  11. I work as a nurse and my typical patient is usually elderly, a new post op patient, a recent moderate to severe stroke victim, a bariatric patient who had a bad outcome, an accident victim, and/or a person who has been debilitated for a long period of time. The typical patient is a one person hard tranfer or a two person mild transfer. They weight anywhere from 100lbs to 500lbs, with the average being around 200lbs. They need to be tranferred into and out of the bed/wheelchair/bathroom and lifted and repositioned often while in bed, I work three-12 hour night shifts in a row so lots of this. I am hoping to have my sleeve done during a two week planned vacation, and return back to work about 10 days post op. I will be able to avoid a lot of the lifting by saying that I have had stomach surgery, but there is always times when it is hard to do. For anyone out there that is in a job like mine with this type of lifting, what is the amount of time you took off. I want to let my body heal properly, but at the same time I hate to make my co-workers work a lot of extra days to cover my days if I am off, so I would like to be back as soon as possible. Worse case I can tell my boss that I had the surgery and will only work if there are always two other people there with me, sometime there is only me and another worker. I hate to take this road because there are to many things that can go wrong and it is a major hassle to always make sure everyone hasn't forgotten that I need these needs met. Plus I hate feeling like I am whining or not pulling my weigh, I went through a year and a half of many complications with my lap band so everyone knows I have had these type needs in the past, so I really hate to go down that road once again. Any advice would be welcomed.

    My Job Requires Lifting

The bad outcomes from bariatric surgery were mostly from one doctor in the area, who has now moved to another state, and a few from the local doctors who are through the hospital I work at. A few were lap bands that had problems that turned into other problems, but most were from gastric bypass or DS surgeries. The bypass/DS patients were ones that were usually over 400pounds, got put on a vent after surgery and then took a while to come off. Once they did get discharged from ICU they have to come to rehab because now they are weak from post op diet intake, being bedridden, and as a result stay where I am at for weeks. They usually go home with family and home health care, some even go to a nursing home. Being fat and the road to being skinny is a scary thing, but I can't not walk it because I see what happens when you don't. I had an obese 35 year old co-worker who had one large and two smaller strokes last week that were a direct result of bad lifestyle and being obese.

    Help after surgery?

I don't have children but I do have three cats and a big dog. I was on my own after surgery without any problems. I didn't need any help at home other than someone to change the kitty litter, due to the lifting restriction. My dog was very happy since she got to go for at least three walks each day, even though they were short. If your dogs are big and tend to jump up I would start training them out of that habit now, as taking a big paw to the stomach could be painful! You don't want to be lifting heavy bags of dog food so make sure those are positioned where you won't need to move them -- or make sure that your children are up to the task of taking care of the dog food for a couple of days. I did not need any help getting in or out of bed. If I had a recliner, I probably would have slept in it but I didn't need one. I was pretty tired but managed to take care of everything just fine. Depending on how old and how self-reliant your children are, they may need a little coaching to take care of some of their own needs for a few days I guess.
  14. The insurance person in my surgeon's office could be better. First, I had to decipher rule changes shown on the CIGNA website for her, and she agreed with me eventually but did so with a tude. A few weeks later, I received a mailing from her announcing the rule change I'd just explained to her. Still, no big deal - I'm sure they were just informing all CIGNA patients of the change. My problem has to do with her interpretation of a different rule, which states that I need to see the NUT for "3 consecutive months (i.e.>= 89 days)". My issue is related to the fact that I went to the NUT on 6/27 and then on 8/2. The insurance person told me that due to no appointment in July, it's in violation of the "consecutive months" rule. I told her the appointments were 36 days apart, but she didn't give in. I called CIGNA and had the customer service person speak directly to the people that approve/deny. They said this wasn't an issue as they don't specify the exact number of visits during that period, but only that there is continuous activity with a NUT during that period, which I thought was reasonable. They agreed that the rule wasn't meant to imply calendar months but instead a block of time. I called the Surgeon's insurance person back and she said that in her experience they would deny this due to no activity in July. I told her what CIGNA said, but she said it doesn't matter and that the Medical Director that reviews this case will make that call. She said she'd send it in (after all other requirements and 2 more NUT visits completed), but didn't think it would be accepted. She said if we send it in and they don't like it, they could send it to the appeals process which could add an additional month. They may also just ask for one more nut visit and allow resubmitting in a week. What do you think? Should I do the 5th Nut visit to be extra sure or try my luck and send it in with 4?
  15. I am 6 months out and haven't lost in a month and feel my self possibly heading in the wrong direction. Currently down 70lbs at 255. Any help?
  16. I was sleeved seven days ago today, and my doctor told me that the top part of my spleen lost it's blood supply when they removed my stomach. It's called a spleen infarction. He indicated that I would have pain in my upper body for approx 3 weeks and that I should get a CT done in a few months. I didn't have any pain up until last night and it has been hurting all day today. Has anyone else had this issue?
  17. You will pass me up within the next week. I'm sure of it!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. I am in the puree stage (weeks 3 and 4) after my sleeve surgery. I have found the forums, I just want to find a list of recipes. Can anyone direct me to this info? Thanks, Joel

    Heartburn...?

I have awful heartburn as well. I have had it before and after the surgery. In the last 2 weeks I've started taking Prilosec once a day (just 1 pill) and also one of these Probiotics (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005P0NYFI/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and there is a world of difference. These probiotics are inexpensive and they WORK. I've been heartburn free for 2 weeks now.
  20. I'm almost eight weeks out and haven't had a period... Has anyone else experienced this?

    Pre ops Labs and Diet

Eggs are great, lots of protein. For me.... I was on liquids for like 2-3 weeks, then soft mushy food for 3 wks then on to mushy, wet, soft solids. You can ask your surgeon for the meal plan now.....I am sure they will give it to you. Good luck
  22. My first appointment with my Lap Band Surgeon was 1 month ago. Yesterday I knocked out all of my appointments and tests in one day. First was my appointment with the nutritionist. My insurance requires 6 months of diet prior to the surgery. I have receipts from Weight Watcher from the past year as well as Nutrisystem. So, I only had to see the nutritionist once. Of course the insurance requires it, but they do not cover it as a benefit. I had to pay for that 100% out of my pocket. Then I had my appointment with the Psychologist which was very easy. After that I had my blood work done an upper GI and an EKG. I had to pay my portion of all these tests as well. My surgeons office will be submitting to the insurance company this week. I hoping that the insurance company will approve the surgery the first request fingers crossed. Anyone else at this step in the Lap Band Journey? I would love to hear how the process is going.
