Let's Play Another Round of "How I Get My Protein" post WLS
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Ok, I'll play! I'm gonna pretend that I'm post WLS by 3 weeks. At 3 weeks I'm at the soft solids. My daily protein goal is 74g for my height. My portion size is 2oz Protein/meal; 1oz Protein/snack. I'm to have 3 meals and 1-2 Snacks daily, but since I'm still so newly after surgery it's really 5-6 mini meals of the same size. Meal size by volume is about 1/4-1/2cup. (Because I'm so close to surgery, I'm sure I will be relying very heavily still on protein supplements and will also probably need 3 meals + 3 snacks per day...) B: 1/4c 2% Daisy cottage cheese + 2tbs Walden Farm strawberry syrup (7g P) MS: 1/4c 0% Fat HEB Greek yogurt + 2tbsp Walden Farm blueberry syrup (6g P) L: 1/4c salmon salad (1oz canned, drained, skinned pink salmon; 1/2 hb lg egg; 1 tbsp 2% Daisy cottage cheese; 1 tsp country dijon; 1 tbsp Walden Farm Amazin Chipotle Mayo; TJ EBBS) (8g P) AS: Same as lunch (8g P) D: 2oz blackened tilapia + 1 tbsp avocado + 1 tbsp mild salsa (9g P) BS: 1/2c PBC protein pudding (homemade) (11g P) Daily Total Before Supplementing with Protein Drinks: 401cals; 49g Protein; 12g F; 20g Carbs; 3g Fiber; 17g Net Carbs (*Note: I will need about 9fl oz of Premier Protein Vanilla to hit my protein goal for the day. I'll probably just use those in my morning decaff coffee as a coffee creamer. (Daily Total After Supplementing with the Protein Drinks: 532 cals; 74g Protein; 14g Fat; 24g Carbs; 5g Fiber; 19g Net Carbs) -
I started off with cottage cheese and when that worked just fine I tried some yogurt. Both were OK. I also had no problems with eating oatflakes and milk (I eat them cold) but that was last night, and this morning I feel like they’re still there... so maybe not try that again so fast, we’ll see.

Protein powder. Costco has decent ones and reasonable prices. Sugar free popsicles. Yogurt, depending on your plan. Cream soup or something that can be blended.

How to get solid protein down after 3 months post op
BonsW posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Duodenal Switch, 3 Months Post Op. Never hungry. Need to get in 90 grams of protein. Can't seem to do it. After a few bits, feel nauseous and don't want to eat anymore. Tried different protein shakes, also hard to get down. My best friends are the so called "slippery" foods, yogurt, yogurt, yogurt and cottage cheese. Help! How can I get solid protein down? -
Are there any preop smokers out there
Sherry Rice replied to fabnfit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Surgery Date 10/28/2017 So I woke up in the middle of the night and had a massive craving for a cigarette. I didn't smoke though. Thankfully, I had thrown them all away! Yesterday (Day 1 PreOp Diet AND Day 1 quit smoking) was ROUGH! The hunger pains were the worst! So bad that I hardly noticed how much I wanted to smoke. I think this liquid diet is going to be super helpful to quit smoking. I drank more fluid every time the hunger pains were bad. I do think it's weird that I haven't gone into ketosis yet. I have the Keytone Test Strips and it was negative as of a few minutes ago. I had 2 Premiere Protein Shakes, At least 90 oz. of sugar free drinks, 8 oz. beef broth, 1 sugar free jello, 1 Oikos Triple Zero vanilla yogurt, 2 sugar free chocolate puddings. At around 8:00pm I was so hungry and I was shaking like a leaf! I ate one bite of shredded chicken breast (1-2 tsp?). That took away the shakes after about 20 minutes and I was able to fall asleep around 10:00pm. I woke up this morning and did my Tespo vitamin shot and drank a Premiere Protein shake. Here's hoping today is easier than yesterday!!!! Im about 1/4 way through a 32 oz. Powerade Zero. -
At seven weeks, I was eating about 700 calories with 70-90 grams of protein and at least 64 ounces of water a day. So Breakfast - Premier caramel protein shake with 1/2 cup of coffee and sugar free chocolate syrup and ice - (30 g protein, 130 cal.) Lunch - 3 ounces albacore tuna with 1 tablespoon mayo. Some lettuce leaves to eat the tuna in. (13 g protein 140 cal.) Snack - Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt - flavor of your choice - 15 g protein 120 calories Dinner - 4 ounces chicken breast grilled (28 g/140 cal.) some salad. Snack - mozzarella cheese stick - 1 60 calories 7g. So that's 93 grams of protein and under 700 calories. You could even throw in a sugar free pudding or jello for dessert. Use my fitness pal or some other app to track - it helps. Concentrate on protein.

