  2. Hey I’m 5 1/2 weeks post-op My progress has been stalled I’m wondering if I’m getting enough calories in I’m only averaging about 400 to 600 a day how do I get more calories in because I’m sure this is the reason why I’m stalling so soon in my journey I’m so lost my bariatric team is pretty much nonexistent because of the COVID-19 stuff that’s going on.

    Revision completed

Weighing in this morning at 165.8. I am 2 months post op from my revision from VSG to GP today. I lost 2 lbs this month and am 1 lb away from my lowest weight last summer. I dont expect to lose anymore weight but if I do I will take it as a buffer. I would like to stay under 170 for life !! I had my first episode of too much food the other day. I ate pork steak and being too full made me sick but I could not throw up, so I was miserable for almost 2 hours !! I didnt weigh it but I am guessing it was around 4 to 5 oz. Never again. So I do have restriction with solid protein but I think I ate too fast and by the time my brain caught up it was too late ! The restriction is not the same as with VSG but it is restriction although I cant explain it. I quit tracking my food around the 5th of July because I noticed my weight creeping up a little. For some reason I do better not tracking after I get going, this happened with my VSG. In Jan of 2019 I quit tracking and lost around 10 lbs and kept it off all last summer. The only thing I can think is I was obsessed with food and stayed to focused on it tracking and would eat up to X amount of calories and protein even if I wasnt hungry. I was like oh I didnt get all my calories so I will just have this ect ect ect. I am weird I know, lol. I am still having the burning acid from time to time, but it isnt as often as it was with the sleeve. I am hoping my esophagus is healing but wont know anything until I go see the Dr. for my checkup in August and am scheduled for an EGD. I think I have another hiatal hernia. I say this because sometimes I feel like something is stuck in my throat when eating like before just not as often. All in all I am doing much better then I was at the beginning of this bypass and am getting use to it.
  4. You could try Weightwise in Oklahoma. It's where I'm going and so far I like them. I think it's 10 for everything but they're nice and it wouldn't be as far of a drive! Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. so, i am one week out. and my doc calls for a 2 week liquid diet of protein shakes, broth, sugar free jello and juice. I am having trouble taking in more than 400 calories a day. 2 of the premier protein shakes has 320 calories, and between 10 calorie broth and 5 calorie juice, i end up around 400 calories a day. that just seems like too little. my understanding is that if you dont eat enough calories, you body will reject losing weight because it thinks you are starving. i can drink a couple more protein shakes, but that would be way too much protein. would appreciate your thoughts.

    Food Before and After Photos

I can understand why you didn’t tell your teens. I did tell my 2 “kids” but they were 19 & 28 which is very different. Body issues at that age make a lasting impression. I told a total of 5 people, my husband, my 2 sons, 1 friend and my sister. I didn’t tell my stepsons or my brother, I don’t see them as often and I’m pretty private. I made a new easy “pie” last night that was super good. I don’t have any issues with breads or sugar, however I do watch how much I have. I baked wonton wrappers in a muffin tin 350 for about 8-10 minutes without filling. I stacked 2 in each tin for this dessert. I cut up apples and cooked them in water and lemon juice with about 1 tsp of sugar per apple and added cinnamon. I also sprinkled a little cinnamon and sugar on the wontons before I baked them. Just fill the wontons afterward with whatever you like. Sugar free pudding would be good too. My son scarfed a few down and I had one. Total of 75 calories, it probably was less but I always add calories when I’m eyeballing a recipe. Nice change of pace for when I get a sweet tooth.

    Dizzy

I had this last week and found out it’s because I’m dehydrated. We are still supposed to be drinking 64 ounces of water every single day. I just have not been able to do that. I have been working for the last several days to get an additional 10 ounces, so now I’m up to getting about 30 a day.

    Lap-Band Removal

Personally i would have NEVER chosen to have my band (2009) removed just because. If it's not giving you trouble, i would leave it alone. After mine was ER removed 2017 (143lbs) about 2 weeks later, hunger came back with a vengeance. I couldn't get a revision because i "didn't weigh enough". I had no problems until the stomach virus that caused violent vomiting...... NOT the bands fault, NOT my fault.... It wasn't until 2.5 years and a gain of 30lbs that i paid out of pocket 14K to have the sleeve done 8/2019. Starting weight with that 173ish. Today i weigh 124lbs. and even with the weight loss i still preferred the band. I liked the control i had with the band. As far as the removal. That was on a Thursday and i was back at work on Monday. Sleeve was done on a Wednesday and back at work on Monday I say this to all my band friends...... if you feel like your band stopped working for you ... it didn’t, you just stopped using it...
  9. I know things are just starting to get back going again, but whats the wait time looking like for people like me that just completed all my pre-op. Will all the things that I completed still be good if the wait is really long ( ekg, labs, etc)

