Wait six weeks or so till you're completely healed, then proceed slowly and listen to your body. Its unlikely you'd do any damage to the band as that's sewn to your stomach, but your port is attached to your abdominal muscle and it needs to be healed up before you do that sort of stuff. But now, I do plenty of strenuous activity, lots of running and situps, pushups and weights and I've never had any problem at all.

And mitty, often things can be worked out for financing if you can show need. Too old- Oh my my, I am 73 years old in 2 days and I still had mine. Surely you aren't as Me! And also don't try waiting as long as I did, you fight an uphill battle to receive IT THEN. And I was a veteran of every diet you have ever heard of and some you surely haven't. The weight you lose without surgery has a frustrating way of rebounding and bringing more with it. That's why it commonly is called yo-yo dieting and it, in the long run , bad for you.

Today at my company's golf tourney, I broke the news to my best friend about Ty and me getting Lap-Band. ( We had been drinking most of the morning and she just got done telling me that the reason why we were best friends was because we were completely honest... how could I not tell her at the point?) She seems shocked at first. Then told me she didn't think that I needed, that I looked fine. I told her that I weigh more than people think I weigh and she asked how much, when I told her that I weighed 275 she was even more shocked. I've always known that I hold my weight evenly all over my body and that I am naturally a thick girl, but I know that I'm not at a healthy weight. She was very interested on how we came to this conclusion, and if I felt that I was doing it just because Ty was, and I'm not. After she had all the facts she was ok with everything. She's supportive of the things that I need in life, so it's going to be good I feel. In the seminar last week, the women that came up to talk about their success stories told us that you learn who your true friends are after Lap-Band. I told my friend this, and I can pretty much peg who is going to have a problem with me loosing weight, and it won't be her. She told me that she isn't my friend because I'm overweight, and she won't be my friend just because I'm skinny, she's my friend because she just is. That is comforting to know. Well, I need to head to bed, I just wanted to get that out on print before the week starts. I hope everyone has a productive week this week. Until next time. Shells P.S. Attached is me at the golf tourney today goofing around.... giving clear evidence on my I need Lap-Band... it's terrible.

Has anyone heard of Malabsorption Gastric Bypass
RickM replied to Sharon B A's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
In your shoes, what I would really want to know is just how malabsorptive he made it, as that influences both how you supplement in the future, and how you need to eat to lose the weight, as both will likely be somewhat different than with the mainstream procedures like the RNY or DS. The old purely malabsorptive procedures like the JIB worked fairly well, but had a lot of nutritional complications which is why they were abandoned. The RNY went the other way being primarily restrictive and works well with only moderate nutritional consequences from its mild malabsorption, but weight maintenance is only so-so. The BPD/DS hits something of a sweet spot in being moderately malabsorptive with a similar level of nutritional quirks and a more moderate restriction. The old Scopinaro was more malabsorptive and had more problems than the typical DS (that usually had about a 50cm common channel, compared to 100+ for the BPD/DS). One of the general rules-of-thumb that we discussed in the DS world is that with the DS, the sleeve (restriction) gets the weight off, while the switch (the malabsorption) keeps it off. The implication of all of this (from an amateur/non doctor perspective) is that if there is enough malabsorption to effectively take the weight off by itself (a la the old JIB or Scopinaro) then there can be excessive nutritional problems, or if the malabsorption is moderate enough to not cause significant nutritional problems, the weight loss may be marginal. I would assume (hope) that this is the case with what your surgeon did, and that you will have to work harder at the loss part of the equation, but will have typical DS/distal RNY nutritional quirks to work around. This is something that you really need to understand in working with your surgeon in the coming follow up visits. Good luck! -

Got Surgery Date And Great Feedback! :d
lml32937 replied to amwr6582's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congrats! if there is 1 peice of advice I can offer (taking with a grain of salt of course) don't get yourself worked up or obsess on fixating on a specific weight you want to be at this time. From personal experience- Your surgeon knows what's best for you and your body type- You cannot go by the charts in doctor's offices.. Take 1 day at a time and take into consideration all of the inches, healthier choices you are making, smaller clothes, NSV's (non scale victories) etc. I did not set out with a certain poundage in mind- NEVER owned a scale until after my procedure and am very happy with my results. I have surpassed my surgeon's goal for 1st year out and am continuing to loose and feel so much better about it, my other goals and where I want to be in a year, 2, 3 etc... Good luck! you wont regret it!! -

hi everybody just one question, has anyone ever lost weight with the band with little execerise, i have arthritis in both knees, and ankles, just went back to work on the 20th. and im in alot of pain. doc took away my arthritis meds, (my lapband surgeon said i could have them if they were small enough) but my doc said no. so ive been taking tylenol and lortabs for the pain and sometimes that doesnt help. im miserable just walking around . thats the reason for the band to lose the weight so i can walk without so much pain. so has anyone lost with not much exercise. thanks tammy

I'm not the right one to answer the question, but if you add those to the weight does it make that much difference? Sounds like it might not add much, but I haven't picked up a scale yet and don't have any perspective on what those things might weigh.

