7 Months and Feeling Like a Success
ButterflyBandita?? posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi Everyone, I wanted to provide an update on my progress. I've been 100% happy with my sleeve. I converted from the band back in October 2010. I was banded in Jan 2010 at 200 lbs and only lost 15 lbs from that time untill October when I revised. I hated the band! Weightloss with the sleeve has been effortless. Yes, I struggled with dumping and other weird side effects. I even had to have my gallbadder removed 6 weeks ago and now have diarhea, but you know what? I'd do it all again in a heart beat. I went to Mexico and saw Dr. Rodriguez through BeLightWeight (or however they spell it). The first few months I really focused on Protein first, etc, etc. but the past few months, I really just eat (AND DRINK) whatever I want. My weight loss has slowed down the last 2 months, but I still lose. I also haven't exercised much at all either. Just eating small portions. VERY small portions. I'm now down to 128 and am fine with that. I'll maybe lose 10 more, as I'm only 5'3", but I'm in the normal range now, wearing sizes 1 - 4 and feeling generally pretty great. I did lose some hair and it seems to hav stopped now, but again. Totally worth it. I"m inlcuding some pictures of a yearly bus trip that I take with friends each year at the end of April. The first one is from last year, and the second one is a side view of me at this year's trip. I still couldn't beleive that was me when I saw the picture. I'd be happy to answer any questions. YOU CAN DO THIS! -

Caralee I commend you for working to help people who need the surgery for health reasons. Good for you. But I take a little bit of an issue with your wholehearted praise of the sleeve surgery. I have had a band to sleeve revision but I did so knowing that 6 or 7 years from now we may learn that there are some pitfalls to having 2/3 of our stomach removed. Remember, 5 years ago the band was the hottest thing since sliced bread. As time passed and we've gathered more data, we've learned that there are some side effects and problems with the band that make it less than ideal for many people. We don't even know if in the very long term, having that device could cause cancer or other health conditions that would prove that it is not as safe as we all think it is. So although the sleeve seems like the answer to a prayer, only time will tell. I'm betting that I'm always going to be better off having had the VSG but I know that it may not turn out that way. A prime example of what I'm talking about are all the hundreds of drugs that are created to relieve symptoms and in so many years of use, we learn that they are more lethal and dangerous than the condition they were created to treat. I just think we all need to get our surgery and live our lives with our eyes wide open and that we should stay as well informed as our research and experience tells us. Ok, signing off. Debbie Downer. I really need to get back on my full strength Wellbutrin, right? LOL -
I had my surgery on 6/18/09 too!! I am currently on hold right now though. I went in for my first fill on 7/15/09 and found out that my port was flipped. So now I am waiting for the insurance company to approve a "port revision" surgery. My doctor told me that when they do the new surgery they can also fill the port at the same time. I was really looking forward to getting my first fill, because I am feeling very little restriction. Good Luck to everyone!!

Will insurance approve if I had lap band in 2010 removed
rosstheboss replied to Nanaoffour's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's difficult. I was banded in 09. I've kept off 50 lbs. but it's been a struggle. I have had fill put in and out so many times I can't remember. Ins will want to see compliance and if you gained that say you were not compliant. Many dr mine included are doing the sleeve for $10,000 all inclusive, hospital etc. with 3 yr follow . My ins is covering a revision but I have Years of compliance history even then it was denied at first. So ask your dr about private pay especially for revisions. -
Sleeve 2011 and just had the Roux en y bypass questions
Frostyauggie replied to wendy100's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
How was you’re recovery process going from the sleeve to bypass? In a few weeks I will be doing a revision of my sleeve to bypass due to a hiatal hernia and acid reflux. I’m curious to know if the recovery after the surgery is worse, the same or easier the second time around. I’m also interested in knowing how your insurance covered the revision. My policy has an exclusion and I’m concerned I will be denied coverage. -
On 2/15/22 I underwent revision from VSG to RNY due to hiatal hernia and reflux issues. My surgery weight was around 230 lbs, actually a few less due to three days of liquid diet. In the 5 months since revision surgery I've lost about 40 lbs, but have been at a steady weight for over five weeks. I'm currently around 15 to 20 lbs away from my final goal. I had a post surgery follow up with the surgeons office and they just suggested I try to stay closer to the dietary guidelines. I probably was a little short on protein but in the couple weeks since have worked diligently to increase protein and reduce carbs. Yet the scale hasn't moved. Looking for experiences from others who had revision without a large amount of weight to lose. How did it go for you? Is this just a stall or my new normal? Should I expect to continue to lose, or am I pretty much at my new set point after five months?
-
Absolutely see your frustration. I had lost 194lbs before my revision revision (my original being ruined by a bad pregnancy, hemorrhaged ovaries that had to be removed. A diagnosis of Hypothyroidism and then PCOS) and when I was a smaller more ‘normal human sized’, my concerned were actually taken into account when I spoke to my health professional versus when I weight 365 before hand and have gained 100lb back and an chubby now, the doctor basically blames EVERYTHING you complain about on the fact that you’re fat or you’re not working out enough and assumed you’re eating cookies and candy all day to get so big so then comes the nutritionist recommendations instead of a cardiologist appoint or what have you. This is all learned and considered acceptable behavior largely do to social conditioning and it’s sad. Proud of you for doing so happy in your year though. You’re doing amazing!