Post Op Foods - Returning to Work
Diana_in_Philly replied to BusyMom945's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It depends on your plan post-op. Each plan is different. Mine was full liquids (yogurts, soups, shakes) the two weeks, then purees, then soft foods, then full meals all at 2 week intervals. So by 8 weeks out I was eating "normal" food. I have two teen daughters and a husband and I am a planner too. Generally before shopping each week I plan the protein for each night so I'm not scrambling with the what to cook or make with this issue when I get home. I just kept up my normal routine for them. During my first 2 weeks, I ate lots of greek yogurt and soup. Sometimes the eggface ricotta bake. I fed my family the usual stuff we would eat. In purees, if I made them meatloaf, I'd just mash mine up more - same with chili. By the third phase - it was lots of chicken and fish. For work, I don't have access to a fridge, so I pretty much pack the same thing on my office days. (I work from home a few days a week.) Chicken salad, romaine lettuce, yogurt and a cheese snack. Sometimes an apple (but I'm 1+ year out.) I didn't freeze stuff before surgery and I'm glad I didn't - my taste buds were off for a few weeks after surgery. -

Help!!!! Help me please!!!
Sullie06 replied to Toriann94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein shakes did not sit well with me so I drank a protein water. There are quite a few different ones on the market now. I drank the Atkins ones but I know GNC makes some good ones as well. As for the fear it's normal but you have to fight through it. I was scared to start eating again as well. Would it hurt, would I cause a leak, would I throw up (I never threw up during my early post op so that was a fear for me), what if I can't eat normally again. I'm now 9.5 months post op and love my new normal eating habits. I can eat pretty much anything but in smaller amounts but it took trial and error to get there. Start trying all kinds of soft foods. Mashed Potatoes, Refried Beans, Ricotta, Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, Cream Soups, Broths and once you find something that works branch out to food of similar make up and consistency. -

Have you tried just a regular cup of milk? Fruit tends to be really acidic. Milk is a buffer and can be soothing. If milk works, then stay in the dairy isle... yogurt, cottage cheese, soft cheeses.. work your way up that ladder. If dairy doesn't work, then try beans. Soy milk, thin refried beans, split pea soup, lentil soup, tofu.. The meat ladder: homemade broth, gently poached white fish, tuna with mayo, chicken thigh. Just keep on trying.. start with more liquidy foods and work your way up. Fruit doesn't have protein, and if you can't stand protein shakes then you need to find food with protein that you can tolerate. -
I’m 6 weeks out: breakfast: 2 eggs, tablespoon feta, 1/4 c fresh spinach cooked into omelette snack: Greek yogurt snack: latte lunch: 2oz chicken salad snack: string cheese dinner: chili or other protein dense soup snack: applesauce sometimes cottage cheese instead of yogurt or sub breakfast for a protein shake (rarely). But i’ve been eating very similar to this since 1 week out. Usually get about 800-900 cal.

