  1. Funny... In my profession I work with a lot of people in recovery. Your posting reminded me of how sober people in recovery programs such as AA still refer to themselves as alcoholics. I think it is SO true of us too. we could be known as FF's FORMER FATTIES! LOL. All silliness aside, it's so true, there are issues we will be dealing with for the rest of our lives to maintain "sobriety" very similar to an alcoholic in sobriety. Those dealing with food addiction issues may benefit from the support Overeaters Anonymous (OA) can offer.
  2. You're intelligent, self-aware and you've done this before. You can do it again and be successful. I agree with the person who suggested going back to a week one diet. I'd suggest the pre-op diet. You need to eliminate carbs. Treat them like alcohol and you're an alcoholic. There's no such thing as "I'll just have one drink/chip/lb of pasta" for people like us. You made a powerful decision before and changed your life. You are STRONG. Every time you fall down, just get back up again. It's never the end. Nothing you've done is irreversible. You won't be perfect, but you can be *better. *
  3. Welcome back, stay and don't leave - even when you are back at the place you want to be. I'm 3 years post op, still not at the place I want to be weight wise, some gain too. I can see how alcohol can be the new 'friend' and I purposely keep an eye on that as there are others who have reported on here how so easily it replaced their friend food. What is your plan of attack, are you going to go Protein drinks for a few days, log using myfitnesspal, low carb, no alcohol? You have done this before and you know what works for you. I need this site, I lurk more than I post but I pick up valuable tips and advice and there is a group of people I can call on if I need help. There is the vets part of the site but I'm a bit unsure on what the conditions are for posting there. I think you have to be so many months post op and have a certain number of postings. Vets post there about their struggles and successes. Take it one day at a time, we can't change what we did yesterday, we don't know what is going to happen tomorrow but we can plan and alter things during today so that by the end of it we can say to ourselves "it might not be perfect but I tried my best".
  4. I was blessed to have people who supported (and paided) for me to get this tool...gastric sleeve in August 2009. I want to say it here and now, do not step away from this forum when you are feeling good and that all is done. Do not let the embarrassment, shame or even despair keep you away AND if you are new to the forum, please be aware it can happen and always, ALWAYS come back. So here is my deal, I have gained 57 lb. back...totally walked away thinking I've got this and then life continues to happen. I would occasionally come back to the forum; however, was embarrassed because there were discussions about putting 5 or even 10 lbs. back on which made me feel that I really really messed up and feeling like a major failure. So, this is my way of overcoming my first obstacle...my pride AND we all need to talk about the reality WHEN it happens. Now, I'm not saying it is going to happen to everyone...truly, I am only saying WHEN so for those of us it does happen to we have a place to come back and not be humiliated or called out. Does that make sense??? I use food to deal with stress, anxiety and all that other junk...LOL. I want to put a caution out there...I had the food sort of under control and then have come to the realization that alcohol was now my new friend and over a period of the last 3 years the weight started coming back on and then guess what, I noticed one day my eating habits were right back where I started. I am grateful for the ability to have an area to come and begin again. It is my hopes to not scare anyone, I'm not a negative nelly either! Most of my friends see me as being a very positive person and yes, that is pressure as well....LOL. Today, I am behaving like I had my surgery yesterday. I'm scared, cautious and freaked out about what I will put in my body...LOL. The beauty is I know I can do this...one sip at a time. Okay...enough for now, have tears streaming down my face, laughing and glad to be back here....

    Exercise and diet regimen

I was a BIG momma before my surgery journey. My surgeon does his sleeves outpatient for the most part (inpatient would have cost me another $5K and I did self pay) so he wanted me to lose quite a bit of weight before surgery. I cut out starch (no potatoes, no bread, no Pasta, no rice, no corn) , no dairy, no sugar, no alcohol or soda and no fast food. I ate mostly lean meat and green veggies. Hard boiled egg whites saved me when I was really hungry and just needed something to eat. One large egg white only has about 17 calories and 3g of Protein. I also would make a cabbage based Soup that had about 40 calories a cup that I'd eat. You can do it! Eat slow and and chew a lot because you'll need to get used to that for after surgery anyway.

