Why are diets so different?
Meryline replied to Neens's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Berry78 yeah, we transitioned through the stages in 4 days. Of course everything had to be chewed to puree, and we had several restrictions, I was eating cheese, yogurt, and a few other things. Just because I was allowed, didn't mean I did. I eat mostly cheese, yogurt and protein shakes. But also some fish and chicken. I have heard that sleeve feel a lot more restriction than bypass -
I had my gastric bypass on July 17 had a complication while in the hospital so had a revision. So I am a little over 3 months post op and its been an on & off battle. I am glad & blessed to have the surgery & should of had it years ago. So I dont regret this blessing. I am struggling with gallbladder issues. My gallbladder has a mind of its own. Sometimes it is active and painful after drinking cold water sometimes its not. I still cannot eat solid protein like chicken, turkey or beef. I tried and tried and still either my stomach does not like it or my gallbladder doesnt like it. So I am back on premier protein, natural cheese and recently added lima beans, red kidney beans and black beans. I am also eating activia yogurt. I had a constipation problem and found that lima beans have resolved my constipation issue and so my bowel movements are so so much better. I dont even have to use suppositories or benefiber. Lima beans have taken their place! I had three ultrasounds on my stomach. Visually they only see sludge near my gallbladder. So the next test will be a hydroscan that will actually check the function of my gallbladder. I just have to wait till my next appointment(3 month followup) hopefully he will feel sorry enough for me to order it. Both my surgeon and my primary suspect that this next test will reveal more than just the visual ultrasound. So I am hanging in there with my lima beans and cheese and activia. My gallbladder wakes me up at night sometimes when my bladder is full. Weird. I have I.:'(interstitial cystitis) a bladder defect problem also inflammation. So it seems when my gallbladder is active it aggrevates my I.C. Geezz.. I am having so much fun with my gallbladder causing me problems and pain I guess that means I want more problems. Lol But still the surgery is a blessing to me and I am so happy I got it done! The problems I am having never outweigh the benefits I will continue to have from this surgery. I love the fact I can only eat so much. I love the restriction! I understand that later on in this process I may be able to eat more but I am eating healthier now... And I love it. I have gone 15 days without meat. Even though chicken, turkey and beef are good proteins I still feel great even though I cannot eat them. It is a process. It took me 2 months to understand my new stomach. I am taking my supplements everyday and set aside a monthly budget for them. Things are great. I look forward to reaching my goal even if it takes me longer than I planned. As long as you move forward in making healthy choices. God has given me strength and I will continue to lean on him for strength. God loves me God loves you. God bless you. Stay strong in him. Kisses

It depends on what you do. I have a desk job. I brought my insulated lunch box with my shakes inside and my yogurt. I had plenty of access to water. I brought in packets of Crystal Light type stuff. I was back at work 6 days after surgery. One day I treated myself to egg drop soup - but the sodium content messed with me. Wasn't really an issue, but I don't know what you do.

