    Protein Drinks/Shakes

Most successful and healthy 'losers' who've been wls patients for a while disagree with doctors who say 'no Protein supps'....with a small pouch it's simply impossible to eat right and get as much protein as your body needs to maintain healthy muscles and hair and energy. I've 10 mo. out and still couldn;t eat enough solid foods to get my 100 gr. of protein. I don't use them as meal subsitutes very often, but they certainly help with the cravings and satisy a need for a sweet now and then. For examples.........I use the nectar Cappacino or Matrix chocolate in my coffee in the mornings (I add a little creamer) , the IDS vanilla/cinnamon in my hot tea, Nectar Peach Navel in Chrystal Lite or Water or tea, OrangeCream Matrix with water and ice as a smoothie. (I order mine from www.bariatriceating.com - they will send you a packet of samples if you want to try a lot of flavors/brands. I usually order what I need when they are on sale). My very favorite protein supplement is Micellar Milk....you can get it at VitaminShoppe store or at BE.com. or www.netrition.com (their shipping is less). It is 17 oz, 40 gr protein and it tastes somewhat like rice pudding. Lots of people use it in their coffee - I drink it straight (the vanilla).

    Port pain

Hey, thanks for that. I liken the pain to gallstones as I had them 10 years ago and had my gallbladder removed...and yes, it was on the right side. You know how we automatically cup something that hurts...like if you have a toothache, your hand comes up to hold it. Or if your side hurts, you put your hand there.... When it hurts, my hand naturally goes to the site of the pain...and it's the actual bump - the port. Thanks again for your post, hate it for you but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this mysterious pain.

Weight lifting to build vs to tone

Okay, I was thinking about the swimmers and wondering what Dara Torres does to get that fabuolous shape and all those muscles - so I Googled it (I love the internet). I share below (even though I appear to be accidentally tresspassing in the Men's Room - forgive me). BTW - she's 6 feet tall and 150 lbs. It's not something any of us folks with day jobs are going to be doing, but it shows that she has a great mix of cardio and weights work. What's your workout routine like now? I do a lot of core work, and I work out on a Swiss balance ball. I train with a coach from the Florida Panthers hockey team, and my body has completely changed. It's a very Fluid type of training, which is great, since swimming is a very fluid motion. In the weight room we concentrate on equipment that works a lot of different muscles at once. As for swimming, I'm now in the pool 5 days a week from 8 to 10 a.m. And I'm in the gym for an hour and a half, 4 days a week. Two days upper body, two days lower.

    Rumbling Tummy

Hi everyone When I first had my surgery 3 weeks ago my stomach rumbled in the hospital. Since then it has gotten much better. But in the last few days it has started up again. Very gassy! When I went for my post op appointment the doctor said one of my incisions was slightly infected and put me on liquid antibiotics. I guess that could be it? Has anyone else experienced this? Plus I'm not able to get in much more than 20oz of liquid daily. And Protein maybe 40gm. Any advice would greatly be appreciated! Surgery was 10/18
  5. Hi all, I am not often a poster, but I figured that if there was any group I might feel comfortable with, this should be the one. My name is Gary. I have a marginal BMI (39) for the surgery, but enough co-morbidities to make the grim reaper drool on his scythe. Thus my HMO gracefully allowed my band. Its been 10 days and I though I am only on the liquid diet, I am chafing at the bit to expand my intake. I actually gained 10 pounds of Fluid during my 36 hours in the hospital, and lost that and another 6 or 7 in the 8 days since. Since I am only at about 500 calories, I have stopped losing, but I hope that will change with the next diet phase soon. I see my nutritionist tomorrow. Anyway, I look forward to reading all your stories, comments and concerns. Just my opinion... I could be wrong! Good luck everyone.

@@Qtpie28 my doc told me not to gain any weight but loosing 5%, 10% wasn't required some docs/insurance do require that you loose 5% , 10% of your initial weight weighing 350 lbs you must loose either 35 lbs or 17.5 but, on the other hand the more you loose pre op, the better obviously that means you have all the less to loose post op follow all the necessary rules for WLS practice as you get ready for the big day these are rules you will be following for the rest of your healthier, happier, longer life good luck kathy

  8. Syntrax is offering a monthly promo for 10 packets of sample flavors of assorted choices for 14.00 including shipping. Thats a pretty good deal. Unjury offers a sampler with tge famous chocolate splendor & chicken soup flavors as well as vanilla & strawberry for 19.99+ shipping. Bjs bariatrics offers the ability to pick the flavors of your samples of nectars. And is in the $15 range+ shipping. My bartatric pantry offers syntrax samples pick your flavors & matrix samples assorted flavors. I have a blender bottle which helps mix things well but I still get tons of foam So far I've tried only the isopure ready to drink bottled from gnc - it was yucky & had a odd flavor. Had to choke it down. I tried the roadside lemonade from syntrax nectars & it was good, no odd flavors, just a gentle lemonade flavor quite nice. allons-y

    Binge eating

It is absolutely possible to still binge eat after surgery. Not at first. But eventually, yes. That's why it's SO important to do the hard work to deal with your binge eating disorder as the underlying root of your weight, and not ignore it. I would highly recommend finding an eating disorder therapist and working with them religiously throughout the process. I started meeting with one at 10 months post op and have been going to her weekly since then (currently 3 years post op). I know without a doubt I would have regained the weight I lost by now if I wasn't working so hard at the underlying causes. I also highly recommend the books by Geneen Roth. She deals with this a lot and her books were life-changing for me. It is a REALLY good sign that you are thinking about these things now. The more you are proactive, the better long term success you will have.