    4 Month Check-in

I'm down 94lbs since surgery on 1/19/15 (3.5mo ago), and 152 since starting pre-op on 9/5/15 (9mo ago). I'm consistently eating between 800 and 1000 calories per day, with about 70-90g of Protein. My nut wants me to get up to 100g of protein per day. That's a struggle, just since I spend so much time eating now. I was VERY strict with myself on the pre-op diet, and I still freak out a little when I go over 1000 calories, but my nut says I'd have to eat 2300 to maintain, so stop stressing. My nut allows some carbs like brown rice, wheat bread, and potatoes in limited quantities. I feel MUCH better and I'm more productive at work when I include some of these in my diet once or twice a week. Alcohol is off the menu until next year, at least. I really really miss chewing gum and pineapple. Raw leafy greens are permitted but don't work for me at all. Everything else I've tried has been fine. I still puke from time to time from eating too fast or swallowing that last bite I was chewing when I feel the full feeling.

    4/28/15 had surgery

I had my sleeve done on 4/29. When he went in to do surgery, he found that a portion of my stomach was in my esophagus because my hiatal hernia was so big. Also, my liver was extremely large so he did a biopsy. My starting weight was 205, I don't drink alcohol so therefore I'm worried as to why my liver was so big. I have to say that the only protein drinks I like are the premier protein from Walmart. To me, the vanilla is the best. It's only been 3 days & I have to say this is the hardest thing I've ever done! I am trying to have a positive attitude about this but it's so hard, especially when people are bringing over dinner to my family & I'm over here chugging on a protein drink! Any suggestions?
  8. Has anyone had experience in dealing with Aetna with a BMI less than 40? My present BMI is 39. I have not been diagnosed with one of the co-morbidities listed for BMI 35-39 . I have just been diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and have a GGT level that is greater than twice the high normal limit. I have been overweight/obese most of my adult life. I do have documentation of pre-diabetes A1c levels in 2011, 2013 and 2014. In 2012, I had lost 50 lbs. doing a very low calorie medically supervised diet and all my lab work looked tremendously better. In 2012 my BMI placed me still overweight, but no longer obese. I have gained those 50lbs and 20 more. *sigh* I have changed my diet dramatically in the last 6 months with no change in weight. The NAFL (non-alcoholic fatty liver), puts me at greater risk for cardiac disease, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes etc. One of the symptoms of a high GGT, and actually one of the reasons I went into the Dr, was fatigue. I wake up tired and spend my day fighting the fatigue. I try to get out and walk our neighborhood, but some days that is very difficult due to the fatigue. My physician, after going over my history, has recommended bariatric surgery. There is no cure for NAFL, but studies have shown that weight loss has a dramatic effect on it as well as on the GGT level. I feel stuck in the middle of no man’s land. I don’t weigh enough to qualify for morbidly obese – need approx. 12 more lbs. for that. I don’t have one of the listed co-morbidities Aetna states I need to have, but I do have all the “pre” lab work and risks for several of the co-morbidities. To me it would seem to make sense to allow me to have the surgery before I have permanent liver damage and all the health complications that are going to be much more costly in the end.

    4 Month Check-in

I'm curious how everyone is doing 4 months out. I was sleeved on 1/2. Down 48 pounds. SW: 245, CW: 198. My weight loss has been slower than I expected, but I'm still happy I made the decision and am pretty steadily losing. I'm able to tolerate most foods. Still haven't added back bread, rice, pasta, raw veggies/fruit, steak, pork chops or alcohol per doctors orders. I'm sooooo ready for a salad and some sushi rolls! I'm also not feeling hungry yet which is great! How is it going for others at the 4 month mark?
  10. I had a single glass of wine ???? at 4 weeks while on a date night with my husband. I sipped on it for an hour and enjoyed it immensely. I have no intention of giving up alcohol completely, but I have greatly reduced my intake. No more drinking during the week or even every weekend. In social situations only, which isn't that often.

    When can I drink Alcohol?

@@judyoz careful! Alcohol is drinking your calories. Your surgeon or dietitian should've gone over that with you. Abstaining from alcohol is a small price for getting thin and healthy.
  12. How long did you wait until you tried any type of alcohol? I love a glass of wine or mixed drink every so often. I know it will be absorbed more quickly and I will have to watch for that.

    May Sleevers...where are you?

Just my opinion, but I would say stay away from it...alcohol has lots of sugar in it...but have fun!
  14. I was wanting to know how people go out to eat? I am going out tonight with a friend and I'd like to have a drink and dinner but I get FULL.
  15. Some people have an actual addiction to food, like alcohol or heroin. The problem is you still need food. There are nutritionists as well as therapists that specialize in eating disorders. I hope they are near you. Please don't sabotage yourself. You are worth this life change!

