I was banded June 7, 2010. I have lost 119 pounds...I maintained weight during this past winter for 6 months...then decided to get one more slight fill in April...lost 9 lbs so far from fill. I am hoping to lose 11 more by June 21...as I am having plastics done on that day!! Don't see it happening, but that will be okay! I am very happy with my band and progress...now to get rid of my wrinkly skin!! lol Good luck to your last 25

    No Longer Losing...help, Ideas?

I either reduced or increased my calories by a 100 and upped the exercise, several days a week might need increasing to 5 to 7 days, or at least change the routine include more strength training building muscle will eventually help burn those extra calories .. Nearly everyone experiences some form of a plateau in their weight loss, sometimes its a few weeks or can be several months, as u get lighter and lose more weight most of us had to step it all up execise wise and eat less to make the weight come off again .. good luck ! Sometimes just a plain old pig out day can shock your body into behaving its self if all else fails u can try that and enjoy it !
  5. I'm at 10cc in a 14cc band, and I'm travelling to Peru for two weeks in October. I'll be taking part in some ceremonies with traditional healing plants, which are known to sometimes induce vomiting. Knowing that vomiting could be an issue with the band, I asked my doctor about this. Much to my surprise, he recommended that I get a partial (as in "most") unfill before my trip, and refill afterward. As he put it, you don't want to be out in the jungles of Peru, having a problem with the band. I have some real misgivngs about this idea. In talking with the guides leading my planned trip, the vomiting reaction is not really common (they've had only one person vomit, and he'd worked himself up ahead of time to the point that he was overanxious and probably brought it on himself). Naturally, I also worry about regaining weight during the trip. Finally, if I do get a "big" unfill before the trip, can it all be replaced afterward, or would I have to work up a little at a time, just as I did to get to my 10cc? Has anyone else here been temporarily unfilled for travel purposes? Has anyone not had an unfill prior to travel, and wish they had? Thoughts? Experiences?

    Adding Muscle After Banding?

This is really a tough one. To gain lean muscle tissue you need to theoretically be in a calorie surplus - but to lose fat you need to be in a calorie deficit. My primary exercise was cardio for fat loss (with minimal strength) but now I'm very focused on my strength training (and less cardio). I am consistently able to increase weight so at least the muscle I have is becoming more efficient. The scale and my body fat measurement are continuing a very slow downward trend. I try to stay well hydrated and get plenty of rest. I'm happy with my recovery between workouts. I still have very significant restriction which I'm hesitant to give up - but I know it will eventually be necessary if I expect to have any meaningful muscle gain. I try to never go longer than 3 hours without a complete Protein source. I also cycle my calorie intake. On the lightest days I may end around 1000-1200 calories (rare) and on the heaviest days I may end at 3000+. Heavy days require me to eat steadily throughout the day. The band, at this point, is basically a tool to keep me from binging. I guess I'm basically in a slow long-term cutting phase. Once I achieve a decent body fat % with the muscle I have I will probably have a partial unfill and try a controlled bulking phase - because I'm just about to (if not already at) the point where the band is holding me back. Good luck!

    Adding Muscle After Banding?

Hi, know you posted this awhile ago but wanted to comment. I am still about 25/lbs from my goal but have been working out for about 18 months with a trainer etc. Still have issues with the scale and Christmas new years were not good! Lots of mindless eating! Started back on my food plan and had my body % done. Although I gained over the holidays from November untill the other day I gained 9 / lbs of muscle mass. So althought the scale is up about 2/lbs since the last time my fat % were done my fat is 9 lbs less. So yes working out will help. I eat about 1500 calories a day and 150 grams of protien. To do so you have to use protien powder thier is no way I could eat that much and keep my calories within reason. Hope this helps. Ross
  8. Well today I am 4 months out and down 90 pounds. I never have felt better in my life. I went shopping for new shirts yesterday and I bought X-large. I have cant believe it. It is like a dream. It was the best decision I have ever made. The only thing my sleeve does not like is red meat. I have tried twice and it just does not work. I take things slow when eating. The only thing that bothers me is the top half my body is one size and my bottom is another story. I have always been bottom heavy. I have the mind set I did not gain it over night so I will not lose it over nite. I am attaching before and after pictures. Have a great labor day weekend.

