    Daily Menus for Maintenance

My goodness that's alot of food for 1000-ish cals. Have you considered doing a bariatric meal prep side business? You could probably make a killing.

    Bariatric team approval?

I'm sending out lots of good thoughts you get the call soon! I think mine was so quick because my insurance was changing and no longer allowing bariatric surgery, so it was a race against the clock to get me on the surgery table before the change happened! I suspect my patient coordinator had something to do with it going so fast out of desperation, she said it usually takes one to two weeks, so I'm crossing my fingers for you that it's quick!
  3. Thanks for sharing! The only Vitamin B12 I am taking is in my bariatric multivitamin... which lately I keep forgetting to take! I wasn't too concerned until I looked up high bilirubin with high vitamin b12... and together they indicate possible cancer and so of course it is a bit concerning. Of course, Cancer isn't the only cause... but just scary possibility. If others have a high b12 after surgery, I am less concerned though will continue monitoring and talk to the doc when I see him. I think I will keep my Dec appointment unless he calls me in because of labs... and then I will drop off a copy of my labs at my PCP office and SHE will probably call me and we can talk. I thought this might all be surgery/rapid weight loss related, but the web search had me worried. B12 is water soluble, so normally you just pee the extra out. Trying to up my fluids to see if it will help.
  4. It takes this below to keep my blood work dead on, Key is absorption - You can go with all the marketing or you can go to the facts - I have found the most powerful ones that have the highest levels of absorption are the weight lifting ones - The black GNC powder realy hits me hard, use less and it does go in my system. The bariatric ones are often passed and not even 50% absorbed so be careful Key is the little supplement 1oz blasts also they add the extra mix
  5. just check to make sure your vitamins meet the ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery) requirements. It usually takes two multivitamins per day to meet the guidelines, plus a couple of extra individual supplements (usually iron and calcium). You have to scroll down to page 6 to see the requirements (page six is entitled "Supplement Recommendations to Prevent Post-WLS Micronutrient Deficiency"). I take two Centrum Silver tablets (or the generic equivalent) every day. Here's the section with the page that lists the requirements: https://asmbs.org/app/uploads/2008/09/ASMBS-Nutritional-Guidelines-2016-Update.pdf

  7. I asked my Weightloss Center and they only support vitamins that are sold by the WLC. It's a horrible place to go and I do not recommend them to anyone. Anyway, I bought Bariatric Fusion Tropical Fruit Bariatric Multivitamin Soft Chews for Post Bariatric Surgery Patients Including Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy, 60 Count, 1 Month Supply and I asked my WLC dietician and she was upset that I did not want to take the Celebrate MC r18 that they sold. I explained that the chewable they sell makes me sick and I cannot even force myself to eat them without getting ill. She said "fine" then told me that I could take the ones I bought but didn't tell me how many I needed to take or if the recommand two chewable a day were fine. Anyone know if two chewables a day are fine? I'm not sure if it's natural and I never noticed, but today I was able to see my hair start shedding and I had my surgery 3 months ago today. I haven't noticed this in the past.
  8. I completed all my requirements on 11/4. The patient coordinator said that she will upload it all to my chart for the team to approve it to be sent to my insurance. How long did it take your team to approve your chart to be sent to your insurance? The representative for my surgeons office said a few weeks. Sent from my SM-A205U using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. Great work! @MeowAMR! I’m in a similar spot. Down 49 lbs since 7/30, and just 11 from the one hundreds, so very much hoping to get there by the new year. I can see a big difference in my shape and clothes. I had my Bariatric appointments the week before last and everything came back normal. I feel like I’ve been more tortoise than hare in my losing, but my PA and nutritionist were thrilled. And honestly, I am not sure I’d want to be losing any more quickly. I already feel like I’ve got some bagginess in the skin of my thighs, arms and under my chin/jaw. Hoping my collagen can keep up.
  10. How is everyone's journey going? I've been doing good. I haven't been tracking my food... bad I know, but I'm still steadily losing weight. I'm down 51lbs in 3 1/2months weighing in at 210 right now. Only 11lbs til onederland! I think I'm gonna hit that little goal before January like I had hoped. I've seen some people that I hadn't seen since last February and they were like WHOA! You've lost a lot of weight I said about 50lbs and they said wow it looks like you've lost so much more you looks so different! I was like thankssss! So I wonder how my family is gonna react when they see me in person. I havent seen them in probably a year and a half. I had my 3month blood draws done by my PCM since my Bariatric clinic is 2hrs away. I will have an over the phone appt with them after i send them my results. But my PCM was really happy with my results she said my cholesterol dropped and she was happy about that and that everything was perfect. Overall everything is going good and I am so happy i chose to get the surgery!! Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. My surgeons plan - Walking right after surgery to help the healing process. Then released to do more after a month. (They would like to see patients walking for an hour 4/5 days a week) Here is my problem with waiting for six months (only my opinion) Exercise with bariatric diet complimented my weight loss. I got to goal in six months. Would I have lost at this rate if I waited? IDK

    The Maintenance Thread

Shhhh. Don't tell me that! Thinking that I can't gain more than 10 lbs after having plastic surgery without screwing up the work is one factor that is helping me stay where I am!! (actually, my plastic surgeon didn't say anything at all about gaining or losing weight. But I've read others' postings on this and/or other bariatric forums that their plastic surgeons advised them not to gain or lose more than 10 lbs or it'd affect the work. Since my PCP told me that 140-160 is a good weight range for me, and I had plastic surgery at 150 lbs, that fit in absolutely perfectly!)

