    Your mom sounds a lot like my mom. Mentally stuck in 90's/2000's diet culture that makes them think anything enjoyable is bad for you & you can only lose weight is your food is green & tasteless. I'm now close to 3 months post op & she has learned about food & macros during my journey. I've made it a point to educate, as annoying as it is sometimes. Ofc you don't have to do that bc I know how stubborn moms are but NO you did not over-react. Our journey is so specific to us & they're on the outside looking in. They won't understand unless they spend the same hours we spent reading about this. Good on you for sticking to ur plan!

    3 months post op status and questions

    quantity definitely increases over time. Lifetime monitoring becomes pretty important if you want to keep the weight from coming back. I don't eat anywhere near where I used to, but on the other hand, no one would be able to tell I've had weight loss surgery. They just assume I'm a fairly light eater - but that's not anything different from a lot of my other women friends who've never been obese. yes you'll eventually be able to eat salad and veggies. my taste didn't really change in that I didn't like things that I liked before or vice versa, but my sense of taste became more intense after surgery. Sweet things tasted sweeter; spicy things tasted spicier. I don't notice it anymore and haven't for several years. Not sure if it gradually went away, or if I just got used to it. hydration has never really been a problem for me. For me, it helped drinking a 16 oz bottle of flavored water every morning before I had anything else, even coffee. Then I already had two cups of fluids knocked out before I even showered or got dressed. do you know for sure that you dump? It's actually fairly rare with sleevers - although not unheard of.
  3. Lost 47lbs from 2022 mid summer high point and 30lbs since 9/12/22 sleeve surgery. Had doubts on doing the surgery given my age (69) and 36.7 bmi but received a lot of encouragement from fellow travelers. The most difficult part for me is recognizing that eating will never be the same. I can’t physically eat a lot and now get satiated with very little. This is very different from how I lived. I would always eat a lot. Some foods taste differently and since my eyes are still larger than my stomach I tend to leave food on my plate. If I eat too much or too quickly, dumping is a real threat. The other challenge is staying hydrated. I don’t get enough water from food (fruits and salads) and need to constantly have a water bottle nearby and remember to use it. This has been a struggle. After 3 months these are my key issues. Overall the weight loss and general good feeling compensate any challenges. Would love to hear from + 6 or 12 months fellow travelers. Does taste improve? Can quantity increase to allow for salad and veggies? Does hydration improve? Thanks.

    There were days when in the first month or so that I ate a dozen or more SF Popsicles. I did them because early on I could barely eat or drink and the little bit of fluid and big flavor helped tremendously in many ways. They were lights on dark days. As I was able to eat and drink better the SF Popsicles fell out of my diet on their own. For the record my medical team suggested SF Popsicles for early on for the very reasons I used them. There is no way I didn't and don't take my surgery and plan seriously even now. I was a plan Nazi the first 3 years and slightly more flexible since. I lost my excess weight and have maintained it. SF drinks are a frequent element of my diet. I think artificial sugars are the gods' gift and have no issue consuming them when I want a sweet flavor. Everyone, interestingly, is different. If consuming artificial sweeteners causes you issues, go with me here, don't consume them. If anything causes you issues avoid them. If you don't have a problem, don't let anyone make it a problem.     Oh wow, I feel your pain! My parents came to visit me, after I had lost 200 pounds, and my mom saw me mixing the essential amino acid supplement that I take daily (as recommended by my PCP). She looked at the label and said, “You know that has CALORIES?!” Five. It has five calories in a scoop. And thanks, mom, I lost 200 pounds without your help but I still need you to micromanage my calories. I guess some moms just can’t help themselves. Most of the time — and I think this is true in your case and mine — they have good intentions but no idea how harmful they can be. My mom put me on the path of yo-yo dieting from my pre-teen years. I’m sure she just wanted me to be healthy and never anticipated that the yo-yo dieting would contribute to long-term weight gain. So I feel free to ignore her comments.

