    Weight Loss

Agree 100% with this post. Everyone's body is different; age, start-weight, etc are all factors. People put start weight, lost weight stats etc and I never knew how to calculate that my first month post-op. My start weight was much, much higher then yours and I lost before the surgery, had complications with massive swelling, gained 13 lbs from the surgery, nothing but a couple lbs the week after (miserable!) the 3 weeks out started losing like close to 20 lbs in just a week (the swelling went down completely and lost the surgery weight I had gained). I've lost very quickly since then but other conditions affect that as well. Also, inches count! Now, at 4 months out with a new job this last month that is VERY physical labor in a factory have contributed to lbs not going down but my pants are falling and inches are going down. You can't go bad with this really. Just give it time and be patient honestly-you'll be feeling good in no time and feeling the weight loss more as you heal and get into a more normal way of life.
  2. You have gotten great advice and encouragement. My 2 cents is to start excersising if your not already. Start slow and gradually increase the duration/intensity. If you already are working out, increase the intensity/duration or change up what your doing (if your walking try swimming for example). It has so many benefits, just one being weight loss. You can do this!
  3. just wanted to update and give some thoughts dont judge or be negative because these are just my opinions. everyone is different it has been just shy of one year and i have lost 100 pounds and i truly regret getting the lap band, it has not helped anywhere near what i thought it would of.yes i have been following the rules and getting fills and check up regularly so it is not that, it is just the simple fact that it has not helped me as much as i thought it should. On a percent basis i say the band did 10% (maybe even less) the check ups did 10% (i never wanted to go back and not be at least a couple pounds down so it forced me to go work out) and then my own will power and mind set 80% i still have another 60-80 pounds (havent decided final goal) to go and just like every other time i have dieted and exercised i am losing that motivation and fear gaining the weight back or being stuck right where i am... still fat, overweight and obese. the two main regrets i have with the band now besides it not working like it should (which i do have good restriction maybe even a little too tight) is that you can still easily eat around the band if you want and intake quite a bit of calories. it almost has had a reverse effect on me mentally instead of my mind reteaching myself to stay away i have just found different ways to satisfy the cravings. the second thing is long term concerns with the band and port, every day i stress if its slipping or the port has flipped because of the horror stories you read, and the fact that i now have foreign items inside my body. the insurance is getting worse so if anything ever does happen i dont know how i will afford the surgery if it does need to be taken out. i know that any weight loss surgery is not a quick easy fix and that it is just a tool and its only as good as you use it but for me the band was not the right choice it works too slow and not helpful enough. i easily could of gotten the same results with out implanting this into my stomach if i would of just motivated myself and hired a trainer and nutritionist. to make me accountable.

    Average weight loss

I've lost just short of 50 lbs in 30 weeks.... with sporadic exercise.....falling back a little over the festive season as still fiesta here in Spain today and the local pool is shut, but all in all I am still very pleased with the rate of my weight loss.
  5. Seriously? I was averaging 675 cal when I reached goal at just under 5 months. My dietitian told me to increase my caloric intake to between 800 and 1200 to "maintain". She said I'd have to 'find what worked for me". I'm telling you, increasing the calories was NOT easy....who knew THIS would be the hard part??!! I've been working at this since the first week of Nov. and it seems that 975 - 1050 calories is what works for me. I am not sure I'd have reached goal and certainly not as quickly had I been eating 1000 - 1200 calories the entire time. At 8 weeks out......there is NO way I could have been taking in that many calories unless I was drinking chocolate milk shakes instead of Protein drinks. Cream gravy made with whole milk instead of 98% FF soup!!! At 8 weeks out I did good to eat 1.5 of food at a time!! I got ALL my protein in from about week three and starting at month 2 I got it ALL from food. I have never had a hair problem and I have NEVER thrown up.....this has been disgustingly easy and healthy. If he said up to 1200 at 8 weeks, WHAT will he suggest when you are at 6 months and what will he want you taking in when you are maintaining??!! That would be my question? I was on a 1800 calorie a day diet one time several years ago before surgery, which is not really abnormal for a 'normal' person.
  6. Hi, I think your have a fantastic attitude. The last thing we need is to beat ourselves up over how fast or slow we are going. You are having great success right now. We have NEVER had this kind of success before with anything else we have tried. When you lose it slow like this it will be much easier to maintain your weight loss. NEVER give up on your dreams. We are human and we aren't like anyone else--thank goodness. I happen to love who I am and the way I am. It took me a lot of years to say to heck with everyone else. It is "MY" turn in life to take care of me. I raised my family and now it was my turn in life to do the things I needed for me. And I have earned the right to do this. So this is your turn in life and you have earned the right to do what ever you need to do to achieve your goal. You go girls and NEVER look back. I have NO regrets for what I have done when it comes WLS. Hugs, Suzanne

    Good Scales?

