Still in the aprehensive stage...
TQUAD64 replied to monicapv's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Monica: I was nervous about having another surgery. I have had 11 or 12. surgeries..so many that I have lost count. We joke in my family that I should get the next one free. :-) Anyway, this was a last resort. When I was younger...as a child, teenager, and twenty-something adult, I never had a weight problem. I jogged, lifted weights, and had a very active life. (I am 5'6" and started at 251) But something happened after the birth of my second child (26 yr). I could not lose the weight and I did not have time to jog or lift weights. My family life trumped my health. For the last 19 years I have struggled with weight gain and loss. I have been on diet after diet. So when I heard about gastric procedures I began to do the research. I still wonder what if this one fails too. But I have the support and the tools to make this work. I do not regret my decision. And I have no doubt you will not regret having the procedure. Good luck! -
Still in the aprehensive stage...
jengraz replied to monicapv's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Monica, Many people here have been right where you are. I was banded on 12/13 in Monterrey, Mexico. I was very very apprehensive until I made the decision for surgery, then it was a great feeling, a relief. Sure I was nervous, but committed in my heart. I actually told NO ONE that I was going to Mexico for surgery, because I knew I would not get the support I needed. It was scary, going to Mexico for the first time, alone, and having surgery. I am a nurse (and BTW, my coordinator said that 35% of their clients are doctors and nurses and other health care professionals from the US!) , I constantly struggled with the thoughts of feeling I had to "resort" to banding because I was lazy or a loser. It's easy, right? Just eat less and exercise more, right? Well, it's more complicated than that, and any person of weight will tell you that. Obese people are experts on weight loss--after all, we have been on diets over half our lives! I knew I wouldn't be covered with my health insurance (my BMI wasn't quite high enough and I didn't have enough comorbid complications yet) , but to be honest, I went to Mexico because I trusted the doctor I went to. AND I do not regret my choice. The doctors in Mexico have performed more lapband surgeries than the doctors in Mexico, and some of the surgeons in Mexico have proctored US physicians! Just do your research on Mexican doctors--there are many excellent people on here to be a resource for you. Review the forums, as probably any question you have has no doubt been asked already. Once you research, make your decision, and commit, you will find your apprehension will turn into excited anticipation! Jenny -
8/13/08 This is my first post on this website. I am excited to start my journey with weight loss and into a new world! My life will never ever be about BEING FAT AGAIN!!!! I received the best news that I was approved by BCBS-NJ yesterday. I couldn't have been more excited. I should have my surgery within the next 4-5 weeks. I am waiting for the day now. I can't believe this is finally a reality for me!! So here is my story...in 2002 tipping the scales at 308 I vowed never to get any bigger. I went to Great America and was embarrassed when I couldnt' fit on the one ride I wanted to ride. The raging bull. So I began an exercise program on my own and I worked out 6 times a week, 2 times a day 45 mins to an hour each time. I lost 50 lbs from 3/1-6/1/02 as the time went on I continued to lose and eventually got down to 243 from 308. I maintained for about a year trying to reach my goal of 170-175 but it never became a reality. So as the time went on my weight started to rise . And nothing worked any longer. So here I am today 8/13/08, 330 pounds  and I will NEVER EVER see that number again:rolleyes2:. I should have my surgery by mid September. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

My NUT said that not eating is more detrimental to your health and over-all weight loss and wanted me to get back to getting my nutrition through food as quickly as possible. It's scary, the thought of gaining the weight back but stalls are normal and usually I have to increase my intake to break a stall. Take it day by day and make good/healthy choices.

Had a hellish summer that is ending much better than it began. My divorce is in progress and I'm putting one foot in front of the other. Tomorrow my girls return to college and although we've been cramped where we're currently living, I will miss them terribly. Scared of what the next few months will bring. I won't eat over this. I won't! I'm telling everyone here, right now, that I'm focusing on taking good care of myself and will continue to make progress in my weight loss while I face these scary challenges. That is all. I don't know if that's a rant or a rave but I needed to say it!

Alexis, you really look fantastic - I know it's cliched but what an an amazing transformation! I'm loving all the photos coming up here - it's brilliant "getting to know" people! Michelle - I've only lost 35lbs (I'm delighted with the loss, but as a percentage of what I am hoping to lose, it is still in the early stages - hopefully!) but all the weight has gone from my face (yay), my waist is actually defined (also yay) but also from my boobs - I hadn't heard the expression sock boobs but I have definitely got the beginings of that! None of my bras fit me and my "push up" bra actually sniggered and was heard whispering something on the lines of "yeah right" and "I'm a bra, not a freaking miracle worker....." to the other bras eyeing me disdainfully from the drawer this morning - one of the few advantages to being large was (in addition to constant warmth!) was the ol' reliable killer cleavage....sigh....no more! I would have greatly appreciated a book on origami for christmas so's I'll be actually be able to get the damn things into a bra in a few months............! :D

