Thoughts and concerns about the preop diet
mi75 replied to Noor1969's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hang in there everyone! i know this is an older thread but reading it helped a LOT as i start my 2 wk pre-op tomorrow. 4 Protein shakes daily, and then 6 very specific servings of any combo of the following: SG yogurt, jello, pudding, cottage cheese. Unlimited raw veggies, broth, SG popcicles and water. i know i have it much easier than most, being allowed to have some 'real food'. so i'm not complaining, just scared. going from probably 2800 cals a day to that. wow. i am already planning out my work breaks so that i am not around others when they are eating. it's got to be my strategy since my department has quite luxurious lunches almost every day this week! -

Pinkgirl1234 replied to citygirl1962's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor is not an advocate of all liquid...I can have cottage cheese, yogurt and one serving of softened proteins and steamed spinach.2 to 3 shakes and I feel fine...isopure liquid protein is my new friend. -
I found a yogurt...yoplait greek 100 protein. It has 100 cals. 10 carbs, sugar 7, and protein 15. What is the amt of carbs I should stay under?

PINKBERRY AND FRO-YO
ladylaura replied to lifelovekix's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yoplat makes a really good frozen greek yogurt popsicle....the vanilla and honey tastes like ice cream. I lived off of that for a couple weeks LOL -
I go for grilled chicken and toss the bun. I'll even do jr cheeseburgers and just toss the bun. I eat Chick-fil-a grilled nuggets and Wendy's chili. Nothing from Taco Bell. I do have my mister get extra mild sauce. I put it on beans and meat at home and it makes authentic Taco Bell tasting food I can actually eat. The fruit and yogurt parfait at McDonald's. I've eaten a few fried chicken strips. Popeyes has naked chicken too.

I really hate Greek yogurt, can I use a couple teaspoons of white sugar to help it taste better???

How Have Your Tastes Changed Since Surgery?
Alex Brecher posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
A lot of WLS patients find their tastes change after WLS. Sometimes it’s too bad, like not liking healthy foods like chicken or salad anymore. Sometimes it’s a good thing, like when you don’t like greasy foods anymore. Sometimes it’s a direct result of surgery, like being intolerant to super sweet foods after gastric bypass or not liking the taste of Water anymore after the sleeve. Sometimes it’s the result of getting used to a new set of foods that you first FORCE yourself to eat, and later actually enjoy more than the junk food you used to eat. Like many lap-band patients, I didn’t notice any immediate changes in my tastes post-op, but my tastes have definitely changed in the years since surgery! Now, I like healthy foods, and don’t automatically prefer high-calorie sugary or fried foods. I like yogurt, and oatmeal, and fruit, and vegetables, and prefer unprocessed foods. What about you? Have your tastes changed since surgery? In which ways?- 10 replies

Struggling with preop diet
BoredFatGirl replied to Katheryn0303's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a hell of a time trying to go to sleep when my stomach is growling at me. Water will help, but also timing your meals can be really helpful as well! I am not sure what your pre-op diet consists of, but I currently eat roughly 600 calories a day, focusing on protein. For instance, when I get up, I go as long as possible without eating, then I have a protein shake. Roughly 4-5 hours later, I have a can of tuna with mayo & sriracha. After that is highly dependent on when I plan on going to sleep. If my husband and I decide to stay up and watch our shows, I like to snack, so I've pushed my last meal towards that time (which is roughly 200g of fat-free yogurt) so I don't feel like I am going without and so that I don't feel hungry before bed. -
I was sleeved 11/15 in NJ. I had no nauseau or pain, sore of course, and the gas/reflux was pretty bad (get those Gas X strips!) but that was because they fixed a hiatal hernial. I'm doing really well, so far down about 11 lbs per my scale. I'm eating protein shakes, sf jello & pudding, plain/vanilla yogurt (non fat), I can have milk, oatmeal, pureed veggies, mashed potatos, broth or pureed soup, SF Ice pops, crystal light, tea, water, gatorade etc. The yogurt cup or jello/pudding cup is about a serving for me per meal. I'm doing fine, don't feel overly hungry, my body tells me when I need to eat and I'm listening to it. Supposed to get about 45-60 oz of liquid plus 70-85 g of protein per day.. I feel like all I do is eat and drink trying to get it all in! After 3 weeks of soft/puree foods, then I will move to more of a solid. I'm glad I did it, and I was a nervous wreck! Good luck to everyone having their surgery this week and in the coming weeks. It truly does get better every day.

