you find something that works for you! Maybe your insurance has some other options that may work! -
let's see 2nd- my technological HAPPY- bariatric surgery, DaVinci robots, a wonderful teaching/ land-grant college in OSU- WEXNER Medical Center- the "Bells and Perks" that allowed ME to go through RNY surgery at 72, not only SURVIVE the SURGERY, which, let's face it, could have resulted at one time to die on the table, and that I still am traveling this road toward finding the True Buried ME underneath my FatShell and Sorrows. A good type to be grateful for? Protein Shakes they are still important in my protein- deficency- prone- existence, perhaps forever? TODAY the 5th- that I still have heat and a roof over my head- Landlord and I are locked in a BATTLE- my rent has become untenable- 2/3 of my monthly Social Security allotment- can't pay him, utilities, life and household insurances and have any cash left to supplement foods when my Food Stamp allotment is exceeded. According to Metro balance sheet, applied but voucher has not come through, I should be paying no more than $286 monthly for shelter costs, WELL this place is a WHOLE LOT MORE than THAT! Looking fairly frantically for another place, so far no LUCK, senior housing won't take my son cause he's under 50, let alone 62, most places won't willingly take even 2 small cats, one demanded I get rid of one and have remaining ones claws amputated, which is truly what declaring is. Lease up, Landlord making Eviction noises, trying to at least appease him , if I caught up totally it would be 1.40 times my social security, government doesn't pay in advance, you know, "So No Way Jose" there. Tried to budget it all out, ask for Social Agencies help, 2 different face- to- face meetings still on tap in November. And some of my elective surgeries are becoming Mandatory- this is a BAD SITUATION for This Old Girl, exhausted what savings Tomkitten and I had to hold on even THIS FAR, ding- donged if I know where to jump, CAN'T AFFORD TO STAY- CAN'T AFFORD TO MOVE- but at This point still WARM and under Roof. And for the upcoming 6th- my area of Ohio hasn't had snow yet! And my last 5th thought- I live in a Free Country where I have the chance to exercise my VOTE and I will go to the polls this afternoon. Elect local leaders, and confound the REST who THOUGHT they had a sure thing to be elected! I can complain with fervor, can't I , because I DID Care enough for my city and country's state of being, I VOTED, always have since I became of Legal Age, 55 years ago! FRUSTR8 OUT for NOW!😝👍🌈🇺🇸

My office recently submitted my paperwork to CIGNA for approval. I received a decision within a day but the claim was denied due to where I’d be having the surgery. Cigna stated the location where they wanted to perform the surgery as outpatient is not on the 2019 Bariatric Center of Excellence list. I checked and the surgery center is in fact on the list. I actually had my EGD performed there and they paid that claim. I called CIGNA and the rep stated that the ruling they gave is not accurate and outdated. The rep also stated that the case manager is reaching out to my office to rectify the issue. I am frustrated but trying to remain hopeful. Has anybody ever been initially denied by CIGNA and then approved?

The Journey Continues, OR, Third Time's the Charm
Machalo replied to Machalo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks again for responding, Chris. The weekend was partially a dieter's nightmare as we were out doing things and even at meal times, so I found myself eating out. And hardly any water; I don't drink much of anything when I'm out and about because I'll have to suddenly go to the bathroom and there won't be one for the next 20-30 miles. I live in a rural-ish area so there are lots of breaks where there is nowhere to stop. Sunday is usually Church and then D&D gaming, but this week we skipped Church because of hubby's not feeling great. Still had a blast playing D&D though. Anyway, hubby and I talked about surgery and that I was being committed this time to following the plan because I wanted a successful surgery and recuperation. I want to be in the best shape I can get into at my weight before I go under the knife so I'll have an easier recovery time. He was supportive, if a little non-enthusiastic. Then again, he's still struggling with colitis and now he's caught an upper respiratory infection of some kind. My poor darling. In total, the weekend had positives and negatives and wound up just about even. I have not stepped on the scales today, since I went for my Psych clearance, I haven't been drinking my water like I should be. I'll hit it tonight at home, dinner is Toad in the Hole, which I hadn't made in forever. I may opt for a shake instead. One step at a time, one meal at a time. The Psych appointment went well. I ended up telling him my entire life story in 20 minutes, he said he has no issue with me having bariatric surgery and was going to call my practice to see exactly what they need for him to say. Nice man. Another checkmark ticked off the list. i'm getting closer, but my team is still saying early April until sorgery. Argh. Oh well, it will turn out for the best. I have to keep telling myself that when I start to get impatient. Have a brilliant Monday everyone and thanks for stopping by. ❤️ -

