    Tomorrow is the big day!

Tomorrow is the beginning of the rest of my life. This journey of mines has been going on for years in my head. I have listened to so many people say that you do not need the lap-band surgery. All you need is a really good excerise program and a great nutritionist. Well damn it I tried all of that and I am tired of the yo-y syndrom that I fall into every year. I had to come to a place where I was sick and tire of being sick and tired of feeling fatigued all the time. I have been to several seminars but the beginning of October 2007 I got real serious about getting a new out look on life. I attended my last seminar of Oct 4 2007 , my first pre surgical appointment, and pyche evaluation on October 16 2007. On October 29 I was told that I was approved for surgery on November 21 2007.( I have the best insurance) I was 363lbs on November 7th 2007, Then on my birthday NOvember 16th I went to weigh in after being on the liver shrinking diet for a week and was 350.3lbs(13 lbs lost). Today I am sitting around excited and nervous all at the same time. I have to be at the hospital @ 6am and my surgery is @ 7:30am., So I will have to get up after 4am to make sure I am there on time. I am late for everything, all the time. I pray that this will soon be the end of that. Well the next time you all here from me I would have had my surgery. Prayers are welcomed and wish me all the best. I am gonna need you guys to help me reach my goals. See ya till next time. Pre-surgical journal. 11/20/2007 @ 9:20pm (Tuesday night) P.S I will be home on thanksgiving day Did I plan that or what. I am so serious about this and this should prove it. :clap2:

I am six weeks away from my lap band surgery. My hasband has gone to every meeting and doctors appointment with me. He is very supportive.

  4. I have been poked and prodded and have suffered countless indignities in preparation for my lap-band surgery. I have watched bloody slideshows and You-Tube videos and heard horror stories galore about potential problems associated with the surgery itself; yet, what did I fear worse than death itself? HUNGER!!! I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that during my Pre-Surgery Liquid Diet I would be starving to death! I worked myself into a bit of a snit at the prospect. I had a “Food Funeral” for all my favorite foods I would never again be able to enjoy: I mourned the loss of the Southern Cheeseburgers at the Penguin Drive-In, said a fond farewell to ribs at Shane’s Rib Shack, shed a tear for my husband’s gourmet grilled Rib-Eyes. I did so much goodbye-ing, that I gained 5 extra pounds prior to the coming of the Grim Reaper, bringing with him the Liquid Diet of Death!!! I did my ground work, you betcha! I researched and researched the most palatable Protein Powder. I bought a shaker, a new blender, and stockpiled Campbells 98% fat free Cream of_________ (you fill in the blank) Soups until I had enough put by to see me through a nuclear holocaust! I sampled this Protein Powder, and that, until I came to the conclusion that none of them are too tasty, but with some doctorin’, they’re almost as good as a Chick-Fil-A shake (without the whipped cream, of course!) I was even able to go out to eat with my family without salivating all over their meals. Those protein shakes are pretty filling, and seem to give me heaps of energy! The first day of the much feared liquid diet came and went…and guess what? I didn’t starve to death! I didn’t even get hungry! Another day passed…still, not too bad! The morning of the third day of the Liquid Diet I hopped on the scales, and was surprised to find that five pounds I’d gained during my week long“Food Funeral” were all gone! Today began the 5th day of the Liquid Diet, and I was down another pound and a half…6.5 so far! If I can avoid the Papa John’s commercial featuring the close-up of the pizza with bubbling cheese, I might just make it through this next couple of weeks alive!

    New weight loss device

I had not heard about this concept for appetite control, but in a couple of weeks I will be having surgery to have a spinal cord stimulator implanted to help control severe leg pain coming from vertebrae L1-L2. The method is the same as you described. The device emits a signal of its own to interfere with the pain signals the affected nerve is sending to the brain. It is interesting that this process is being explored for appetite control. It would still be surgery. I will have two 4" incisions: one over my spine at L1-L2 and one over my right hip to implant the device in a pocket made under the skin. I am glad that the research is out there for finding options to removing a majority of one's stomach. I am glad to have my sleeve, but this would have been an interesting option, too.

