  1. Gastric Sleeve surgery in 10 days. Praying I get through this with no complications and no COVID. So nervous.  Any tips?

Get some SF Popsicles, they are a life saver if you can't keep other foods down. If you have to cook for people in your household, cook some dishes for them before surgery. Get a pillow for the ride home. Chapstick will come in handy. And if you are super nervous before surgery, you can ask your doctor for something to calm your nerves. Good Luck!

you know what? i had it 7 days ago, and it really was no big deal. took about an hour, i woke up in no pain except a scratchy throat from the intubation. That lasts several days. The worst part of the whole thing is getting rid of the gas they blow into you during surgery. Horrible gas cramps for a couple of nights, then fine. My insisions are starting to itch, but that is no big deal. You will be fine!!

  2. Hey guys. I really need help. I am exactly one year post op. I haven’t been eating right at all since the surgery. I lost weight the first 9 months and have basically plateaued for the last three months. Abt 3-4 pounds down collectively. I lost 100 pounds and still have 35 to go to hit a normal bmi. I thought that I was just being lazy and that’s why I couldn’t get my eating habits under control. Since COVID-19 I’ve been home and paid all my attention to my health and eating habits. If I follow a strictly high Protein diet, I am so constipated I feel like I’m going to pass out from pain. If I do fruits and vegetables I get insanity gassy. I need to stay away from too much fat because I get oil leaking if not.. so that literally just leaves me with carbs. And not even complex carbs. I’ve been naturally gravitating to these foods before surgery-obviously, and now anything else I eat makes me sick. Anyone else went through this? And this point, it’s not so much about the weight loss. I reached a point mentally where I don’t NEED to be thin in order to be happy. I just want to be healthy and feel good. And junk food is not doing that.... any advice?

    Started soft foods today

I just started week 5. Lost 17 pounds in the first 28 days. I tolerated liquids well so doctor gave OK to start puree on day 10 (instead of day 15) and soft foods a week later (day 17). At first I could only eat a couple of tablespoons of food (the entire day) but now can eat a full egg with some additional egg whites added. The amount you can eat will increase with time and will vary depending on what it is. I can eat about 5 oz of yogurt but only 3 oz of meat. I still drink a protein shake almost every day in order to meet my 60 gram daily protein requirement. I tried eating meat twice in one day to get in protein, boy did I pay a price. I felt miserable the entire evening and into the night. I keep my calorie count between 500-600 per day. Give your body time to adjust. And yes, food does taste good after having had just liquids for a couple of weeks.
  4. Drank the magnesium citrate about required for surgery tomorrow and threw up about 10 minutes after finishing it. Did this happen to anyone else? I don’t know who to call on a Sunday for info. I did take 2 dulcolax this morning (also required as part of bowel prep).

    July 2020 WLS Veterans

Congrats on your long term success. We are some of the faithful... perhaps lucky to carry Our WLS on for years. I’m on a bit of upward gain, but have faith 10 lbs can be gone... still takes devotion and time. Once again. I’m so happy you got to live at a “ normal” (whatever that means to us) life. I am truly grateful!!
  6. yes. This is the first time in my adult life that I've actually been able to maintain a loss (I'm five years out and have been in maintenance for 3.5 years) not gonna lie - it's a daily struggle - I still plan my eating for the day every morning (or the night before), log my food intake, and try to stay within my maintenance calorie range (which for me is 1500-1700 per day - but that's going to vary for everyone). It's a hassle but it's do-able. I NEVER could maintain a weight loss before I had WLS. I should add that most of us gain 10-20 lbs after we hit our lowest weight. It's not inevitable, but it seems to happen to the majority, for whatever reason. I shot up 12 lbs in year 3, and then another eight pounds last summer & fall (I'm in the process of dealing with the recent eight-lb gain. I have no desire to go back to my lowest weight, which I think was too low for me). But keeping the weight off is do-able if you monitor yourself and, as someone above said, see this as your new lifestyle rather than another diet.