Couple of food and timeframe questions
CoachJosh replied to BabySheldon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 weeks out. Have been cleared for pureed/soft foods, and I don't really eat a lot. I am down 43lbs since surgery and am losing about 1lb a day. Daily Ill eat 1-2 yogurts, a couple of bites of cottage cheese and maybe a piece of lunch meat. Ill have some hummus or a pickle from time to time as well Not a lot. Im supposed to get in about 60-70 grams of Protein in a day, but I am only getting about 30-40. Doctor isn't worried about the protein, the key is fluids!! Water and fluids help break down the fat and that's what I most important at this stage! -
Hi, I think beef is very difficult to chew properly, and frankly I think it may be even too early for you to experiment with steaks. You may want to get comfortable with the soft foods first. If you really crave beef then try the meatloaf or Salisbury steak instead. You will need to cut it into very teeny-tiny pieces like a green pea, if you want to eat a beef steak. I have been also worried for a long time that I ate more than I should have. people have reported that they can only eat one cup of food at a time. However, I could always eat 2 cups of food. As long as they are low calorie options (fruits, vegetables, low fat yogurts etc) you may be just fine. For me when I eat my lunch, (I still finished it very quickly, in 10 min), I have to sit and wait 5-10 minutes - I try to browse the internet or read a newspaper until I feel that my stomach is full. Usually, it takes 10-15 minutes for the signal to go from your stomach to your brain and let you know that you are full. If you can manage to wait 5 minutes between "meal courses" you may eventually feel full at some point.

6 weeks out - how many calories are appropriate?
loridee11 replied to Fat2FabMyWay's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We have similar stats and surgery around the same time. I don't have much hunger, but I had a really easy recovery (yay!) and don't seem to have any food aversions or challenges with eating and drinking which means I've been able to push myself to meet my protein and fluid goals from early on. That means even though I'm limiting my meals to 3-4 oz lean protein (usually with light mayo or greek yogurt because I am still on soft foods, or I eat a lot of eggs) and then if I am still hungry some soft cooked veggies, I get almost 800 calories a day. Part of that is because I'm still using protein shakes to supplement I am seeing my surgeon and NUT next week for my 6 week. My weight loss has been really slow the last 3 weeks and I'm hoping it's just a stall and they'll have some advice to pick it back up. -

Actually, yes as Anita mentioned, I often have issues with milk and yogurt earlier in the day. So, you may want to find another protein drink to try.

I never had any issues with continued dizziness or anything. I could tell when I was not getting enough fluids in, and was dehydrated, I would get very lethargic, and grouchy!! I used Zero carb Isopure drinks 40g. protein in each bottle, I would try to drink half in the morning and half in the afternoon. I bought them at GNC, they are good for while you need clear liquids the first while following surgery, before you can do the shakes. I also ordered the unflavored unjury powder, 20 g. per scoop, and used it in broth, even mixed it up in my jello...you can use it in anything to boost your protein.(www.unjury.com) I also take a chewable vitamin, and the viactiv calcium chews. As for the new job...it sounds to me like perfect timing! It will keep your mind occupied, giving you less time to think of food!! Plus you mentioned worrying about not eating in the cafeteria...from the begining, you can be eating healthy around these new people, and then as you lose weight, they will attribute it to that...nothing else. They have not seen you go up and down in weight...they will see you eating your container of yogurt, or a salad, and as your weight drops...it won't raise questions. Or at least it wouldn't in my mind. Sounds ideal...Good Luck on the surgery, I am thrilled with mine, wish I had done it years ago!!! And good luck in the new job...sounds like you have a whole new life to look forward to!!! Kat