Band to Sleeve - NO REGRETS! LOL

Your story sounds so much like mine. Was even born a big baby, and overweight as a child, but not obese until I got into college (which also happens to be when they finally tested me for hypothyroidism and reluctantly started to treat me for it). I was really active in high school - lettered in two sports - and as much as I walked in college, the cafeteria food did me no favors! Bad eating, a decrease in intense physical activity, the alcohol that frequently accompanies college days, and hypothyroidism led to a 50 lbs weight gain in less than two years. I just had my endoscopy today, no abnormalities found, so I'm excited for my sleeve date of May 12. I, too, had some initial good results with the Band, but slowly gained back a bit over time and then it just seemed to be rejected by my body.

When can I have wine? Lol

There are plenty of threads on here that talk about this...the soonest in I've seen is 8 weeks with doctor's permission for a special occasion. I am curious as well. What I am interested in is - aside from the accelerated affect of alcohol - what are the true risks? The things I have seen alluded to - by my interpretation- and I am not 100% sure is 1) the stomach itself remains swollen for 4-5 weeks? 2) subjecting the stomach to anything so harsh so early is a risk of ulcer? 3) Of course, extra un needed calories as well as poor decision making I would love to hear the specifics- I always operate better with the facts. I have decided to wait at least 8 weeks and to discuss it with my doctor before doing anything. I do know there are people who enjoy drinks every week on here - and I have a regular night out that I would like a glass of wine also- but for now tea, decaf lattes, etc are doing just fine for me.

@@kbmerritt84, congratulations on getting a date for your surgery! I hope all goes well. @@Tiana Harris, Most insurance companies require some type of supervised diet. Mine required 6 months and by the time I got through all of the approvals and what not it was 9 months later. The good news about that is there has to be some good habits built in order to be successful. I used that time to change a lot about my eating and exercise habits. Although I only lost about 13 lbs during that period, I feel like I am better off now because of it. You have to learn to: 1. Chew your food like crazy 2. Eat at the table and not in front of the TV 3. Get up and get moving as much as possible 4. Don't drink 30 minutes before and after your meals 5. if you need a therapists help to deal with any food addiction issues, use this time 6. Cut out all Alcohol, Soda and Cigarettes if you use them. Thankfully I did not have to do this because I don't do any of these things currently. One every 4 to 6 months I would have a cocktail with my stepdad but I only saw him very infrequently so this was not a problem for me. Getting ready is a lot of work and I have learned that slow and steady wins the race! Good luck!

    Protein Bars

I love the Quest bars ( but only some flavors). My faves are Cookies and Cream, vanilla Almond and Double chocolate Chunk after trying them all. Pure Protein are okay but not as good. You have to watch fat, sugar and sugar alcohols when choosing.

10 Day CHALLENGE to get back on track!

Hello, Longtime and All - glad everyone seems to be doing reasonably well! I'm so impressed at all these people doing circuit training & cross fit! I try to get 11,000 steps most days, but I know I need to do some strength training, too. Longtme, I know what you mean about being afraid to get on the scale... along the opposite lines, it is so heartening to see a couple of pounds of Water (or whatever) go away quickly... makes me want to "keep going" and "not ruin it" by eating off plan. I am 51 now and MAN -- between that and my sleeve being nearly 18 months old-- I just don't lose in a fun, gratifying way the way I used to (if I had eaten this virtuously 15 years ago, the pounds would be MELTING off me :/!).I have 10-11 days uintil I have to weigh in on my DietBet (from DietBet.com) -- I'll need to get 3 to 3.5 pounds off by then, so the pressure is definitely on to NOT mess up . Even though the scale is merely INCHING down, I do see a WAY less pronounced muffin top hanging around when I force myself to wear tight-waisted pants (not MOM jeans, lol, but rather pants with no stretch or "give" at the waist). Last, I am low-carbing (trying to stay in mild ketosis) and my vice/downfall seems to be Atkins Peanutbutter chocolate "meal" bars. I've learned not to have them in the house because I will decide they are a good option for a late night snack here and there, which is absolutely NOT true since they have carbs from sugar alcohol and it's debatable whether or not they knock me out of ketosis. Best to all! xo RHW

    communion...