Today I talked to my surgeon's office - making sure they're receiving all the reports and clearances from my other various doctors/tests. Some came to them - others did not. I will need to chase down the EKG/release from the cardiologist, and the report/release from the pulmonologist, and my pap smear results. I have my Upper GI scheduled, and I'll need that report to get over to the surgeon afterward, too. Then I'll need to make an appointment to see my primary care physician, and get his clearance/release for the surgery. After that, my surgeon's office submits all the data over to the insurance company. It takes them a good 7 business days to give an approval for the surgery or ask for more information. Once that approval comes through, we set a surgery date, and then I see the surgeon 1-2 weeks before the surgery, for a pre-op appointment. I'll receive all sorts of info at that appointment - the pre-op diet, the post-op short-term diet, and this doctor's particular diet. I've been told by this surgeon that he doesn't want any of his patients to follow any other instructions other than his own. And they won't give me any of the diets until that pre-op visit. Because it's "too overwhelming". But well, I'm not sure how you're supposed to decide if you want to commit to something fully for the rest of the forseeable future when you don't know what you're committing to, ya know? But it sort of doesn't matter - I'm done with this lifestyle and the resulting body. I did look up the post-op diet for a lap band online: Days 1-4: Clear Liquids only! Days 5-14: Full Liquids only. Day 15-29: Soft mushy phase. These are foods that you could chew if you didn’t have teeth. Day 30: Back to a regular diet. This includes solid foods! Then I looked up what the "Lap-Band Diet" looks like - just to get SOME idea of what my future looks like: low-fat proteins (lean meats, fish, skinless poultry, eggs) fruits and vegetables healthy, whole-grain breads and cereals dairy products (good source of calcium, but choose non-fat or low-fat) heart-healthy fats It doesn't sound like a blast, but it does sound like what any person wanting to lose weight SHOULD be eating. So that's okay. Some high-protein foods (protein content and serving size): Lean red meat, fish, poultry (21 grams per 3 ounces) Cottage cheese, low-fat (15 grams per half cup) Tofu (9 grams per 4 ounces) Beans & peas (8 grams per half cup) Yogurt, regular, low or non-fat (7 grams per 6 ounces) Yogurt, Greek, low or non-fat (17 grams per 6 ounces) Eggs (6 grams per large egg) Oats (3 grams per half cup) Non-starchy vegetables (tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers) (2 grams per half cup cooked) The diet should include a variety of protein sources to provide the body with a balanced intake of nutrients. Planning high-protein meals is a priority. Many LAP-BAND patients continue to use liquid protein supplements (12-15 grams of protein per packet, on average) in their daily diet as a balanced source of protein and nutrients. Other things I found: Eat only three small meals a day - this is all you need. Do not snack between meals. Eat only solid foods at mealtime - this is how the LAP-BAND® works to restrict food. Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly, about 15-20 times a bite, until it reaches a liquid consistency - this will help to create the feeling of fullness and make it less likely for food to get stuck in the new stomach pouch. Stop eating when you feel full - eating too much can result in pain, nausea and vomiting. It can also stretch the new stomach pouch. Choose healthy foods - make sure you are getting enough protein and nutrients. Do not drink while you eat - this will wash down the food and you will not reach the feeling of fullness, defeating the purpose of the LAP-BAND®. Do not drink for 30 to 45 minutes before or after meals. It is important to drink plenty of fluids during the day in order to stay hydrated and replace the fluid that is lost due to weight loss. If you become dehydrated you may experience a loss of energy, lightheadedness, dry skin, and nausea. You should choose low-calorie liquids and try to drink about 6 - 8 cups of fluid a day Water is a good choice, but other drink options include low-calorie, non-carbonated liquids, such as artificially flavored drinks, broth, tea, and black coffee (without sugar). Avoid drinking fluids within 30-45 minutes of a meal. You do not want to drink before, as it will fill up your pouch with liquids and not leave room for food. You do not want to drink too soon after a meal, because the liquids will move food through your LAP-BAND® pouch too quickly. I can't imagine my surgeon's diet plan is going to look TOO different from the above. It's not like he's going to deter me from eating high-protein, low-fat foods. Or tell me to drink high calorie or carbonated beverages. Lol. He may be no carb, though? God I hope not. I crave those like nobody's business. But, it'll be whatever it is. And I'll just need to be fine with that. In the meantime, I'm going to have to start looking up ways to start shopping, meal planning and cooking the new way. At least I have a starting point now. I'm satisfied with today's answers.

I had VSG done 10/16. My SW was 283.1 and yesterday I weighed at 266.6. I’ve been getting my fluids and protein daily, and moving around as much as possible. Finally feeling normal with no head fog, etc. incision sites are almost healing, the larger one has a bit to go, and still some bruising, but can sleep on my sides and almost my stomach. Just trying to find some variety of full liquids between yogurt, soups, shakes, etc. You guys will do amazing, just stick the course. Walk as much as you can post op, but also listen to your body. Hydration is key.

1 week post op
Nancy MBGC replied to sweetsleeveday's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
5 days clear liquid and 5 weeks full liquid. I do yogurt besides my crystal light. It's not easy, in fact it's very hard, but the stomach is new and healing. It's probably important for it to heal properly. I'd be afraid to try anything solid. The strained or blended to smooth soup is something I haven't tried just because it sounds gross to me. I also sleeved on 10/17! -

You have a point, but the carbs in yogurt are not derived from white flour... Some people are more carb-sensitive than others. The original poster stated she's only lost 2 pounds since surgery. Perhaps removing crackers from the diet may help. That's all. -

1 week post op
Katherella replied to sweetsleeveday's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have struggled with that since the 3rd day of the pre surgery diet I had my surgery October 17th and hardly have eaten anything since. A little broth, some jello and water. I have lost 21 pounds but not the healthy way. My skin looks aged and dimpled I do not like any milk or milky type products. No yogurt I have texture issues as well. Today I decided to try some things that were not on my list. First, oatmeal with unflavored protein powder. Got a few bites of that down. Will work on it again tomorrow. Instead of eating plain broth I made my own in the crockpot. Put some meat and veggies and cooked them until falling apart. Put it in the blender and pulverized it. I put protein powder in with it and had success eating it. Maybe 5 baby spoon bites. What a difference in my energy level !!! -
Cream Soups on full liquid post-op
Rose400491 posted a topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Hello! I’m currently one week post-op for my gastric sleeve. I’m back on full liquids for another 2 weeks. My nutritionist and dietitian said I’m able to have high protein soups AND/OR “Low Fat cream soups reconstituted with milk” I’m one week post op and I’ve only been drinking water and protein since surgery so no yogurt or jello (which I’m able to have but that’s all I ate pre-op I can’t stomach it anymore) I’ve seen a lot of people on here suggest, low sodium, low fat cream of chicken or mushroom then adding skim milk to it. With this restriction what’s the best thing to eat for soups?? -

