Success with weight loss is dependent on getting the upper hand with your relationship with food. There is a psychology behind eating patterns which have taken WLS patients into the realm of obesity. Though I am not a physician, I do feel that you would benefit to see a nutritionist to devise a healthier eating plan. As a psychology professional, I can say that the other part to your equation is to reign in on your choices of food, and accept that we must adjust our beliefs about food. We must revise our thinking to "eat to live" rather than "live to eat" if we want long term success with weight loss and maintenance. I have found it useful to use sipping Water or other no calorie drinks and distraction to keep my thoughts away from feelings of hunger. And I also use "self talk" and ask myself prior to eating anything which I know I should not have, do I really want this, or would I prefer to continue to move towards my weight loss goal? The band is around your stomach, not your mind. You have an incredibly self empowering tool to use for weight loss... Best wishes....

Did anyone's insurance call...
WantToBe replied to bridgetsband's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just beware! Insurance companies sole purpose is to make money! I'm sorry to sound cynical but they do not care about you or your weight loss. Whenever my insurance company calls me I ask questions and terminate the call. They can and I'm sure do at times use the informational provided to them as a basis for their decisions. It is important to always know to whom you are speaking and why they want to know certain things about you. -
I didn't have to have anymore tests, thank God!!! But I do have an appointment with the nutritionist May 19...after that, all my information and test results will be submitted to insurance. But the appointment started out by me getting a "before picture", then getting my blood pressure, weight, and height, with no shoes (which made me shorter by 1/2 inch and made my Bmi go up lol), then I stood on a scale looking thing and held a pole type thing in each hand and it printed off all kinds of wild information like, how any calories I burn on a typical day without exercise, just at rest...it even told how much my right arm, left arm, right leg, left leg, and trunk weighed. I was told by the nutritionist who came in my room for a few minutes that 100 to 105 lb weight loss would be right for me. Then the Dr. came in and said that the sleeve is the surgery he would also recommend for my size...he listened to my heart, my pulse in both sides of my neck, he examined my stomach for hernias and where the incision sites would be, and he checked my ankles. I will have a two day liquid diet before surgery. I will have a drainage tube. He didn't foresee me having problems. I'm hoping my insurance is approved by mid June and surgery is scheuled no later than August 1 because I want to be feeling better by the time my daughter goes back to school August 20! I will update...everyone take care and God Bless!!!

Showing during pregnancy
Banana14 replied to Crystal Hobbs's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I haven't told my surgeon I am pregnant. I have an OB that has extensive experience with weight loss surgery pregnancy patients so I have followed her directions. I am scheduled for my follow up next month with my surgeon and will communicate to them at that time that I am pregnant and will follow up after the birth of my baby. That's just the way I chose to go. You do whatever is best for you. I am confident after the birth of my son that I will be able to continue the rest of my weight loss journey. -
How long after your surgery did it take to start seeing any results? I AM 2 weeks post op and have lost nothing since the surgery. Yes, I know I'm impatient but with the first 2 weeks consuming nothing more than 2-3 protein shakes on most days and seeing either a gain or plateau, I'm discouraged.

I am definitely no mathematician so I am not sure about your calculations. But I lost ALL my weight within the first year of surgery and kept it pretty much off up until a couple months ago. So a little over 5 years. I think at 5 months post-op I was down 40lbs

I'm on my second day liquid diet. Day 1 was rough, but I got through it. Surgery day is March 6. Has anyone did the complete two weeks of liquid, and if so, how much weight did you lose.

Don't have that insurance. I would suggest you call them and ask what is required for weight loss surgery. They will be you're best bet in determining the requirements. Prepare yourself because most insurance companies require a lengthy supervised diet before approving. I will say that all the hoops you may have to jump through will be well worth the effort. I had medica insurance. It took 9 months to get through the whole process. My insurance required a 6 month supervised diet but it took longer to get through everything. Good luck to you!

I was cleared at 3 weeks post op for everything as long as I listened to my body. I had a pain on my right side for a couple of weeks (2&3) and had to take it easy, but it's gone now and I've been doing heavy weights, minus the abs for now. I'm 4 weeks post op tomorrow.