    No exercise

Due to a broken hip I have not been able to exercise so walking is all I can do. Surgery to fix hip was 7/8/20. My Gastric Bypass was 6/24/19. Hoping to lose 40 lbs.

    Arm Lift Experiences?

I had an extended arm lift- scar from elbow to under middle of each breast to get the loose skin that was at the side boob area. That little bit of creepy wrinkly skin you have was my entire upper arm but twice as wrinkled re the depth of the skin. If I wore elbow length sleeves you could see loose, wrinkly skin hanging out. I had the arms of a 90 year old. If I had your arms I would have been on the fence. Have you done a lot of arm exercises to build up muscles to help with the lose skin? I would suggest getting a consult and maybe you could get the smaller incision that just goes in your arm pit. I don't know if that would "fix" it enough for you but then the incision would be hidden. My arms were so bad that if I wore a tank top and had my arms down at my side you could see across the room that my arms were terrible looking. Now at 5 months I have a thin red line if my arms are at my side but as soon as I lift my arm up the scar turns skin color/white. So in another 6 months it should be faded even when my arms are down. Now if I am 10 feet from the bathroom mirror and hold my arms up you can see a faint line. I would guess next summer if you are more than 5 feet away you wouldn't probably wouldn't even notice the scar.

    Keto

I hope it goes well for you. You will most likely loose a good deal of weight initially. However, my long term keto friends still struggle with weight maintenance over time, Sustainability and nutritional balance can be issues. I know I would never be able to handle the high fat load of a keto plan. I have been on a whole food plant based plan (WFPB) for about 6 months now and doing great, feeling great. Weight is well controlled and I am NEVER hungry. I eat 8-10 servings of nutritionally dense veggies/fruit every day, along with at least 3 servings of legumes/tofu/tempeh, 2 servings of whole grains, and a wide variety of nuts and seeds. I get at least 60 grams of protein daily, All my labs are great. My cholesterol dropped from 235 to 152 and LDL is actually BELOW normal range! Even 100+ pound weight loss did nothing for my cholesterol and high LDL. Interestingly, when looking at populations with the greatest longevity and members over 100 years old, all of them are plant based with very little animal protein. Hmmmmmm. The highest rates of osteoporosis and hip fracture are in populations that consume the most meat and dairy products. Hmmmmmm. Food for thought. Bottom line for me is that WFPB is healthy, sustainable, and affordable. I do triathlons, distance biking and hiking (aiming for a one day, rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike and a 100 mile bike race next year), and I feel great with loads of energy! WFPB allows one to enjoy plenty of healthy carbs that are incredibly satisfying and which provide a lot of energy. I never feel deprived.
  11. Thanks. It's happening on Thursday! I'm so glad you breast/tummy work went well. How long was your recovery? I'm doing arms first. Then in the future, breasts and tummy would be great. I'll try and keep you posted. I should some before and after pics. I'm really going between anxiety and excitement at the moment... Also scared that they will stop elective surgeries again because of COVID-19. Now, I just want it over with!

    Sent home after 7 hours!

I came home from the hospital 10 pounds over my surgery weight. It took about a week for the fluids to come off. I agree with others, don’t weigh yet!
  13. Definitely normal. I gained over 10 lbs right after surgery. I had never been over 200 lbs in my life and planned to NEVER hit the 200 lbs mark but I was 203 lbs for a few days after surgery. and I panicked. It is just all the air they pump in you and the IV fluids.. only lasts for like 3-5 days and it will vanish. Don't worry!!

    Sent home after 7 hours!