Wow, guys, thanks! I'm sorry it has taken me so long to post again, we had to ire another bartender at work, so I've been going crazy training someone new. One of the owner's friends who has never bartended before. Oy! Sue, I had been wondering how the "kid" was doing. Glad she's happy with her reduction. I'll definitely want some sort of reduction or lift, depends on how close to goal I get and how I'll look then. I hear ya on the draperies...a tummy tuck is most definitely in my future! Shelly, I don't think I really have a secret. I haven't cut out any of the food groups. I do try to get in Protein first, but I don't go low-carb. My brain simply can't survive on a low-carb diet, I get fuzzy and my memory goes. I need a good memory for work, so I don't risk it. I guess I eat healthy compared to how I ate before surgery. My pre-surgery diet consisted of fast food (usually two whole value meals) and chocolate. I could go for days eating nothing but chocolate. I do still eat chocolate when I crave it, but I force myself to have a more structured meal plan around it. I tend to use the meal plans at www.ediets.com and really like them. As far as exercise, I've been really lax in that department. My job keeps me active, but at this point, not active enough, so I'm going to be rejoining the gym this week. Getting a fill next week too, hopefully! When I saw her last month, I had a horrible cold/flu thing going on and she didn't want to fill me because of the mucus. Desperately needing a fill now though. That combined with exercise should jumpstart me again. Was nice having a break over the holidays though. Sometimes weight loss on top of everything else going on is just too much to think about! Sorry for rambling. Thanks again, everyone! Sometimes it helps me to see my pics together to get an idea of how far I've come. When I look in the mirror, I'm still fat, just not *as* fat, so that gets discouraging at times.

How to choose? Sleeve vrs RNY
Pkdvm replied to tnpeach's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Just to add what my doc said regarding GERD/heartburn and WLS- I asked specifically as I've been treated for GERD for many years- he said that while there is a chance that reflux may appear or worsen with the sleeve, in his patients, he's only had 3 that needed revision to RnY because of that. I feel confident in going ahead with the sleeve, as weight loss itself may improve my reflux dramatically. Good luck with your decision- as long as it's a fully informed one, it's the right decision for you. -
Can't believe I'm 3 months out!!
mistyk73 replied to Caliblonde's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
This is awesome!!! Congrats on all of the weight loss!!! -
scale fixation can be easily remedied by throwing the darn thing in the dumpster and weighing only at your doctor's office. My pre-op weight loss was nothing to write home about either, but post op I am down 36 pounds as of last Monday. Believe, Zeniada! :cursing:

Need a Buddy/Mentor/ I'm desperate and failing miserabily
pinklily27 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My name is Jessica and I have had my band for what will be two years in December of this year and I am a measly 11 pounds less than my presurgery weight After my surgery in 2009 I was doing great. I was losing weight and eventually reached a loss of 80 pounds by the fall of 2010. It was wonderful and I was only 20 pounds from my goal weight , then my band slipped and I had to have it removed and a new one placed. I have steadily regained much of that weight in the year since I was rebanded. I contantly sabatoge myself and eat around my band! I need help refocusing and getting back on track. If there is a successful and positive person out there who can and is willing to help me, I am willing to listen and give it all I have to be successful! Thanks Jessica -
I have FINALLY been approved by my insurance(Cigna). But the surgeon I origionally signed up for is currently scheduling for December (ARGHHH  ) but the WLC says one of her partners ( fairly new but has studied under my highly recommended surgeon) is available at the end of October. Had they said he wasn't available til November, I would have just said "No, I'll wait til December" but, I really don't want to be dealing with surgery/recovery during the holidays since I want to go to KS to visit family and friends at that time. Plus, I really want to get started on my weight loss journey and not fall into the over eater mentallity I always do. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired and would really like to spend money on Christmas gifts vs. prescriptions (over $200/mth WITH insurance!) I feel like he (Dr. William Gibson) must be doing a good job with the surgery, or my doctor (Dr. Virginia McGrath-Weaver) wouldn't have the WLC offering his services. I just wish I could talk to someone who has used him for their surgery. I mean the staff and facilities he uses are the exact same as Dr. Weaver's so the only difference is the person on the end of surgical tools. Am I crazy for even thinking about using Dr. Gibson? Should I wait for Dr. Weaver (whom EVERYONE I have talked to absolutely LOVES)????? Thanks for all of your opinions. I appreciate all of your posts and have learned sooooo much on this website. You all have inspired and educated me about this journey and I appreciate that.

