  1. Hi everyone! I'm soooooo excited to have my surgery on Dec 17th! I am a full time college student finishing my degree interning as a student teacher. I graduate on Friday the 14th of December and I get sleeved the following Monday!! However I'm a little concerned about not having enough energy after Xmas break. I am taking over a teaching position right after Xmas break (January 6th) and I'm hoping that ill be recovered enough to handle being on my feet all day in a class FULL of students (we have almost 40 kids) these are 4 th graders and can suck the energy right out of you! When did all of you get your e egret boost I've been hearing so much about. Right now I'm 5'7" and 380 lbs. so it's hard to keep up with. I know it should be easer after I get some of this weight off

    Newly Sleeved!

Welcome @helladoll. That is a hell of a weight loss in 6 days! I hope you continue to heal well and the pain subsides quickly. Keep trying to get that Protein in. I was sleeved a week ago tonight. So far so good except for some incision pain when I rise from sitting or lying down. I walked for about 15-30 minutes tonight, the first day it was not 100 degrees outside and I got tired quickly. Just taking it day by day.

    A journey prolonged??

So, I am almost 2 1/2 months out from surgery. I got sick so lost a ton and then stopped...I have even gained 5 lbs back. I have such good intentions and I still can't get it right. I can eat anything and do. know that I have to get the mental stuff on track. Workouts have been difficult due to an injury but maybe I am just making an excuse! I don't expect anyone to read this but I guess just taking the time to write it out will help...plus it means that I am not eating:-) I need a good hobby. Something to keep me busy, something to take my mind of things. I have even thought about getting rid of my tv so I don't have that trigger. Night time and tv are the biggest along with all that emotional stuff.:huh2: I feel pretty hopeless. I want to do right for myself. I want food to just be food and not a crutch. I want to force myself to eat and forget to eat:-) Those things that thin people do. My boyfriend can just forget to eat for a whole day. How do people do that? My frustration is very high and I have thought of all sorts of things to try to get over it. Well....all I can do is try. And every day that I wake up is a challenge to be successful. I just don't know how to do it!

OMG I went a few days after surgery and then almost 2 more weeks and had not gone again...had to do enemas and miralax...it was torture. Doc told me to take pericolace if needed now. I think that was why my weight loss was slow after the first week...cause I was so full of $h@!

Ahh..weight loss surgery and the bathroom. So, for most people the first couple of weeks is smooth sailing! Sometimes a little to smooth.. But soon the constipation sets in and it will be a continuous problem for quite awhile as Iggy stated because of our diet. You need to find something that works for you. I would have a conversation with your doctor about this. I myself find the fiber gummies useless, I take miralax every day in one of my glasses of mio water.

    Hello

I have BCBS of California (aka Anthem BCBS, gets confusing). If you visit the website, which for me is "Empireblue.com", click on the "enter" button and then type "weight loss surgery" in the search box, you will find BCBS's policy for WLS. It will tell you everything expected of you. Once I completed my 6 month supervised diet and the necessary tests, etc. I think it took a week or two ... but I did have to "bug" them to make sure they stayed on the case. Hope this helps. If you can't find the info on the website let me know. I have a pdf copy that I would be happy to send to you. ~Fran

    Lots of Questions

Congrats on your weight loss! Whether you need a fill is something that only you and your surgeon or PA can answer after considering the following: How volume can you eat? How many meals a day do you eat? How long after eating are you hungry? That being said, plateaus are a normal part of the weight loss process. They can be frustrating if we let them. Are you sure you are only eating 1,000 calories a day? Are you logging your food and drink? When we estimate, we usually estimate to low. Are you drinking at least 64 ounces of Water a day? Are you consuming at least 50 grams of Protein daily? If the answer is yes to those 3 questions, try eating 200 more calories a day. It sounds backwards but the more fuel you give your body, the hotter the fire burns. If you gain after a week; cut it back down.

    Upset W/ Myself

The point of losing weight before surgery is to shrink your liver. If your surgery isn't until 6/27 you still have time to continue to lose by cutting back on your calories via cutting back carbs, sugars and fats. Start eating more proteins, veggies and fruits and supplement your daily intake by substituting one meal a day with a protein shake. That's what my nutritionist has me doing. You've already kicked yourself in the pants so now it's time to turn it around and do what you need to do to make the surgery as safe as possible for yourself. So from now on when you want something that isn't a good choice...ask yourself...is this worth the chance of my liver not being in the best shape for surgery? Helps me every time.