    Dealing with others (especially family) who don’t fully get it can be challenging, frustrating & upsetting. They’re trying to be supportive but … I remember my mum saying in frustration she didn’t know what I ate anymore & didn’t know what to have in the house when I visited. Well I ate pretty much what she did & did all the cooking when I was there but she felt lost, confused & didn’t want to jeopardise my weight loss. Maybe this is where your Mum’s coming from. Have you tried sitting her down with your program & going through it with her or even attending one of your dietician appointments. Remind her no one diet works for everyone because how bodies have different require to to function effectively & well. Your program has been designed to support your recovery & healing from surgery, to introduce healthy, nutrient dense foods to benefit your weight loss & health, & can be modified to meet any specific needs you might have. Can’t hurt. While sugar free popsicles are allowed I wonder if eating 4, 5 or more are too many in a day. Yes, they have no added sugar but they have artificial sweeteners which continue to feed your desire/craving for sweet. Also many develop an intolerance to sweeteners (particularly the alcohol sugars - end in ‘ol’) & over consuming may increase your risk. Try reducing how many you have each day & swap in alternative fluids like protein waters, green or herbal teas, etc. Worth a chat with your dietician but it is your choice.

    And adding to @SpartanMaker’s post, the area you carried more weight will be the slowest place to lose. Be it abdominal weight or the weight in your butt & thighs it’s where ever you have the most fat to lose. Take some body measurements - sometimes the number on the tape measure will reveal more of what you’ve lost than looking in the mirror or the fit of clothing.

    Before and After Pics

    Facebook memories showed me this Christmas picture from five years ago. While not my highest weight, there's definitely a difference to be seen. So here's the five years ago pic, one from April of this year (5 months PRE OP), and one from today (3 months POST OP). I don't smile with teeth often, so hopefully that awkwardness doesn't show lol.
  10. I’m 7 yes post op and have had to have a few teeth pulled due to cavities. Although I’m religious about brushing and flossing. I think the surgery probably has a small bit to do with it but for me at least it’s genetic. I have since gotten a partial denture. Hair loss after WLS is not uncommon and as I found out in my follow up with my program today it is common to happen again if you’re not keeping up with your protein. My biggest piece of advice is to keep your follow up appointments that are recommended by your program. I didn’t and have struggled with the rollercoaster of losing and gaining I had before. Thankfully I’m back in the program though not necessarily for another surgery but to get things going in the right direction. Good luck to you!!
  11. Hi All, I had lap band surgery in 2009 when I was 22. I lost 100lbs in 3yrs and had a normal bmi. Over the years I've gained 70lbs back and the lap band is a pain. I have a conversion consult on Wednesday. I've always thought I wanted to go with the sleeve but I now know a few people who haven't had great success with it. I know a couple with bypass who look great and are very happy. I'm wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation or has any thoughts/advice? Thanks!   12. are you doing any weight management appointments with a dr or nutritionalist? if that’s their denial reason, then it won’t hurt for you to do it while it gets sorted out.. may be able to manage GERD better in the meantime if a nutritionist who understands consults with you.. drs offices deal with denials all the time and are good at sorting it out, especially if you do everything you can to speed it up on your end

    give him a list of makeup you like or want (very specific he will appreciate knowing exactly what), hair ties, hair brush, hair conditioning deep treatment, face masks, you could give him a list of good sugar free candy, little framed picture, jewelry (can be cute an inexpensive), gum if you can have it, hydrocolloid acne patches of weight loss is making you break out, or your on little tool set to keep in your car!
  14. I paid for my surgery, but knew I was investing in my health and it will make up for it. So far our grocery trip is lasting almost 3 weeks and if I wanted I can make it to the month, since I can't have produce/fruits yet, and 1lb of protein is good for 10 meals, so I'm freezing some portions and my husband is eating from the protein I make. My blood pressure med is back to 5mg so my prescription of 3 months is going to last 6, have not been out to eat since Oct and even then I had started to only eat half of my portion and taking the rest home. I stopped drinking few weeks before surgery so we no longer have 2 boxes of beer in the pantry, no unhealthy snacks, or bread that goes bad. On the other side, my self esteem is coming back awd with that the wanting to shop lol but I have some clothes that do not fit and are new that I will wear till I hit the 100s, will mainly need bottoms, but once goal weight is hit, all bets are off [emoji1787] Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. I don't know about this company or policy in particular, but many won't approve revisions for weight gain. Some, however, approve them if there are medical issues. Since you've had issues with GERD and high blood pressure, that *might* be enough for some companies -but again, not all companies approve revisions. I wonder if a doctor could have a peer-to-peer review with them. Although your current surgeon isn't in your network, so that might be an issue - is there a bariatric surgeon who's in your network that you could do a consultation with?
  16. Hello everyone, I’ve gone through the long process of trying to get a revision surgery after gaining most of the weight back after having the sleeve in 2014. I’ve had mental health issues in the years following and also developed GERD and High blood pressure in the recent years since. The insurance company (BCBS of North Carolina) has been giving me issues from the start first saying that my surgeon wasn’t in network so they wouldn’t cover the surgery. Upon further investigation from my doctors office the real issue was them denying my claim for a revision because there was a lack of evidence showing that I followed proper diet and exercise after my first surgery. Has any experienced something similar? I have the two comorbidities and my bmi is currently 45 so I’m just kinda in shock they denied me especially without even informing me.