Vegan foods for days 3-8 after surgery?
kidchick replied to TurtleGirl's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
I use Arbonne's protein shake mix - it's 100% Vegan and it's really good. Google Arbonne for someone close to you that sells it and they would be happy to give you a couple samples to try before you buy. Also, this is a bit pricy but so worth it when you don't have alot of options - Ruby Rockets sells Vegan pops and yogurt made with fruit and veggies. They even have a chocolate one. So good. https://www.rubyrockets.com/collections/all -
What’s your favorite thing to eat on your puréed diet?
Rose400491 replied to Rose400491's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I’m not big on cottage cheese but the Greek yogurt with fruit or goodies you dump in are really good! -
It's not excruciating, more like a dull stomachache most of the time. Unless it's a protein shake or yogurt, it hurts after I eat. And I eat SLOW. And chew like a cow with cud. Plain water still hurts as well, even a sip. Is this normal? I'm happy with my loss, but so tired of hurting all the time.

Had my sleeve one week ago today and feel great. Each day is getting better. I have no problems getting my fluids in, and mixing up my full fluids to keep it interesting with creamed Soups, yogurt, etc. Protein Shakes are getting easier to tolerate each day as well. On day of surgery, I was 283.1, and this morning I was 266.6! Looking forward to continuing the journey -

Hi all, First let me say this forum is the absolute best. It's really the extra support that I need. I am 8 days post op and starting to feel like myself again. The discomfort from gas is still there but nothing like a week ago. I'm learning how to get my 64 ounces of protein in and becoming quite creative with my meals (I mix crystal light in my plain Greek yogurt, yum). Can't wait to begin soft solids because then all my protein will come from food. My doctor completed my disability paperwork for up to 6 weeks. I was shocked, especially because I hear of people going back to work after a week. How long have others stayed out? I was thinking 3 weeks but don't want to stall my weight loss by sitting in the house. Best of luck to everyone. SW:311 CW:TBD GW:220 Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

What has been your biggest challenges and successes
kandywolf replied to eden30's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The sipping in super hard. I am on my 7th day out. Also nothing cold. If I forget to warm it in my mouth before swallowing, it hurts. But I love ice cold! Besides the warming in my mouth, I noticed I really have to take my time, even eating yogurt. I thought about using a baby spoon. I have always been a guzzler for drinking, and a shoveler for eating. I have to be very careful and very vigilant on my drinking and eating, and try to slow down . -
Let's Play Another Round of "How I Get My Protein" post WLS

Let's see. I'm 7 months post op, my NUT want me on more food because my latest BIA test also showed that my muscles are not getting enough nutrition and latest blood test shows my total protein is dipping. Since 6 weeks post op I have gotten all my protein from food (mostly high protein yogurt), but I now have to add in a shake a day to get enough. I get around 100g from food. Today looks like this Meal 1 - Oatmeal with flax seeds and pumpkin seeds around forgot that add that I have high protein yogurt in it as well. 15g and I a Iced Latte I'll get 22g Meal 2 - Chicken in Fajitas sauce and and 10g of dry pasta 27g (4-5oz) Meal 3 - Stew with lean meat, potatoes and carrots 18g (5oz) Meal 4 - Because I'm lazy, another stew 18g (5oz) Meal 5 - 125g of salmon and 50g of brussel sprouts 27.5 Meal 6 - Shake Without the shake I'm at 116g of protein, 43g of fat and 57g of carbs of a total of 1084 kcal. My nut wants me closer to 1400-1500 kcal. If I add the shake I'll get 141 protein, 46 fat and 64 carbs of a total of 1249 kcal. I meal prep so I know how much each portion has of everything. -

I just discovered nutritional yeast (2 tbsl = 60 calories & 9 g of complete protein). You can add it to all kinds of recipes. it has a kind of cheese/nutty taste). The name sounds yuk, but it is actually tasty and is another food item to play with. Also... I discovered powdered peanut butter too! Forgot how much I missed and loved peanut butter. 2 TBSp has 54 calories and 4.4 g protein. Mixed it with some banana and plain yogurt today and it was the BOMB. two more ideas for you... -
I'm not sure what your stage 2 diet allows, but I ate a lot of greek yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes and strained or creamed soups...

Help! Sleever for 6 days. Carbs?

Try some whole milk yogurt. Drink a little juice just to bring it up or regular gatorade , chase it with lots of protein - pureed cottage cheese. Or call your bariatric clinic. The most important thing is to get the blood sugar to stay up to a normal level - if it goes much lower you could have a seizure and worse.
