  1. Come to think of it ’m the same!! The last photo of me looking ‘normal’ was the end of Feb was and wearing 33” Jeans. was I don’t know what my weight was before but it must of been around 14-14.5 stone as all my clothes fit (size 33” men’s waist) but now none of my jeans fit and must be about a size 36” waist. Before I never really set to a strict diet, in fact I don’t know how I didn’t put in weight! My housemate is a couple of years younger and eats more than me but he must have a look at higher metabolism as he eats worse and more than Me yet stays around 31”/32” waist and about 12 stone. Does anyone have any ideas as what’s wrong with me and what to do? I read about the pouch reset to shrink the stomach and kick start the metabolism again? Im eating relatively well at the moment also, yesterday breakfast was 3 eggs with 1.5 pieces of sliced toast and butter, some grapes and followed by supper consisting of the follow (rough measurements based off visual inspection of 125g of Halloumi • Grilled Halloumi (125g) • Chop Ham Chunks (100g) • Mixed Salad (Filled base of bowel) • Sweet Chilli Sauce (30ml) The rest the Day I had Tea and nibbles on grapes. Zero exercise apart from walking the dogs (same as before) I never really exercised much apart from the daily dog walk and my weight still hung around 14/14.5 stone. Before the weight gain I would eat loads of rubbish and just slightly less than the average adult at meals but would make up for it in snacks etc. i really don’t know what’s going on It’s like my body just uses all the food as don’t often need to go to the toilet like I used to. Not sure if it’s because I’m eating less post weight gain?!

Say Good Bye To The Girls :(

In regards to that, if you were large on top before you gained all the weight, will you still have them after the weight loss? As a teenager I was a 36 C and weighed 115 to 118 pounds but for over a decade now I have been overweight. Ok, not overweight but morbidly obese. I suspect a major part of the reason for the weight gain is hypothyroidism that went undiagnosed for several years because before that I was a healthy active teenager who loved being around people and doing things. Then one day I couldn't get out of bed and stopped having an appetite yet I was gaining weight fairly quickly. I had no idea what hypothyroidism was back then either. Anyways, I am now a 52 DDD but if I went down to a 36 C I would be more than happy with that.

    What is happening?

I usually asked to replace the 7oz for a 5oz and the vegetables for Mashed potatoes, since veggies are not friends of my band. I ask also for the Sauce to help food go down. I bet what happened to you was because of the veggies. Use a juicer to get your veggies in. The weight gain is gases ... I can easily get 5 pounds and loose it in hours because I get so bloated that I guess i retain liquids. I didn't start enjoying my green zone until I relaxed about what I ate and when I stop counting, for me counting calories and ozs was a trigger to my anxiety then I ate more.
  4. Hello! I have my final meeting with my nutritionist on January 19 and then meet with my surgeon again on January 20. Unfortunately I have recently gained about ten pounds. It happened very quickly, during the last month. Part of this was due to overeating at the Holidays and part of it is because I have been on prednisone for a pinched nerve. If I don't lose the weight, they will not go forward with the surgery. Starting today, I will do Protein shakes. Can I please have advice on how many a day, whether I should eat anything else at all, etc. Is my goal even feasible?
  5. I had the VSG in August of 2015 and began noticing more shedding when I washed and dried my hair that December, but it was minimal enough that I was the only one who noticed. It continued to shed a bit more than typical through February of 2016, and then abated. I lost far more hair in 2012 due to a John Frieda product (stay away from the Go Blonder spray!) that caused surreal damage, and in 2013 when the antidepressant I briefly took for grief caused weight gain and thinning right at the front of my head. Both times then my less diplomatic friends bluntly asked me why I was losing hair. When I lost hair after the VSG no one commented because it wasn't nearly as apparent. I am sensitive to Biotin so I never took it. The only Vitamins I was taking at the time were the Garden of Life Vitamin Code for women and Vitamin D. I now take Flinstones with Iron and have not lost any hair. I think the primary reason I lost little hair was that I was losing weight at a much slower pace than many others who've had the VSG. My BMI was low for the surgery (32), and it took me a full year to lose as much weight as some do in four months. I did eventually surpass my goal, though. To add - one change I did make was to stop washing my hair as frequently. I used to wash, dry, and style my hair every day, and that put extra strain on my hair. I wear a shower cap and just wash my hair every third day. I use a little dry shampoo from Lush to freshen it.