It is so great that you are doing this together and you will have your own personal weight loss buddy. Best of luck!!

ok... so here's my 25 cents worth of advise... start living in the present and stop grieving the past.. as for food.. there are red flag foods.. but there are also so many new foods you can learn to eat.. like have you ever had a fine lobster bisque (which can be purchased at the grocery store.. my favorite brand is panera) or have you tried some new recipes.. like making grilled flake salmon over a bed of lettuce with diced mango and asparagus.. come on... you can look at all the food you CAN'T eat or you can look at all the food you CAN eat. take your pick... just before i began eating solids.. I wrote out a long long long list of all the food i could eat.. and how to combine those foods into nutritious, low cost high energy meals. I don't care if you are male or female.. you have to learn to cook and to shop.anyway.. thats my 25 cents worth.. I love this new way of eating.. i don't miss those kettle chips dipped in chocolat chip ice cream.. everything about the inside of me now is feeling healthier.. losing weight is making my joints move more smoothly, my allergy symptoms are gone and I have a new outlook about life. Please try to make life positive.... its called reframing a life event from a negative to a positive.. remember the reasons you got this procedure done , keep your goals out in front of you.. and eat hearty and well.. food takes on a new perspective... make every bite a new experience....and a healthy one.

Mattie- I felt that same way! It is just lack of food and anesthesia wearing off still. Good luck at your appointment tomorrow. Mine lasted a total of three minutes lol Susan- you have got to try it! It's heaven in your mouth! Jess- sorry to lol but that was my fear getting it out of the oven haha! Fortunately I wasn't my usual clutz self and didn't spill it. Yes that us the website! Have you seen her ice creams and shakes? Omg it's crazy! Don't get discouraged about the scale. I've read that when we reintroduce actual food to our bodies that we will stall and possibly gain. Just drink that water! I am going to start walking tomorrow but u have to do it immediately after work or it gets dark soon. I'm ready for spring!!

Yeah, I am very clutzy sometimes. I was trying to take it out with one hand (only ever got one pot holder, guess I need to get a second one). I agree with Amber, I think I still will be clutzy at 150 too...LOL. Though Mattie, it would be great if accidents decreased with my weight.

My feelings exactly when comparing the sleeve and the lapband. I'm a retired RN of 30 years so did a lot of homework. Recently, I was complaining to my surgeon that I thought I should have faster weight loss...he laughed and said this is a marathon and not a 50 yard dash and you're lucky you didn't choose a lapband. So many of those people are lucky to lose a lb. a week, have major problems, and many end up having a second piece of surgery to have done what you've done. Thank your lucky stars that you did your homework first. Enough said I guess.

Good luck to you as well! Great job publicly documenting your weight-loss journey. It will really help you keep on track & stay accountable. I did the same thing when I had surgery three years ago. We look forward to you sharing much more. Good luck! You are not alone! -
Gastric Sleeve Surgery After Lapband?
tropicalgal posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I had LapBand sugery in 2010 at the age of 51. I had prior health issues such as SIJ arthritis, & back surgery (2008). Before my LapBand surgery, I took myself off my presciption anti-inflammatory as directed. I lost around 30 lbs. in 4 months while going to the gym & walking on the treadmill at least 4 x per week. When my anti-inflammatory med finally left my system, my knees started KILLING me! I went to a Osteo surgeon who tried shots; found a torn miniscus and worn joints, but who didn't want to do sugery. Well, of course my weight loss journey not only stalled, I gained most of the weight back. I could barely go up & down my stairs at home, it was so bad. I got back on my presciption anti-inflammatory and am doing much better. I contacted my Bariatric surgeon and had a consult wih him yesterday. Heres the deal, I want the LapBand out so I can take stronger meds than acetametaphine for my pain. He and I are now talking LapSleeve. Has anyone else out there gone from a LapBand to a Sleeve? If so, are you happy you did? My doc did a flueroscopy and it looks like I have a hernia ; he said my band looks "flat". I'm praying my insurance will cover this re-do. I was self-pay for the band but no way I can pay for a removal & sleeve. Thanks to anyone who can respond to my question of LapBand to Sleeve. -
I just got banded a couple days ago and I feel a lot better today, I thought I was going to die the first two days, but I made it though all the pain, now I am ready to lose weight. I have already lost 8lbs. in two days, I'm so excited:thumbup:. ~Janea

