I'm pre-op, but I know I will feel uncomfortable in these situations after surgery. I started seeing a counselor a couple of months ago. I figured that it couldn't hurt to get a jump start on my emotional eating issues. She has been amazing! We just talked about being "invisible" as an overweight person and what it will mean to be "visible" again after losing the weight. I never thought about it like that before, but being overweight is one of my buffers or protections from everyone else. It's kinda scary to think of losing that. I definitely recommend counseling for bariatric patients because the surgery helps with the physical part of overeating, but doesn't address the mental side of things (why we eat). There are also some great books out there too.

post op from April 29th

Jcollins You will be fine. Remember to read and refer often to your bariatric manual and follow your physicians specific instructions. We have to study now while we can eat very little so we will have it all down pat when we can eat. We need to eat slowly over 30 min. Then we will feel the compression of the sleeve. Sip sip sip all day to get your fluids and protein in. They will help you feel good by keeping you hydrated, helping you heal, and prevent you from having a large though temporary hair loss. -
Late decision change.

I will stay with both, but he will be the go to since quite frankly PCPs do not understand the needs of post bariatric patients as well as the surgeon does. -
My surgery is at MedStar Washington. My PCP recommended their Bariatric program which has taught me a LOT through their group workshops.

Well, there are 2 kinds of laxatives: osmotic and stimulants. Epsom salt is essentially magnesium sulfate, an osmotic laxative that replaces magnesium in the body and essentially causes your GI system to pull more fluids into the poop so you can pass it easier. Think stool softeners: colace and Miralax. I assume she cringed or made a face because use of Epsom salt isn't something we hear too much of in this day/age of products like Miralax. Also, using Epsom salt as a laxative can cause magnesium imbalance (needed for muscle contractions), increases your need for water, and can lead to dehydration if you're not careful. Just from reading all the frequent posts on BP about constipation and how to fight it, everyone has their own method that works for them. Until then, I think we all have a certain amount of anxiety with BMs. Me, I make sure I take a fiber supplement every day and I drink lots of water. If I miss more than a day, I will take a low dose dulcolax just to keep things moving. I do not wait. Waiting only increases discomfort and makes things more difficult to resolve. *In my first month or 2 after being sleeved, I used milk of magnesia for the same purpose as the dulcolax. I DID NOT want to have to strain with those first few! both Dulcolax and MOM are stimulant laxatives=stimulates the muscle of the intestines to push things along. I've heard lots of bariatric patients promote Smooth Move Tea. I haven't tried it, but I've had other teas like it. They are also stimulant laxatives and rather powerful ones if you steep the tea long enough. Hope this was helpful!

Looking for other Anthem Blue Cross PPO experiences.
🅺🅸🅼🅼🅸🅴🅺 posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
My company was bought and our insurance will change to Anthem Blue Cross in January. The plan is called Prudent Buyer. My new employer is California based however I live in Texas. We haven’t enrolled in our selected plans yet however my HR person gave me the EOC for this year explaining all the coverage and stated nothing will change. Bariatric is covered and the only stipulation is that it must be deemed medically necessary and performed at a BDCSC facility. There are absolutely no other requirements listed like wait times, nutrition visits, etc. Anyone else have experience with this plan? -
Scared And Second Guessing For First Time

I see you chose Dr. Josh Roller!! Awesome choice! I decided on Dr. John Baker in Little Rock..! I live in Southeast Arkansas so it was a given that I went with him.. I was very comfortable with his advice. He's actually a teacher/trainer in laparoscopy right here in arkansas... many bariatric surgeons from different regions come to train with him. Aside from researching him in general, I have to say that was the MAIN reason I chose him... -
That was basically the sensation I recall experiencing when I was first diagnosed with acid reflux...though that was a number of years prior to having my band placed. I'm not certain what a bariatric surgeon would advise. My doctors have advised me to continue to take Prevacid daily as I've done for years.

Welcome to both of you. I HIGHLY recommend you read this site. There is a ton of information here. Once you have read a good bit, feel free to post specific questions. It usually helps to start a thread with a title for your specific question so it is easy to find. You will get more answers that way. I also recommend you write everything down (if you memory is anything like mine, it helps to record everything). Keep a running list of questions for your surgeon and bariatric team. They will also probably give you a notebook or binder. If not, you will want to get one to keep all of the paperwork handy. Be prepared to practice polite persistence, patience, perseverance, and positivity. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

My advice...or at least what I was advised - As far as Vitamins, I was told to stick with the chewables for life, since the solid pills may pass through your sleeve before being fully absorbed. I was using the Centrum chewables based on the recommendation of my surgeon...he said this one was the most complete. As far as calcium, I was told to stay away from any calcium carbonate, and find only the calcium citrate. The Bariatric Advantage chewables worked really well for me until I started using the Nascobal Nasal spray for my B12. This is a mail order Rx, and it comes with a multivitamin, Iron, and calcium - all chewable - and it's nice and convenient.