Congrats on your surgery and new tool! I agree on waiting on weighing yourself! That water weight gain is serious lol. i have renpho. It connects to my phone via Bluetooth and keeps everything documented for me so I can go back and see what I weighed at week 2, 10 and so on. It also is a body mass analyzer so it tells me how much bone density, body fat and blah blah blah. It keeps track of my BMI as well. I have it set up so when I open the app, it shows me what my current weight is but also how much I’ve lost and how many BMI points I’ve lost. You can also do body measurements and keep track of them on there. I believe it’s called a renpho body smart scale and is on amazon for about $32.

    weight gain directly after surger

Normal. I came out of the hospital a whole 10 pounds heavier than when I went in. It’s scientifically impossible to gain fat on 600 calories a day, don’t stress.
  16. About Me: Pre Weight: 200lbs Height: 5”3 Post Weight: 120 (4 yrs later). Lost all my weight in the 1st year. Lowest 117, looked very sick, couldnt barely eat. Slowly got up to 128 my highest oct 2019. Then lost 8-10 lbs when started working. So my question is, what is your diet like? Calorie Intake, foods you tolerate, can”t tolerate, meal plan, how much can you eat. Me: Main things I eat 2 Toast, Egg, Cheese sandwhich, but yet I get full from just having 1/2 porkchop; Im talking the size if my palm in half by itself Weird! I used to be able to eat lots of popcorn when I could have it. Now I can barely finish a typucsl medium popcorn. I can drink pop no problem 2-3 Slices Pizza: (Depends on size) I can eat a pack of oatmeal with peanut butter. Only that. Can do coffees Can’t do Ice caps! Major sugar dump. and i cant tolerate ice cream any more can do yogurts umm typical meal: 1/4 - 1/2c Carbs, and for meats 3sm meatballs, 1 Thigh, 5 pieces of chicken fries by itself). can do half chicken breast with 1/4-1/2c rice I still dont or know how to get the carb/protein and vegetables. I just have room for the carbs/meat. Which is fine because i hate alot of veggies. And fruits; I have in smoothies; I can do around 8-16oz, depends on what I make. so in short, I still cant eat alot at once but i get hungry every 2 hours, i can do 3 if i am not working, and just being home or out and about since i cant fit in the veggies, if i didnt would be like 1/4-1/2 meat, 1/4-1/2c Pasta, potatoe, rice, and then like 2 broccoli. Whats the point if the broccolli then, especially if i favor favor the carbs and protein before tge veggies. Waste if time to cook 2-3 broccollis.. I try and get veggies in by juicing, but its a battle. So far i only like green veggies to juice. I would never eat celery, cucumber, spinach, but it took me a while to build up to be able to drink it soooo what about you?

    Stomach pains

Day 1 here and in the same boat. I have not experienced nausea, which I feel good about. However, like you, everytime I sip, I get small pain in the stomach. I am sipping every what seams like 10 minutes things like broth, Powerade Zero, and flavored water. We can do this!
  18. Today was my surgery. Their scale said I weight in at 249. Bummer. So let me just say, the recovery was the hardest for me. But as the hours went on, it got easier and easier. I walked twice. It was suppose to be overnight, but they only granted elective surgery, due to covid, if it was an outpatient. I still have not vomited, so crossing fingers. I do feel little rising up pains after I drink. I am drinking pretty much every 10 minutes, sips. Broth, Gatorade Zero, Water. My doctor also said he repaired a hernia I had! I can't wait for the results! Do yall weigh yourselves? I think I need a new scale.

7 months out, "Touch Down" Goal Met

yes - it'll stop - and then many of us bounce back up 10-20 lbs a few months later. So you may just look like Olive Oyl for a few months. If it's really worrying you, you can always come up a bit on calories - but keep in mind that most of us do have that 10-20 lb rebound