I have the scale " EatSmart Precision Digital Scale" mentioned by "Bufflefhead" and she is right its a great scale and not too pricey and I also got it from Amazon (I get everything from Amazon LOL) The scale is precise, my weight loss surgeon scale notes the same poundage every time as this scale so I know its on point. Good Luck!

    Hate to eat

19 days post op and feel that way daily. I have NO appetite. I am eating some soft foods, but have no desire for them. I have now gone 4 days without all of my protien....... I also have only lost FIVE pounds in 19 days, and have been in a stall for 7 days. I dont have a loss of energy, nor do I feel sick.... I just have NO appetite.

    My Journey

It is always difficult when people ask "how did you lose that weight?".. I started this process by being honest... but that is just me.. If you are different and want to be more private than that is okay too... but you have nothing to feel guilty about.. You made the choice to lose weight and get healthy for you not for other people.. I have found a plus to being honest..Several of my friends and acquaintances who have weight issues have asked me about my loss and I told them I had lapband surgery.. the result is 2 of them are now seeking counseling for surgery... I am proud that I can be a positive force for them.. I still have 20 lbs to lose and I know it will be slow but I am content for the first time in years.. I don't stress about eating the wrong thing and I am enjoying life .. Being able to move and do things like normal people is the big plus to having band surgery for me...

    This feeling ...

Don't feel bad about not tracking. I didn't track for the VAST majority of my weight loss phase either. Tracking is just a tool to help figure out what's going right or wrong. If things are moving along, I don't see any need to track daily. I started tracking again recently because I'm training for a half marathon and started losing weight again (I'm in maintenance), so I'm using tracking right now to make sure I'm eating enough. Like I said, just a tool to help assess when assessment is needed. Were you told by your surgeon or nutritionist not to snack? If I didn't snack, there is no way I could get in enough calories to sustain me. At best I eat about 200 calories at a time. If I REALLY push the carbs or fat I could maybe get up to 400 calories in one sitting, but I would have to sacrifice Protein. Eating only 3 times a day, even if I could get in 400 calories each time, that would only be 1200 calories day. Over the past 37 days (since I got my FitBit Blaze), I have averaged a calorie burn of 2366 calories. Remember, I'm training for a half marathon. Snacking is the only thing keeping me alive! But even in my "rest" days from my half marathon training, I burn a good 1800-1900 calories. So 1200 still would be nowhere near enough. My nutritionist initially told me to eat 5-6 times a day. Now, I'm eating more like 7-8.

    What was your turning point?

For me, it was my BMI getting to almost 40 - I set that as the "diving line" that would make me decide to do something drastic. It was alarming to see my weight continue to creep up higher over the years, matter what I did. So I had set "my BMI getting to 40" as a personal "turning point" but before it got there, I figured out at a BMI of 38, that I wasn't going to lose it without surgery. I had been on every diet, did the gym, starved myself silly - nothing worked for long. I got approved for Weight Loss Surgery at a BMI of 38 and still the fight goes on. So that's what did it for me. Happy Band (and UnBanded) Journeys to all, New Sho
  17. I'm happy with my weight loss to date and I've had to weed out all my 18's, 20's & 22's because I'm wearing 16's now and I just don't know what to do with all the ones that are too big. I've got to get the closet cleaned out so that I can go shopping. I'm looking for suggestions as to what "the experts" have done with theirs when they got too skinny to fit into them anymore. Thanks in advance.

Who's 4 months post op? I want stats!