Best piece of advice you can offer for a post-op sleeve patient
Jenopolis replied to ErinL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
5 months post op. 1. Don't underestimate how much time and help you will need in the beginning. I thought that since I recovered from the surgery so quickly, I would be fine to go back to being a mom/employee/wife/member of society right away. I ended up being tired to the point of depression trying to keep up with everything. You are basically going through withdrawal for weeks, living on protein shakes until you want to throw them at a wall and erase the memory of that fake sweet taste from your life forever. And you have little energy for handling life, especially if you are a person who is used to handling a LOT of balls in the air, which is so many of us! So take the time off, ask for help if you can, and be gentle with yourself. 2. IT WILL GET BETTER. I had major doubts about that for the first weeks. I hated life, and hated that I had the surgery, and thought I was doomed to be a freak who couldn't even eat meals with her family anymore. Ummmmm. Yeah, none of that turned out to be true. 3. Be strict with yourself and build discipline, follow your doctor's orders, but allow yourself regular "treats" so that you don't ever REALLY feel the urge to mess up. For me, the treats are those flip Greek yogurts with crunchy things, or Pure Protein Crunch Bites, a bag of Skinny Pop, or even just a big cup of hazelnut coffee-- I feel like I can love life when I can have those things on the regular! And I still get all my protein and water in, so I know I'm doing okay and my weight loss is good. Most importantly, I stay away from bread and fries and cupcakes and the things that could really do me in. -
Do u count protein and carbs??
GotProlactinoma replied to Dolcy1182's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I use a lunchbox metal round container that is 3 ounces. It really guides me so I don’t eat too much and get a stomach ache. I will take it with me sometimes if I have to eat out. Or at least think of it and put what I can eat on a separate dish from what has been served. i do not have to eat 6 times. Maybe 4? I just eat during the day when I feel the need for protein to stay strong. Right now I am preferring to eat rather than drink the protein powder, so I mix it into full fat greek yogurt, adding flax seed and a bit of coconut water to be able to mix those powders in. Then I put it into those little 3 ounce containers (I make enough for 2) and put them into my new Pokémon lunchbox with plastic spoons and a cold pack. When I need protein on the go I take a few bites. I was feeling a bit sick drinking the protein powder in milk, and this way I don’t, plus greek yogurt doubles the protein. -
I've been using either 2 protein shakes a day or a shake and a bar (about 30 grams each of whey). I also usually eat a Greek yogurt and a balanced meal. But I'm up 3+ times a night to pee. My water intake isn't excessive. I've read whey or protein can be a diuretic. I don't notice the excessive peeing during the day so much but I need sleep! Help me;)

3 weeks out and Blood Sugar elevated?
FluffyChix replied to maggiekay949's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ouch! Sorry you're having issues. Honestly if it were me, I'd be concerned. Protein drinks can be fairly insulinogenic for some of us with blood sugar issues. My BGs do go up when all I'm consuming are protein drinks. But more importantly, the Fairlife milk and yogurt also have carbs/sugars that may be affecting you. What kind of sauce? Marinara? That can also have hidden sugars. If it were me, I'd try dropping the milk first and replace it with ricotta cheese (the lowest grams of carbs you can find with it). Next I'd drop the yogurt or switch to the lowest carb Greek yogurt (plain) that you can find. I'd also test FBGs, pre-prandial, and post prandial until you know what your BGs are doing when you wake up and in response to your meals. It may mean that for right now, you still need your medications. Hopefully they will go down again once you are on solid food and can limit highly insulinogenic foods in favor of dense proteins, low glycemic veggies, small amounts of healthy fats, and low glycemic berries (if any fruit). Hang in there! -
3 weeks out and Blood Sugar elevated?

Hi all. Little surprised and cocerned about my blood sugar. Before surgery 9-26-17, it would come in at fasting a.m. 106-120. First week out was 80-95. Then rising slowly and yesterday was 125 today 134. Im having 3 protein drinks, one of them with Fairlife skim milk. Three 2 oz meals of low fat, no sugar yogurt or pureed chicken w/ricotta cheese and sauce. How concerned should I be and anyone have this happen? -