Nope, I've never had any problems doing crunches, sit ups or any strenuous activity at all. I waited until a month after surgery before doing any major workouts, but I do crunches/situps all the time and have never felt it or gotten sore. Matter of fact, the only thing that has ever hurt my port is when my 21 pound cat decides to step on that spot and put all his weight on one foot directly on it.. and even then, it's not that painful, it just irritates me. I think a lot of this has to do with where your port is placed too.

Recently a friend asked me why I was even conteplating lap band surgery, she thinks I can do this only if I try hard enough, she has lost 20lbs with weight watchers and is at her goal. Here is my response and my reasons for why I want to do this. I hope it helps someone. February 27 at 3:45pm Hey, great job girlie. You haven't heard from me cuz I am still mustering up a response that adequately sums up why I am doing this, I suppose you have given me the opportunity to write down what has been brewing in my mind/soul for many months, no years. I hope that you understand that I have not, nor would I ever come to this decision half-heartedly. I have been going through the process of contemplating, then decididing surgery was the best direction for over two years now. I have discussed this with my primary physician and he gave me the name of a very caring doctor that does these types of procedures. I am not having bipass surgery as I truly believe this is a horrible procedure and subjects patients to a life long process of malnutrition. I am having a lap-band procedure that if used properly will help me make healthy, albeit smaller food choices. Could this fail as well? Yep, it could if I don't really make an effort to kick this fat off my ass for good. I am scared for my life. I am right now 110 lbs over weight. I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful sons that I want to be with for a long, long time. But if I continue in this way I will die a premature death, and make my family suffer in the process. Both of my parents (my Dad is 76 this year I think, and my Mom who is 63) have both have had strokes. My Dad has lost his mind, and his leg. Cannot remember to ask to go to the bathroom and pees and poops on himself. His once strong mind and body are gone, and have been replaced by a man who cries without cause, or warning. Both of my parents health are greatly effected by diabetes which they have had for years. My parents have always been overweight, sedentary people and are reaping the benifits of poor health now. My Mom has ulcerations on her ankles (that are thankfully finally healing) which at some point will probably open up, yet again, and will endanger her health and possibly head down the road of amputation, like my Dad. Dad has had several heart attacks and quadruple bipass surgery, and is at the end of the life span of those grafts. Which sadly may be a blessing. I have been overweight since probably middle school. I have been over 200lbs consistantly for the last 3 years, and I have lost weight over and over and over again only to have that same weight creep back up. The problem is that I don't know when to stop, and usually wont untill every last morsel of food is consumed. I am seeing a therapist to help me with any emotional ties to food, and to help me through the process. I need to once and for all rise to the occasion to fight my personal demon and win. I believe that before I go to war I want all the support and tools that I can take to the battle. The band is only one of these tools. I still plan to use weight watchers as a support and a guide to a healthy lifestyle. I need to exercise 45 min to one hour at least every day, I need to eat in a healthy way, and I believe that when I am tempted the band will help me stay on the straight and narrow so to speak. The band is only a tool, nothing more. It will not loose the weight for me. I still have to do all the work, blood sweat and tears will come, but I believe that if I work with the tool I will succeed, permanently. I need to do this for my health, my life, and my family. This is so much more than being sad over being unable to wear what I want, or look how I want. I simply want to be able to carry my 2 yr old up the stairs without gasping for breath. I want to go to sleep at night without my heart racing, or thinking if I will die in 15 to 20 years of a heart attack. I want to know that when I am 70, I am able to hike through the Arizona dessert with my friend, and not be sitting in a urn somewhere. I want my life back. And I deserve nothing less. I am in here somewhere, and I cannot wait for my body to catch up with the person I know I am. I hope this helps you understand this process. I know I will still need you for support. Thanks so much for all the love you give. Ruthie...

So I started my weight loss journey years ago but never thought about wls. I decided last year that wls was probably my best bet. So on my oldest son bday, April, I started my supervised 6 month diet. I went through all the testing, pych eval, nut appt and meet with my suregon twice. I have jumped through hoops to get here and now its only a week away. Im scheduled for preop appt on 2/12 and surgery on 2/13. My preop diet has been hard cause I still have a husband and three lil children to cook three square meals a day for but I haven't cheated and I'm hanging in there. Im getting super nervous as they days pass.