    New weight loss device

I had a neurostimulator in my spine for 10 years and just had it removed in November. Mine was an older device that did not have rechargeable capability and given I had lost over 100lbs it was literally sticking out of my lower back, I got it stuck in the slats of a chair once didn't know it and tried to stand up. Ouch!!! Anyway, I wanted to respond because this device literally gave me back my life. I had severe nerve pain running down my leg following lumbar fusion surgery. We tried everything for 5 years and finally they offered me the neurostimulator solution. The first time we turned it on in the operating room it felt magical. The pain was gone and it felt like tiny littles champagne bubbles running up and down my spine and my leg. They work! It only makes sense that they could somehow use it to resolve the feelings of hunger. I do believe in order for long term success a person would still have to deal with head hunger, cravings and the underlying food addiction issues. I know even days or weeks after my RNY, I had head hunger that would make me want to go eat a cheeseburger. I had to learn how to deal with it. Obviously the same diet and exercise will be important as well right? Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
  7. You can call your insurance company and ask. I have been doing that because my surgeons office claim they were going to send the paper work over week before last then last week and they still have yet to receive it. So my surgeons office is playing with my emotions. I would call your insurance company they will be glad to tell you.
  8. I can't believe my surgery will be here in 6 days. This week has been so emotional for me. Little nervous but very excited all in one. Anyone else going through these same emotions???
  9. This is my 1st post on a blog. I had my sleeve procedure on August 19th. Last week I got on the scale for the 1st time since my 1 week follow up and it showed I had lost 50 lbs. I have been avoiding the scale due to fear. So since I conquered it I decided to check again today. Well I gained 4 lbs. How does this happen? I have been eating the same and now I am very disappointed. Has anyone had this happen?
  10. This is my first time back to work and ordering with everyone. I felt really good being able to join in and not feel like I am so restricted. I just chose healthy and ate a small portion. We can get back to normal. This was a huge salad. I will be 7 weeks tomorrow. This is what I ordered Grilled Chick Salad w/ff feta This is what I ate from that. It took 35 min to eat.

    Weightloss CRAWLING!

Mine has slowed way down also. I am at my "sweet spot" and don't think I need a fill - my portions are good, I am staying "full" so I am not quite sure what is going on. When I look at the big picture my weightloss average is right where it is supposed to be - 1-2lbs/week, but geez I want more I just upped my exercise routine this week so hopefully I will see results soon. I was hoping to be at 130lb by my year anniversary but at this point it doesn't look like it will happen - So I reset my goals to be in the 150's for my year checkup with the doctor (June 30th). I do have to say that although my weightloss has slowed down I am so HAPPY with my results.

    Are Any Of You Bipolar???

I have Bipolar 11, and take Riperidone which when i first started made me gain 20 lbs in 3 weeks!!! I kid you not! I had had my gastric bypass July 2009 and had lost 60 lbs by Nobember then i had to be put on Risperidone and it basically reversed the whole surgery. So i go in for lapband surgery next Friday now that i am almost weened from it. Abilify is a weight gainer but not as bad a risperidone. Here is a link to a study about Abilify and other of the same kind of bipolar meds. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/28/business/28psych.html?_r=1&

    AFTER SURGERY

I'm 3 weeks out, and I still have REALLY bad gurgling in my stomach. Nothing painful or anything, just loud and embarrassing lol!
  18. First time and hoping the last time for me! I got a fill a week ago, that is finally giving me some restriction. I can feel that when I eat certain foods, they do not go down as smoothly as before, so I have been extremely conscious of making sure to eat small bites and chewing well. Well, today I was in a rush and took a piece of roast beef for lunch with some veggies. I just took a bite and the doorbell rang. I got up to answer the door, and I swallowed way too fast, and it was not pretty! I had those horrible pains in my chest and back, a little sliming, and then finally after 10 minutes, I threw up a little bit, and it was over. I kept taking deep breaths and walking around until it was over. Whew!! It was awful! I've consisntently read about these episodes, and never truly understand the feeling until now! The one good thing out of all of this, was that it was the UPS man at the door bringing me a package that contained some new clothes that are 3 sizes smaller than what I have worn! So at least I got to smile a bit after it was all over!

