Started liquid diet on the 31st

This is what I had to deal with tonight. My mom chomping away at a whopper with cheese as I ate Greek yogurt. It wasn’t that I wanted her sandwich my surgery is Tuesday I’m past the hungry hungry hippo stage. I’m at the I’ll vomit on your food stage cause it stinks. Made for an interesting ride home with the windows cranked open at 35 degrees out.

Almost a year out and scared...

There are two phases to weight loss surgery - the Weight Loss Phase and the Maintenance phase. The strategies for each phase is different. This is the approach I used in the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf It is common to have some limited weight gain after gastric bypass surgery. They call it a 20 pound bounce. The important thing is not let go beyond it. According to my nutritionist, meals (at one year post op and beyond) should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs after the first couple years post-op. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. Before surgery, I had constant hunger. When I was eating a meal, my mind was thinking what I would have for my next meal. It was incessant. Now the interesting thing that occurred after my RNY surgery was that I completely lost my hunger. It was not difficult to plan my minuscule meals because I wasn't really hungry. This condition does not last forever but for about a year and then the hunger returns. It just isn't as strong as before. I also had a sweet tooth before surgery. Chocolate by itself isn't the primary problem but the sugar is. During the winter I normally drink a cup of hot cocoa. But it must be the No Sugar Added variety. Also Adkins makes a number of chocolate treats that contain artifical sweeteners that might satisfy your sweet tooth.
  3. Hello! I got my gastric sleeve done on October 17th. I’ve been on full liquids for 4.5 weeks (2 pre-op, 3 post-op). Because I’ve been on this liquid diet for so long since my surgery I cannot stomach the yogurt or jello that I’m allowed to eat so I’ve mainly been on protein, water and soup. I’m supposed to start my puréed diet on Monday but I’ve been able to hold down puréed foods now for the last 2-3 days. Last week I started blending up my soups and I was able to keep that down with no discomfort, nausea or severe dumping. Yesterday I mashed up some avocado with lime and alittle salt and ate about two tablespoons (took me 30-45ish minutes but it got me full). Today I’m going to work and on my puréed diet I can have eggs and I wanted to make myself some scrambled eggs with skim milk because it’s easy and convenient. I should be good right? I felt bad even mashing up that avocado cause I was worried about messing up my new stomach but I had no problem and I actually felt really good getting some nutrients into my body

Yes, getting the protein in has been difficult. I'm on stage 3 diet so I'm allowed yogurt and ricotta cheese. I'm not a fan of Greek yogurt but I found it's more palatable if I add a little stevia. So two stevia packets to one container of yogurt. Stir. Then at meal time I mix 1 tsp of the yogurt with 1 tsp of the non fat ricotta cheese, I also get sugar free pudding, cream of wheat, creamed soups ect. That gives my protein a little boost. Plus a half a protein shake in between. I also have protein water so I'm trying to make every bite and sip count for my protein. Did they send you home with those little tiny medicine cups? My nurse gave me about a dozen and I'm doing like you. Filling them, lining them up and sipping on them as often as I am able. Have you been able to get out and walk. I just mapped my apartment complex and it's just about a half mile around the perimeter so I'm trying to do one or two laps every hour that I'm awake. 5. One month Post-OP and here is what I've accomplished:

PROS: Lost 22 lbs. No longer on blood pressure meds. No longer require CPAP.  No snoring. Dropped from size 18 to 16. My shoes fit better.  Increased walking from about 500 steps on day 1 after surgery to 12,000 steps per day after one month. Back to resistance training after 3 weeks and nearly up to my pre-surgery routine. Back to  yoga and slow regaining abdomincal strength. Full of energy. Calorie intake has increased from about 300 per day (first week) to about 900 per day (surgeons recommendations).  Discovered new protein foods like powdered peanut butter and nutritional yeast. Discovered that low fat yogurt and ricotta and cottage cheese can be quite yummy. Discovered that i can survive quite happily without alcohol, cofffee or sugar. Discovered that its incredibly empowering to be able to decline sweets and treats because I truly have no interest in them now.