What was the worse thing you had to deal with after your surgery?
niseys4 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me it was the 2 wks of Liquid Dieting! It was hard not being able to chew! So what I did to over come this, I first put myself on a eating schedule. This way I was able to make sure I got my protein requirment in as well to stay satified. Next when it was my daughters turn to cook, she would graciuoly cook meats & veggies with broth & juices! Once I was able to eat solid food I had to deal with constipation & getting enough protein. The problem with getting my protein was due to the fact that I could no longer tolerate all flavors of the Preimer protein drinks! Nor can I eat cheese, all pork or some forms of beef! I can, however, Eat cottage cheese & Greek yogurts ( the 1 with zero carbs & very low sugar). I had to experiment with different protein powders to find what was best for me. Finally, after much research I found Isopure 100% Whey Protein Isolate mixed it with flavored water! By the way, for some strange reason, I now can not tolerate Plain water! Good thing we have one of those under sink water filter systems! Now for the problem with constipation I try to drink at least 48 oz of my flavored water each day & i take a really good probiotic!( the kind you have to keep in the refrige) If I still dont have a BM(sorry, this is the nicest way I can describe it) within 2 days then I take a full medicine cup of Milk of Mag ( also called MOM) every other day. I am now 9 wks post op & doing well & feeling great & looking fine! I dont have ANY regrets or mind the slow weight loss. That way I can stay on top of the flabby skin! My surgery was August 16, 2017. Beginning weight was 210 now Im 190 Lbs. This was taken in early Sept. I was 195Lbs. Sent from my SM-T530NU using BariatricPal mobile app -
I am lactose intolerant. I can't handle much dairy and it got worse after being sleeved. I can barely withstand Greek yogurt anymore which I never really had a problem with. I have just started being able to sort of tolerate string cheese. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Hardly eating
Drzthickness85 replied to Drzthickness85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you very much very helpful! I was at a point of regret to be honest! I mean after the surgery I understood the love I have for food! That now that I'm unable to have none I'm doubting myself! I even have recipes of my old time favorite foods that I have twek to a healthy way and I can't get it as why I can't enjoy my food now that I'm on solid. For example today I tired to have some fish sticks (3) with 11g of protein I made it into a gyro style spinach, thin sliced red onions, tomatoes and as the tarter sauce plain Greek yogurt with pickles! And I used 1/4 of a whole wheat wrap! Took 3 bits and 1 I was full, and 2 got the only cramping stomachache! Does it sound like I'm moving to fast in my foods? I just don't get it! -

Torriluv87 replied to Drzthickness85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok first off congratulations on your surgery! I had the runs for a bit too. It got a bit better once solids came into the picture. I was lactose intolerant before surgery and its not any better but what i found that helped was leaving it out. I can still consume small amounts but I'll still get sick if i consume small amounts over several days. It builds up into this huge horrible bathroom nightmare. Or LITERALLY one Greek yogurt will send me spiraling into horrible cramps and diarrea. Any time that happened i knew id have to lay off the dairy. I substituted with soy or almond milk. I'd get unsweetened soy milk. It has 7g of protein per 8oz i believe. Almond milk tastes a bit better but only has 1g for the same amount. I'd heard of nut milks with 10g of protein but i haven't looked for them. Also try a vegan protein powder. I think Unjury is vegan? Correct me if I'm wrong. I had the chocolate one given to me and it was like drinking a chocolate yoohoo. Definitely leave the dairy alone. Ive been doing fine on almost none. Give your body a few days to come around. If your THAT lactose intolerant it'll take a few days maybe for your system to get back to normal (i only say that cause any time things like you explained happened to me, it was from dairy and took about a good week or 2 for me to feel normal again). But it'll only happen if you eliminate the dairy. I am only speaking from experience. But also check in with your surgeon. It sounds like your having a rough time. I feel for you hon. I hope things get better soon. Hey all! So I'll be a month out surgery on the 19th and I'm unable to eat! Everything I eat literally give me a stomach and I'm running to the bathroom! I'm serious drained I practically live in the bathroom and is frustrating! I was told to stop all diary because I was feel horrible after consuming my protein shake, or a piece of cheese even yogurt! Has anyone experienced this? I don't know what else to eat/do! I'm starting to worry myself that I'm going to get malnourished and sick because I'm no having my protein! My weight is still the same as of last WK 237! I'm taking my pills and drinking my water but I'm feeling hopeless! Your inputs are greatly appreciate!