    I need some support

The important thing is to research on your own and make sure it's right for you. I recommend you spend at least a hour a day on the internet learning about the surgery. Ask your doctor any questions that you have about the material you have read. Ask YOURSELF, "can I live with eating very little for the rest of my life?"... that's the difficult one to resolve and a lot of people figure it out post-op. What to expect post op: the post-op diet... 2 weeks of liquids and 2 weeks of mush. It is very hard and it is not pleasant and if you cheat, you hurt yourself a lot. Can you stick to that diet?
  20. I feel as if I'm able to eat more now and afraid I'm eating too much. I'm tracking on my fitness pal as best as I can but I'm at a stall for almost 2 weeks and worry of gaining
  21. I have been lurking around for some time now but decided I will join in and tell my story. I started looking into WLS a couple of years ago but at that time my insurance didn't cover it. In the fall my husband started a new job so a few months ago I called the insurance company and on the new insurance it is covered. I was so excited! I found a surgeon that I liked and went in for my exam and decided on the sleeve. I started my 3 month diet that was required for surgery and did a bunch of tests that were also required. Not too long ago I found out that my insurance had changed some of it's requirements. I had read on here about a lot of people who had gone to Mexico for the surgery. At first I thought (no offense) that all of you who went to Mexico were nuts! I kept reading about everyone's experience with Dr. Aceves and decided to give them a call to ask some questions. This was last week. I talked to Nina and there is a special going on if you have your surgery in May. With all of the excellent reviews I have read about Dr. Aceves I decided to talk to my husband about this and see if it was an option. He agreed that it would be fine for me to go ahead and have the surgery done with Dr. Aceves. My date is May 24th. Anyone else going to be there at that time?? This has all gone so quickly and I can't even believe it is really happening and I am so excited and a bit nervous at the same time. I am sure the nerves will kick in even more a few days before I leave. I keep thinking to myself that I can't wait to be me again. I never grew up heavy, in fact I was thin until I was in my 20's. I have been obese for over 15 years now and am looking forward to my new life that is right around the corner! I am sure I will have more questions and comment more as the days get closer but for now I just wanted to say "hi".
  22. Anyone gain weight while doing the pre op classes? I've had a bad week. I'm scared I've gained weight this week. I will be very disappointed if I have. I don't want to lose my chance of having the surgery
  23. Hello Friends. I am a long-time follower of the site and want to first start off by thanking all of you for your posts and insights. Here's my deal: After months of consideration and internet research, I pulled the trigger and went to a seminar here in the Bay Area for a local doctor. Due to the holidays, I cannot get in to see him until Jan 22 for a first appointment. I have a BMI of 44.1 and my insurance does cover the surgery (Anthem PPO - $3500 out of pocket). However, given all the research I've done, I would be lucky if I got a surgery date in early March if I met all of the requirements. On the other hand, I am totally open to going to Tijuana for surgery. I am in contact with both Dr. Garcia and Dr. Kelly's offices and could get sleeved as early as the first week of January. The price difference would be ~$1000 plus I will have to coordinate aftercare w/ my PCP. I am 100% sure that this is the right thing for me after being obese for the last 21 years, but now I am getting antsy. I'm home alone for the holidays so I think this would be the perfect time to do my 2-week pre-surgery diet. What do you guys think? Should I go for it or am I being too hasty?

    3-4 week stall

I'm only 16 days out and have hit a stall. I'm getting everything in, however, and hope to get the walking going this week. I've lost about 14 lbs but nothing in 6 days! Weird!
