    a joke for you

Hi all - I have a joke for you. Having lost some weight, a middle-aged woman was admiring her "new" body in her full-length mirror. Seeing this, her husband said "What on earth are you doing?!". She told him "my doctor says I have the breasts of an 18 year old". Annoyed by this, the man then said "Well, what did he say about your 55 year-old ASS??!" To this the woman cooly replied "Your name never came up!" Have a great day! Robin

    Feb 13th!

Congrats! We are on the same day. 3 more days, yay! Height 5'0" Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs. Surgery date: 2/13/17 Goal: - 71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs). My profile picture is not me. It's my "FitSpiration" body.
  3. A great amount of weight loss so far!Great!
  4. Not to be the voice of doom but many people need another surgery at some point. They really don't know how durable the sleeve is long term- meaning how it will do for people 10, 20, 30 years out or longer. There are teenagers and very young adults getting sleeved now. Some are like me and had a band failure but some are ALSO like me and when they lose all of their weight and maintain for several years "forget" that obesity is a life-long battle - I am guilty of this - my band failed but I also did. Never again!

    Change of insurance?

I wouldn't think that the medically supervised diet would need to be redone unless the insurance has a weird requirement that it be done by particular doctors or a different provider type than you used. (Dietician, nutritionist, MD/DO) A medically supervised diet is a medically supervised diet. My particular insurance required that I try a medically supervised diet within the prior 2 years. I had not had that so had to do the 6 months. It did not have to occur while I was covered by that insurance company. My insurance allowed it to be done by dietician, nutritionist or a doctor. I also could have documented 6 months with a program like Medi-fast or Weight Watchers.

    getting there

Today is January 9th I had my psych appt and cardiology appt today. Things are moving along. Next week alot of testing for cardiology. I'm getting closer. I feel huge but confident about my decision. I hope this tool will allow me to become the person I know I am and give me the energy I want to have. Lugging all this weight around is tiring and frustrating. People who haven't had a weight problem think this is just a mattre of self control, they don't understand that this isn't all about choice. Here's to the future and a healthy lifestyle. me me its all about me....finally:clap2::eek:

It's a narrow-network product, and I believe it's only offered in northern CA. here in the bay area, which means your two sites for surgery ought to be either Valleycare or Summit in the east bay, UCSF in SF, or Mercy Methodist in Sacramento. The same criteria apply for approval of surgery; here is a link to the policy: https://www.healthnet.com/static/general/unprotected/pdfs/national/policies/BariatricSurgery.pdf They do NOT require six months waiting period, nor have they since this policy was updated in May 2015, however "Patient has made a reasonable effort to lose weight and there is documentation that these attempts at dietary control have been ineffective in achieving a medically significant long-term weight loss.". A psychological evaluation is required. Their criteria for individuals with a BMI between 35 and 40 are pretty stringent. All of these details are on pages 3 and 4 of the policy. Health Net requires that its delegated medical groups (Brown & Toland, Hill, Mercy, etc.) follow Health Net's criteria. This means that if your medical group says that you need to anything beyond what is mentioned in the criteria, they are incorrect. Your surgeon will have specific requirements for preop diagnostic testing, such as an EGD and/or upper GI X-ray, a sleep study, or an EKG, and that's fine, those are diagnostics your surgeon needs and not subject to the health plan or medical group's policies. I hope this helps!

    Only down 8pounds !

Hi! So you had the revision so that you wouldn't regain the 75 pounds? Did I understand that correctly? That's smart! Anyway, because you are already at a lower weight, you will lose slower. That seems to be pretty normal. As we get closer to our goal weight, the pounds come off slower. Ex: I was 100 pounds overweight. I lost 50 in a few months. Now i've slowed down to a pound a week. I'm ok with that because i am not gaining! W/o my sleeve i would be gaining by now. What is your goal weight?

    Slow start after vsg?

