  1. I have the sleeve and am 6 to 7 months out. I can eat whatever I want just smaller portions. I tend NOT to eat lots of bread or sandwiches cause it fills you too fast and you can't get your protein requirements, and its a different full feeling, like a bad one. My main diet consists of Eggs, chicken, steak, chili, salmon, tuna steak, yogurts, cottage cheeses, nuts and salads...I have the occasional slice of pizza or 1/4 of a piece of sub sandwich, but processed coldcuts dont sit to well with me.. You basically have to see what you like to eat again and you will be eating smaller, human sized portions of it. Like now I can barely eat 2 eggs and 4 oz of Icelandic yogurt for breakfast, where my old self would eat 3 to 4 egg omelette with cheese, 2 slices of toast with PB&J and 4 slices of turkey bacon, and 3 cups of coffee and still be hungry an hour later.. The major difference is separating your liquids from solids and not drinking with your meals, you dont realize how used to it you have become.
  2. Just had my first few teaspoons of custard. Went down smoothly and tasted good. Full after 4 tablespoons! My surgeon says eat anything liquid that you can get though a straw that is really runny, e.g. Custard, broth, runny yogurts, the higher in protein like Dairy is the better.

    Pureed Stage Protein Dilemma

When I was on the pureed phase, I did mashed tilapia or chicken (from a can). The chicken went down really well when blended with mayo, or yogurt like a little chicken salad. Also did mashed up canned beans, pintos or black. Or refried beans. You can even add sour cream to them. Cottage cheese is a great source of protein. For the 2 weeks I was on pureed, I pretty much ate the same things. I also made a ricotta bake (search for theworldaccordingtoeggface). She has recipes for all bariatric stages and gives the nutrition facts with her recipes. Great resource. Everybody has a different plan, and I was thankful I could have more than 3 meals a day, because in the beginning, I could only eat 2oz of protein per meal.
  4. I never blended anything (gag!) . We couldn't have fruits, rice, etc so I lived off ricotta bake (I broke the rules by using the sauce), Buffalo chicken dip, canned chicken, pimento cheese, Greek yogurt, and sweetened ricotta (like cannoli filling). I chewed till mush. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Refried Beans

My sleeve surgery was 10/17. I'm in the puréed stage. I pretty much live on yogurt and have just started having puréed refried beans. The serving size has 4 oz. I can eat two servings of these. I'm full afterwards, but not uncomfortably so. Is it because they're like slider foods, is that why I can handle 2 servings or 8 oz?

Weight gain in the first two weeks post op

I’m about 3 days post op and I too already jumped on the scale.. it’s showing that I am the same weight as when I went in for surgery, so maybe there’s a possibility I will have water weight from the IV fluids.. but I do now I started off pretty dehydrated the day of surgery soo my body might have absorbed all of what I got.. I haven’t had any hungry and just been trying to get my fluids and protein in as best as I can.. I’m feeling that that’s the hard part, plus I don’t want to drink to much at once because I feel I will over do my pouch too.. anyways tomorrow I’m going to try a little more solid food like yogurt or cottage cheese and see how it goes
  7. No with this Dr you are limited on the cottage cheese, yogurt and regular cheese. Like once a day then you can have a meat. I haven't heard anyone else on these boards talk about a diet like this at all so I am sure I get to be on the one in a million diet lol. I don't mind the blending its not like its a piece of raw chicken or something like tonight I am having pot roast I just put my portion in my pulverizor and away we go, tastes just like pot roast with a texture more like super mixed flakey tuna.
  8. Nope Dr wants us to move forward and learn how to listen to our new stomachs and you just cant do that with protein shakes. I can have eggs and if I didn't develop lactose intolerance I could have the cottage cheese and greek yogurt for the next two weeks
  9. You could stick with protein shakes, couldn't you? No cottage cheese? Eggs? Greek yogurt?

Can I get by without blending foods ?

I never pureed anything. I stuck to yogurt, eggs, refried beans, tofu, cheese, and yogurt in addition to protein shakes. I also am grossed out by pureed meat. The only exception was tuna, which I pureed in a food processor with a little mayo and salt and pepper to make tuna salad. Since tuna is often pureed, I didn't get grossed out. Good luck!