CONS: I nearly killed myself because my feet got tangled in my too-loose pants at the top of the stairs. I pee twice a night. I don't poop nearly enough. My hips and butt kinda hurt from joint pain, I don't know why.  I do get pretty tired in the afternoon. I have some insomnia but I found that if I have a little snack before I got to bed, that I sleep better.

  6. I was sleeved on 10/17. Every protein shake and powder gave me issues. And Just couldn't deal with them. In the hospital I wasn't going to be calling for a nurse for diarrhea and be caught without their attention. At home I just didn't want to deal either. I would attempt to do a smoothie every other day with frozen vanilla yogurt, Greek yogurt, mango ice, (allergic to bananas) and V-Core vanilla bean protein powder, 1/2 scoop gives 15 g protein. By the time I was done, a 4oz glass was about 20-25g protein, and I could probably not have any issues if like I said I did this every other day. On pureed now.

    November sleevers here

Sleeved on Nov. 1. Recovery room was rough and I threw up a couple times. After that I was wheeled to a room and slept for several more hours. All total I slept 12 hours post op. People kept talking to me but I was so out of it. I don't remember my husband kissing me and going home for the night. I finally woke up at 9pm and drank some chicken broth and walked 2 miles in laps around my ward. Sipped water. Then I konked back out. I was up every 45 minutes going pee all night long. Woke up the next day (today) and felt great. Walked over 4 miles throughout the day waiting for hubby to pick me up at 5p. The staff was calling me marathoner. I inspired other patients to get up and walk with me. I had a small cup of yogurt and some tomatoes soup and a premier chocolate shake throughout the day. Good luck to all three other November sleevers. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. Mine is 14 days of liquid diet, day before surgery clear liquids only and colon cleanse. I’m allowed shakes, yogurt, cream soups, jello pudding and as much calorie free or low calorie fluids as I want.

    Cheating on liquid diet

My surgeon's requirement is to lose 10 pounds during the two week required liquid diet...although his liquid diet includes four cups of lettuce (2 tbl of low cal dressing) and two greek yogurts. I'm determined to do this 100% correctly. But I get the temptation for Thanksgiving Dinner. I'm the one in my family who makes the dinner (my stuffing is killer) and we have 20+ people to my house for a huge sit down feast. My surgery is on Nov 21 so I will not be tempted this year for sure and clearly not in any mood to cook or have guests. So I've told my family "I'm out...see ya at Christmas!" I've been to 44 Thanksgiving Dinners...I plan to be at least 44 more...so missing this one will be just fine.
  11. Our plan combined what most have as their first 2,3 or 4 phases (liquids, purees, mushes and soft proteins) into a single initial phase for the first month, progressing as individual tolerances dictate, with everything else added in after that according to tolerance. We had things like yogurt and scrambled eggs on the hospital menu along with the usual liquids - some can handle more than others depending upon inflammation, etc. The pureed lettuce they served put us off pureeing anything after that! Their general finding has been that patients do better as they move toward real food, but pace was largely dictated by individual need rather than a strict calendar. Thankfuily, it also negated the need for extensive liquid dieting pre-op to get used to the post-op world. It's all a big YMMV thing.
  12. My journey involving bariatric sleeve surgery began at 450lbs. My blood pressure was in true digits, both numbers, I had diabetes, and my doctor could only guess my BMI, because the chart went to 65, and I was over 70! My legs hurt all the time, and so did my back. I could eat 100 wings in a single sitting. I ate 32 tacos at once to show off. It was killing me. Almost 2 years ago, I started the bariatric journey, with Kathy Scutella. I got to the surgery date, but had to call it off because I had just gotten a job and without FMLA I would lose it. I have up for almost a year. Then I got better insurance, and met my current PCP, Dr. Kelly Wienecke. She encouraged me to look into bariatric surgery again. So, I did. I lost 68lbs before my surgery the second time through. That included the 16lbs I lost during the 2 week pre-op diet alone! I lost 7lbs in 7 days between my visit 1 week after the surgery with bariatrics and my appointment a week after that with my metabolic disease doctor. My one month goal is to be down to 300lbs or less when I see Kathy Scutella again. She said 20lbs loss would be good. I want to go for more. Protein shakes, salmon, eggs, yogurt, tuna, chicken all the time. I got healthy mayo and chicken broth to blend it up real good. I read things on bariatric pal all the time. It gives me hope for having some things I used to eat. It gets lonely being the only one not eating what's for dinner. One day, in moderation I can though. That's my short story. I've went from 450lbs to 314lbs in about 2 years. I got over 100 more left to lose.