    Had my sleeve yesterday!

I've been using the strips but they're not helping as much as they do for others and I walk but it doesn't get rid of the pain either. I burp every now and then and it helps for a second but that's it. Does it hurt you guys when you get up to walk? For me, my stomach feels heavy and sore and then my biggest incision that my stomach came out of feels pulled at. It's bearable, but I stand for 5-10 minutes and need to sit back down again. I'm assuming that maybe I'm just still wore out from a major surgery but idk Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Central Jersey Sleeved 7/12!

@@jersey0601 I had no idea what to expect, but apparently my expectations were too high. I guess I just read a lot about people having a big loss immediately after surgery. I didn't have that and then i stalled after only 10 days. I'm just about 4 weeks out and this week I am seeing some movement on the scale after almost 3 weeks. It's frustrating- mostly because it makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong. And also reminiscent of all the dieting I did pre-sleeve that never produced any results. I'll keep moving forward following my nutritionists plan and tracking all my food. Hopefully it will pass! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. I have not had vsg yet but that is my plan and hope at this point . I have one ore month of supervised weight loss & then should be on my way . While having my Egd the doc said I had signs of avid acid reflux. This was new to me, I very rarely had any issues, only when I was pregnant. (3years ago). He then put me on med. for this "problem". I then within a week of taking this me started having indigestion like crazy and have felt awful ever since. I also was told during my stomach ultra sound that I have gallstones in the neck of my gallbladder . I felt like crap ever since they went fishing around doing these test. I had a attach of some sort the other day while eating dinner ( baked pork & carrots ) horrible chest pain, back pain between shoulders , hot flashes, nausea, dry heeves felt like something was stuck. Horrible pain! Went to ED, they gave me a GI cocktail and zofran. With in 10 min. I felt much better. Called the gastro doc next day & they switched me to nexium. I still have mild pain on left side of chest when I take deep breaths. And after I eat. Most psin is on left side of chest, right under sternum, and left side of stomach / abdomen . I am worried that my surgeon will say no to the sleeve due to this new issue. Anyone have issues like this before or after the surgery? So frustrated & I am so close to the finish line that I'm afraid of everything going wrong at this point. :/
  14. Congrats on your surgery. Whoo hoo! Only eating a couple of spoonfuls (about 1/4 cup) is very normal at this stage. Are you eating slowly (taking 10 - 20 minutes)? I used to eat from a teaspoon or a small toddler sized fork & almost just dipped them in my food - never a full spoonful. The pain sounds like your restriction. It’s a signal you’ve had enough. Mine also kicks in when I eat too quickly. But as with all things that seem odd or cause you pain speak to your medical team. There’s a lot of swelling after surgery at the top of your tummy but it shouldn’t still be causing you issues this far out. I struggled to swallow anything for a few days after surgery. Carried a sick bag for days cause I was constantly spitting up salvia. Not pleasant. You could also be holding some tension in your body because you’re sub consciously fearing you’ll have pain/discomfort when you swallowing as you did after surgery. The tension then causes the pain like a self fulfilling prophecy. Just a thought but again talk to your medical team. Generally, your tummy is pretty sensitive & cantankerous in the beginning & you may find a lot of foods don’t sit well. Food you can eat one day makes you ill the next. It does take a bit of trial & error to work out what food keeps your tummy happy in the beginning. This does all settle & you’ll find you’ll be able to eat most things in time. Personally, I still find potatoes too heavy to eat - they sit like a lump in my tummy. Multi vitamins would make me nauseous every morning. Vomited a couple of times too. I split the dose - one in the morning, one at night & always after food. Good luck.
  15. Both the 9.75 and 10 cm bands hold 4cc. The Vanguard (AKA VG or 11cm Band) holds 12 or so cc's so you have one of the other ones.
  16. Had the gastric sleeve on May 10. I can hold way more food than what I was told I could and it has me scared I'm gonna bust my seams. I think I jumped ahead to eating soft foods so I'm going to stop and go back to puréed for another week. I'm losing but I'm so afraid of causing a leak it's making me stress out about it.. Any help out there?

    tummy tuck+?

Hi All, Just Sharing. I had my first appointment with the plastic surgeon concerning my belly. I am running 3 miles a day X 5 days a week. I battle a chronic rash. I actually thought it was all cleared up only to find it is still there. I guess it makes sense that I wouldn't know since I've had 3 C-sections and have no feeling around the scar area. All the more reason to loose the skin! Anyway, about 10 days till I find out yes or no. Now it is the waiting game. Planning on a bladder sling at the same time. Since loosing all this weight I can't sneeze without peeing! Hope this isn't tmi! Fingers crossed!