    hello

i am in the middle of obtaining approval. hoping to have insurance approval with surgery in december 2010. it's taken me a little more than a year to finally decide this is my best option to good health. i am a nurse and the biggest hurdle was facing the fact that i was not going to be able to "fix" this myself. in fact, it was a horrible admission to myself that i am this broken. but, now i have made the decision and am excited, anxious, weary, and hopeful. that list is not all inclusive of the multitude of emotions i am having every single moment i breathe right now. questions that i need to hear answered from women who've had the surgery. (please!!) i'm not finding any research to the answers. 1. with vsg is the loss of weight 'all over' or mostly abdominal fat first? 2. what is the incidence of hair loss? (vanity) 3. i'm reading that vsg has a slower weight loss than r&y; does this mean that there is less excess skin since in theory the skin will have more time to shrink? 4. for those that did not have the gallbladder removed, have you had problems and how many had to have another surgery later to remove it? 5. what is the loss to breast tissue, meaning, will they significantly be diminished in size? (this is the other thing that vanity is giving me fits about) thank you for your help in advance. deb
  11. Yesterday I saw my surgeon for my pre-op. About 3 weeks ago I was having some blood pressure and irregular heart beat issue. My surgery is scheduled for October 21. My echocardiogram was normal but the results from the holter monitor were not back yet. He let me keep my date but said if the slightest thing pings on the holter he will reschedule my surgery. I'll find out for sure on Friday when I see my PCP. He believes the issues were caused by a new medication I had started 3 days before the problems started. Since then I have stopped the meds and have not had any problems. Anyways he gave me instructions leading up to surgery. He told me I do not need to do the 2 weeks pre-op diet. I just need to do a 24 hour liquid diet the day before surgery. I've lost 20 pounds during this process, I started out at 250. I am now 230. He told me to keep the 20 lbs off and continue to try and lose more. If I gain even a pound he will cancel my surgery. I'm over here kinda panicking, I terrified I'll gain bc it will be right before my period and my weight fluctuates about 3 pounds every month. Once I start the weight falls right back off. He also said I need to start tracking everything I eat and drink. So what are your pre-op directions?

    3-month surgiversary

I hear ya on people getting tired of updates on the weight loss. I gradually stopped texting my core group of supporters daily (not about weight specifically-- anything interesting I've experienced) cause I figured they were growing wary of it. I now only update them once a month with photos. Keep evaluating where you are and how you are responding to experiences on your journey and adjust accordingly. This is what I think evolves in great maintainers.
  13. For the last 3 weeks I would go up and down about a pound on the scales. I got pretty bummed. I finally took it all out at the gym on my body on Monday. I walked on the treadmill at a pace of 4.0 and did two miles then I went to bikes and did another 4 miles. I was so worn out I came home and passed out. I woke up the next morning (Tuesday) and had lost a pound and half. Today I weighed myself again and had lost 0.8 lbs. I am now 10 lbs away from my first big reward of an hour massage!!! I can not wait till I hit the 199 mark!!! I have not felt this good, energetic, and happy in years. I have already gotten rid of all my fat clothes and just bought some leggings until I can get down to closer to where I want to be. As an added bonus, my hubby was rubbing my shoulders yesterday and said "you have nothing here anymore, it is all bone" which made me feel good also!!! I can finally see the changes in my body after losing 50 lbs!! BTW: surgery was on June 15 Starting weight 260 Surgery weight 245 Today 210
  14. I am working on my three month process...Calorie Counting and going to all my pre-op appointments. I am catching myself falling deeper into depression over my weight. I am constantly thinking about my weight, the surgery, the whole process and finding myself getting pretty emotional (at the most inconvienent of times). I am nervous, scared, and so forth. I keep thinking of my food addiction, can I really beat it? What if I fail? What if I don't like what I look like after I reach my goal weight? I see a lot of before and after photos and a lot of people look completely different. What if I loose all my friends? I am living in the land of what ifs and it is driving me crazy and since I am dieting I do not have my binge eating to cope with all the crazy. Am I loosing my mind??

    Hubby has questions

The hospital will give you discharge instructions for things to look for that may indicate you need to call your doctor. Agree that DH just needs to be supportive and keep trigger foods out of the house!! There may be a day or two that you question what you have done to yourself -- this is perfectly normal and passes quickly! One thing DH might need to be aware of if he has any weight issues: Tell him NOT to eat all the food you're no longer eating. My poor DH started doing that as soon as I was back on normal food and now his weight had gone up quite a bit!
  16. So encouraged after today. They said I was the most educated patient they had seen. This is due to this site! Thanks to all for sharing. I also learned I have mild sleep apnea. This of course will be eradicated after surgery. So now just working on insurance requirements-- which is the worst part of all of this. I was told today that 3 % of the people who lose weight on their own maintain their loss. 80% of the people who lose weight with the sleeve maintain their loss. AMAZING, I want those odds!

    getting banded 9-15-08

I'm also in that boat! Heavy since 8 years old. Don't get me wrong, I have what it takes to lose weight, in fact, I've likely lost hundreds of pounds in my life time! I just haven't found the secret to keep from finding each one of them. This time is for real! At 56, I have every intention of peeling off the tonage and rock and roll like a teenager!!! Good Luck to You Sweety!

