  1. I had lapband surgery in August of 2008. I only ever lost 35 lbs. About two years in, half of my band collapsed and wouldn’t hold fluid at all. In 2015 I went to the doc for a revision to sleeve. My doc would not convert from band to sleeve due to increased leak risk. He recommended bypass and my insurance quickly approved. I didn’t want bypass and didn’t go through with it. I tried keto and lost 50 lbs. I didn’t keep it off and was back up to 285 which was my initial band weight the first of this year. I decided to have bypass this year and had to fight insurance for 5 months which was crazy because I was in the same position I was in in 2015. On July 2nd I had my band removed, bypass and my gallbladder removed. I stayed one night in the hospital and went back to work part time a week later and full time a week after that. I’m due to start any diet I want this weekend. This surgery has been a walk in the park for me. No problems at all and finally no stuck food in my throat! I’ve lost 18 lbs and am excited for what’s to come. Why did I wait so long?! If you are on the fence do it ... your life will be so much better. =)
  2. I was approved with UHC on my first submit. I have the lapband and esophagus issues. I went in for a fill, took a barium test and found issues with my esophagus/swallowing. Since last summer I've slowly been gaining weight. I've been eating great, excising, active, etc. EVERYTHING the same. I'm around 170 but was 135-140 since being banded (SW:230lbs) Dec 2011. My Dr. submitted me for removal and revision in early July. I was approved 11 days later for both. My insurance for the band was BCBS but UHC covers me now. I was really expecting to go through the peer to peer review. I do have high BP and now have a hiatal hernia due to the weight gain...I'm total apple shape. Stay on them! Good luck. You're doing the right thing. The Lapband is starting to show the long term affects...I wonder why there's no class action. Insurance sure knows the failure rates are at an all time high. It's even in their best interest to approve. They'll end up spending so much more, at least on me. Isn't healthcare all about preventive care? There is no way in hell I was taking it out without revising to something else. Getting to my normal weight has changed my life in ways I never thought possible. Keep me posted. I'd like to know if you win your appeal/case.

    Anyone been this sick?

Summertime, I will add that at 8 weeks you will need to try and get past the first 6 months at least and listen to your physicians as a lot can change in the first 6 months. I thought I was doing okay as the weight feel off so rapidly and then realized something else was wrong which led to the first surgery in October and then another surgery in Feb this year with a bowel revision. Over 15K into this even with insurance and cannot continue the financial strain.
  4. I still don't feel "Full" like ever. I do get to a point where I'm just done. It's an odd sensation really, nothing physical exactly... but when I'm done... I'm just done. Not 100% sure why that is, could be the band to bypass revision, not sure. But it's amazing how much everyone differs with their sensations.
  5. I just postponed my surgery by 3 weeks switching my decision from RNY to DS. I feel the DS will help me maintain the weight loss, where many RNYers battle regain after a few to several years. Since you're revisioning, you may find weight loss more difficult than someone who is getting a new fresh surgery - so you may want to opt for the more powerful bariatric procedure. If it were me, I'd weight and get the superior surgery (for you). Your surgeon told you he feels the DS is better for you - I'd go with his professional recommendation.
  6. Hi everyone . I’m being revised due to a slip and intolerance to a ten yo band to rny in 2 weeks . My doctor only asked that my pre op diet be low carb and high protein which to them is probably 25-30 carbs a day. I’m a raging type 2 diabetic. No longer on insulin since my band ten years ago and my A1C is only about a 7 right now but I take 1000mg of metformin , and two other diabetes meds ; one as needed if I eat too many carbs (prandin) and a daily before I eat morning one (invokana) But forcing myself to eat this super low in carbs will crash me and have me feeling sickly or hospitalized I’m sure . Wondering if I should just wean off of it and just take the regular metformin for now . I see my surgeon next Wednesday on the 31st for anpre op appt as my rny is scheduled August 9.

