    Need Help

Jen, terrific advice!!!! I want to compliment the poster on 2 years of maintenance....that is awesome!!!! And by knowing what you have done day in day out for 2 years you can discover where to cut back on calories and where you can pick up the exercise without having an overwhelming lifestyle makeover. There is a rule of thumb that says 100 calories per pound of wt for maintenance or loss so if you want to weigh 130 you could probably eat 1200-1300 cals. That should give you 1-2 pounds of loss a week, boosted by whatever exercise calorie expenditure you do. A nice way to get started exercising is to treat yourself to a few weeks with a personal trainer. I wish you all the best. Mimi
  2. I was banded five weeks ago and have not had any issues until now. This morning I woke up and felt like I had the symptoms of low blood sugar. I didn't start to feel better until I drank my protein shake. Even after that I felt crappy all day. I think I had a bit of a panic attack as well which did not help anything. I am not diabetic and never had this issue before. Has this happened to anyone else? As always, I welcome everyone's comments. Thanks.

    Laying on my stomach

I went back to my massage therapist after two weeks. She had me lay on my side until six weeks out. She treats us the sane as pregnant women.

    Getting unfilled

Lawbebe~ It depends. I was soooo tight over Thanksgiving and Christmas. I literally PB'd through Christmas infront of my MIL. I went to the doctor and had .4 cc's out. For me, that worked. I will need a slight fill in a few weeks, but this has been good restriction. There is no "magic formula"...just what is right for individuals. Enjoy the unfill. I know Terridoodle had 1cc taken out and was soooo happy with that.

    Getting unfilled

if you have been tight for two weeks we usually take all the band fluid out and let you rest for a week to make sure you have not developed any pressure ulcers and or esophagitis, give you oral antacid pills then under fluro re fill to comfort.
  6. Hi y'all. Found this site while enjoying my "lunch" break at work. Had a choice between the band and roux and y and have elected to go with the band....still awaiting insurance authorization although my MD (Quilici) office tells me it will take 2-3 weeks for surgery authorization. :scared: This is a great site I will come back!

it has been a long time coming

after a few months of successful weightloss, i started letting old habits come back. they have built up and now i have to start all over again. i guess i will work on one thing a week and build each time so that i can be better. i never thought that the lap-band was a miracle, i knew that it would take some work, and i need to be positive and continue working the programs. need to: not drink liquids with my meals eat only 3 meals a day limit sweets to once a week need more protein, yes, drink the nasty drinks EXERCISE!

    Still Waiting

Thank you for your posts. I think that creatinglee answered carolyn24seven's question about why Kaiser makes us lose 10% of our weight before they will schedule the surgery. It's tough, but it'll all be worth it in the long run. I was a sugar addict but I've been off the sugar for a few weeks now, so I won't go thru withdrawals after surgery. I AM also learning patience (I think)! Good luck creatinglee. Fremont is a little different. I had my pschyc appt last week and as soon as I've lost my last 5 lbs or so, I just call the surgery scheduler, she then sends my chart to my surgeon and then they call me with the surgery date. That's it. No caseworker involved. Strange, isn't it, that it's the same company (Kaiser No. Cal.) but they work in different ways from one location to the next. Keep my posted, please. I'll do the same.:001_tongue:

    I want it

So... I've been lurking on this website for atleast an hour a day for the past three weeks. Now that things are getting rough and my life is changing I think it's finally time to come out of the dark and introduce myself so I can get the support and encouragment that made me fall in love with this site. I'm 19 and a sophmore at The University of Maryland, College Park. I'm 5'6" and 303 lbs. yuck. I've struggled with my weight ever since I can remember and have always been the biggest out of all of my friends. I've excused it for the past 5 years because I've been an athlete (Soccer, track, and rugby, and weight lifting) however, In february I broke my lovely athletic foot and gained 40 pounds!! This has really tipped me over the edge. As far as where I am on my journey, I have my first apt. with my surgeon on wednesday of next week!! However, the main inspiration for this post is the fact that my mom is in this journey with me and has her own list of things I need to do before she gives me the go ahead and quite honestly. I have been screwing up big time! I think the fact that I am such a "dont wash a car before you take it to the car wash" type of girl, now that I know this surgery is in my future its like I'm eating worse than ever :juggle: and my mom is no joke. she WILL not let me get the surgery if I dont prove to her I can do this. I told myself I wouldn't post until I had my surgery date but... I think GETTING to surgery is the half of it! and if I want to make this real to me. real to my mom. MY REALITY I've got to start seeking support and doing this. I have no boyfriend, hubby, life partner, not even a booty call (or a worthy one i should say) : I WANT THAT I dont have that college girl swagger : I WANT THAT I dont have kids : I WANT THAT I... want to start making memories, i want to live like I've never lived, I want....to be healthy: I WANT THIS so ... thats it. thats all I got, I'm just here to meet some people at the same point I am on this journey, to get some encouragment from people ahead of me, and to learn about what my new life WILL be like. GET AT ME
  13. Hi fellow Bandsters! Thought i would join the site to share my experience. Im from Edmonton Alberta Canada, and have always been the fat kid. When I was 14 I weighed 245lbs and worked my way up to 265lbs by the time I was 17. I joined Weight Watchers and hit 210lbs by the time High school was over. Over the next ten years it was a roller coaster! When I went to college at 25 I got a little silly with the drinkin and by the time i graduated i was back up to 270lbs (have to admit it was alot of fun!).By the time I was 30 I hit the 300lbs mark. I keep tryin diets like Jenny Craig and am succefull, but i seem to drop 20 then a few months later gain 30.I now have a job in Sales, which i get paid to take customers out for food and drink. Im now 34 years old and have hit 349lbs! Im not even the same person anymore and I really miss the old me! I loved to socalize and travel the world (Australia, Cambodia, US, ect...). I never had a problem meeting women and could fit in with any group in a short amount of time. Now I just want to curl up in a dark cave and see no one!I could really care less if I wake up in the morning anymore. I had to turn the mirror around in my room so I dont have to disgust myself anymore. I cant live like this any longer! I have researched many options but found that the Lapband will work best for me. Im one of those people that never eat breakfast but will eat a truck when dinner comes around. I need this tool to help me with portion size more than anything. Unfortunately our Alberta Health Care system is a joke. Due to the fact that i am healthy as can be (aside the weight)it will take 2-3 years before i can have the surgery here in Edmonton. I have decided to go to Mexico to see Dr.Horacio Guajardo (worked for many years with Dr.Rumbaut) in Monterrey Mexico on July 14th 2009. He has personally called me to asure everything. Lisa and Brigitte (the Canadain and US patient relations) have been very no extremely helpfull. I have spent over 4hrs on the phone talking with Lisa for the past several weeks goin over every little detail. Sorry for the novel here, but i cant wait to start my journey here is 2 days! Look forward to all of your information. Cheers Kevw
  14. I was banded in December of 2008 and have lost 77 lbs. I am 1/2 lb from a healthy BMI, my original goal (I think I will try and go lower). I did have a fill approximately a month ago and am feeling like it is a sweet spot as I have lost about 5 lbs since. However, for the last week I am having a lot of pain on the left side of my port. My port does pooch out just below my rib cage, but I wasn't going to address that problem unitl I felt I was at my final weight. The pain feels like it is in the muscle almost like a stich in my side. Does anyone know what would be causing pain this far out from surgery? Do I need to get an unfill? Thanks
  15. Hello everyone! My name is Ashlee, and my surgery date is scheduled for June 15th. I had an amazing experience geting to this date, with no complications at all from my insurance provider. My doctor, Dr. Seger, and his team at BMI have helped me significantly through the process, and were so great to me. All I had to do was see the dietician once, do a barium swallow and have a psychiatric evaluation done to get my band date. It took a little while longer than expected because I missed my first psych eval appointment and had to reschedule it for two weeks later. Well, now I'm on the pre-op diet, and as everyone says it is, I'm having a difficult time. My stomach is alays growling, and I'm surrounded by a junk eating boyfriend and people at work bringing all their delicious snacks every day. It's like torture! I'm having trouble sticking to my meal plan, which is two protein shakes a day and a small meal of 3oz lean meat and a cup of vegetables. I know it's to shrink my liver, so I'm trying to stay on the band wagon as diligently as possible. Today, I had a new experience. While I cheated (I had a handful of potato chips a few hours after I woke up), those potato chips have held me over for about four hours now. It's crazy. I'm geting used to being hungry, which makes it more bearable. I've seen a lot of people who have had such great successes, but I've also seen a failure. I have a few concerns with the band myself, but I'm trying to remain confidant. I wants this to be a life changing experience, and something permanent. I hope I don't run into too many complications with the band, like slippage or erosion. A lot of people who starte a blog had a lot of success, and I'm sure it's because they're tracking their process and receiving helpful feedback. So, I'm going to attempt to do the same. I have a blog at Blogspot, and I hope some of you will read and either find something helpful or give me some helpful advice. More or less, if I can inspire anyone in their decision, I'll be happy too. My blog is located at: http://uiwleelee.blogspot.com/ Lol, there's my story so far. How are you guys doing today?