    Jillian Michaels' 30 day shred

Has anyone done the 30 day shred? This is not for the faint. The program is like working with a personal trainer...seriously. Jillian is no joke. But there have been a lot of good reviews/results with her program. just do a google search for reviews and you'll see. I am guessing it is not against board rules to post other websites since we reference weight watchers on this board so...do a search on Amazon and my fitness pal community and you'll see some amazing results. Anyway, I am only on day two but am siked! BTW, this is not for the beginner. I have heard some say they do it in conjunction with Couch to 5k and other running/walking/exercises.
  10. I find Atkins bars and Shaklee Protein bars very helpful for business travel. They are low-carb, low-fat and low-calorie. They are full of Fiber. They keep blood sugar stable and control cravings. I use them during long flights of eight hours or more. Of course, I prefer real food, but with business travel, it is not always convenient. Downside of protein bars: flatulence. But they do control my hunger. I commute every other week between Europe and the US for work (one of the reasons I gained weight). Protein Bars have truly helped. I also know exactly the amount of my sodium intake. I cannot advocate protein bars for everyday use over real food. But I consider them superior to high-fat, high-sugar, high-carb processed food when on the road. For Breakfast in hotel buffets: I eat boiled eggs, smoked salmon and cheese.
  11. Anybody else eating more and losing more? Once I broke the 1,000 a day the weight started to come off. I was nervous at first because I thought I was going to plateau but I knew -and my hair loss knew-that I needed more protein. Is this common with anyone else?

Need advice from long term bandsters

see? i think the band is exactly what you put into it. i havent gained back anything and its been 2 1/2 years for me. i walk every single day. i do not work myself to death..sometimes i walk miles..sometimes, just to the bank. i eat small amounts but never was too hard on myself with carbs because i know when i get hard on myself, i overeat. i have noticed now that i do not eat anywhere NEAR as much as other people now and my ideas of food have totally changed..i see other people eating large amounts of food and i feel a huge innate sadness for them. or, i see someone super heavy and i want to tell them all that i have learned...but i still have never reached "my goal" and that is completely my fault. i need to eat more Protein and less sugar and thats why i am back here after being banded for 2 1/2 years (successfully!!!) weight is a lifelong thing and every day it is about choice and how those choices work in your life....it is a great thing for a lot of people and i believe we can stay free of the that nagging overeater voice in our heads forever with the band.....i am just "too happy" and really have no will to be ultra thin! what i need to teach myself now is that i deserve to be truly thin..and not just thin "to me"..... hahahahahah im here though!!! and THAT is what matters!

    Gall Bladder

Want you to know that I am wishing you the best. I have gone through something similar pain wise only in my case, it was due to me pulling muscles in my body from the way I have needed to use more muscles on one side of my body due to my severe osteo arthritis. But I had no idea what it was to begin with and I ended up in the ER one night because the pain was so severe that I was just screaming for them to help me. They ran so many tests on me, including testing for gall bladder problems and it ended up that it was a severe muscle pull. I hope that however it ends up for you, that you get some relief from that pain, I feel for you. Oh and interestingly, I have an area in my left side where it looks like my stomach is slightly ballooned out. After all the tests were done and came back normal, the consensus was that it is likely fat deposits in there shifting around with the weight loss.
  15. I struggled with that too. But then I thought while I'm trying to lose the weight again I can get diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. The benefits are pretty immediate. My blood pressure is really good now. I had cold feet but on the day of surgery I was sure it was the choice for me. Only you can make the choice but just think about why you gain weight and why you can't keep it off. Those answers will help you decide whether you should go through with the surgery.
  16. I must say, I am so happy to enter the new year 73 pounds lighter than I did last year! I was sleeved on 9/23 and am feeling great. I am wearing jeans again!! How much weight have you all lost this year? Keep up the good work and Happy New Year, New You ????
  17. the scle is not budging 1 ounce, but I'm happy 26 lbs down. Thats 10% of my starting weight! I'm in bandster hell, but thats ok.... I was mentally prepared to be there. I'm eating and drinking Water and not worring too much. And very thankfully, I lost from my tummy first! Surprised me considering I'm very apple shaped.
  18. I am 16 months post op on 11/23. I have lost 60 pounds and have recently started working 2 full time jobs and unfortunately gained 4.5 pounds. I realized this and have decided to follow the pre-op and post-op diet to a T just to get myself back on track. Today is day 2 of liquids. I had a 5 day liquid diet before surgery and then 1 week liquids, 1 week mushies, 1 week soft and then the 4th week slowly introduced solid protein and veggies back in to my diet. Thanksgiving I will allow some solid foods but only for that day and only 1 meal. The liquid diet is definitely an eye opener to how reliant I am still on food. I am in this for success and will make it there. I have about 44-49 pounds I would like to lose. I am 194 right now and a size 14/L. I started out at 250ish and was in a size 20-22 and a 2xl shirt. I just stared getting really comfortable with my size and realized I need to lose even more to be healthy. I am not in this to get "skinny", I am in this to be healthy. I will get there. Down 1.5 pounds in 2 days. Wish me luck!!!

    Not feeling it!