    The Maintenance Thread

I've been thinking a lot about BMR, and why I maintain on higher cals, while others maintain on so much less. There is nothing special about me that I should be such an outlier. I'm not particularly muscular, barley active at all. I got to be MO not by any extreme type of binge eating, just your typical eating too much & too poorly. Just an idea ... but those that maintain on sub 1500 cals, do you think it is possible you could maintain at higher cals? Is your body just at a set point, and it's staying stable because you don't have much more fat to lose? Have anyone flexed their cals up, gotten past an initial bounce, and then seen the scale go back down? This is a small, self selecting subsection here on BP. In general we are here because we are more dedicated, and compliant than your average WLS patient, IMO. Is there a whole other world out there of WLS patients not tracking and eating freely, and maintaining at whatever weight they are comfortable with? Or even some on BP who don't post about their diet because their experience is different than most everything they read here? Also, this is considered metabolic surgery, right? Part of the science behind it is it is a positive metabolic affect. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/13/well/why-weight-loss-surgery-works-when-diets-dont.html https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3920787/ https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/03/140326142209.htm http://clinchem.aaccjnls.org/content/64/1/72 https://www.nature.com/news/weight-loss-surgery-a-gut-wrenching-question-1.15560 https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/12/7/16587316/bariatric-surgery-weight-loss-lap-band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rPoeYfOm8I https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5485884/ So .. I'm not sure what to make of all this, just that I can't be all alone .... right??
  14. In terms of the gall bladder surgery, the recovery on that was probably only a couple days. And no, I made no major diet modifications after surgery. Typically, someone who has had their gallbladder out needs to reduce fat intake. I was already on a bariatric diet at that point, so I made no changes.

    WLS and Clothes

Wal Mart has those sizes. I went to Good Will and bought shirts and pants knowing that I would not wear them very long. My local area has a place where you can exchange your larger sizes for smaller sizes as well. The owner of the resale shop had bariatric surgery so is understanding
  16. Health is still #1 for me but damn str8, i can’t wait to look good to myself and others. Sadly, I know after massive weight loss It will not be...... For me it’s massive...some of you start at 200 which I consider small but I started above 300. What will happen is that i will look good in my clothes assuming I hit my goal, but I won’t look Good nekkid. So....then plastics need to be done. We don’t want to go through all this to not love our BOD. So...saving $$ for plastics is important to me. Not sure i anyone follows Bariatric surgeon Dr. V, on YouTube but he has many videos how if you have massive weight loss, you must have plastics afterThat’s the only way to get rid of those fat cells and for you to get right mentally. Those fat cells won’t leave unless you get plastic surgery...so you can lose weight....but they stay there....those little cells.waiting for you to feed them again and get fluffy again. Plastics will be motivation not to gain again. Just my 2 cents for whateva it’s worth, lol.
  17. The vitamin D situation is tricky since absorption falls following bariatric surgery. Also, it absorbs best when taken with at least some fat (150 Calories in most people, but maybe more is needed following bariatric surgery). Many people don't take the vitamin D with enough fat. I am going to do a short study on a non conventional vitamin D in people who have had bariatric surgery. It may work better post bariatric surgery than the conventional forms (and it may not need simultaneous fat intake). How fast the study begins depends on how fast I can get the supplier of the vitamin D to get me what I need in the right form. 18. To Fluffy Chix. Unfortunately, no iron supplement has an absorption that comes close to meat iron. Of the iron supplements out there, I like Ferrochel (sometimes called Gentle Iron or ferrous bisglycinate). It's sold at some Kroger stores. It tends to be easier on the digestive system than most iron supplements. Also, it has been found to work a little faster than ferrous sulfate in some studies. One of these studies is mine, though it was in women runners, not in people who have had bariatric surgery. Ferrochel cannot be put in protein shakes because it tastes awful, but is OK in capsules. I used a relative of Ferrochel in a study on people who just had bariatric surgery. This relative is NOT well absorbed by itself, but it worked well when I mixed it with some other things. It worked fine even when calcium was taken at the same time. Shortly, I will have a meal replacement line out that includes this iron. Surgery Date