    Other food options

Refried beans with cheese and hot sauce. Ricotta cheese can be savory with spaghetti sauce or sweet with sugar free pudding mix. Greek yogurt with no added sugar. Icelandic yogurt.
  12. I never blended anything. I did fine with protein shakes, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, refried beans, Greek yogurt, etc. Some people can add eggs to that, I couldn't tolerate them until about six month out. Anyhow it's do able!
  13. I used to love yogurt before surgery. I have tried eating it a few times since my surgery and just can’t stomach it anymore. The taste just gets to me immediately. I also can’t eat tuna anymore. One thing I have found weird also is that my sense of smell seems to be heightened since surgery. I don’t know how or why, but I now smell everything way more than I did pre surgery.
  14. I'm doing well. I'm not quite up and all over the place yet, but the only thing that's hard so far is the puréed diet. Pretty much live on yogurt. My sleeve seems fine. Thanks for asking!
  15. That is true, I can no longer stomach sweet protein drinks or some yogurts 5'10 Sleeved 9/25/17 HW: 309 SW: 278 CW: 250 GW: 190
  16. @Berry78 yeah, we transitioned through the stages in 4 days. Of course everything had to be chewed to puree, and we had several restrictions, I was eating cheese, yogurt, and a few other things. Just because I was allowed, didn't mean I did. I eat mostly cheese, yogurt and protein shakes. But also some fish and chicken. I have heard that sleeve feel a lot more restriction than bypass
  17. I had my gastric bypass on July 17 had a complication while in the hospital so had a revision. So I am a little over 3 months post op and its been an on & off battle. I am glad & blessed to have the surgery & should of had it years ago. So I dont regret this blessing. I am struggling with gallbladder issues. My gallbladder has a mind of its own. Sometimes it is active and painful after drinking cold water sometimes its not. I still cannot eat solid protein like chicken, turkey or beef. I tried and tried and still either my stomach does not like it or my gallbladder doesnt like it. So I am back on premier protein, natural cheese and recently added lima beans, red kidney beans and black beans. I am also eating activia yogurt. I had a constipation problem and found that lima beans have resolved my constipation issue and so my bowel movements are so so much better. I dont even have to use suppositories or benefiber. Lima beans have taken their place! I had three ultrasounds on my stomach. Visually they only see sludge near my gallbladder. So the next test will be a hydroscan that will actually check the function of my gallbladder. I just have to wait till my next appointment(3 month followup) hopefully he will feel sorry enough for me to order it. Both my surgeon and my primary suspect that this next test will reveal more than just the visual ultrasound. So I am hanging in there with my lima beans and cheese and activia. My gallbladder wakes me up at night sometimes when my bladder is full. Weird. I have I.:'(interstitial cystitis) a bladder defect problem also inflammation. So it seems when my gallbladder is active it aggrevates my I.C. Geezz.. I am having so much fun with my gallbladder causing me problems and pain I guess that means I want more problems. Lol But still the surgery is a blessing to me and I am so happy I got it done! The problems I am having never outweigh the benefits I will continue to have from this surgery. I love the fact I can only eat so much. I love the restriction! I understand that later on in this process I may be able to eat more but I am eating healthier now... And I love it. I have gone 15 days without meat. Even though chicken, turkey and beef are good proteins I still feel great even though I cannot eat them. It is a process. It took me 2 months to understand my new stomach. I am taking my supplements everyday and set aside a monthly budget for them. Things are great. I look forward to reaching my goal even if it takes me longer than I planned. As long as you move forward in making healthy choices. God has given me strength and I will continue to lean on him for strength. God loves me God loves you. God bless you. Stay strong in him. Kisses

    Working post op

It depends on what you do. I have a desk job. I brought my insulated lunch box with my shakes inside and my yogurt. I had plenty of access to water. I brought in packets of Crystal Light type stuff. I was back at work 6 days after surgery. One day I treated myself to egg drop soup - but the sodium content messed with me. Wasn't really an issue, but I don't know what you do.