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Today is day 9 since surgery and I have been struggling hard mentally and emotionally pretty much all week. It all kind of crashed down directly after my post-op appointment on Monday. Part of the program was getting the "bible" as part of the education process. The "bible" is the program's bariatric handbook that details out every single step in the days leading up the surgery, the day of surgery, and the weeks following. It's a road map for how things will go. My doctor...is the medical director for the program. And on Monday, he pretty much told me that he doesn't usually follow the handbook and that I should not pay attention to it. So, while right now I am still on a liquid phase (clear fluids and 3 protein shakes a day), I was anticipating the follow up at week 3 to progress to pureed foods as tolerated (protein shakes are never going to really go away). Instead, my doctor wants me to stay on liquids for 8 weeks. And while I understand his rationale for it as it will continue to provide an accelerated weight loss for a much longer period of time, it completely shattered me because right now the only thing I do with my time every day...is consume fluids. I am only allowed to drink 1 ounce of fluids every fifteen minutes. I am supposed to spread that ounce over the course of 15 minutes. Literally every waking moment is me sipping from a little 1 ounce medicine cup. The thought of doing this for 7 more weeks? I spent pretty much all day Monday and Tuesday crying because I just don't see how this can be sustainable. I'm getting 52-56 ounces of fluid in me every day at this point, but I am also waking up pretty much around 3am with my mouth completely dry, so it feels like I am barely managing to keep hydrated. And my doctor did say that at any point if I decide that I want to start integrating appropriate food into my diet, that I just have to let him know and he will work with me and adjust my diet. I just hate that he's putting that burden on my shoulders because it feels to me that when I make that decision, I am tapping out on accelerated weight loss and admitting defeat. I forced myself to go back to work onsite yesterday for a few hours just to get myself out of the house. It helped my mood and mindset some, but I came home really wiped out, so it may have been pushing things a bit much (on top of what is probably too aggressive an exercise plan so soon after surgery). Today I'm feeling a little bit better mentally and emotionally, but still pretty ragged. I'm tired of drinking these tiny little sips from these tiny little cups, but there's not really anything I can do about it. The best I can hope for is get through another week and a half and then ask if I can do 1 ounce of fluid every 8-10 minutes.

    STOP MAKING EXCUSES

Not only is @MIKEYY84 an attention seeking narcissist, but a misogynist as well. I'm sick of people telling me oh you must find a woman close to your age but I'm yet to meet a woman over 30 that doesn't have a bunch of kids yet and also the issue with the woman biological clock could stop at 40; as I'm yet to begin a family and it will be a year from now before I get near my goal weight and start a family so the only logical choice is looking for a girl that's around 10 years below as I want 4 kids which takes 10 years to make happen and that's only if all things are going perfectly so yeah it's hard to start dating when at my age I'm ready for kids and marriage and every girl I've spoken to anywhere near 30+ has kids and divorcee so it's hard indeed so I've made the decision for myself to look 10 years younger at least so I'll be able to have many kids https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/419131-i-can’t-date-overweight-people/?do=findComment&comment=4746355 **my own kids my own DNA** very important https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/419131-i-can’t-date-overweight-people/?do=findComment&comment=4746356 it is harder to find a girl as you get older because most have a bunch of kids or baggage but I've already decided because I want a big family I'll definitely have to look at ladies about 10 years below me so that there's no issues with them having children https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/419131-i-can’t-date-overweight-people/?do=findComment&comment=4772700 provided she has big breasts like DD or better , I like big butt too https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/411641-who-will-like-me-skinny/?do=findComment&comment=4746361 my age range is 18-25 https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/428004-aus-male-looking-for-girl-18-25-to-text-whatsapp/ I want to find a woman that deserves everything I have to offer if she has big tits https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/428743-can-we-just-be-for-real/?do=findComment&comment=4823793

Morning of mishaps & a happy dance

Congrats! Keep doing your Hoosier Happy Dance, it's a lot of work & stressing to get to this point. My happy dance was sorta robbed by Covid19 like many others, but I finally have my date & am on day 5 of my 10 day liver shrinking diet!

    6 months post op today!

you started out at a pretty low weight for a WLS patient, so I'm not surprised that you've lost slowly (although 10 lbs a month really isn't slow - I started out at over 300 lbs, and other than the first month, 10 lbs a month is about what I lost as well...). Anyway, starting BMI is a major factor in your rate of weight loss, so your weight loss is about what I'd expect