    It can be a shock when you see the higher number on the scales, but fluctuations happen when you’re losing & when your weight is stable too . Fluid retention, constipation, hormones, just because our bodies can be weird can contribute. It could even be your scales - uneven surface, failing battery, etc. I’ve posted this before but my scales read this a couple of months ago. It initially read more than 150kg - 3x my weight. So yes, heart palpitations & a second or two of thinking how the &**##$ did I put on that much weight before I regained my senses. Replaced the batteries which saw the 136kg weight but turned out the scales were dying.

    Fighting Depression and Mental Exhaustion

    I told my wife before I had surgery that I would at some point or another regret my decision. I told her that her job was to remind me why it did it in the first place. Thankfully I didn't have to rely on her reminders too much, but there were definitely some times when I questioned if it was worth it. The good news is it does get easier and the bad days are a lot more rare now. I mention this because I think it's important to remember that some of the best things in life are also REALLY hard. Losing weight, whether it's with or without surgery is one of those hard, but ultimately satisfying things. Part of that satisfaction comes from knowing you endured the trial and came out a better person on the other side. I"m now coming up on 3 months post op and I can legitimately say that even though I still struggle sometimes, living with WLS is so much easier now than it was at 4 weeks. You can do it, but you just have to grin and bear it for a while. These sayings may sound trite, but reminding myself that "This too shall pass", and "It's a marathon, not a sprint" are what got me through the hard days.

    This flu has GOT TO GO!!!

    I'm finally able to keep a little food down and the head cold part is easing up. This chest cold, tho. Lord have mercy. It's just settled right in. I weighed myself today and I lost 5 pounds in 5 days from being so sick. I could only hold down liquids and protein shakes. I'm all for losing weight, but not like that. As I slooowly integrate food back in my diet again, I'm sure I'll put those 5 pounds back on. But that's actually ok. I want to lose the right way. I still can't work out, but maybe things will start to turn around before long. I just want to feel better. I really miss working out. But I have an appt on Monday with my doctor. If my coughing and breathing don't get any better by then, I have to go get xrays of my chest and get put on a nebulizer, steroids, and whatever else. Again. So working out is definitely not in the cards for a while. Grrrr.....

I am going on vacation at the end of this month and I wanted to if there is anything you recommend I bring so that I can stay on track for my weight loss journey, I also wanted to see whether drinking while on my vacation is something I can do. It is my first time traveling since surgery and I am nervous.

    I've learned to only weigh myself once a week now because sometimes water weight can make a 2-4 pound fluctuation, and it'll drive ya nuts lol Watch salt intake and I bet it'll go away soon. Water weight sucks.

    Weight gain & Health Issues

    You have to go into it looking at the surgery as a *tool* not a cure. A lot of the people who gain the weight back, as others have said, did not change their lifestyle. The surgery is permanent; you have to look at any behavioral changes you make as permanent as well. It's like that old saying, "If you do what you always did, you will get what you always got". I am 15 mos post op, and I am fully aware that if I were to slip back to old habits, I am absolutely capable of eating enough to gain back my weight, but I'm committed to doing this *for life*. My hair fell out between months 2 and 4 really badly, I lost MOST of my hair. It started growing back around the six month mark and I now have a lot more hair than I did even before the surgery. I have had some of the "weakness" others have had (specifically my grip is not as strong as it once was for things like opening jars). Considering I had dangerously high blood pressure (it's on the low end of normal now), sleep apnea (GONE 3 months after surgery), and was dangerously close to developing diabetes and knee problems, I would have the surgery again in a heartbeat. My only regret is that I didn't have it sooner. I am finally capable of doing everything I wanted to be able to do when I was fat and couldn't. That's worth the work. It's worth the sacrifice and if you want to make that change for yourself, YOU are worth it.