    I have a few answers

Today I talked to my surgeon's office - making sure they're receiving all the reports and clearances from my other various doctors/tests. Some came to them - others did not. I will need to chase down the EKG/release from the cardiologist, and the report/release from the pulmonologist, and my pap smear results. I have my Upper GI scheduled, and I'll need that report to get over to the surgeon afterward, too. Then I'll need to make an appointment to see my primary care physician, and get his clearance/release for the surgery. After that, my surgeon's office submits all the data over to the insurance company. It takes them a good 7 business days to give an approval for the surgery or ask for more information. Once that approval comes through, we set a surgery date, and then I see the surgeon 1-2 weeks before the surgery, for a pre-op appointment. I'll receive all sorts of info at that appointment - the pre-op diet, the post-op short-term diet, and this doctor's particular diet. I've been told by this surgeon that he doesn't want any of his patients to follow any other instructions other than his own. And they won't give me any of the diets until that pre-op visit. Because it's "too overwhelming". But well, I'm not sure how you're supposed to decide if you want to commit to something fully for the rest of the forseeable future when you don't know what you're committing to, ya know? But it sort of doesn't matter - I'm done with this lifestyle and the resulting body. I did look up the post-op diet for a lap band online: Days 1-4: Clear Liquids only! Days 5-14: Full Liquids only. Day 15-29: Soft mushy phase. These are foods that you could chew if you didn’t have teeth. Day 30: Back to a regular diet. This includes solid foods! Then I looked up what the "Lap-Band Diet" looks like - just to get SOME idea of what my future looks like: low-fat proteins (lean meats, fish, skinless poultry, eggs) fruits and vegetables healthy, whole-grain breads and cereals dairy products (good source of calcium, but choose non-fat or low-fat) heart-healthy fats It doesn't sound like a blast, but it does sound like what any person wanting to lose weight SHOULD be eating. So that's okay. Some high-protein foods (protein content and serving size): Lean red meat, fish, poultry (21 grams per 3 ounces) Cottage cheese, low-fat (15 grams per half cup) Tofu (9 grams per 4 ounces) Beans & peas (8 grams per half cup) Yogurt, regular, low or non-fat (7 grams per 6 ounces) Yogurt, Greek, low or non-fat (17 grams per 6 ounces) Eggs (6 grams per large egg) Oats (3 grams per half cup) Non-starchy vegetables (tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers) (2 grams per half cup cooked) The diet should include a variety of protein sources to provide the body with a balanced intake of nutrients. Planning high-protein meals is a priority. Many LAP-BAND patients continue to use liquid protein supplements (12-15 grams of protein per packet, on average) in their daily diet as a balanced source of protein and nutrients. Other things I found: Eat only three small meals a day - this is all you need. Do not snack between meals. Eat only solid foods at mealtime - this is how the LAP-BAND® works to restrict food. Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly, about 15-20 times a bite, until it reaches a liquid consistency - this will help to create the feeling of fullness and make it less likely for food to get stuck in the new stomach pouch. Stop eating when you feel full - eating too much can result in pain, nausea and vomiting. It can also stretch the new stomach pouch. Choose healthy foods - make sure you are getting enough protein and nutrients. Do not drink while you eat - this will wash down the food and you will not reach the feeling of fullness, defeating the purpose of the LAP-BAND®. Do not drink for 30 to 45 minutes before or after meals. It is important to drink plenty of fluids during the day in order to stay hydrated and replace the fluid that is lost due to weight loss. If you become dehydrated you may experience a loss of energy, lightheadedness, dry skin, and nausea. You should choose low-calorie liquids and try to drink about 6 - 8 cups of fluid a day Water is a good choice, but other drink options include low-calorie, non-carbonated liquids, such as artificially flavored drinks, broth, tea, and black coffee (without sugar). Avoid drinking fluids within 30-45 minutes of a meal. You do not want to drink before, as it will fill up your pouch with liquids and not leave room for food. You do not want to drink too soon after a meal, because the liquids will move food through your LAP-BAND® pouch too quickly. I can't imagine my surgeon's diet plan is going to look TOO different from the above. It's not like he's going to deter me from eating high-protein, low-fat foods. Or tell me to drink high calorie or carbonated beverages. Lol. He may be no carb, though? God I hope not. I crave those like nobody's business. But, it'll be whatever it is. And I'll just need to be fine with that. In the meantime, I'm going to have to start looking up ways to start shopping, meal planning and cooking the new way. At least I have a starting point now. I'm satisfied with today's answers.

    Scared senseless.... pre-op

I had VSG done 10/16. My SW was 283.1 and yesterday I weighed at 266.6. I’ve been getting my fluids and protein daily, and moving around as much as possible. Finally feeling normal with no head fog, etc. incision sites are almost healing, the larger one has a bit to go, and still some bruising, but can sleep on my sides and almost my stomach. Just trying to find some variety of full liquids between yogurt, soups, shakes, etc. You guys will do amazing, just stick the course. Walk as much as you can post op, but also listen to your body. Hydration is key.

    1 week post op

5 days clear liquid and 5 weeks full liquid. I do yogurt besides my crystal light. It's not easy, in fact it's very hard, but the stomach is new and healing. It's probably important for it to heal properly. I'd be afraid to try anything solid. The strained or blended to smooth soup is something I haven't tried just because it sounds gross to me. I also sleeved on 10/17!

    Need Encouragement 2 weeks out

You have a point, but the carbs in yogurt are not derived from white flour... Some people are more carb-sensitive than others. The original poster stated she's only lost 2 pounds since surgery. Perhaps removing crackers from the diet may help. That's all.
  24. Well heck there's carbs in low fat Yogurt. I'm practically living on that in my full liquid phase!

    1 week post op

I have struggled with that since the 3rd day of the pre surgery diet I had my surgery October 17th and hardly have eaten anything since. A little broth, some jello and water. I have lost 21 pounds but not the healthy way. My skin looks aged and dimpled I do not like any milk or milky type products. No yogurt I have texture issues as well. Today I decided to try some things that were not on my list. First, oatmeal with unflavored protein powder. Got a few bites of that down. Will work on it again tomorrow. Instead of eating plain broth I made my own in the crockpot. Put some meat and veggies and cooked them until falling apart. Put it in the blender and pulverized it. I put protein powder in with it and had success eating it. Maybe 5 baby spoon bites. What a difference in my energy level !!!
