    Vitamins

Not true...malabsorption doesn't just occur in bypass. I only say this out of personal experience. At a little over a year out, I started having really odd symptoms that mimicked a stroke. It took many months of testing before my bariatric internist did "micronutrient"testing on my blood. I was deficient in many key vitamins-D, B12, Iron, Magnesium to name a few. I started intensive Vitamin therapy in February and didn't start to fell better until April. According to her, because we have less surface in our gut to absorb the nutrition from food, it's not unheard of to have issues. I know this isn't a response to the gummy vitamin question, but I think it's important that ALL bandsters understand the importance of getting sufficient vitamins in whatever form they can...

    Why so slow???

And I will tell you from experience that snacks is not the problem. Snacks are almost necessary in the early stages to meet your nutritional goals. Unless you have a Bariatric NUT, which I'd be surprised if you do, they don't have a firm grasp on our stomach capacity and how our anatomy is limiting. I've had to educate my NUT on certain things. I'm not saying they all do, but they forget that the things that work for regular people who are dieting, or eating healthy, don't always work for us. There is nothing wrong with snacks to meet your goals. I don't want to toot my own horn but I lost 100lbs 5 months post op, 128lbs overall. And I eat 3 snacks per day. My typical meal plan looks like this: 8:00a- breakfast 11:00a- snack 1:30p- lunch 4:00p- snack 7:00p-dinner 9:00p- snack (almost always is FairLife milk) Obviously times vary, but very typical for me to have 3 snacks per day.
  4. If anyone asks how I lost all that weight, I tell them, "Clean living, diet, exercise.... and bariatric surgery." Usually gets a laugh โ€“ and most people are fascinated by it.

    A Knights Tale

One of my all time favorite movies is โ€œA Knightโ€™s Tale.โ€ In one of the key scenes, William, our intrepid hero; played by the late Heath Ledger, is told by his father โ€œa man can change his stars, and make a new and better life.โ€ It is that spirit that surrounds this Lapband community. So for those of you who have people who doubt, alienate or deride you for โ€œtaking the easy way outโ€โ€ฆstand true. You have chosen to โ€œchange your starsโ€ and it can be a lonely road. However, truth be told, it was always destined to be a bit lonely because only you can make those changes. So take heartโ€ฆthere is a place where others understand, and you can find new strength and renew your purpose. I struggled with this choice for many years, my wife and mother both encouraged me to look at Lapbanding. I have found tremendous help and hope in the many pages of this forum. For those of you struggling with this choice remember โ€œit is better to do the hard right thing vs. the easy wrong thing.โ€ For many, lifeโ€™s journey has brought us here and offered us new way to โ€œchange our stars.โ€ Often we have to do things that others will never comprehend, if you know this is the right thing to do for you and those you loveโ€ฆpersevere. Then, take the road less traveled, be true to what you know is right, love and forgive the detractors for they are sorely misguided and follow your true knightโ€™s heart forward in the face of all adversaries.
  6. I'm not the young studs like you guys are i'm 61 in September but I never in a million years thought that the excess skin would look like this. I think I look terrible without cloths on. But there is no way in the world I will invest the kind of money you have to do to get rid of it. My good friend across the street from me works for a surgeon who specializes in bariatric skin removal procedures. Maybe I can get her to throw me a bone huh?
  7. 2 days post op and i started Bariatric Advantage mixed berry vitamin and I thought it was a little better this morning but same reaction a min later. Mouth watering and trying hard not to throw up. Did anyone else have this issue with Bariatric Advantage and does it go away? What brands do you like? Need an alternative stat.
  8. Good afternoon love! Just wanted to reply to your comment and share a bit of my journey with u. I had a revision in December from a VBG(first weight loss surgery approved) in 2004 to a gastric bypass do to esophogus issues, heartburn and major weight gain. I lost 46lbs after revision. The vitamins I see you posted are great but expensive. I have blood check up every 3 months have been amazing and i take a Bariatric vitamin from amazon. 16.77 month. My health is fabulous. Look into amzon for vitamins love. It will really save you money and they work just as well. Please take your daily calcuim after revision and you will be just fine. Good luck and God Bless you

Am I Paranoid? Mildly Freaked Out Or What?