Hi...I am from WI also. What town are you from. I live in Cambridge. I noticed you said you drank with your meal? Was that a mistake in typing? You shouldn't drink an hour before a meal or 2 hours after. That is the info I got from my doctor. Who did your surgery? Your bad habits will not disappear with the band or make you exercise, that is going to be up to you. Once you get your first fill you should feel some restriction. Make sure you are totally honest with your doctor, that is the only way that he can help you figure out how things are working for you. Do they offer a support group? My surgeon offers monthly meetings that really are a great source of support and offers alot of ideas and solutions to some problems we come across. I do feel for you because I still don't feel the restriction that most feel and have NEVER reached the "sweet spot" that everyone talks about. I am 2 yrs out and have still not reached goal. But I am also not going up on the scale which was the norm 2 years ago. Remember slow and steady is okay also. I at first had a hard time with that after seeing people who were banded the same day as I was and were losing very fast. My one perk to slow weight loss is I have NO hanging skin anywhere. Exercise is definately the key. I should stop now, but I feel like I could offer alot more advise. Since we are in the same state if you ever want to talk, even on the phone just send me a personal IM with your phone number and I would be glad to give you a call for support, advise, or if you just need to vent! Good Luck on your journey and I will be here if you need anything

    Gluten free

I too have Celiac. I really like the Think Thin Protein bars. There are some delicious and soft ones at GNC too. (Think Thin is an organic product. I got hooked on them at my local health food store, but I recently found them in the health food section of my grocery store too.) I am not sleeved yet, but plan to eat all the recommended foods. Obviously it is necessary to stay away from those ultra-processed, ultra high carb foods that are out there now--no breads, crackers, cereals, pretzels, etc. How can we not lose weight when we break free from those? cottage cheese, yogurt, string cheese, low-fat Cabot cheddar, apple sauce, Protein shakes, and eventually protein bars and nuts will be some of my snack choices

    Band Jargon...teach me!

Basically these group names are for the month you get banded. Since I'm getting banded in February there is a group (go to home, and towards the very bottom it has like support groups with month and year).. Whichever month you get banded you go to that month group and everybody gives suggestions for a name for that group and then you vote on the name. I voted for Fab-U-Less Febs, but that name didn't get picked.. urrggg, oh well.. anyway.. it's usually a name that is sort of uplifting and tied in with your month and losing weight.. that group of people sort of becomes like a family to you or a big support group. Now, there are folks who don't join their "banded month" group and that's fine too. We all support each other (mostly).
  23. Okay. I'm reading through this site as much as I can every day. (I'm way pre-op--first appt in mid-Aug.) A couple of things have started bugging me, so I thought I'd ask the experts (namely, all of you!). 1. I see the there is a WIDE variance in what surgeons and insurance companies ask you to do pre-op. Which tests, what diet, how long, etc. So here's my question: is it possible to lose so much weight running through the pre-op hoops that the insurance company, which initially looked hopeful, now says, "Whoa, we think you can lose and maintain the your weight yourself?" I mean, is this pre-op diet ever a real hurdle to surgery down the pike? 2. What if you don't have the "standard" morbidities? Like, suppose someone had a life-threatening anaphylactic allergy to dust mites that is compounded by heavy weight? Or, suppose someone has had brain surgery for an aneurysm and was told that high blood pressure doesn't help in the possible recurrence of another aneurysm? I'm just sayin'..... What if it's other stuff? Does this, so to speak, weigh in with the insurance companies? 3. One of the things that really strikes me in this is that a) we're all pretty much powerless over food; we (at least I) hate being powerless; c) we decide on surgery (which is, like, a totally pro-active, life-affirming thing to do), and then, boom! d) the insurance company makes us, well, powerless again. Is anybody else really, really ticked off about this? I should add that I haven't actually experienced any of the above--okay, I've experienced #2. But I'm asking because I am trying to get a healthy mindset for my appointment in August. I really want this whole process to be one of dialogue and decision--not too much edict. Are people--surgeons and insurance--generally willing to work with you? I'd really appreciate your thoughts and insight on these. Thanks in advance. DeterminedGirl
  24. There is no way I could possibly even begin to explain how important protein is in your body. Protein is used In every cell in your body. You need protein for protein synthesis and DNA replication. The body's primary building block for muscle, bone, skin, hair, and many other tissues is protein. There are over 10,000 different proteins that are found and needed in the body for maintaining life. After water has been excluded 75 percent of your body weight consists of protein. Crazy huh?! Proteins play many important roles in the body including the structure of enzymes; these are important proteins that help reactions occur in the body, such as releasing from the food we eat. Proteins also function as transport proteins such as hemoglobin; an iron containing protein that transports oxygen to exercising muscles via the bloodstream. Protein consist of amino acids. Amino acids are extremely important . There are twenty different amino acids of which eight are considered essential because they cannot be generated by the body but are necessary for survival. The body uses amino acids circulating in the blood stream, released from the breakdown of tissues, or consumed in the diet to make protein. It's incredible just how important protein is in our bodies not just for building muscle. Eat/ drink your protein whatever just get some I've been studying protien in college for years. Every one of my mastering courses that involves the human body has a section on the importance of protien. Ok, that's enough class for today!!! Class dismissed!