HCP Kaiser - What to expect?
VSG for ALC replied to LoveMyBypass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Kaiser's bariatric program is called Options. It is a 12 week program. During the program you are required to lose some weight and do lots of tests like an EKG, A1c if you're Diabetic, a stool test, and lots and lots of blood tests. I actually enjoyed the program because you meet bi-weekly with others who are going through the same process so you have people to connect with and relate to. Good luck. The process goes faster than it sounds. -
GOOD Lap Band surgeon in Salt Lake City area?????
VegasGrace replied to elvisgirl77's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Fill Centers USA - Weight Loss Surgery - Bariatric Surgery - Gastric Bypass Surgery - Lap Band Surgery Information and Support is their website, but just went and found it not working... did yesterday! oh, well, maybe down for site maintenance. Fill Centers require the provider charge: (going from memory) $299 for the first visit and includes fill $1?? maybe 125 or 150 or 199 - can't remember for all other subsequent visits and includes a fill Fluro costs like $80 extra, no matter if it's first or subsequent visit. Any time you need an 'unfill adjustment' if you notify fillcentersusa w/in a week, or 3 days, it's FREE as long as you go back w/in 3 weeks (or something like that) and if you need just a visit w/o adjustments, it's $75. I will post a thread on how my first visit with them goes. Have your friend call Highland Family Practice and see how much an adjustment is w/ Dr. Muse... maybe a better rate is used if not going thru fillcentersusa. Maybe not! He can always go thru the fillcentersusa if prices are too high. Good luck! -
I agree with Jacqui; we need adult Vitamins, preferably bariatric ones designed for bandsters. (Jacqui, I hope you're feeling as well as can be expected; you are often in my thoughts and prayers.)

My surgical weight loss center sucked! The girl that handled insurance couldn't even get the right documents faxed to the insurance company. I eventually just faxed the missing documents to the insurance company myself. Then after surgery I never saw my surgeon for follow ups - I always got stuck with some fill in doctor. In truth unfortunately most businesses today have zero customer service and suck. Bariatric surgery is a business and they are there to take your money. Don't let a crappy doctors office make you feel like giving up. Be strong and fight for your health! You got this!

I sounds to me like you Live in either Windsor or Niagra area, being that close to the states. I read about a bariatric clinic in detroit that does the LAPBand for 11K U.s. dollars, which is cheaper than TLBC in Ontario. 16K Canadian. With the Cdn dollar at 95~ US its a good time to go there speaking money wise only. A good friend of mine got her SUrgery (RNY Bypass) done in Ypsilanti Michigan at the Barix Clinic there... THEY WERE FANTASTIC... but I don't know what they charge for pay as you go Canadians for the LapBand. But while WE were waiting in the patient lounge HALF of all the folks we talked to were from all over Ontario... Just a thought. Good luck to you in what ever you decide. I am going to TLBC,my surg. in July 11th ( booked, paid and in in under 2 wks!) whew!

Aetna changes 5 year weight history requirement to 2 years.

you go to the main site, aetna.com, then in the "search" field you type in "bariatric surgery" - otherwise it wont come up or you have to search through pages of crap. -
Hey Tully, If you ring the Centre for Bariatric Surgery (95209520) they will tell you when their next information night is on. It is usually held on a Tuesday night at the Royce hotel on St Kilda Road. During the night they discuss ALL aspects of the band pre and post Op and you can ask questions. they have success stories come in and speak as well. They also give you a book which has all the information regarding the Lapband and it is a great reference point. I was re-reading mine today. You cannot see a surgeon from centre of bariatric without having attended the info night. you also need a referral from a GP. I suppose that weeds out people who aren't really serious. If it helps to know, I was REALLY stressing about the money. One main income and 2 small kids, mortgage, blah blah blah. But I still went and saw the surgeon for the initial consult ($100) just to start the ball rolling and take the first GIANT step towards what I wanted to do. My surgeon discussed going on the waiting list which I did. His opinion was, that if I was going to have to wait until I had the money to go private, that I may as well go on the list for the off-chance that a spot appeared in the public list in the meantime. What I found after having that first consultation was that I didn't want to wait at all and I researched EVERY possible way to get the money. One of the things you can do is access your Super to have the Op. I think it is a bit of stuffing around, but ultimately worth. The nurse at the CBS told me about it. At the end of the day, if a Doctor/s told you that you needed Heart surgery, you wouldnt think twice about finding the money! It is an investment in your future!! IT is not a vanity/cosmetic procedure - it is for your health. It took me a long time to get my head around it (I researched this for 18 months before I took the first step), but it is honestly the best thing I have done for myself ever. I will now get off my self-elevated Lapband high horse and let you think about it!! Feel free to tell me to jam it if you think i'm a bit too full on. SeeYa Megs

Calcium Citrate chewable--Which one taste the best?
ThatDudesMom replied to Penpen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love Bariatric Chews (not chewable). The berry and lemon are like starburst and the chocolate is like a tootsie roll. No funky side flavor, after-taste, film, just a good chewy. I do have to say however, that I was eating all four at one time, and then my doctor told me to spread them out so that my body could absorb them better. GNC also has a carmel chew that I like...if I recall correctly, you take two a day. -
Calcium Citrate chewable--Which one taste the best?
Chicadee replied to Penpen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like the Bariatric Advantage Chews as well. I have lemon and berry and they are great, like eating a starburst. I have never tried the caramel but I am a caramel lover so I may have find them and give them a shot. -
Not sure who my surgeon is yet. It will be one of the two docs that are affiliated with the Baptist Hospital Bariatric department. I have my first seminar this Tuesday. I am just hoping that my insurance will approve the surgery = )

Anyone else not feeling a "burst of energy"?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to d258's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What kind of vitamins are you taking? Some of the high potency bariatric vitamins make me nauseous. I have better luck with regular vitamins: instead of taking one big pill. -
With surgery approaching am I really ready?
Daisee68 replied to HopeandAgony's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Completely normal! I even questioned it AFTER the surgery for a while. Like everyone else said though, it is the best decision I ever made. You just have to get through the first few weeks and then you will see. If you aren't seeing a therapist already, consider doing so - at least once before surgery (though I recommend seeing them continually after surgery). They can help you work through these feelings. PS Make sure it is someone that works with bariatric patients. The last thing you need is talking to someone who isn't a fan of WLS confusing you! -
Hi Shauna. How exciting! You’re Bariatric Adventure started in January and it’s getting more thrilling. I was on cloud nine for awhile after my surgery. Welcome...and I hope it all goes great for you. 🌺