Oh Yeah. I am the queen of the fat thigh. Actually, my entire legs are fat. I lost 145 pounds, and the hanging fat roll (one thigh only) never seemed to change much, just looked deflated. Had a 360 lower body lift, and then a vertical thigh lift. Still have fat thighs. The skin still has some laxity, lots of cellulite, and not smooth like I wish. After the thigh lift, the roll was gone, and skin was much, much better, but as I described above. I had really bad saddlebags (my whole life, but the heavier I got, the less pronounced they were) that the surgeries I had seemed to make them more pronounced. So, 2 weeks ago I had some pretty significant liposuction on them. Too soon to know how the results will be, but one thing is certain, they will still be where I carry the most of my weight. Still with loose skin, fat, wrinkles. So, you'd think I'd be unhappy, but I'm not. They are so much better than what I started from. It's all relative. Even without plastics, in spanx and clothes, they looked perfectly fine.

At my first appointment I met with the surgeon and he discussed the differences between lap band, sleeve, rny and we decided on the type I wanted...they also took vitals and weight and the doctor did a short exam. Then I met with the insurance coordinator who went through my insurance requirements. My insurance required 12 months of visits with the nut. A week later I saw the nut and saw her once a month for 12 months. During that I also had my 2 mental health evaluations. At my last appt they gave me a date and sent everything to my insurance.

Weight loss concerns, or lack of weight loss
ShoppGirl replied to Virginia M's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just be patient. It is impossible to eat as few calories as we eat post surgery and not lost weight. Your body is just adjusting. I have learned from many others on this site that happens to most of us within the first month and is often around week three and called the three week stall for that reason. If you do a search for the term you will see how common it is. Stick to your plan and you will be losing before you know it. -
My sweet brother got me a White Castle milkshake
FrankyG replied to lahhleslie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That was really nice of him to think of you, but please don't drink that shake. It might be fine, but it also might give you a bad sugar rush and have even worse consequences. I ate a few bites of ice cream about a month out (birthday party), and it caused a dumping syndrome incident. I threw it up, started sweating and shaking and felt like I was dying - had to lay on the floor of the bathroom for about 30 minutes until I felt like my legs would hold me... I never tried that stuff again! Even if you don't have a bad reaction, you should not be eating anything with that much sugar in it so soon after surgery. You are trying to do a hard reset of your diet. Easing back into how you eat, what you eat and relearning to eat healthy. Milkshakes are not healthy at all, and you don't need to have them around until much, much later when your weight is stable and you can indulge yourself for special occasions. I know how hard this is, but you have to stay strong! -
I lost 60 lbs in the 5 months before surgery. I knew I would just gain it all back without the surgery. I want to lose at least 75 more pounds. I love reading the success stories and find them very encouraging. I had surgery on 1/16/17, and I have not lost anything since. I am so afraid this will not work. I am 68, and have a bad back, so exercising is not easy. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Good for you for the pre-op weight loss! I lost 99 pounds (from 397 to 298) during my six-month, insurance-required diet program. It set me up for a successful surgery and post-op life. At first, I was worried that I wouldn't have as much success after the surgery, but I have. I've lost another 65 pounds since the surgery 3 months ago! Good luck as you continue your journey!

Thank God! I thought that I was going to gain everything I lost back but I got another fill today so I am hoping this will get me some good restriction. I met up with my Doctor in the Elevator today! We had a nice chat. I told him that I have to travel 2 hours to see him but he's worth it. LOL! I asked Dr. L about my goal weight and he said that he doesn't like to set a goal weight because he doesn't want you to get discouraged if you don't get down to it. He indicated that there are specific guidelines and I told him I knew that my ideal weight is between 155-175 and he thought that for my height that it was to low. He said go until you feel good. Which is what I was planning to do anyway. I also told him I don't remember ever being under 200lbs and that would be my next goal. I want to get to onederland. 60lbs away from it....with the extra 3lbs that I have gone up in the last week. Hopefully, I have that gone in a few days with being on liquids. I am feeling a little different with this fill. I don't know if it is just me or what but I feel fuller even without eating. Keeping my fingers crossed. I weighed in at the Doc's office at 263.50lbs. I go by my scale which is 3.5lbs lighter. So my real weight today was 260.

