Minimum protein amount recommended?
RickM replied to ctsleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If this is a lactose intolerance problem, which is not uncommon post-op, then whey Protein isolate can be used as it has had the lactose filtered out of it as part of the process. Isolate is expensive, so the cheaper Protein drinks are usually blend of cheaper whey concentrates, isolate and other sources. Yogurt also has had most, if not all, of the lactose consumed in the fermentation process, and many cheeses are very low in lactose. One can also take :Lactaid tablets just prior to consuming dairy with lactose in it. On the minimum amount of protein required, that is largely dependent upon lean body mass. A small, light (will be light!) woman who may end up with a healthy weight in the 100-110 lb range will need somewhere in that 55-60 g range while a fairly muscular man may require 100g or more to maintain their lean body mass. Inclination towards increasing muscle mass or healing from major trauma can add 50% to those figures. -

Help! STARVING on pre-op diet!
BostonPA replied to BostonPA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do feel guilty! But I'm back on the wagon today. I'm using Carnation Instant Breakfast and I add a scoop of whey Protein powder. It's actually delicious! I think I had not been drinking enough of them, though, so I was so hungry! Two days will be no problem! It is hard, but you can totally do it! Just be really mindful, and get out of the house as much as you can to distract yourself! That is exactly what I am looking forward to! I can have fat-free yogurt and fat-free cottage cheese. I add a teaspoon of sugar-free fruit preserve to the cottage cheese to make it a bit more palatable. -
Still weigh more than surgery day!
Soapandcandlequeen replied to valcatlett4's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yeah I think in the beginning I had greek yogurt and then cut it out too. I do keep a little to mix with my tuna though instead of mayo. This is just my experience but I have tried lower carbs and tried upping carbs trying to break a stall and I will say that lowering the carbs did work. Not sure if it's coincidence or it really does work. I am just starting my 8th week So it really is trial and error and learning from those that are farther out. -
I am 5 days post op and I still weigh more than the day of surgery. I have had no trouble getting my fluids or protein in. I have had minimal pain and feel pretty good. I can not tell if I am full. I've had a full carton of yogurt that ended with a runny nose but I did not feel full. Help !!

Is your stage 3 pureed or soft foods? I actually bought a baby food maker. It was a life saver. But you don't need one, a blender works just fine! If it's pureed and you're craving something savory, you can put boiled or baked chicken in the blender, then mix it into 1/3 cup of the 98% fat-free cream of chicken. Two ounces of well-drained tuna with 2 tbsps of light mayo tastes really good, just be sure to over mix it so all the little chunks work themselves out. You can try canned chili and blend it even more than it already is. Canned beans can be mashed up and seasoned any way you like if you need to add fiber to your diet. For sweet foods, there's of course SF pudding, SF rice pudding, SF tapioca, low cal/low carb yogurt (Greek is the healthiest), and oatmeal sweetened with Stevia and cinnamon. I would make the oatmeal with water then add 3 tbsps of caramel-flavored whey protein shake (Premier Protein brand taste the best to me) that way, I was getting fiber and protein to make up for the high carb count. If your stage 3 is soft foods, you can try salmon or baked fish. For me the difference between pureed and soft foods was minimal because of what I liked to eat. Tuna is a staple for me. Except now I can eat it with some Quest cheddar crackers.

New Anti-Depressant Medication Effect Pouch?
HappyHomeCC replied to McSteph100's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not been banded yet but I am concerned about stuff I am taking, I am taking capsules of prilosec and they kill me when they open up inside my stomach... caplets are easier on me. It says on my pharmacy paper I can open them up onto a soft food but not chew, so I am thinking, yogurt may be the best choice. I am also taking zoloft as of 10 days ago. 50mg I didn't like how I was feeling 6 or 7 days in so I have been breaking them in half vs taking a whole one...... Dr thinks my anxiety issues are creating the acid situation. This is all new to me. Only about 5 weeks ago. My preop endoscopy did not show any thing unusual and the h-pylori was neg. -