Hi -- I'm 62 and have had the same "all lifetime" weight problem as you. My surgeon appmnt is 11 Sept and then we'll see when my scheduled date will be. I am also scared and somewhat excited -- am really affraid I'll be one of the few who seem to have problems -- but maybe not -- boy, I really sound confused don't I? Bottom line, I wish you all the luck in your journey and will be reading future questions/statements to check on your progress. Feel The Burn

Of course it depends entirely on what you're used to eating - what your energy needs are. If you're 500lb and live on 6000 calories a day you can lose weight darn fast still eating what I'd call a lot of food. But for me personally to shift 20lb in a month - a Protein shake diet is the only way I can think of to do that - 1000 calories a day or less, lots of cardio and just put up with being starving hungry. Now, I'm at a low weight, so no doubt you fit somewhere in the middle there. Its certainly doable, not pleasant, but doable. However, there's no magic in Protein shakes. If you can stick to 1000 calories or less a day on real food you'll lose weight just the same. But presurgery, high protein low carb is important - it shrinks your liver and much as I dont believe in low carb diets, its the best way to lose a lot of weight fast.
  22. @@uni2424 I do not have a thyroid due to papillary cancer. So I am definitely Hypo. I lost 60 pounds prior to getting the sleeve on 12/16. I've lost another 14 with the sleeve. It is very possible to lose weight with hypothyroidism. Just need to make sure you are being followed by an endocrinologist, get blood work done periodically, have your meds adjusted and take your meds correctly. I lost the 60 pounds by eating a less than 1200 calorie diet and exercising on a regular basis. My weight loss was a little slow and had frequent stalls...you just have to be committed to changing your lifestyle.
  23. you're right, probably not bariatric patients - but for normal people, 2000 calories a day is pretty standard. So is 225 carbs. Unfortunately, it seems like few of us bariatric types can eat like that and maintain our weight. Not fair, but, it is what it is...
  24. My read of it is that they aren't specifically talking about weight loss diets, but general good health, so a 2000 calorie diet is the typical "standard" adult diet (that's what most of the RDA's are based upon - then you adjust those according to what calorie level is appropriate for your individual weight maintenance needs.) Their findings aren't really anything new, but merely a continuation of the evolution of nutrition science, which still holds that for optimum health we need a balance of various micro and macro nutrients, spread through the various food groups. One of the salient points they bring up, one that I have long followed, is that the quality of the food, whether they be carbs, fats or proteins, is a lot more important than the quantity. This is why these fad diets that hold to certain magical macro counts or ratios tend to be pretty silly - and we see that sometime in these forums. Some may hold to that magical 20, 30 or 40g carb count, and then skip the "carbs" in that apple or broccoli to save up for that Snickers bar in their carb budget. I never worried about carb or fat counts while I was losing (and still don't) as the restricted calories and protein minima in the early post op world took care of that; rather I just worked to maintain as healthy a balance of foods as I reasonably could within my calorie budget; on average I ran around 100g of carbohydrates per day, but I was still working to slow down the loss rate at the six month mark. I actually increased my average carb count selectively at around the 4 month mark to promote better exercise endurance, and my weight loss trends improved (they stayed steady rather than declined as is typical) as that probably helped promote a marginally better calorie burn rate. The other benefit of using a more "normal" diet during the weight loss phase is that the transition to maintenance was much easier, as my maintenance diet is fundamentally the same as the "loss" diet - just more calories from the non-protein side of the diet spectrum (as protein should already be at a maintenance level during the loss phase.) I didn't have to learn a new diet for maintenance, nor have to switch diets to lose again if needed - just adjust the calories as needed.

    Questions

Hello! My name's Rebecca, I'll be 29 tomorrow - yay me! I can relate as well about having a lifetime of weight issues. I would suggest that you be very honest with yourself about what exactly you want from the surgery and what your fears are. Then rewrite them into constructive questions and bring them to your consult. Some examples: what is expected of the diet, how much weight does the average patient lose, or like I said - what your concerns are. I've seen many posts on here where people have said that the diet wasn't explained very well. In the beginning (until you train your mind otherwise) before you get restriction - you have to rely completely on sheer will - especially during pre-op and the post-op liquid phase. To be honest, even after you get restriction you still have to make healthy choices. The band doesn't fix your behavior it just helps you modify them and hopefully as you see more results and get healthier along the way, if and when you do have a not so good day or days, you can get back on track easier with the help of your band. All of that aside, I'm so happy I got the band - I know I wouldn't have been able to make this far without it. This is a great place for support! Always come back here when you need help or a good talkin to. God Bless- Rebecca