3 Weeks Post OP and STARVING
mwinston2000 replied to Onederland2come's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unfortunately it's par for the course....... This is really the hardest time, need to eat mindfully, do the best you can until you are able to get a fill or 2 or 3, however many it takes. If you are hungry, eat (according to your doctors instructions first few weeks) the first 6 weeks is about healing, not weight loss. -
I literally can not imagine this procedure not working. Even if you ate ice cream and brownies all the time, it just makes no sense that having eliminated hunger along with eighty percent of your stomach you would not at least lose something. I think there are people who gain their weight back -- there is always a small rebound effect with extreme weight loss over time and it might be hard to keep off some of the creep. But there is just * no way* you can fail to become reasonably smaller than you are now. Of course it's going to work. Maybe there's the possibility of ultimately only losing sixty percent of your excess weight over time instead of a hundred, , but as far as it not working at all -- it's not possible.

I was banded on october 6th...including preop i have lost 26 lbs. Not bad...i went for my first fill 2 weeks ago and they said my port has flipped...I must have overdone it in the first few weeks and tore the stitches...so bk in for surgery this thursday...nothing but clear liquids after that! Outrageous Octobers 2010
Alijacmom replied to katiejane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I was banded on October 18th and as of today have lost about 40lbs. I had one fill dec. 9th. They started out by putting 4cc in my band but I could not swallow water. It actually got stuck in my chest. It was the weirdest feeling ever. She put me right back on the table and took out 1 1/2 cc. I now have 2 1/2 ccs and I feel good. I am thrilled with the weight loss but I do not feel major restriction. Will talk to the nutritionist next week and see if they will try another fill again. What I don't understand though is if I was unable to take the 4cc's initially what would be different that would allow me to take it now. I guess time will tell. Good luck all on this journey. I am happier then ever that I did it. I feel wonderful!! -
Outrageous Octobers 2010
Delilah replied to katiejane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, this is great information, I was Banded on Oct, 11th and have lost 26lbs. I have my first fill on Dec. 7th and was becoming a little concern because the weight loss has began to be a slow process. I often remind myself of the success I have obtain since being banded without any fills. I have restrictions most days where I fill full easily and some days it seems as if I can consume more than I should. I also had to start making better food choices. But, one of the greatest rewards has been when someone says you have lost a lot of weight, it regenerates my strength and courage to keep on keeping on in the right direction. -
Looking for some friends currently completing their 6 month physician supervised diet
Oopsseedaisy replied to Steph80's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Steph, I have UHC too and am on month 4 of the 6 month Physician supervised weight loss. My UHC has just recently added (for my insurance plan) a 6 month support group component, which I am now in month 2. I am not close enough yet to estimate a surgery date, but I imaging it will be near yours. -
Having same issue -- I am 8 months out. Generally this stuff happens from vitamin, water, and or protein deficiency. Tea tree oil did not work for me. Using head and shoulders and keep hair trimmed seems to be the option for me. But I have got to get back to taking my vitamins! I have a lot of hair and it is long so..so far I am the only one who notices.

A good friend suggested I post the following below so here I go. I've just celebrated my first 'bandiversary' and so you are aware, I was one of the ones who was not excited about starting my weight loss journey. I was nervous, anxious, fearful of failing, fearful of the future...basically a mess. I just wanted to say that that It just breaks my heart to read about others who struggle, who are fearful and question their decision to go ahead with WLS, and I just want them to know that we all understand the fears and anxiety but that given time, almost everyone will find success. Wishing you all well! Also...for those who like the visual, I've attached before and 'after' pics of myself. I put the after in quotes because I'm not finished...no one is finished with this journey..not until you're cold and in the ground but for our purposes..this is as good an after shot as required.

No matter what you need to get protien and water or you will lose muscle and hair. Working out to soon after surgery will not make things better your body needs to adjust. There is plenty of time to work out and when the weight is off the workout will get easier. Drink water work on protien and increase activity as you feel like and enjoy the ride.

On Friday I went in to see the doctor only to learn that I only had 2cc in band versus the 3cc they had been telling me I had. I have been struggling with weight loss - due impart to my own devices - and had become discouraged. Yet at that moment of learning about my band I asked myself "will you choose frustration or motivation?" With motivation I had so much more to gain - a renewed hope and kick (my doctor is the) ass attitude. It's all part of the journey... Realize that you are on a journey to higher consciousness & embrace it. Expand your awareness through meditation & contemplation. ~Deepak Chopra

Please tell me it gets better
JuneAct2 replied to koinoi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, it does get better. The next couple of months may be hard, but after 2 or 3 fills you'll notice you're not as hungry. For me it was gradual and the loss was kind of slow, but now I'm doing great. Right now I'm down 38 lbs. I've had 5 fills and this past month I lost 7 lbs. You are still healing so be patient with yourself, and do the best you can with your eating plan. Get some exercise, and be sure to drink plenty of water. The water helps ALOT with slowing the hunger. Wishing you all the best!