    1 cup of Food Rule

You bring up some good questions. I haven't heard about the 1 cup rule. The rule my nutritionist has is 10-15 minutes from when you start to eat and when you finish and put your fork down between bites and wait 30 seconds before you pick your fork back up. As for liquids, 30 -60 minutes after eating. Try to do 20 ozs between breakfast and lunch and 20 ozs between lunch and dinner and 20 0zs after dinner (but not too close to bed time. I'm struggling with the 60 ozs myself. But after talking to the nutritionist, I have made sure I get 40 ozs in by dinner and then whatever I drink after dinner is what I do and not worry so much about it.

    fear of vomiting

I was banded on Aug 25, 2010. I have not yet vomitted once. I have gotten stuck about 4 times, but remained calm. When and if you do get stuck the first thing you need to do is NOT panic. I have learned a lot from this forum and two of those things were that if you get stuck, DONT DRINK ANYTHING to try and get it to go down (this will just make you want to throw up worse)stand up and flap your left arm like a chicken (yes I did just say that) it has worked every time I have gotten stuck. The other one I heard was to keep papaya enzyme chewables at your reach at all times (purse, desk, home, car). It is a digestive aid. I got stuck last night and I just stood up kind of walking around my house breathing, flapping, took two enzyme pills and after about 10 min it all went down. The reason I got stuck was because I was eating too fast, didnt cut it small enough and did not chew long enough. You do need to pay attention. I refuse to throw up and I have not done it once yet. Not everyone throws up and it is not going to make you a belemic if you get this surgery. You just need to pay attention to what and how you are eating and you wont get stuck and you wont throw up!

    Throwing up

I was sleeved 10/29 i go to the doctor on the 29th
  23. been a while since I've posted.... last I was around, I was preparing to have gall bladder removed...turns out that wasn't the problem... no gastro problems of recent... I am 16 months post op... got to normal BMI at 10 months... am now actually under my goal... wear size 4...21 BMI...25% BF was APPROVED for panniculectomy on first submission to AETNA and was supposed to have that surgery 2 weeks ago however, GYN issue became emergent and I ended up with hysterectomy that day instead... approval good for 6 months so hopefully I will get it in the Spring... Dr says I can get it as soon as 6 weeks post-hysterectomy however I am only 2 weeks out and in a LOT of pain still so that's definitely not happening...besides I need to go back to work for about 2 or 3 months to build up some FMLA time. I have always followed my own eating/exercise path post-VSG...glad to say its still working... I eat plenty of carbs, always start with Protein...plenty of Water.... take my vits & Probiotics.... I haven't really exercised in nearly 2 months and I maintained weight during that time, even managed to get down another 3 or 4 pounds....Plastic Surgeon says for me to expect another 5 pound loss once my extra skin is removed.... I cannot believe at that point I will be struggling NOT to lose weight... MIND BLOWING!!

    Ready, Set, Go!

I started last week trying to elimanate caffeine from my diet and adding the 64 oz of Water that I will be required to get in after surgery. I have had a caffeine headache almost everyday. (I'm addicted to caramel frappes and NOS energy drinks) I have one week without them now and I do still get a headache at times but not as bad now. I really could use one right this minute though, this is always in my head. It doesn't help that my hubby loves them too! lol I have been taste testing Protein shakes and have one now in place of b'fast now. I really do like the chocolate Ensure High Protein Shakes. I too am still worried about nothing but liquids for the next month! 10 day liquid diet, then 3 days of clears, then 2 weeks of full liquids post op......scarry!
  25. I had my second fill on Oct 17 and by fri when I had real food, i have a lot of restrictions I have already almost vomoted three times as I don't feel full and keep eating then wel it feels like it's al going to come back up. I know this is what I wanted (to be able to only eat alittle not to throw up or gag) but when I first experiencied it I was sad. On sat was out with frinds and they wanted pizza . I figure I will eat ½ a slice enjoy it and be ok. Well no I had breakfast about 3 hours before and apparently it had not digested yet. I took one tiny bite and is was ok , I took a second and felt like I was going to throw up on the table on my friends So I stop eating and wait for it to pass… apparently you could see my discomfort as my friends keep askinging are you ok Now the last thing I want to do is talk while trying not to throw up. I finially manage to say Im fine just went dwn the wrong side…my friends response was to get me a glass of water…which I can't drink … I pretend to and it does finally pass So now I am sitting looking a almost a whole slice and I don't want it at all I kind of pull it apart , pretend to eat some and push most of it under my napkin I felt sad that I could not eat with my friends but at the same time happy that I wasn't hungry Noone there knew about my band so I couldn't say anything …this is the hard part about hiding the band I still am not going to tell anyone else (other than doc only 2 friends know) I spoke to the office this morning and they say it's normal I ate too much too fast They recommend going back to liquids for a day then mushies for at least a day before I try real food again. if not come back and they will take some water out but at 5 ½ cc in a 10 cc band I should not be that tight On the bright side I am not hungry at all I knew this would be hard but mostly concentrated on the mental part And the not eating things I love but know are bad for me not my body's response to all this . I know it will get better in time but it is harder than I thought