Revision from lapband to sleeve
JacquieK replied to JacquieK's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello to revision from lapband to sleevers. I’m 22 days out and just wondering how everyone is doing. I’m having a lot of heartburn no matter what I eat. I’m still very fatigued if I do something for more the two hours straight, like housework. I actually feel faintish. Sometimes I’m hungry sometimes not. When I eat I have to be very careful because I don’t feel full until it’s to late then I’m sick, I’m trying to measure out food but I’m so hungry at that moment that I feel that one more tablespoon is not going to make a difference..wrongo! Otherwise I’m feeling great, no pain or soreness anymore I never took pain meds so that wasn’t and issue. Sleeping is getting better can lay on my side now without discomfort!! Just like to know how everyone else is doing and stage they are in? -
Revision from lapband to sleeve

Hi everyone! I just got approved to get the band out and the sleeve ASAP. I really haven’t spent a lot of time researching what to expect and it just dawned on me to come here! My band was a disaster and never was viable. The port came out after 2 revisions and I had MRSA. 12 yrs later it’s coming out. So excited for that. Did everyone have the revision to sleeve in multiple surgeries? Reading about the intolerance to artificial sweeteners has been interesting ...I’ve been trained since WW in the mid 80’s to have fake sugar. Any major advice for someone who is about to start this journey again? allison -
Revision from lapband to sleeve

Hi. I had my gastric band removed after 10 years with revision to sleeve just 3 weeks ago. How can I help? -
Yes I read about someone who had her stomach imaged and it was an improper VSG. Her doctor offered to redo the surgery for her after she sent her a picture of the image. She decided after her husband used Dr. Aceves to use him for the revision instead of the initial surgeon. So I would guess getting the stomach imaged to see if the shape is proper or if it indeed was made incorrectly would be the first step and also it would give another doctor an idea of the ability to have it revised or not.

Proudest 2018 moment: worked really hard to lose weight over 2018. In Feb I had a bariatric appointment to discuss possible revision surgery and was 143 kilos / 315 lbs. Worked really hard even with dodgy lapband that either had no effect when too lose or terrible reflux whenever it was tightened and by October got down to 127.5 / 281 lbs for revision surgery. Every pound was hard won I tell ya. So proudest moment was when I got on plane to go to Belgium for my surgery and the seat belt fit without an extender. I was so delighted and happy! First time in decades I hadn't needed to ask for an extender. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi everyone, I'm getting my lap band taken out, due to a partial slip for the 3rd time, and getting a revision to the sleeve. Scheduled for net Thursday, and am getting nervous! My original lap band was done by another surgeon, from another insurance. This time I'm going through Kaiser in CO for the revision. This seems so different from the band preparation. I guess I'll be on full liquids for 2 - 4 weeks after surgery. I'm definitely nervous. Anyone else? -
Revision Surgery Wait Time Between Band To Sleeve
Nickimac replied to Midijola's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just found out today my Dr won't do the revision in one surgery. I was so angry. I was never told this. I'm so frustrated. So much time wasted. I have been deflated since October 18th. Why didn't they tell me this I'm getting married in April and wanted to lose a nice amount of weight. Trying not to let it ruin my holiday. -