There is actually a whole fat romaine head packed into the bottom of the container! But, yeah, the sizes and ratios are off for a bariatric patient vs. your average active guy. -
First Consult GREAT.. Insurance Changed DISAPPOINTED
Machalo replied to 3sonsitk's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Aetna and just had my NUT appointment last Thursday. My insurance did not change, woohoo! I was worried that it might have after looking at this thread, but it's rules for bariatric surgery are still the same within my company. @3sonsitkMaybe your company stopped carrying the insurance rider for the procedures or something? @ChubRub have you checked with your version of Aetna yet? -
CHEWABLE MULTIVITAMINS???
SorryNameTaken replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor requires chewables or powder for the first 3 months. Since I'm just over a week post op, it's kind of nice to get to chew something. I take the Bariatric Advantage chewable Advanced Multi EA and their Calcium Chews. The multivitamins smells terrible, but tastes fine. It did upset my stomach the first time I took it, but never thereafter. I take the fruit flavored calcium chews and they are so good! It's like a softer starburst, so it's a nice treat twice a day! -

I'm sorry to hear your struggling. I know from experience how life can throw you curve balls and before you know it, you find yourself picking up bad habits do the detriment of your health. First, you've recognized the problem. That's a GOOD thing! Now, get back on the program. Log your food. Get your water in. Start exercising, even if it's just walking. I'm only a couple of months after you in terms of surgical dates. I know that I can eat more than 4 ounces sometimes. It depends on the time of day and what I'm eating. I'm told that it's normal to be able to eat more over time. I'd estimate that at most, I can eat 1 cup. I find this OK and I'm not concerned that I've stretched my sleeve. I no longer have a relationship with my surgeon. It wasn't bad blood or anything, I am no longer in the state where I had my surgery. So, my primary doctor monitors my labs and I have a GI doc that helps me with anything sleeve related. If you're truly worried you've stretched your sleeve or if you feel you need the collaboration of a bariatric team, I think I'd start with my primary doc. Sometimes surgeons are unwilling to take on a case that someone else started, something about "cleaning up someone else's mess." (or so I'm told-I'm a nurse case manager and have LOTS of experience with that) So, a self-referral may not be effective. Use the network you have to get in the door: your other doctors. Good luck! You got this! -
😄 My hospital had special bariatric gowns, so I was completely covered front to back when I was walking. I brought pajama pants just in case my gown did not cover well enough. I ended up wearing them despite my gown being quite covering. A lot of people bring a robe or just wear a second hospital gown to cover their backs, it can just be tricky with the IV, so you may only be able to drape it over your shoulders. I barely packed anything: - I wore the same shirt to the hospital and home from the hospital - A pair of pajama pants in case I didn't want to wear the pants I wore to the hospital home - Multiple chapsticks - Phone charger - Slippers (Only worse these out of the hospital) - 2 pairs of underwear (I didn't wear any underwear my entire hospital stay, I just went free!) - A sports bra (never felt inclined to put this on until after I got home from the hospital) - Wallet (never needed this) The only thing I didn't pack that I asked for were breath mints. My breath was pretty nasty from all the tubes during surgery. Once I coughed up all the nastiness, it got a little better, but they were still nice to have.

Surgery Prep - What was your must haves.
SabrinaGoddess posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So, I decided to move forward with the surgery around Oct 17th, consulted with my doc on Oct 30th, Set surgery date for Dec 9th! (I am self-pay) So this week I have to schedule my mental evaluation and nutritionist appointment. I am so excited I can just scream! My flight arrangements are made and hotel room booked! (flying to Denver for my doctor and my sister will be coming to stay with me after surgery) So I started fooling around on Amazon a bit looking for some carry on bags for my flight and stuff. I saw some pretty cool Bariatric plates and bowls with line guides (WOW) and a great little mini blender to take with me for the hotel room. So, my question for you who have already been sleeved. In hindsight, what did you wish you had the first week after surgery that you did not expect? I will be in a hotel room for 3 days after surgery. 👀All of a sudden it hit me yesterday that this is GONNA happen! You know when you plan for something so hard you focus on it happening and all the little details, but yesterday it truly hit me that this is just right around the corner.
I was looking on Amazon for some great cookbooks and I also found some pretty cool bariatric plates. Man things have come a long way since I was banded in 2009 and unbanded in 2012!
I AM SO EXCITED!