    July 2020 WLS Veterans

Hi! This is my first time logging on in 2020. I definitely am very grateful to have had the VSG, in August of 2015. I was miserable and just receding from life. I reached my goal weight in 2016, and then my dream weight in 2017 - the lowest I'd been since I was 14. I perhaps got too thin, down to a size XS / 2, and I'm tall. But I felt amazing and began receiving compliments from strangers and friends alike on looking beautiful, and I felt beautiful. Unfortunately I regained some weight in 2019 after some dental disasters (I have several baby teeth that lack permanent roots, so they need to all be pulled and replaced with implants) required that I eat nothing but soft food. And then I regained again in 2020 after experimenting with fertility treatments (which weren't successful, sadly) and falling back into depression. I've gained a few more while quarantining since March. Grocery shopping became one of the few out of the house activities after we transitioned to working online, and I slipped into past habits of eating for joy and out of boredom. My BMI is currently 26, so I'm not too far out from being in a healthy weight range again. I just want to get back on track and prevent continuing regain. I started tracking my food again on MyFitnessPal, and cleaned out the kitchen of temptations. I am hiking more often and going for scenic drives when I'm feeling restless to get out of the house. I returned here for motivation / camaraderie. I hope you are all doing well!
  11. Hello All, Hoping someone who has gone through a gastric band revision to a gastric sleeve can help me. I got the band 10 years ago and for awhile it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I lost 100 pounds and I was working out every day and life was good. Then the reflux started. So bad I spent months sleeping in a chair because lying in bed made me choke with all the stomach acid coming up. They took all the fluid out of my band and now I'm on track to get the band removed and get a gastric sleeve. Very worried about going to a hospital in the middle of the pandemic, but I'm going to be 60 soon and they're telling me that it's pretty much now or never. I'm hoping someone here who has had the experience with a band conversion to a sleeve can give me some advice about how different it is, or if it's similar and how much harder it is than the initial surgery. If there is no one on here who has had a conversion I'd also like to hear from people who got the sleeve and if they'd do it again. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
  12. Gastric Sleeve surgery in 10 days. Praying I get through this with no complications and no COVID. So nervous.  Any tips?

Get some SF Popsicles, they are a life saver if you can't keep other foods down. If you have to cook for people in your household, cook some dishes for them before surgery. Get a pillow for the ride home. Chapstick will come in handy. And if you are super nervous before surgery, you can ask your doctor for something to calm your nerves. Good Luck!

you know what? i had it 7 days ago, and it really was no big deal. took about an hour, i woke up in no pain except a scratchy throat from the intubation. That lasts several days. The worst part of the whole thing is getting rid of the gas they blow into you during surgery. Horrible gas cramps for a couple of nights, then fine. My insisions are starting to itch, but that is no big deal. You will be fine!!

  13. Hey guys. I really need help. I am exactly one year post op. I haven’t been eating right at all since the surgery. I lost weight the first 9 months and have basically plateaued for the last three months. Abt 3-4 pounds down collectively. I lost 100 pounds and still have 35 to go to hit a normal bmi. I thought that I was just being lazy and that’s why I couldn’t get my eating habits under control. Since COVID-19 I’ve been home and paid all my attention to my health and eating habits. If I follow a strictly high Protein diet, I am so constipated I feel like I’m going to pass out from pain. If I do fruits and vegetables I get insanity gassy. I need to stay away from too much fat because I get oil leaking if not.. so that literally just leaves me with carbs. And not even complex carbs. I’ve been naturally gravitating to these foods before surgery-obviously, and now anything else I eat makes me sick. Anyone else went through this? And this point, it’s not so much about the weight loss. I reached a point mentally where I don’t NEED to be thin in order to be happy. I just want to be healthy and feel good. And junk food is not doing that.... any advice?

    Started soft foods today

I just started week 5. Lost 17 pounds in the first 28 days. I tolerated liquids well so doctor gave OK to start puree on day 10 (instead of day 15) and soft foods a week later (day 17). At first I could only eat a couple of tablespoons of food (the entire day) but now can eat a full egg with some additional egg whites added. The amount you can eat will increase with time and will vary depending on what it is. I can eat about 5 oz of yogurt but only 3 oz of meat. I still drink a protein shake almost every day in order to meet my 60 gram daily protein requirement. I tried eating meat twice in one day to get in protein, boy did I pay a price. I felt miserable the entire evening and into the night. I keep my calorie count between 500-600 per day. Give your body time to adjust. And yes, food does taste good after having had just liquids for a couple of weeks.
  15. Drank the magnesium citrate about required for surgery tomorrow and threw up about 10 minutes after finishing it. Did this happen to anyone else? I don’t know who to call on a Sunday for info. I did take 2 dulcolax this morning (also required as part of bowel prep).