You really shouldn't! It will just make you question your progress and you are doing great!! Everyone is different because they started at different weights, have different accompanying health issues, male or female, it all makes a difference!! Be happy for others but don't let their successes make you doubt your success. You are a brave champion and you are changing your life for the better! You are doing AMAZING!! Don't ever doubt that!! Just curious

I'd guess the ever increasing rate of obesity in the U.S. is part of the answer...but also I think the weight requirement was more of an insurance requirement. Doctors tend not to be as strict. If I could have had this surgery when I was 180 pounds (back when I was 25)...and gaining every year at a steady rate...I would've done it and gladly paid for it myself even though I only needed to lose about 60 pounds at that point. .

wow thank you 2goldengirl you are so informative. I live near Sacramento and my Dr told me he would refer me to the appropriate surgeon after I completed Dignity Healths' requirement which was physical therapy 2 sessions to see if I will be able to workout, nutrician class, completed, doing either weight watchers or myfitness pal, i do track on my fitness pal and to attend a seminar on barriatric surgery which i did at the Methodist location. I have no clue who the surgeon would be although they ususally from the woodland office refer to Dr. Laura Machado but she does not take my plan yet. So, with that all said. I just wonder why I had to go through this whole 6 month ordeal? It started in July and well, I will be meeting back on Jan 28th? i already have Sleep anpea and a 40 Bmi, a bad knee so he said I qualified however needed to wait before he referred?
  13. I was sleeved in Aug 12. I lost 20 pounds in 3 1/2 weeks and then the scales stopped. Then I only lost another pound, but this last weekend I lost 3 pounds in two days. Did I just get over my stall or is this common? I never expected to be able to set a watch to the weight loss, but wasn't expecting it to be in chunks. Thoughts? TIA!

    Lapband And Ms

Hi and welcome! I too have Multiple Sclerosis. Yesterday was actually the 4 year anniversary of my diagnosis. I firmly believe losing weight and getting healthy is the very best thing we can do for ourselves. We can't cure the MS, but we can get rid of the fat and all the health related issues that come along with it. I was banded 9 1/2 months ago and I've lost 158 pounds so far. I have to tell you- losing weight, eating healthy, and forcing myself to be more active has helped me more than any MS drug ever could. The National MS Society's slogan is "Keep Moving" and I understand that now more than ever. It's so crucial for us to keep our bodies moving so MS can't stop them. When I had the surgery in January, I walked with a cane. I had to park in handicapped spaces just to make it into stores then use a motorized cart to get around the store. Now, since losing the weight, I don't use a cane anymore, I don't use a motorized cart, and I don't need a handicapped spot. I now walk about 2 miles 5 days a week. If I can do this, you can totally do this too!! Believe in yourself!! Best wishes to you!
  15. I was banded in 2009. I didn't lose much weight and i got depress. In 2010 a neurologist thought i was having seizures because my speech was slurred and i wrote like a 2yr old. In July of 2011. I thought i had a stroke, but after all the test, including a spinal tap. I found out i had MS, this explained a lot of things, like why i could no longer take zumba and why i was so depressed and fatigue. Seizures(ok) a misdiagnosis is what it was. Anyway Im BACK and ready to defeat this weight and the MS issues. Had a MRI today and i got my go ahead to get back on track. Im BACK to walking and have a fill scheduled for 11/14. Im restarting my protein shakes and zumba soon. My starting weight is 261.3 i will post every Tuesday my new weight. With a lot of praying and support from this forum i know in 6 mos i will be below the 200 mark. Please join me on my journey to a healthy me fighting a chronic illness like MS. THE FIGHT IS JUST STARTING BUT THE BATTLE IS ALREADY WON....POST YOUR PROGRESS ****PLEASE****

    Extremely Discouraged

Doing just shakes for 2-3 days might kick things off. In additon, once you go back to solids, I would focus on eating the right things- low carb/low fat/high protein. Lots of lean meat and non-starchy veggies. I eat eggs and or low fat sausage for breakfast. Also, if your not working out I highly reccomend you start. It has so many benefits, just one being weight loss. I hope they figure out what's going on with your band soon. Very strange they couldn't even find it. Best wishes!