Can you get de-banded after being banded?
Erin18 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my doc said I could have yogurt I'm on full liquids now and it's part of the full liquids (: Popsicles are good -
I read a lot of posts and people say that your body don't really start to suffer until your about a month out with little to none protein.. I would highly reccomend that you turn it around and start getting the needed protein in because it will affect your muscle mass and instead of losing fat weight you will be losing muscle weight. There are soo many foods that are loaded with proteins (carb master yougurt, greek yogurt, milk, some sugar free puddings. Are you having problems with protein shakes? I am on thick liquids and I am only having to drink one protein shake a day..

Pastas, bread, pizza, steaks, sweet stuff
GreenTealael replied to Ana-Maria's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I went to Italy 4 months post op too, twins! I had a lot of coffee, salads, nuts, cheese, yogurt, fruit with some pizza, gelato and pastries thrown in (surgeon said I could although I assumed I couldn’t) because… it was Italy. Pharmacies did have ready made and powder protein for shakes. I shopped at local markets a few times and made a meal of my own at a cooking class. I was limited by capacity so that was nice. I did try to be balanced but still have fun. Surprisingly food was not the fun I ultimately had. Good Luck and have fun ❤️ -

Does Anyone Have Any Regrets?
ProudGrammy replied to betterthanbefore's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi marisa, rose You are lucky that you are only 31 - as you've noted above many people, including myself wish they had this surgery years ago. at your age i hope you don't have any health issues yet, or only a couple. The past few months before surgery, before i was having my food funeral, it was amazing how weight just piled on in such a short time. If i had kept eating, going like this - would now weigh............ As far as mourning food - i'm 3+ months out and i am usually ok without "wanting" the bad food stuff.. But i'd be lying if i didn't say i sometimes think about lasagna instead of yogurt. oh well. But just "thinking" about it. the truth is i could have 2-3 bites of lasagna, but to me thats a tease, so i would rather not eat it all. It is hard realizing for the rest of your life you'll be eating smaller portions, but healthier, other good stuff, but it is so worth it. I can tell, you are smart enough to know that. i am so happy i had this surgery, it is a life saver. i'm glad you are coming aboard too feeling better about the surgery too. welcome aboard newbie. continued good luck kathy -
I usually have 1 yogurt a day as a my snack. The goal is to keep me from starving in between meals. I don't know what it is, but whenever I eat yogurt, I am STARVING about an hour after I eat it. I wasn't this hungry before I had it. The sad thing is, I can't eat for another hour. This is the only time that I can't wait to eat, is after I have yogurt. I don't get hungry like this any other time of the day. And it doesn't matter when I eat it. I guess it just passes right through me or something.

hi , my band was place wrong from the beginning. so i didn't have a chance to enjoy the fruits, of the work i was going to put to losing the weight. i chewed tums for my heartburn, and gas. but, with all that i was going threw, i had other problems , i didn't know about , everything showed in the x-rays , but, no doctor, bothered telling me, like a big kidney stone, gold stones, which all this complicated, so much of my health and brings down your spirits, in trying to lose the weight.. since , your sick all the time ,you need to find out what else you may have , when i had problems,it was hard to chew the food small very small, cause, i was so hungry, and eating to much, then i became allergy, to some foods, as soon as. i put the food in my mouth i vomit it out ,i could hardly hold down any thing, so i couldn't eat alot of foods, trial and error, i didn't eat the same foods that made me sick the first time around, you'll get to hate them, chicken, pork, steaks, meats, in very small portions.. then came drinks, i was down, to potato's and yogurt, milk.. but, slimfast helped a lot, also. because, they were liquids .. at times i didn't want to eat, in fear of getting sick. Try to find a doctor, or buy your x-rays and see for yourself . in what could be wrong ........ Hoping you find relief sooner then later. and don't get discourage. just be careful.take Vitamins no matter what...... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ margie, band,4/5/04 emergency removal, 1/23/08 THUR PRAY AND SUPPLICATIONS MAKE YOUR PETITIONS KNOW TO GOD.