Keep Off Help
alwaysvegas replied to Stephanie Salsera Perrott's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Having no hunger hormone (ghrelin) and a limited capacity for food have helped me tremendously. I generally want food when I need energy and if my head hunger is pushing me to overeat, I simply can't. However, for long-term success, I am still in charge of what goes into my body. I still make choices not to eat calorie-dense/innutritious foods. So I still have to deal with the head hunger and turning to food as a coping mechanism. I still have to make a choice to exercise. Just as it was before surgery...too many calories in/not enough out=weight gain. The sleeve is a wonderful tool, it truly is. Best of luck to you! -
I feel like I have no friends and am having trouble making friends... my best friend has become toxic and is moving away... I feel like I only maintained that relationship because I was scared of being alone... and now I actually will be... in 20y/o and a sophomore in college. I fell like people passed judgment on my size last year and that's why I had no one, but I don't know what to do anymore... I don't want to be friends with people who only like me b/c I lost weight, but I am scared to be alone.... I don't mean to rant... but I'm upset and nervous and scared... anyone on this site ever have a similar experience and tips? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi Courtney - Just wanted to say Hi and welcome from another Cortney (just no U) and we are the same age. Small world. I just got banded but I am dreading the day I plateau. I have a little more weight than you so post op here I have been losing pretty good. From the start of my pre op diet to now I have lost a total of 22 lbs. It is not even a month yet for me from the start of my pre op diet. I just hope it keeps going like this. I love walking, it is just hard for me down here because of the heat (which seems to be less frazzling to me lately) and where I live, no sidewalks and street I live on is a danger zone for walkers, riders, etc. I have a Wii and before surgery I did get My Fitness Coach for it and look forward to starting to try that and see what that does for me. What do you like to do? Dance? Aerobics? Think of something you like to do and then try doing it. For awhile I was putting on my favorite cd and just started dancing around my living room to it. Moving and bending, just doing my own thing for at least a song or two with the intention of working up to the whole CD which would be about a 45 to 60 minute workout depending on the CD. I was going to get some arm and leg weights to help too at a point. Still think I might do that. Just thought I would share that with you to see if that gives you a few ideas to change it up. I am always happy listening to music and singing to myself. :cursing: Oh side note, my husband and I want to move to NC. We have good friends in the Charlotte area and I have wanted to move to NC for awhile. We have looked from Raleigh to Greensboro to Hickory. (Getting that feeling of having a double out there...now if you say your birthday is in April we are going to have to talk.) Look forward to getting to know you!

Embrace the lack of appetite, it won't last long and you will miss it in a few months or a year down the road when you suddenly have a very normal appetite again. A few days of not eating much a month is something that won't hurt you and if anything will help you hit goal faster. I am 28 months post-op and while I'm on depo, so there's no TOM there are 1-2 days a week where I'm just not hungry, so I don't eat much those days. I generally don't have much of a desire for food in general, but on days where I'm extra turned-off on the idea of eating it's great because it gives me a day of lower calories and a few ounces less on the scale, that I end up making up and gaining back a few days later. I'm at maintenance right now, but when you're losing, a few days a month with no appetite is a blessing, lol. Enjoy it!

Hola, quick update. Its been since Oct 5th since my last fill and I have lost about 30 pounds. Im back to 199-200 and been stuck here since the weather really went cold on me and I cant go running. I hope to get to 189 lbs as my goal weight which isnt far away now. My wife keeps telling me that Im losing too much and that I wont lok right "skinny" and that my thick baseball player legs and footballer butt is going away and she donest like it... I guess I better start lifting again rather then just losing weight. So, my goal is 189 then back up to 200 but with muscle.. guess Ill check bak when i hit my goal weight in about 11 pounds. -jes

I've got this...thoughts on summer vacations pre and post surgery
jendolly posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
For the last few years I have made the trek back home to visit my family. Last summer I was an emotional and physical mess. I looked horrible, felt horrible and really didn't want to go because I was so ashamed of the way I was. This summer, almost five months out from my surgery (febuary 8) and about 75 pounds down, I made the trip. While I was there I lost more and even rode bumper cars and go karts. I wouldn't have fit in either one last year. My dad just kept saying that I could do so much more than I did last year. He's right, I can. As I close in on my first hundred pounds gone and I get back into the swing of things on the homefront, I keep thinking about the evolving me...I really am doing it and I'm going to whatever it takes to get to my goal of 140 (started this at 344). Current weight is 253! Sent from my SM-P900 using the BariatricPal App