All I know, is that this journey took 100% commitment for me to change my behaviors with food. Because of my personality, there really isn't such a thing as "everything in moderation." Even in maintenance, where I give myself the weekend to be semi-indulgent, I find it's much easier to do my normal daily thing that I do through the week, then have a small indulgent dinner. But that's in maintenance--not during WLM. When I was in WLM, I did have to keep my cals in the 600-750 range for losing. I concentrated on eating super nutritionally dense, low calorie, low fat, low carb foods and eating lean dense protein forward, with very low glycemic veggies on the end of the meal. I would seriously suggest working with a bariatric counselor to work on your food issues. Sorry you're struggling. You might start by filling out your stats so we can see how far you've come and what operation you had at a glance.

What's your reason for your obesity
Bianca S. replied to Siyaa Ela's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was always chubby as a kid. For as long as I can remember my grandpa and grandma were serving my sister and I as well as my cousins close to my age a full plate not a kids play like a big grown-up plate. We would not be able to get up from the table at meal time ever until we had finished what was served on our plate . For the longest time all the way through fifth Grade until my mother decided to move out and take care of my sister and I on her own without the help of her parents ( she was traveling a lot for work at the time reasoning why I would be with my grandparents) . And even after we moved whenever we would visit they would still have that role even if my mother was or wasn’t there with us. As I got older I knew I could say no to them but honestly I did not know how to tell them. Once I got into high school that’s when we started to be able to serve our own plates at their house, but I do not know portion control due to the mount they were service I knew it was too much but I still serve myself what I wanted. After high school and partially high school that’s when I saw my Weight go up during high school I would fluctuate from 200 pounds to 270 pounds. And always diet work out but I will always be hungry with the portions I would put down and so dieting did not work for me. About three years ago I started to Look into weight loss surgery I just never know how to approach it. Almost a year ago I had my gallbladder removed because I was in so much pain I was Admitted to the hospital to see what was the problem ensure enough I had gallstones. A week later I went to my follow up for my gallbladder surgery and the surgeon that did my surgery cannot see me for another two weeks but wanted me to be seen at one week by one of the surgeons and that is how I found my bariatric surgeon . He asked me if anyone has had talk to me about weight loss surgery now most people would probably be offended but I was not because I was actually looking into it before. So I got his card looked up reviews on him and others and And literally that day I met him I called to make my consultation and that is win my life started to change. -
Well maybe would have to say Mild Autism instead of bipolar, only have the depression side of it. Someone asked once if I was bipolar, started worrying that maybe I was and no one wanted ME to know it, turned out it was a line on her Bariatric SURGERY checklist, I constantly have to run through the Deporession one because Medicare mandated it, almost have the staff broke of asking, told the one nurse( who has my warped sense of humor too) I'm thinking of becoming a Homicidal manic, going to start with Nosy Parker medical staff and GOD can sort them into the appropriate piles- she giggled and I believe she'll stop asking soon. Besides my blue funk was because nobody wanted to do my RNY, took me 3 years 1 month of searching and begging, but joyfully my Dr Needleman was not an Surgical Wuss, be 14 months on Tuesday and even with my Rocky at times recovery I NEVER would want to return to pre- SURGERY, I was a Sad puppy- person then, ready to stop living, just waiting for the Death Angel to claim ME as his own- and now with hard hard work I AM ONE-HALF the SIZE I was then and Never will anybody will take that away!

KateBruin replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a couple bottles of the complete bariatric vitamin where you just chew 2x2 a day. They just became so gross I’ve switched to patches until my blood work says they aren’t working. My D is low but that’s normal for me so I do a weekly pill and folate low because I started methotrexate so I take folic acid pills. The patches are just so much easier. Praying they continue to work. 🤞🏼 -

I think that you should check in with your Dr. or Bariatric program, but a lot of changes are going on with you, a lot of people get emotional, your hormones are in an uproar.