    A little discouraged

I think it's important to realize that losing 200 is not the same as someone who never had that weight. I mean I know we all know that, but knowing and seeing it on yourself is difficult. I also think some people are never happy. Haven't you ever met that beautiful person who was so quick to point out their own flaws. Besides, if you really want, you could always have a nip and tuck. Personally, I am still far from skinny, but I definitely like how I look in clothes again. As for without, well it could be worse. My grandma used to walk from her room to the shower and back naked and at least I don't look like that...yet.
  19. I just talked to the first woman I have met to have lost te same amount as I need to lose and she tells me she HATES the way she looks. To tell or not to tell?

While I was going through the prep, I only told two people. When I was approved and a surgery date scheduled, I told a few more people, figuring the gossip line would let everyone else know. Not until about 50 loss, did anyone comment. I readily told them I had bariatric surgery. Their first response generally was "I know someone else who had that surgery and they had _____ complications." Now after five months and 80 pounds, I want to discuss my surgery with anyone who has an interest. I want to be an advocate for WLS. People are going to ask how you are losing so quickly. And as in my case, those who didn't ask, assumed I had cancer or some other bad thing wrong with me. Don't fool yourself by thinking no one is going to notice or ask. I think the biggest struggle with telling or not telling is the fear of what feedback you are going to get. Most of it will be positive. But then there are uneducated (uneducated in bariatric surgery) people who will say something stupid or hurtful. When this happens, you have one of two choices. You can either allow that stupid/hurtful comment to chip away at your self-esteem or you choose to realize that this person has no clue as to what they are saying. Trying to educate them more than likely will be useless, because they know everything about everything. But you can try. Don't give these negative people the power to make you feel bad about yourself. The most hurtful thing someone can say to me is that I took the easy way to weight loss. This has only happened once. My response was "I respect your opinion, but you have no idea what you are talking about." And I left it at that. I did not give that person the power to make me feel bad. I put a lot of hard work into my weight loss. My surgery is only a tool. Generally, when someone belittles you, they are trying to make themselves feel better and more superior to you. They themselves suffer from low self-esteem and the only way they can feel better about themselves is to belittle someone else. This is not your issue, but theirs. Don't allow this to be your issue. I was married to a bully for 17 years who made me feel I was lower than the grunge build up at the base of the toilet. It took a divorce and five years of counseling before I finally realized that there was nothing wrong with me - it was him all along! Just don't give away your power to anyone who doesn't deserve it.

    Kutting Weight and Sweet Sweat

Decided to get off my a$$ and jumped on treadmill. I decided why not try this new product I bought. It is a sweat suit from Kuting Weight. Am I crazy. YES. It was already 90+ degrees here and my treadmill is in the sun room. Also put on the lotion that is supposed to help you sweat in those places that never sweat. For me it would be arms and thighs. I looked like a bratwurst with the skin wrapped too tight. But I was determined. I only did it for twenty minutes as I was sweating like a pig a a pig roast. But goal accomplished I sweat-ed my butt off. Going to garden now to hoe
  23. One thing I learned. After one year I went on a cruise, had a dinner roll every night, great meals, then went to Perdido Key eating out for a month. It put me on a path to regaining 20 lbs. I am back on track with shakes, salads, and proteins. I have finally lost ten hard to go pounds. If you don't stay focused and track your food, like me, you will gain, and I can tell you that even TEN POUNDS is hard to get off.
  24. Good Morning, I had my revision the end of August 2014 started at 227 and I'm now at a stand still at 193! I'm really at a lost I haven't lost anymore weight I have been steady toggling between 189-194 I can't get out of this slump and my surgery anniversary is fast approaching! I'm not sure if this count as slow are just stopped?
  25. Seasoned sleevers, what was your weight loss like? I have read several posts where people have talked about slow weight loss after revision. I know our metabolisms are slower already since we had the band, but I haven't really lost any weight in the last week or so, just 3 was post op. Just curious as to others experiences.... Also, I noticed a bump under one portion of my incision where they removed my port. Last week, the entire incision was a little hard, now it is just at one end. Did anyone experience this? How long until it went away?