    July 2020 WLS Veterans

Congrats on your long term success. We are some of the faithful... perhaps lucky to carry Our WLS on for years. I’m on a bit of upward gain, but have faith 10 lbs can be gone... still takes devotion and time. Once again. I’m so happy you got to live at a “ normal” (whatever that means to us) life. I am truly grateful!!
  17. yes. This is the first time in my adult life that I've actually been able to maintain a loss (I'm five years out and have been in maintenance for 3.5 years) not gonna lie - it's a daily struggle - I still plan my eating for the day every morning (or the night before), log my food intake, and try to stay within my maintenance calorie range (which for me is 1500-1700 per day - but that's going to vary for everyone). It's a hassle but it's do-able. I NEVER could maintain a weight loss before I had WLS. I should add that most of us gain 10-20 lbs after we hit our lowest weight. It's not inevitable, but it seems to happen to the majority, for whatever reason. I shot up 12 lbs in year 3, and then another eight pounds last summer & fall (I'm in the process of dealing with the recent eight-lb gain. I have no desire to go back to my lowest weight, which I think was too low for me). But keeping the weight off is do-able if you monitor yourself and, as someone above said, see this as your new lifestyle rather than another diet.

    No exercise

Due to a broken hip I have not been able to exercise so walking is all I can do. Surgery to fix hip was 7/8/20. My Gastric Bypass was 6/24/19. Hoping to lose 40 lbs.

    Arm Lift Experiences?

I had an extended arm lift- scar from elbow to under middle of each breast to get the loose skin that was at the side boob area. That little bit of creepy wrinkly skin you have was my entire upper arm but twice as wrinkled re the depth of the skin. If I wore elbow length sleeves you could see loose, wrinkly skin hanging out. I had the arms of a 90 year old. If I had your arms I would have been on the fence. Have you done a lot of arm exercises to build up muscles to help with the lose skin? I would suggest getting a consult and maybe you could get the smaller incision that just goes in your arm pit. I don't know if that would "fix" it enough for you but then the incision would be hidden. My arms were so bad that if I wore a tank top and had my arms down at my side you could see across the room that my arms were terrible looking. Now at 5 months I have a thin red line if my arms are at my side but as soon as I lift my arm up the scar turns skin color/white. So in another 6 months it should be faded even when my arms are down. Now if I am 10 feet from the bathroom mirror and hold my arms up you can see a faint line. I would guess next summer if you are more than 5 feet away you wouldn't probably wouldn't even notice the scar.

    Keto

I hope it goes well for you. You will most likely loose a good deal of weight initially. However, my long term keto friends still struggle with weight maintenance over time, Sustainability and nutritional balance can be issues. I know I would never be able to handle the high fat load of a keto plan. I have been on a whole food plant based plan (WFPB) for about 6 months now and doing great, feeling great. Weight is well controlled and I am NEVER hungry. I eat 8-10 servings of nutritionally dense veggies/fruit every day, along with at least 3 servings of legumes/tofu/tempeh, 2 servings of whole grains, and a wide variety of nuts and seeds. I get at least 60 grams of protein daily, All my labs are great. My cholesterol dropped from 235 to 152 and LDL is actually BELOW normal range! Even 100+ pound weight loss did nothing for my cholesterol and high LDL. Interestingly, when looking at populations with the greatest longevity and members over 100 years old, all of them are plant based with very little animal protein. Hmmmmmm. The highest rates of osteoporosis and hip fracture are in populations that consume the most meat and dairy products. Hmmmmmm. Food for thought. Bottom line for me is that WFPB is healthy, sustainable, and affordable. I do triathlons, distance biking and hiking (aiming for a one day, rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike and a 100 mile bike race next year), and I feel great with loads of energy! WFPB allows one to enjoy plenty of healthy carbs that are incredibly satisfying and which provide a lot of energy. I never feel deprived.
  22. Thanks. It's happening on Thursday! I'm so glad you breast/tummy work went well. How long was your recovery? I'm doing arms first. Then in the future, breasts and tummy would be great. I'll try and keep you posted. I should some before and after pics. I'm really going between anxiety and excitement at the moment... Also scared that they will stop elective surgeries again because of COVID-19. Now, I just want it over with!

    Sent home after 7 hours!

I came home from the hospital 10 pounds over my surgery weight. It took about a week for the fluids to come off. I agree with others, don’t weigh yet!
  24. Definitely normal. I gained over 10 lbs right after surgery. I had never been over 200 lbs in my life and planned to NEVER hit the 200 lbs mark but I was 203 lbs for a few days after surgery. and I panicked. It is just all the air they pump in you and the IV fluids.. only lasts for like 3-5 days and it will vanish. Don't worry!!

    Sent home after 7 hours!

Congrats on your surgery and new tool! I agree on waiting on weighing yourself! That water weight gain is serious lol. i have renpho. It connects to my phone via Bluetooth and keeps everything documented for me so I can go back and see what I weighed at week 2, 10 and so on. It also is a body mass analyzer so it tells me how much bone density, body fat and blah blah blah. It keeps track of my BMI as well. I have it set up so when I open the app, it shows me what my current weight is but also how much I’ve lost and how many BMI points I’ve lost. You can also do body measurements and keep track of them on there. I believe it’s called a renpho body smart scale and is on amazon for about $32.