  14. It will get easier to hit your goal as you get further out from surgery. It's a learning process to find what works for you. If you hate shakes, find high protein "real" food to hit your goal. The leaner the meat the higher the protein. Not plugging a product: Quest bars are high protein low sugar but 21g carb. Honestly, Meal bars are just as dense as eating real food. This is just an option take it or leave it -- The goal is healthy so, If you have to choke down a shake in order to hit your goal. here are a few recipes to try. coffee mocha shake: Vanilla protein powder. Instant coffee and sugar free chocolate syrup Ice Pumpkin pie: Vanilla protein powder, pureed pumpkin and cinnamon ice Strawberry-Banana Smoothie: Vanilla protein powder, Greek yogurt frozen strawberries frozen banana ice Reese's peanut butter cup shake: Vanilla protein powder, PB2, sugar free chocolate syrup ice Be creative and keep an open mind to try new things. You will find what works for you.

    November sleevers

When I went to my pre op class I asked about the coffee. They said I had to give up the creamer. So I put my protein drink in it instead. They told me that was fine. After surgery though I'm only allowed 12 oz of coffee, which to my calculations comes up to 2 cups a day with my new tool, as long as I continue to put the protein drink in it until I have to ween off of it. After that I'll figure out what I need to do next. As for the pre op diet, they have me on a weight loss diet of a protein drink in the morning 4 to 6 oz of lean meat with non starchy vegetables for lunch and dinner with a snack in between meals of either cottage cheese, yogurt, protein drink, cheese sticks, or a protein bar. I don't start full liquids until Sunday. I've doing well with the first part so far, Next week should be the real test. How is it going for you @confusedturtle3?

    Weight Loss Stall, Frustrated

You are doing great with your weight loss. over 100 down is fantastic. It's normal for weight loss to slow down as you get further out from surgery. A few things to try to break the stall. Are you logging your food? It's better than guessing your calories and carbs. (myfitnesspal food log app makes it easy) The amount of food you are able to take in will increase. Try eating protein with as much veggies as you want. The bulk and fiber will make you feel full. I can eat 4 to 5 oz protein with 8 oz of salad. Your weight can slow if you are doing the same exercise or same intensity level over and over. HIIT / High intensity interval training works well. Start a pace that you are comfortable for 5 mins. Increase the speed several numbers for 5 mins. Repeat this process for as long as you are on the treadmill. (hope that made sense) You already know carbs can mess with your weight loss. My dieticians instructions were to add healthy carbs when I lost 75% of my weight to slow or stop my weight loss for maintaining. Your instructions may be different than mine. Follow your dieticians plan. Salty and sweet cravings happen. Be sure to have healthy options on hand to satisfy cravings. Example: Salty Jerky or quest protein chips Sweet yogurt or sugar free pudding with protein powder.

Where are you 1 year post op?

Day of surgery 246.9. One year out I was (to the day) 171 so down 75 pounds. But, I really look at my high weight which was end of April 2017 at least the recorded weight - 271.5 I think I was higher at points, but didn't get on the scale and my weight now - at 14 months out at 166. I'm down 105 pounds. In an average day I eat about 1,000 calories with 60-90 grams of protein, and 64 ounces of water minimum. I usually start with a shake (fairlife skim, protein powder and 1/2c fruit for 35 g. protein), lunch is usually 3 oz grilled chicken with a salad and dinner is whatever the family is eating. Snacks are usually Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, fruit or cheese. I eat a pretty normal diet. Best of luck to you.
  18. I use Genepro Medical Grade Protein powder. I bought it on Amazon.. $30 or $40 , don’t recall, but it has 30 servings in it. Each scoop is approx 30g protein (same as 1 premiere shake) I use a scoop of it and put it in my broth. It has NO taste. Once I move on to more foods I will add it to my yogurt, cottage cheese, anything. When you use it, to avoid clumping, I mix the protein powder in a few oz of liquid first. Mix it well to get rid of any clumps then I add it to my larger portion. I tried it as a recommendation on here from someone else. It works great for me!