I'm in Australia. Dr Dolan took my band out 3weeks ago. I am booked in for the sleeve in 5weeks. He is extremely experienced in revisions. I am so happy without my band, but have piled on 5kgs in 3weeks. So unhappy about that!!!!! -
Revision Surgery Wait Time Between Band To Sleeve
Midijola replied to Midijola's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes I agree, I think it is too, but I will wait it out. I kinda have to now as I flew down to have the band removed anticipating a 3month wait to have the sleeve done in January, taking a week off work. However, after he removed it he thinks I need to wait at least 6 months. So now when we are down for Christmas I will see either my surgeon or another one to book in for April. I have to work around school holidays as I am a teacher. I am just trying to research a surgeon that perhaps have done the most revision surgeries. My surgeon I know has done a lot and only puts sleeves in now and only takes bands out, he said he only put one band in, in the last 12 months. I said I wished I had a sleeve done instead of a band and he said it was still very new then (2007), that the band was the main option. Also I was still in Perth at that time. I have had to go up to Darwin for a fill adjustment cos its closer, but being remote is inconvenient for a band. -
Different types of bands used.....

A few years ago, my friend's daughter participated in a study where she got the Swedish band at no cost to her. She went for all her fills etc, and originally she lost 40 lbs. Now she has gained that back plus some. She is now considering RNY revision surgery. Of course, I'm not sure why it failed her or did she fail it? It seems like the latter may be so. She had to get unfilled because she had a swollen esophogus and according to her mother, she was trying to fit what didn't fit and temporarily damaged her esophogus. I guess that can happen with the LapBand too. Well, just thought I'd share that! Regards, Alfie -

Scheduled for a band to sleeve revision with Dr. Garcia (Ready 4A Change) and getting excited/anxious/nervous. Was scheduled for 4/25 but had to switch to May 3rd for my husband's work schedule. It's wonderful to hear SO many people who had a great experience. I can't say much for the experience quite yet, but to say that Alma is a rockstar!!! She is like lightening returning emails and always has all the answers!! Love her!!! Did anyone on this thread have a revision from band to sleeve with Dr. Garcia? I'd love to hear more about your experience if so!!! Either through post or PM, I'd just like to hear from someone who's had a revision with him since there's a little more involved Thanks!!! -
Im going in for my revision next month for these exact reasons !!!! Im glad you are ok now. Still praying for our OP Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App

Sleeve 5 years ago; now revision to bypass??
ellie123 replied to KristinaW's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You and I talked at length so hopefully my advice helped. Sleeve to RNY revision. That first doc did my revision and had been doing bypasses for 20 years, so is well respected in the industry. Now bedside manner is another thing... I’m 5 weeks out, and aside from sorting insurance out, no regrets :)) -

Sleeve 5 years ago; now revision to bypass??

I 2nd @GreenTealael 's sentiment. It's either really bad scheduling or he's got so many "flukes" there is no way around scheduling them all together. I would definitely consult a 2nd surgeon, maybe even a 3rd. Sorry I can't give you any input on the revision but the bigger concern is this surgeons response to your question about the complainers. Best of luck to you!! Sorry @GreenTealael I wound up getting my curser stuck in the box of your name and can't type anything after it when that happens. So you get 3 shouts.@GreenTealael -
I am having a revision from sleeve to bypass June 14th. I started my pre-op diet Sunday and it's not too bad. I'm starting to get nervous though. Not looking forward to having to do this all over AGAIN.. I had my sleeve done in Oct 2017, and it hasn't been a fun ride since. I hope this time it turns out better. I am ready to get it over with 🤨😬.. . Wish everyone luck and a speedy recovery..

I wish I knew.....

I am an analytical type. I reasearched things alot before revising to sleeve from a failed band. I am glad I understood that I might not have as good of results, based on the statistics. That gave me a chance, both preop and in the early months post revision to ask alot of "why" questions. Surgeon, nutritionalist, other revisionistas - anybody I could glean this from. I learned that many people with the band have learned to "eat alot of sliders", graze and most importantly, ignore that "full feeling". It is crazy, that sometimes your body really adapts. So, since I was armed with knowledge, I was able to be very diligent about those underlying things and i believe it made a difference.