Hi everyone, I'm having my bypass next Wednesday, 7/22. I was calm for the most part until the past few days, when I started getting nervous, but that was the nervous that I'm assuming everyone feels when surgery gets close. For some background, I'm 22 years old, 5'1, and started working towards surgery in October of last year at 260 pounds. As of today, I'm 50 pounds down, and that's of course on my own, before having surgery. Yesterday, I started having serious second thoughts. These normal nervous thoughts had me wondering if I could do it on my own since I've been able to lose 50 pounds by myself before surgery, and I keep telling myself I worked hard for this, and surgery is right around the corner, and if I didn't think I needed it, I wouldn't have started the program in the first place. Like I said, I was calm until a few days ago, but yesterday it really started hitting me. I started getting the feeling that I'll be unsuccessful with the surgery. Most, if not all, programs require a high-protein diet after surgery, including my own program. My issue is, I'm an extremely picky eater. I'm a vegetarian, and while I'm not totally vegan since I'll eat products containing milk and eggs, I prefer not to eat (or drink) those things if I can avoid it. So aside from not eating meat, I don't eat cheese or regular eggs prepared in any way (if I try I will not be able to stomach it). I also am grossed out by tofu. This honestly leaves my only options for protein for the rest of my life to be protein drinks and yogurt (which I would prefer not to eat all the time, it's not my favorite thing). My nutritionist said lentils and beans are ok, but they have a lot of starch so to eat other things if I can. I'm on my pre-op diet so that means I'm stuck on my protein drinks and yogurt for now, and after talking with my nutritionist a few times yesterday, the nerves I was already feeling worsened, and I started having normal doubts to real second thoughts. I was wondering if I'm actually cut out for this kind of surgery since I know I can't keep up with the protein that I'm being asked to eat, and I'm not sure I can compromise since I already know I won't be able to handle things like eggs, cheese, and tofu. If this kind of thing relies on me eating protein all the time, what kind of success can I have if I'm not able to do that? Yes, it'll physically restrict me from overeating, at least for the first year or two, but I'm afraid of a stall after only losing a small amount, or regaining the weight and having gone through all of it for nothing. I'm also thinking how if I lost 50 lbs on my own, I could try to lose the other 100 lbs on my own too, even if it's not the rapid weight loss that the bypass would give me. Like I noted earlier, though, I wouldn't have started this program in the first place if I didn't feel like I needed to go through it and wouldn't have worked so hard to make sure it happens. I'm 22 years old, should I wait a couple of years since I'm having these thoughts and try things out on my own and see how things go with that? Or should I go through with surgery next week? I have no idea between my doubts and the hard work I went through.

I don't mind Egg Beaters too much. I usually add some picante sauce (Texas girl here!) and/or a little sprinkle of low-fat cheese and/or some chopped onions & bell peppers. I do everything possible to avoid the Protein shakes - they are just too think now - ick!!!. I sometimes add 1/4 scoop unflavored Protein powder to yogurt or cottage cheese. I also drink a clear Protein Drink daily (I like the ones by Cytosport - whey Isolate Protein Drink - 130 calories, 32 gr protein and only 1 little carb). My goal is 60-80 gr Protein so this gets me 1/2 way there and gives me 17 oz fluids (actually 34 oz since I pour 1/2 of the drink into an empty bottle and fill both with ice & Water - sip these throughout the day). Of couse have an additional bottle of water & something else to get in the 60+ oz (man, somedays that's hard!).

How many ounces should I be eating?
Lulu_RNY posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone!! I’m 6 months post op this 23rd and have lost 107 lbs since surgery! I’m ecstatic for my progress so far and need to lose about 40 more to be at my goal weight (fingers crossed). But lately I’ve been seeing myself being able to eat more that usual. I’ve went from 2-3 ounces to eat 4-5 ounces of food. Most of the time it consists of a good diet such as chicken salads or eggs, sausage , yogurt fruit and etc and I do keep up with my fluids. I just want to know if it’s normal to be eating this amount at 6 months post op? Also I don’t eat any carbs if it isn’t a pretzel here and there. I just want to be consistent and I’m scared that I maybe eating too much and my pouch has stretched !!! Any advice is appreciated Here’s a before and after pic!!! -
September Sleevers- How are you feeling??
PepperCat replied to Ash_Bri85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
11 days post op and I’m worried this tool isn’t going to work for me. I can literally eat as much as I want of full liquids and some puréed and soups. Today after two bowls and a cup of soup and two yogurts I finally started to feel over stuffed. I don’t understand why this is happening other people I know can only eat a couple ounces at a time! I can drink a ton of liquid too. I’m so worried that this isn’t going to help me enough. I was banking on not being able to eat. -

I’m now 6 days post op and since my last post, I’m still doing fine though I’m nervous about the number of protein shakes I need to have beginning tomorrow. I’m only having 1 per day right now and while I’m getting through it ok, I’m not looking forward to having more throughout the days ahead. I’m thinking I’ll sub in the Greek yogurt that’s on the approved list. I’m surprised I’m not really hungry, but I have waves. I’ve been able to prepare things for my kids. I did order them a pizza on Thursday while my husband was golfing. I really wanted a taste, but that was all. (And no, I didn’t follow through with it!) I also went to work for a few hours on Thursday and that went well though I was tired. My husband I went to Costco this AM and it was good. He got a smoothie at the food court and I had a small sip - wish I could have had a taste of pizza. Apparently pizza is my weakness! [emoji23] -
Doesn't negate your statement that the body can only process a certain amount of Protein at once Debora I eat a lot of lean protein, fish, chicken, turkey etc. cheese has a lot of protein as do foods like fat free ricotta, fat free cream cheese, greek/fage yogurt, etc. I generally eat no less than 130g of protein per day.