Again, being nosy--are you using advanced surgical partners? I saw them when I started having problems with my 10 year old lap band. I liked the doctor but his office staff was a mess- wouldn't return calls when they said they would, no follow through for scheduling tests, etc. And they incorrectly told me that since I've already had a bariatric procedure that Medicare won't pay for a revision. Medicare didn't pay for the first one so why would they balk at a revision? Anyway I knew I needed the band removed regardless of whether or not I could get a revision and was unhappy with ASPs office, so I did some "doctor shopping" on the internet and found Virginia Bariatric Surgery Center in Reston and their office is so helpful and better informed and helpful than the other. I've said before that there are lots of good doctors out there, but if the "front half" of the practice is a disaster it doesn't matter how good the "back half" is! Laura

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Dayum. Did you dump? Ok, I think I know the answer to this...but your meals seem "normal sized". Does it take you a while to eat them? Or do you eat them all at one sitting? Just wondering cuz you know, mine are on the larger end of bariatric size close to normal size. I could eat normal if I let myself. And I can do it all at one sitting. So I guess I'm just looking for affirmation through comfort in numbers lol, for how much volume I can eat at a sitting! TIA!
  21. And I also concur, I still can't do what OP claimed to do, I'm 14 months 2 days out, went to Bible Study- Luncheon yesterday at my new church. One teaspoon of each item, Might have added up to 1/4-1/3 cup into to talk monkey- doodled it around on my plate so it looked like I Was Really Eating, took 42 minutes, laid my spoon down , excused MYSELF, headed for the nearest BR where I anointed the porcelain chamber there with lunch. Some days I feel like I am a permanent resident of Emesis City, does my Bariatric Surgeon and clinic know? Yep but the last CNP I saw basically told me to be grateful for my weight loss and stop complaining, oh well the protein shakes, soups and broths along with copious vitamins and minerals are keeping Me from falling further apart but Do What OP alledges to Have Done, I CANNOT FATHOM IT! And yeah, somehow my Labs are not skewed out of mild deficits in a couple things , so of course they will not agree that I am Gastrointestinally Crippled in any WAY. My Cross to Bear Perhaps?

Help! In Terrible Need of Positive Vibes

Man, I wish I had some good advice for you. I COULD say "well, what kind of friends are they if they don't support you in this" but that doesn't make it any less hurtful. But hopefully some of them are TRUE friends an will support you through thick and thin (😁) and your appearance or eating habits will not affect your friendship in any way. Do you have bariatric support groups near you? That is a great place to meet lots of people who are going through what you are so they will understand the changes, and you may have some new best friends among them. And I know we all can't go out for a (small) bite (byte?) over the computer, but don't forget you have friends here! Come visit often.😘
  23. And my new Friend, if you go back and re-read my much earlier postings, you WILL SEE that Freudian as it sounds , IT WAS ALL MY MOTHER'S FAULT, IF course the Fact I stayed that WAY all of my childhood and most of my Adult LIFE, that's MY BLAME but Honestly I knew of No Way out of the Quagmire, tried all the diets known to the Western World, up to and including Medical Supervised Starvation and a few the Orientals must have sent over, NOBODY EVER EVER even mentioned Bariatric Surgery for Weigh Loss. A little over 1 year ago I was a Sad Sick on my- way- to -dying 365+ pounds at 72, now I am 180, a year older and Much Wiser, Much Healthier and the fact I largely exist on protein shakes, soups and broths, really NBD in the scheme of things, I AM ALIVE, Gastrointestinally Crippled but ALIVE! So it Ain't perfect but it is MINE and I WILL Claim what victories I HAVE.

    november sleeve

I was placing an order for some shakes on the Bariatric Advantage web site yesterday and I saw this: "Chicken Soup flavor available to ship late November." So if you don't like sweet shakes, it looks like they will have a solution soon. They are accepting pre-orders.
  25. Well, my experience is by no means normal, but it's certainly an interesting read: About 6 weeks after my lap band surgery, I started getting severe pains in my upper abdomen (kind of at the lower end of the rib cage/center) and often accompanied by vomiting mucous/foam. My doctor kept passing it off as getting something stuck, esophageal spasms or my fave: psychological problems. It was happening nearly daily. I felt miserable and progressively felt sicker. I lived on soda crackers and tea for about 6 months until I decided to see a different doctor and DEMAND they check my gall bladder. Testing showed I had sludge in there and the surgeon later told me that my bile duct was stretched out from passing so many large stones. Well DUH! The gall bladder surgery itself was a breeze. I had some gas pains, but they were very minor compared with the lap band (and gastric sleeve, for that matter) surgeries. I felt better IMMEDIATELY in terms of the gall bladder issues. No more gut-wrenching pains or vomiting. I didn't have that sick taste in my mouth all the time and I could actually eat again. Here's the kicker: they dislocated my hip during the gall bladder surgery! Yes, you heard that right. Somehow, they dislocated my left up and I woke up in EXCRUCIATING hip pain and needed a few weeks off of work to recover from THAT. Moral of the story: if you know you have gall bladder issues, these won't go away on their own. The surgery for gall bladder removal was a much easier recovery than bariatric surgery and you will feel 100% better afterward.