    Newbie needs advice, please

Welcome! On this site you'll find many differing opinions. As you can guess, most of us are pro-sleeve and couldn't be happier with our decision. In fact, there are many here who started with the band and then were revised to a sleeve. I am a low bmi sleever who was fortunate that I never battled weight until the past two years. I do have a very long family history of morbid obesity and comorbidities though so I knew that if I didn't eat right and hit the gym everyday they would come for me too. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 18 or so months ago and as my pain worsened my will power lessened and my drive to stay ahead on my workouts and nutrition took a nose dive. I slowly gained weight the first year. The next 6 months the pain became almost unbearable and I was put on a mix of meds that all had weight gain as side effects. Combined with my lack of mobility and my lack of heartfelt focus on anything but getting through the pain (I used food as a coping mechanism) I gained about 50 pounds in 6 months. My doctor took a radical approach and suggested WLS as a tool to keep me healthy. If I could get the weight off my fibro pain would likely subside a great deal now that we have found a med mix that works for me. Even though I had a relatively low BMI I was still obese and headed for danger (high BP, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, etc). Together we decided wls was the right move for me. After discussing the options we also decided that RNY was too extreme for my situation. The band also presented its own issues in that a foreign object may cause me to flare repeatedly. I also didn't like the idea of chasing the sweet spot and potentially having a visible port bump. That left the sleeve, which all around sounded like the best option anyway. One incision, no malabsorption, no adjustments, etc. Once we decided on the sleeve I was on the hunt for a surgeon and feel that I selected the best in TX. I know everyone says that and I'm glad they do. It's of the utmost importance that you have a GREAT relationship with your surgeon. I am a month post-op, have lost about 20 pounds, and more importantly am feeling about 70% less pain. I still have bad days here and there, but I think I might be able to go back to work full time pretty soon! You have no idea what a blessing that is. Prior to WLS my Dr was encouraging me to look into disability because even my part time contract position was often too much to bear.

    Need support

Most of us have had weight gain after goal. Getting back on track can be done. Believe in yourself. Time to clean out the house of crap food choices. Go grocery shopping for your weight loss phase food plan. For some, a reset gets them back into the weight loss mindset. For others it's too restrictive to go back to liquid soft food stage. You will get the same results going back to bariatric basic food stage. Whole foods that are more satisfying. Log and weigh your food. Hydrate Activity You have done this before you can do it again. It's finding the old discipline you had at the beginning of your surgery. The food holidays are here. Make a goal to get past them and ring in the new year at a lower weight. It's not easy to detox and get back to healthy habits. Its work. You will feel crappy for a few weeks. If you are consistent you will see results.
  8. Ahhhh. Hugs and more hugs to you! Reading your thoughts above, you have a very full plate right now and “Ideally, want to finish your studies and then get the surgery”. Repeatedly you express this wish. You deserve to complete your studies uninterrupted, so then you can devote more focus to your next life milestone, WLS. IMHO, I wholeheartedly agree on that strategy. I finished my master’s at age 40 while working full time and recall the dedication, focus and discipline required to keep it all rolling at a very high level. I also had L5, S1 microdiscectomy and laminectomy 18 months ago. To add in WLS and the preparation pre and post op would have stressed me to no end, and yours is a step more intense than mine, PhD and fusion. You’ve put so much into your journey already, and we’re talking a short time frame in the big scheme of things to finish your studies. I would focus on keeping your spirits up right now in knowing and believing it WILL all be accomplished within a very near term time frame. I do recall the horror of the weight gain with spinal surgery, but again, I would strive to eat as healthy as possible but don’t stress over it. Focus on the things you CAN control, finishing your studies without losing your ever lovin’ mind is right there at the top of the list. Throw off those chains of guilt that you’re not prioritizing your health! You ARE prioritizing it in being self loving and practical to not further overload. Breathe.... You got this girll!