    FINALLY!

Next Wednesday I am meeting with my Dr. to sign my consent forms for the surgery! My patient advocate said that usually surgery is two or three weeks after a patient signs. So excited to start my new journey!!
  17. I can't believe what an emotional roller coaster this past week has been . I am really excited about the thought of taking control back , having better mobility , being healthier living the life I want but I have to be honest and say I am also really quite frightened about the operation . I've been a nightmare I am sure to live with this past few days irrational to say the least and tearful for no apparent reason - is this normal ? I have chosen to only tell a few people about my surgery until it's over as I don't want to feel judged or worse for my family to try and talk me out of having the op. I know it would be solely out of their concern for me whilst I'm under anisthetic but the long term health benefits completely out weigh the short term concerns for surgery in my mind . I'm just not sure if they would in theirs . Can someone please tell me if they also experienced such huge emotional mood swings ? Just want t make sure I'm normal ???? Allie
  18. I had sleeve gastrectomy March 2014 and have done great however I have a friend who had surgery 7 months ago with a different surgeon who I have some serious questions about. She stayed on a liquid diet for 3 months post op with his approval and encouragement and since trying to reintroduce food at about 4 months out is unable to eat even 3 bites without vomiting. I'm concerned 1) that her surgeon who is a general surgeon now heading up a local hospitals "bariatric program"; 2) she had egd about 2 months post op but nothing since; 3) I'm concerned that she might have developed either stricture or adhesions or volvulus. In addition she lost 68 pounds while on liquid only diet but has not lost another pound since that same 4 month mark. She stalled at 220 and is frustrated and very upset that she is both unable to eat and still not losing weight. I don't live with her so I'm taking her word for what she's eating but she swears she throws up everytime she eats and that she only eats 3-4 bites at a time. Has anyone else had this issue and what is best advice /course of action for her to pursue?

    Sudden stop in weight loss

It sounds to me like you are just hitting a stall! I hit my first at about 3wks out and it lasted almost 3 wks! I was distraught and depressed thinking I went through this surgery and all I got was a lousy 15lbs! It turned out that it's normal to go through stalls and that I needed to boost my protein because I was exercising a lot. Don't worry, you will lose again, but if you are super worried, call your NUT and ask for advice. It may be time to up your protein.

    Sudden stop in weight loss

so frustrating to stall. I checked with my nutritionist who told me it was totally normal - because our bodies are adjusting to the weight loss. A stall or plateau just means that your body is healthy and working to stay healthy. It thinks the rapid weight loss is due to illness or trauma - so it protects you until it adjusts again. The most important thing you can do is continue to drink as much Water and take in as much Protein...maybe even go back to the Liver Shrink. Keep us posted!

    Hard time sleeping...

I had horrible acid reflux for a few months post-op. I never took anything for it, just rode it out. I had to sleep propped up, on an incline, like in a hospital bed, to reduce the burning. Also, I wasn't able to lay on my back or side for weeks, I'd feel a pulling sensation somewhere inside when I did, so that was a 2nd reason I had to sleep propped up. I've never been able to sleep in a chair or recliner - although my dad could be an Olympic champion if sleeping in a recliner was a sport! So, I took an old comforter and rolled it into a big log - that plus a pillow, gave me enough of an incline to sleep comfortably and reduce the burning.
  22. She cleared me for solids at my two week post-op. I think I'm going to go back to soft foods only for awhile.

    From the album: A progression!

About a year or so ago, had just entered into three hundred pound territory. After around the time this picture was taken I was not so thrilled to have my pic taken any more so very few full body shots exist.