That's awesome! I lost nothing on my 2 week liquid pre op. I have no thyroid either. The struggle has been real. I feel very good. THANK GOD because my job is hard and I have to make money. I'm 5'3 super short haha so I'm just a short chunk. My face has thinned out the most. I'm so happy for your loss!!! Are you feeling proud and good? So the first 3 months I sucked at eating real foods. I was content with shakes. Now I'm feeling like i have hunger and I crave more foods. I was hoping that was gone. Lol nope it's back. I have been following basically keto with 2 shakes a day. I find myself eating alot nuts and soft meats. Plus 2 premier shakes. When I crave sweets I blend peanut butter, ice and protein shake together. Holy **** its delicious![emoji23] Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. Weight loss hasnt changed my life in a lot of ways - the same problems I always had have remained, not that I'm not a very fortunate person. Surprisingly weight loss hasnt magically meant i have the money to spend on tons of clothes, hair care, make up, jewellery that I always imagined it would, lol. But boy it is FANTASTIC to not have to feel ugly every day. I know I always look presentable, I know if I make some effort I can look very impressive, I'm thinner and fitter and look younger than most of my peers, I can carry off a cool haircut and dont have to hide behind drab boring long hair, I can buy great clothes that are cheaper, I'm really really really enjoying it. And you know, that makes every other problem I have seem less significant and easier to deal with. I dont care as much about stuff as I did, becuase I feel so much more in control.
  20. Hello August All-Stars, It's been awhile since I've posted and I thought I'd check to see how everyone is doing. WOW I can't believe it's been almost 8 months now living with the band!! My weight loss has plateaued for the last two months and I wanted to see how everyone else is doing with their weight loss??? I've been doing lots of cardio/weight training and the scale is not moving, yet my clothes are fitting better, weird? I'm down 57 and am very happy, but wondering if this is an average place to be at this point? Anyone having a love/hate relationship with their scale? Have you hit a plateau and know how to help me kick it back into gear? Thanks!
  21. Hi everyone, I need some pre-surgical advice!! I would like to undergo the lapband procedure and have recently met with Dr. Moffat at The Credit Valley Clinic in Mississauga, Ontario(The Credit Valley Clinic - Weight Loss Surgery Program). I have decided to go ahead with the procedure and am really excited about it. However, he first needs me to meet with two others in the clinic before they decide if I get the green light for the procedure. I've read through many of these forums, particularly the Canadian one, and see no mention of Credit Valley, but many many mentions of The Surgical Weight Loss Centre (Drs. Cobourn & Mumford) and the TLBC clinic in Toronto. Has anyone been banded by The Credit Valley Clinic? Does anyone have any recommendations as to who the best choice of clinic and doctor would be? I just want to make the most informed choice. Thanks so much for your help and input!!
  22. Hi Monica: I was nervous about having another surgery. I have had 11 or 12. surgeries..so many that I have lost count. We joke in my family that I should get the next one free. :-) Anyway, this was a last resort. When I was younger...as a child, teenager, and twenty-something adult, I never had a weight problem. I jogged, lifted weights, and had a very active life. (I am 5'6" and started at 251) But something happened after the birth of my second child (26 yr). I could not lose the weight and I did not have time to jog or lift weights. My family life trumped my health. For the last 19 years I have struggled with weight gain and loss. I have been on diet after diet. So when I heard about gastric procedures I began to do the research. I still wonder what if this one fails too. But I have the support and the tools to make this work. I do not regret my decision. And I have no doubt you will not regret having the procedure. Good luck!
  23. Hi Monica, Many people here have been right where you are. I was banded on 12/13 in Monterrey, Mexico. I was very very apprehensive until I made the decision for surgery, then it was a great feeling, a relief. Sure I was nervous, but committed in my heart. I actually told NO ONE that I was going to Mexico for surgery, because I knew I would not get the support I needed. It was scary, going to Mexico for the first time, alone, and having surgery. I am a nurse (and BTW, my coordinator said that 35% of their clients are doctors and nurses and other health care professionals from the US!) , I constantly struggled with the thoughts of feeling I had to "resort" to banding because I was lazy or a loser. It's easy, right? Just eat less and exercise more, right? Well, it's more complicated than that, and any person of weight will tell you that. Obese people are experts on weight loss--after all, we have been on diets over half our lives! I knew I wouldn't be covered with my health insurance (my BMI wasn't quite high enough and I didn't have enough comorbid complications yet) , but to be honest, I went to Mexico because I trusted the doctor I went to. AND I do not regret my choice. The doctors in Mexico have performed more lapband surgeries than the doctors in Mexico, and some of the surgeons in Mexico have proctored US physicians! Just do your research on Mexican doctors--there are many excellent people on here to be a resource for you. Review the forums, as probably any question you have has no doubt been asked already. Once you research, make your decision, and commit, you will find your apprehension will turn into excited anticipation! Jenny

    Hallelujah!!!!!!

8/13/08 This is my first post on this website. I am excited to start my journey with weight loss and into a new world! My life will never ever be about BEING FAT AGAIN!!!! I received the best news that I was approved by BCBS-NJ yesterday. I couldn't have been more excited. I should have my surgery within the next 4-5 weeks. I am waiting for the day now. I can't believe this is finally a reality for me!! So here is my story...in 2002 tipping the scales at 308 I vowed never to get any bigger. I went to Great America and was embarrassed when I couldnt' fit on the one ride I wanted to ride. The raging bull. So I began an exercise program on my own and I worked out 6 times a week, 2 times a day 45 mins to an hour each time. I lost 50 lbs from 3/1-6/1/02 as the time went on I continued to lose and eventually got down to 243 from 308. I maintained for about a year trying to reach my goal of 170-175 but it never became a reality. So as the time went on my weight started to rise . And nothing worked any longer. So here I am today 8/13/08, 330 pounds  and I will NEVER EVER see that number again:rolleyes2:. I should have my surgery by mid September. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