I would love to know as well... can’t seem to find a revision forum here...
  9. I’m getting a revision from sleeve to bypass next month. I’m a self pay. I went for pre op at Crestwood Hospital in Huntsville. I wanted to get the final price for my Hospital stay before I made a certified check to the hospital. At first they quoted me 6000.00 when I called they said they made a mistake and that was for a bypass the correct price was 8000.00. I said ok. When i was at pre op I asked the registration person about it . I told her i was gettin a conversion to bypass. She called her supervisor and she said it was 8 grand. She wrote this down and put the supervisor name on a paper and gave this to me. I was at work and i got a call saying no that was incorrect it was 10,500. I was upset. The lowered the price down to 9500.00 after they saw I was so upset. Would you take that lower figure or try to go for anything lower. Actually the person on the phone said we don’t quote prices . When in fact the supervisor that the registration person called that gave the 8grand figure was the person that is trying to tell me now that it’s really 10,500.00
  10. I'm the same height, my overall heaviest was 370 back in 2010, But I'm a bit younger, I'll be 40 in March. I was banded in 2011, lost 70ish then struggled to lose anything else and I ended up in the gain / lose cycle, stuck around 300-310. I was revised to the bypass March 21st of this year and I'm down another 70 lbs or so. I'm down to 240ish right now. The amount of extra skin isn't too bad, I wear khaki's and a polo to work daily and the extra stomach skin is really well hidden. I went from a tight size 50 pant, worn below my gut line to a comfortably loose 40 worn at my actual waist line. Compression gear works great, I use it for the gym so I can run without too much jiggling and bouncing. I don't bother to wear it all day long since most of the extra skin is easy to hide. With Compression gear, don't spend too much on stuff at first, I made that mistake and now I've got "compression" gear that's too big to compress anything. You want to buy compression clothes 1 size smaller than your current size.
  11. I was a band to bypass revision as well. Best thing I've ever done! Recovery was pretty damn easy for me as well, not sure if it was because of all the tricks I learned post op with the band or what but it was very easy to heal the bypass. How long you stay is going to depend on the doctor, hospital and your insurance. I was in for 3 days 2 nights including the day of surgery.
  12. I had a lap band ten years ago , I was successful even through a lot of intolerance. It has slipped and even though I lost 85% of my weight and regained some after triplets 5 years ago I’m still riddled with diabetes etc. so because of the hormonal component the rny is happening on August 9 and band being removed . I even had to gain like 15lbs to be the right BMI (ugh) But I don’t really remember the pain. I remember some and recovered fast . I’m anxious to never feeling stuck again and never feeling this port in my abdomen but I’m just nervous of how I will feel already being anemic and having three 5yos . The surgery the day before kindergarten starts :( I’m also hangry since now that I’m approved and on a low carb diet until surgery and low carbing stinks . How long will I stay ? I just stayed overnight with a band .
  13. I had the band for over 6 years, didn't have any major issues, I got stuck a lot, leafy greens hurt to eat, stalled out with the weight loss really hard. It just wasn't working. The Barium swallow and fluoroscope didn't show any issues, but when my surgeon went to take the band out, it was 100% completely encapsulated in scar tissue. It took them 3+ hours to get it out when it normally takes less than an hour. I'm glad I was revised to the bypass, who knows what would have happened if I left that band in there.

    What to tell coworkers?

I've told very few people and only one person from work, whom I can trust to not say anything about it. My supervisor only knows that I'll be having surgery, and he thinks it's for a revision for the major abdominal surgery I had last August. This is partially true because I'll be having the verticle sleeve gastrectomy and the revision surgery at the same time. I was out for six months last year after surgery so he's not expecting me to come back quickly. When I do return, I know people will have questions about my weight loss. I'll just say I got with a nutritionist and a personal trainer and starting eating much better and exercising more. None of these statements is a lie (except for the trainer, since I have not hired one yet...) It is your business. It is up to you to tell people or not, not up to them. Don't ever let anyone pressure you into telling them more than you want to say. Good luck!
  15. I would go with what your research and feelings tells you is the best for you in the long term. The surgeries have different "personalities" that make them a better fit for some than others; get the wrong one for you and you can wind up dissatisfied with the results and headed for a revision. If you feel that you need the extra strength and regain resistance of the DS, then the RNY is not a substitute, and revising that to a DS is no simple matter (there are only a handful of surgeons around with the skills and experience to perform those. I have seen a couple of band to RNY to DS patients come through our support group and they obviously wished that they had done the DS in the first place (but didn't really know about it, or were persuaded by their surgeon to do the bypass since they didn't perform the DS. Since you are well aware of the DS and have the option available, you are in a good position to make a well informed choice as to what is likely best for your needs. Note that my wife has a DS (13+ years post op) so I know well it's ups and downs, and it was the right move for her. I went with the VSG as that better fit my needs, so it is an individual situation. If you have already decided on the DS, think about whether your long term needs would be overly compromised by going with what is more convenient in the short term.
  16. @rebchiefI love the Syntrax Nectar Line and the Pure Protein bar but the ONLY flavor I like is the chocolate salted caramel. The other flavors, I was not a fan! There is so much out there. It's pretty much trial and error and stick with what you like Good luck Friday. I have my revision tomorrow.
  17. I had the band installed in 2011. I did ok with it, had lots of little problems, and in the long run I lost 70ish and that was it. I had the band removed and revised to the bypass on the 21st of March of this year. Down 69.1 lbs since starting my pre-op diet. I'm the lowest weight I've been in like 18 years. I honestly wish I went with the bypass instead of the band back in 2011. Very happy with the bypass thus far.
  18. I was set up to have the DS on AUG 13th, but I may go for the RNY do to my doctor just had spinal surgery and he is saying that he will not be physically capable of performing the DS by my surgery date. I can push the date out and have the DS done, but all of my support from family flying in and papers have been set for my current date and they are very hard to change. My Surgery is Aug 13th. And I was excited til today. My Surgeon is basically putting it in my hands to choose. He says that the DS would be better for me. But because there may be complications do to the band not easy to remove that he may not be able to put the sleeve part of the DS and he would probably have to do the RNY anyway. I was mentally prepared for the DS, but now I’m conflicted. I really don’t want to push out my date again.

    Psych eval

I would try and see if your team could recommend another therapist that was closer to you and covered via insurance (if that’s your route). It all varies. For my sleeve surgery I just went to a licensed counselor/social worker & for my revision I had to see a psychotherapist whom literally followed a list of questions from the bariatric team. I thought the social worker wa better than the therapist lol. the only way I would go see someone 2 hours away is if the team said it was deal or no deal and it were the only way I would get approved.

Heyy I just had my revision from the sleeve to gastric bypass. And I was wondering has your doctor given you the option to make your pouch smaller? Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