Did you lose weight taking Lithium?

That is great! It is good when you find something that really works for you. I imagine you will continue to do well on it. I had my sleeve 15 months ago and my bipolar meds really didn't seem to interfere with weight loss at all. Funny, because when I first started the bipolar meds about 10 years ago, the weight gain went way up!

Did you lose weight taking Lithium?

I was on Seroquel for several months. Lots of weight gain. However, I switched over to other meds way before WLS, so I can't answer as to how my life on Seroquel after WLS would be. I can say though, that I have lost over 150 pounds in 16 months, and I take bipolar meds.

    Stalls - How many

Like others, it depends on how you define "stall". Every month from the start I went 10 days to a couple of weeks without weight loss and then a big drop. I'm still doing that. I don't see it as a stall. My body is just adjusting. For example, if I drank a lot more water the day before or I had more pickles (salt aka water retention). I love tracking my food too so as long as my calories were low, I know it is just a matter of time. Even people who are bed ridden need over 1000 calories just to survive. For me, I think I would be far more anxious if I didn't track calories though. Seeing low calories day in and day out gives me comfort so I don't have to worry. It's very calming. Excessive worrying just causes cortisol spikes and weight gain. Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

Thank you! Not far enough along to tell our friends yet, so it feels nice being able to tell all you sleevers here and know someone understands how I feel about the weight gain.

What Type Of Birth Control Do You Use?

I use the depo shot. I love it. Go in every 3 months, for 15 mins and you are done. I haven't noticed any weight gain and I don't get periods anymore. I would recommend it but check with your Dr.

    HELP!!! Im not losing...

Shamrock... PCOS stands for Poly sistic ovarian syndrome. Us who have it do not have a normal matabolism. Our bodies are insulin resistent. It is nothing that you can develop after surgery. Its just a "disease" that a lot of women have that causes weight gain, skin tags, certain discoloartion of the skin, and some even have extra testostresomes or how ever you spell it, lol which can cause hair to grow in weird areas, like the face. Also your period could be irregular. But i was diagnosed awhile ago and tried taking met formin for mine, but it made me very sick to my stomach so i stopped. My doctor says my PCOS is the reason for most of my weight gain. But who knows.....

    One year bandiversary

So happy for you hope I reach such success and no weight gain in a year now that is sensational good luck
  16. Thank you everyone! I don’t want to blame quarantine, but that is the time frame of my weight gain! I love the idea of dancing around (I play “Just Dance” with my stepson)! I appreciate the words of encouragement! I’m so proud of where I am, but I have that creeping fear of going back. So while 7 lbs isn’t a lot, I certainly want my clothing to fit better 😝 I just got off my elliptical; a step in the right direction

    Its muscle not fat right?

All you need to do is look in the mirror and be honest. You'll know if the weight gain is mostly muscle or fat. As far as what you told your doc, what you REALLY meant was that you would not gain back any fat. The number on the scale isn't very important. He can look at you or check your body fat % (not BMI) and know what happened. As far as your 20 lbs+ go, based on your lifting advances I would guess maybe at most 10lbs of muscle, plus some Water weight if you're better hydrated now and maybe a bit of fat.
  18. Have you thought of revision to VSG or another surgery? Unfortunately without restriction, it'll be very difficult for you.I know because I was one of the unlucky ones that if there is an extreme side effect with a WLS, I would fall in that category... Lapband (erosion) and VSG (severe gerd, esophagitis). Surgeons have stressed that it was no fault of my own. It just happens. I finally had a revision to RNY and feel so much better. Tracking food helped me before my revisions. While I had some weight gain, it wasn't too much. Looking at the list of food in my food diary always helps me realize it is head hunger vs real hunger. Revision sleeve to bypass

Anxious to hear how Old Profile's surgery went. I am meeting with my surgeon next week to discuss bypass revision surgery for fixing GERD, hiatal hernia, and had weight gain after sleeve. Best of luck to you!!