Not catholic (Lutheran) but I took communion (bread and wine) 2 weeks post op and every week since. Never had a problem or a hiccup. I asked my NUT before and she just said start slow and be mindful of how i felt. The first 4 weeks I just took a sip of the wine, I didn't drink the whole little cup. And I kept the bread in my mouth till it mostly dissolved or I just kept chewing it even after I sat down (we typically don't do wafers). I am 3 moths out and I don't even blink with either now. That is the only alcohol I have done and it is SUCH a small amount that it has no impact. And that is the only bread I have as well. I was afraid I would have to do the gluten free wafer - but I seem to tolerate the homemade bread okay. Again, they are such small amounts. Good Luck!

    Random every day questions/thoughts.

Why do we drive on parkway but park on driveways? If 7-11 is open 24-7 why are there locks on the doors? If you are not supposed to smoke at a gas station, why do they sell cigarettes? Why do states that only allow you to buy alcohol in state stores, sell mixers in the grocery stores?
  23. Goodbye Taco Tuesday.... Hello tighter tummy! (Hopefully!) hello all, my name is Cassandra... I'm 9 days from my gastric sleeve surgery and getting very excited! I have always been the girl with the "pretty face" and always have been big! I think the last time I remember not being the biggest girl in class or the biggest girl on my softball team was probably when I was 8-10 years old! People always referred to me as "curvy" or "thick" growing up but in my head I always knew they were just being nice! I played college softball and have always been very athletic... But as I get older I just have continued to get bigger. I have tried all the yo-yo diets and that's exactly what they were! After having my son 3.5 years ago, I never lost all my pregnancy weight (80 pounds) and just have always been ashamed and embarrassed! I have thought about WLS for years but have known 2 people who had gastric bypass, got thin, and became alcoholics..... I didn't want anything like that to happen to me, so I decided WLS was not for me. Not that I'm a huge drinker, but I do drink socially. However, my son was diagnosed with autism and is VERY energetic... I am a single mom and keeping up with him is hard. He is diagnosed as severely autistic & the reality of the situation is that he may always need care, even as an adult. This was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back for me, I needed to get healthy to make sure my son was never alone ! Of course there are plenty of other reasons, in fact I wrote out a list of 32 reasons tonight so if I have bad days after surgery I have something to remind me why I started this journey! The various forums have helped me immensely and all of you seem like such great inspirational people! I'm looking forward to the journey and to talking with you all about my experiences in the future! For now, I'm doing the countdown as if I were going to Disneyland (and could Fit on all the rides!)
  24. Reaching the 100 day mark later this week as well as 14 weeks/3 months post op. How do I feel? Amazing.....really more than amazing, what have I learned so far If you have seen my other posts every week is a different thing I am learning.... I know now that I can eat at restaurants, go on a cruise and lose 3 pounds, and so much more I have been very lucky... no complications, or discomforts since my Jan 20th surgery date. I have however stuck religiously to the food plan, have had NO alcohol at all either. Amazingly I have been eating well enough that supplement shakes have not been needed....my secret? cottage cheese! It is packed with so much Protein that (2) 1/2 cup servings of fat free cottage cheese will give you 30g of protein (well on your way to the 60-80 needed every day.) The three month checkup. I did really well! My bloodwork came back all in range including my Calcium, levels of D etc. Actually my B 12 was very high. I have been drinking enhanced H20 Vitamin waters (Adirondack) that have b-12 included in them and along with my supplement daily ....I can now skip the b-12 twice a week. total weight loss since surgery 52 lbs total weight loss since beginning the program 60 lbs Clothing before-> 40 waist XXL shirt now-> 36 waist L shirt. I have been eating just about anything I want. Staying away from fried foods, Pasta, and the like. Haven't had any foods disagree with me yet. just started an occasional 1/2 sandwich....with no problems. Learning that at restaurants... I have to immediately decide what I am eating on my plate and what is going home for later. It really helps keep my portion in focus. If not It can lead to picking at the food a little here and there until I might get sick. I also encourage others to try some of my food.... 100 days later and I feel 10 years younger!

    New "addiction"?

Ahhh…the replacement addiction! Looks like shopping is pretty popular around…and that’s great choice compared to alternatives like alcohol and smoking! I’m solidly in the “loves working out” crowd of WLS’ers. I love how many of you combine shopping with working out as an addiction – buying new workout clothes and looking good in them! Personally, I’m not really one for shopping. I’d have to say my replacement addiction for food is life. It meets the requirements…I chase it until I overdose on it. I love it and since getting the lap-band, I just keep going whether it’s with BariatricPal or working out or taking care of my kids. I let life run me into the ground before I stop, so I guess it counts as an addiction. A great one, though!