    Cheating on liquid diet

My surgeon said any solid foods (other than my 1 yogurt/day) during the 7 day preop period will disqualify me for surgery. Other surgeons may not be as strict but mine is. I don’t know how they would know you ate but I don’t want to chance it. I’ve waited a long time to get my surgery and I don’t want to do anything to risk losing it. I am having a family pre-Thanksgiving meal on the 10th because I am supposed to start my preop diet on the 13th, surgery on the 21st. That will give me plenty of time to enjoy the Thanksgiving yummies and use the bones for broth for my Thanksgiving dinner. Have a great day! Amanda [emoji16] HW 248 CW 241 Surgery Date: pending 11/21/2017. Goal weight 150’ish [emoji23]
  20. I am at the puree stage but was in the same boat when I was at the liquid stage. I could not tolerate ant pre-made protein shakes. I had the unflavored ISOPURE and I added it to my soup, you can add it to your water (works great with a flavor packet) and I also made my own protein shakes with it that were delicious. I did unsweetened almond milk, ice, a scoop of protein and strawberries and bananas. Now that I am at the puree stage I can tolerate 2-4 ounces of the premaid shakes between meals (which is my plan from my doctor). I was sleeved on the 19th and after one week was allowed greek yogurt and cottage cheese which made a world of difference. If you are allowed sugar free pudding the isopure works well in that as well. Good Luck!

    July 17th

Man this weekend was rough.. My husbands Aunt died and we had to go out of the town to pay our respects. So that means.... Restaurants.. First restaurant his family wanted to go to was Chinese food Buffet.. So $24.99 a plate and lots of grease later...... I am a bit sick.. I tried to stick with veggies and the meat that is mixed in it, but they cook that with lots of oils. So i had more salad than anything.. Just not filling plain old salad. Ok then next day.. Well gee lets go to PIZZA... Soooooo here I go again. Hubby ordered medium pizza, deluxe, and I had one slice and I was done.. The place we stayed at was last minute so they had no groceries and it was too late to go shopping. So all morning I lived off cheese strings.. That was ok.. But I went to grocery store and got yogurt for my breakfast the next day.. No Protein Premier in Montreal, Quebec that I seen. So i was a bit ticked. Anyways I weight myself today and from last week i lost over 10lbs.. How did that happen. I hav eno clue. I thought I would of gained it from this weekend.. I am also still having to eat every 2 hours. My stomach is in like lots of pain. hunger pain, and I just can't keep up with eating.. I am constantly making meals and having LOTS of left overs but how long do they last in fridge.. 2 days???? So how is everyone else doing with their WL.

    Struggling with Protein

At 12 weeks out, you might be able to do without the shakes. Protein can come from food. Yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, nuts/seeds, beans, tofu, meat, seafood, etc. You are getting biotin in your One A Days, so I'd drop that, but you need to add calcium citrate (500mg two or three times a day) and 500mcg B-12 once a day. I agree with the above. Double up on the One A Days (making them 4-A-Days!) Lol.

I don’t have to do clear liquids till the day before. Right now I’m allowed yogurt and cream soups. But I also have to do a bowel prep, night before surgery.

    STARVING!!!

I’m the same and found potato soups good too, I also have a yogurt in between my soups just to help the hunger Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. I ate a lot of refried beans. I also would pour some of the liquid out of lentil soup and put my immersion blender in it to eat the thickened lentils and vegetables. I ate greek yogurt and tofu. I think I was allowed to eat string cheese at that point as well. I was allowed to have eggs then, but only had them a few times at that stage.