    Eat more calories, OK BS!

Texas u made me smile. I just spent 40 minutes blogging about this very thing. I am sure your weight gain is temporary, if you believe the literature you read, you can gain up to 2-3 lbs in water in any given day and than turn around a lose it. Honestly what you ate yesterday has not had time to turn to fat, I think that is why I stay away from the scales and just go by measurements, Muscle also weighs more than fat. Good luck and stick to what works for you not what others suggest we are all so different.

    Gaining weight after surgery

The nutritionist at my support group this evening spoke about calories from Protein and calories from carbs. He said that the weight gain comes because of what carbs do to our insulin and blood sugar. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but I know when I did Atkins, I was eating a ton of calories and I was still losing weight. Back then I could eat a huge steak which is all protein, but was probably 1,000 calories. I gained 8 lbs on my cruise and lost it in a week when I got home and went back to my regular eating habits. I sure do love my sleeve!
  23. Yep, had the full work up! All normal. My weight gain was probably 60% medical, annnnd 40% bad habits. I had HG while pregnant, resulting in being on TPN through an PICC line for 6months. I then had to do food therapy to reintroduce solid foods, and put on weight RAPIDLY. The past 30lbs though, that was all me only making time for one large meal a day.

    BCBS Choice PPO of IL

The amount of requirements and perquisite's for insurance to cover can be C R A Z Y no matter what state or insurance company you have. I live and work in IL and I have Healthlink PPO. My insurance had no real perquisites per se other than I had to go to 2 seminars for the program. Now I cannot speak for everyone's journey but my own and this is what I came across. Although my insurance had no real requirements to be met, the Dr I chose sure did!! I started my first workshop on Oct 28, 21. Since I already knew my health insurance had little to know requirements I had it set in my head that the week after Christmas Id be scheduled for surgery WRONG lol. I met a nurse practitioner at my Drs office that was like hitting a brick wall LOL. She is awesome dont get me wrong but she set me straight real quick. Depending on the Dr there are loads of tests and other Drs you have to be cleared by first. I mistakenly thought it was my insurance that required alot of this and I couldnt understand why by Feb I still had not been cleared for surgery. This nurse politely informed me that my insurance is not the one that determines the surgery clearance but the DR, they are however the source of payment so a major point to but in my program I had to show I had no weight gain in 6 months/ April was my 6th month since the start. Once I weighed in and still had no weight gain they then sent for insurance approval and like Future Sleeve Diva above, I had approval very quickly and surgery was scheduled within days of that. It can be a long process for some but it will happen in due time. It can be frustrating to have to wait but it will come and when it does then you may start asking yourself if your ready for it lol. PS....I have not had any out of pocket yet except the initial consultation with the Dr ($35) I believe I had 1 other office visit charge of $35 but so far thats all
  25. Well I came to this blog and start this journey speaking honestly. I have used Alli for the past 3 years. I spoke to my nutritionist and she said I could still use it with the band. I don't see a problem with it unless it is used as an excuse to overeat. It deters overeating of fat. It only handles about 50% of 12 grams eaten at a meal. If you overeat fat you will suffer. One reason I like using it is that I am regular and never constipated. Obviously it hasn't helped to loose weight or I wouldn't be getting banded but I have maintained my weight for about 1 year without weight gain. Most of my weight re-gain had been right after breast cancer when I felt so out of control of my life..............Well there it is the truth.