Foods you can't tolerate since surgery
McButterpants replied to kmiller13137's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Plain Water - have no idea why, but it's like swallowing liquid sandpaper. Greek yogurt - I wasn't a huge fan prior to surgery, but I can't stand the texture. I can have a dollop, like on top of my Mexican bake instead of sour cream, but to eat a sweet Greek Yogurt out of the container, I can't do it. Other than that, I have been able to tolerate anything I've thrown at my sleeve. -
Need some mushie ideas....please
StaceyM replied to mama59's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is the list of foods my dietician gave me that I can eat during my "mushy phase". It includes ALL foods that I'm allowed to eat, not just mushies. Scrambled egg Low-fat cheese Creamy Peanut Butter Blended fruit (phase 1 and 2 baby food) Mashed potatoes Light yogurt Skim milk Cream of vegetable soup (ie: cream of potato, cream of broccoli, etc...) No sugar added Carnation Instant Breakfast (I've found this the best thing to add unjury to) vanilla yogurt made with Splenda sugar free pudding Sugar free Jello Sugar free popsicles -
I'm doing my count down diet before surgery on the 17th. I've been eating lots of premier protein, Greek yogurt, and chicken. I have a bad habit of slacking off on my water intake during my days off and it really bit me in the ass this week. I've been consuming quite a bit more protein and have taken out juice and milk as sources of fluid to drink. On top of that, I have been trying to stop drinking when I eat. Gave myself a kidney stone that felt like the worst thing ever. Hopefully, since I'm 92oz deep in water consumption today and still going, my symptoms will clear and the stone will pass quickly. I have 8 days left till the surgery and I can't stop the swirl of information clouding my thoughts and making me space out. I've never had a anything more than a dental surgery before. I find this twilight exciting and confusing. I've rifled through youtube once again, looking at more and more videos of people who got their surgery and what they have dealt with. I keep wanting to take pictures of my facial hair to compare before and after but I can't stand the feeling of it. It drives me crazy. I hate it. I'm making one last attempt to let it grow a few days before surgery, but I won't place an expectation on myself that I'm not sure I can comfortably meet. It's so upsetting to me. I hate PCOS. I can't wait to have this tool to help change my life. When I get nervous, I just think about how happy I was when I was on the Ideal Protein diet and got down to 170. I was so hungry and dizzy all the time, but I was just so happy to be back in my old clothes again. Like I could just taste the hope every day was saturated in. I want to do this. I want to feel like myself again. If I need surgeries afterwards for loose skin, I don't care. I just want to get back to my life.

September Sleevers- How are you feeling??

Was sleeved on 9/14. Day four post op here and I am starving. Can drink with no problems, loving the premier protein waters. I have had broth and yogurt today. Averaging about 250 calories a day. I am just praying this feeling of hunger goes away! Not much pain at all, but the roof of my mouth has been sore every since coming home from the hospital. Anyone use sugar free candy to help with hunger? Day of preop diet start. 253 SW 236 CW 233 -

I was sleeved on 9/12. I have been doing well. I'm supposed to be on liquids, but I was feeling extremely weak, so I had some cream of wheat. I'm not having any issues getting foods down, and I don't feel sick afterwards, I have been loosing weight since surgery I lost 4lbs, bc the gas had to leave my system. With preop diet and surgery thus far I've lost 18 lbs. I'm not upset at how my weight is dropping I just want to work out honestly. I try to walk a lot during the day bc I love to exercise. I'm sure my doc will be mad that I advanced myself on soft foods 1 week early, but I need the energy. I go back to work tomorrow and everything has healed well for me. I'll try to eat healthier soft foods like non fat Greek yogurt tomorrow. But as for now all is well. I'm a very active person so I want to make sure that my metabolism can keep up with me. My stats are below. First visit: 245 lbs Before preop diet: 236 lbs After preop: 225 lbs Cw: 218 lbs -

Hi everyone! I had my surgery 9/15, and feel GREAT! I am down 29 lbs since I started my pre-op diet on 9/1. I am on Day 2 of Phase 2, so I've been eating non-fat cottage cheese, non-fat greek yogurt, sugar free pudding, protein shakes and strained low fat "cream of" soups. No complaints other than some constipation that I hope to resolve sooner rather than later. I hope you all have a quick and speedy recovery -
Body Fortress at WalMart. Whey protein 30g of protein, 8g of carbs and very affordable. $17.00 for 2lb tub. Isolate protein 30g of protein, 2g of carbs, $19.00 for 2lb tub. I mixed it with almond milk for pre op diet and now I mix with water post op. I've also added to pudding mix and yogurt. Tastes really good. So far have tried Vanilla and PB and Chocolate. Yet to try Strawberry, Chocolate and Cookies & Cream.