If you your insurance company has a bariatric coordinator then the best thing you can do is ask. In the long run studies have shown that insurance companies save money by covering weight loss surgery. The health problems associated with obesity are expensive. But honestly you are having surgery next week! In my experience once your approved and have a date then your submission process is over. It sounds like you have good coverage. Most likely what people who work with benefits call a "cadillac plan". How generous your insurance plan is allowed to be determines how you are treated.
  10. Ok my due date had been revised. Which is no surprise because ALL my children measured small in the beginning. So I'm due March 10th instead of February 28th. But it will be an automatic c section because both previous babies were, that means I shave one week off of the due date. My weight gain has been 0 in 7 weeks since conception. My restriction is that of it right after surgery. I don't want to eat but force feed myself. Popsicles have been my best friends. I'm sick from morning to night (which gives me comfort knowing I have symptoms lol), breasts are slowly getting sensitive, I have food aberrations to everything but then have cravings also but I don't know what I am craving. sleep comes and goes. I take my Vitamins and Calcium. I'm on Zofran for morning sickness. I'm hoping to avoid gestational diabetes. Doctor thinks its a good possibility I can avoid it He did list me as high risk pregnancy due to my Bariatric surgery, but I'm praying to the good Lord that's just a label and I have a healthy pregnancy. So my goal is to update weight gain/losses and any issues I might come upon that way all these questions most of us have can start being answered. I how that I can help others with this. Importantly we as sleevers need to remember that we will always have this tool its about choices, control, and loving ourselves enough to do the right things Sent from my EVO using VST

    Unsatisfied with food!

I woukd consider it a blessing and use it to your advantage as long as it lasts. I am year out and I find myself wanting to eat because something tastes good. That is what led me to bariatric surgery. I would love to have the days back when I only ate to sustain my body and eating for pleasure was not an issue. That being said.....can you give us a sample menu? Maybe we can help you tweak it. Are you drinking any Protein drinks to supplement your intake? I still start my day with a premier Protein Drink...gives me 11 ounces towards my liquid intake amd 30 grams of protein towards my protein intake.

Anyone know about Capital Blue Cross?

If you don't get a response here, there is a Yahoo! group about bands and insurance. Check them out. But the best way to know is to pick up the phone and call the company and ask. You'll get the appropriate answer. Sometimes different policies with the same company can have different riders. Might depend on if your workplace bought the Bariatric rider or not. That's why it is important to call them and find out what your specific policy includes.

    Pregnancy after sleeve

Typically sleevers and those with RNY are told to use an alternative method of birth control. pills are not effective for birth control for us due to changes to the stomach. Hope all is well with you. If you are not pregnant and do not want to be, would recommend you contact your bariatric clinic and ask for their advice on a better method of contraception for you. Best of luck.

    Vitamins

I am posting here to bump the thread up and hopefully get more responses. I'm having a terrible time with this as well. I did so much research pre op, and was happy with what I bought (or so I thought). I ended up with Bariatric Advantage Sublingual Vitamin B12, Celebrate Calcium PLUS 500, and Celebrate Vitamins Multivitamin Chewable. The B12 isn't bad. It's cherry flavored, and doesn't make me nauseous. The multivitamin is ok flavor-wise, but it does make me nauseous. And the calcium is just awful. They are huge, and I'm supposed to take 3 a day. I'm lucky if I can get one down. They make me so sick to my stomach. And that's even when I make a point to take them on a full stomach. I would love to hear what other people are taking!
  15. Hello, I had lap band surgery in 2005. I have lost 30 lbs. I need to lose 90 more. I had a lot of problems with reflux and had to be unfilled. I also was with a practice that kind of let me down because they have never called me or followed up with me since my unfill 9 years ago. I'm establishing now with a new group in Central Maine. I am seeing the dietitian and getting a fill on Thursday. I am very hopeful that with proper follow up and better compliance on my part, I'll be successful this time around. Can anyone tell me how to like a post on here? Thanx
  16. I'm pre-op, but I know I will feel uncomfortable in these situations after surgery. I started seeing a counselor a couple of months ago. I figured that it couldn't hurt to get a jump start on my emotional eating issues. She has been amazing! We just talked about being "invisible" as an overweight person and what it will mean to be "visible" again after losing the weight. I never thought about it like that before, but being overweight is one of my buffers or protections from everyone else. It's kinda scary to think of losing that. I definitely recommend counseling for bariatric patients because the surgery helps with the physical part of overeating, but doesn't address the mental side of things (why we eat). There are also some great books out there too.

    post op from April 29th

Jcollins You will be fine. Remember to read and refer often to your bariatric manual and follow your physicians specific instructions. We have to study now while we can eat very little so we will have it all down pat when we can eat. We need to eat slowly over 30 min. Then we will feel the compression of the sleeve. Sip sip sip all day to get your fluids and protein in. They will help you feel good by keeping you hydrated, helping you heal, and prevent you from having a large though temporary hair loss.

    Late decision change.

I will stay with both, but he will be the go to since quite frankly PCPs do not understand the needs of post bariatric patients as well as the surgeon does.

    Marylanders!

My surgery is at MedStar Washington. My PCP recommended their Bariatric program which has taught me a LOT through their group workshops.

    Constipation

Well, there are 2 kinds of laxatives: osmotic and stimulants. Epsom salt is essentially magnesium sulfate, an osmotic laxative that replaces magnesium in the body and essentially causes your GI system to pull more fluids into the poop so you can pass it easier. Think stool softeners: colace and Miralax. I assume she cringed or made a face because use of Epsom salt isn't something we hear too much of in this day/age of products like Miralax. Also, using Epsom salt as a laxative can cause magnesium imbalance (needed for muscle contractions), increases your need for water, and can lead to dehydration if you're not careful. Just from reading all the frequent posts on BP about constipation and how to fight it, everyone has their own method that works for them. Until then, I think we all have a certain amount of anxiety with BMs. Me, I make sure I take a fiber supplement every day and I drink lots of water. If I miss more than a day, I will take a low dose dulcolax just to keep things moving. I do not wait. Waiting only increases discomfort and makes things more difficult to resolve. *In my first month or 2 after being sleeved, I used milk of magnesia for the same purpose as the dulcolax. I DID NOT want to have to strain with those first few! both Dulcolax and MOM are stimulant laxatives=stimulates the muscle of the intestines to push things along. I've heard lots of bariatric patients promote Smooth Move Tea. I haven't tried it, but I've had other teas like it. They are also stimulant laxatives and rather powerful ones if you steep the tea long enough. Hope this was helpful!

Looking for other Anthem Blue Cross PPO experiences.

My company was bought and our insurance will change to Anthem Blue Cross in January. The plan is called Prudent Buyer. My new employer is California based however I live in Texas. We havenโ€™t enrolled in our selected plans yet however my HR person gave me the EOC for this year explaining all the coverage and stated nothing will change. Bariatric is covered and the only stipulation is that it must be deemed medically necessary and performed at a BDCSC facility. There are absolutely no other requirements listed like wait times, nutrition visits, etc. Anyone else have experience with this plan?
  22. I see you chose Dr. Josh Roller!! Awesome choice! I decided on Dr. John Baker in Little Rock..! I live in Southeast Arkansas so it was a given that I went with him.. I was very comfortable with his advice. He's actually a teacher/trainer in laparoscopy right here in arkansas... many bariatric surgeons from different regions come to train with him. Aside from researching him in general, I have to say that was the MAIN reason I chose him...

    Question

That was basically the sensation I recall experiencing when I was first diagnosed with acid reflux...though that was a number of years prior to having my band placed. I'm not certain what a bariatric surgeon would advise. My doctors have advised me to continue to take Prevacid daily as I've done for years.
  24. Inner Surfer Girl

    hi everyone,

Welcome to both of you. I HIGHLY recommend you read this site. There is a ton of information here. Once you have read a good bit, feel free to post specific questions. It usually helps to start a thread with a title for your specific question so it is easy to find. You will get more answers that way. I also recommend you write everything down (if you memory is anything like mine, it helps to record everything). Keep a running list of questions for your surgeon and bariatric team. They will also probably give you a notebook or binder. If not, you will want to get one to keep all of the paperwork handy. Be prepared to practice polite persistence, patience, perseverance, and positivity. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

    3 Months out, vitamin check

My advice...or at least what I was advised - As far as Vitamins, I was told to stick with the chewables for life, since the solid pills may pass through your sleeve before being fully absorbed. I was using the Centrum chewables based on the recommendation of my surgeon...he said this one was the most complete. As far as calcium, I was told to stay away from any calcium carbonate, and find only the calcium citrate. The Bariatric Advantage chewables worked really well for me until I started using the Nascobal Nasal spray for my B12. This is a mail order Rx, and it comes with a multivitamin, Iron, and calcium - all chewable - and it's nice and convenient.
