  1. I am almost 3 weeks post surgery - transitioning from a 12 year old lapband to gastric bypass. I lost 200 lbs on lapband and gained 120 of it back over two pregnancies. I am in shock of how ill-prepared I was for this transition. The lapband came so easily to me. I lost weight quickly, followed all the rules, etc. This time around, I am struggling to eat, sleep, take my vitamins, etc. I am severely depressed (Covid-19 doesn't help this), physically uncomfortable, and I feel hopeless. With that said, I've lost over 25 lbs in 2 weeks, I'm not having nearly as many actual eating problems as other people who had this surgery, and I know I'll get through this. I do not regret the decision at this time.
  2. Not really, besides some 10 minute walks.

Help I cheated on preop diet.

If you put 10 WL surgeons in a room..... i would venture to say.... All 10 would have something different they require of their patients. With the band (2009) i was required to the the 1 week of full liquids and 1 week of clear liquids.... the PO i had to do it in reverse... 1 week of clear (so two week total), 1 week full, 1 week puree, 1 week soft to regular. Sleeve (8/28/2019) I only had to do one week clear post op..... and then the same as above PO. I would say do the diet your dr. gave too you. Some people choose to go start before the date give and i still don't know why. This was soooooo hard. But like everything...This to shall pass. It was hard.... but so worth it.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Hello everyone, I had my VSG on July 7th. First week I dropped about 10 lbs which was great. The past 3 weeks I have lost 3 lbs. Do you guys know the reason for this long stall? And how can I break it? I’m getting really frustrated

    Worried about never reaching goal.

yes -- there are people your height who have done it. Regardless of height, though, the average weight loss is around 70% of excess weight. However, that is an average - and with any average, there are people who fall on either side of that. There will be those who lose less - and those who lose more - even some who'll lose 100% of their excess weight. My surgeon said only about 10-15% of his patients make it to a normal BMI, and research appears to back that up, but people do it - you'll find examples of that right here on BP. It'll take a lot of work and commitment, but it's not impossible.

  8. I gained 20 lbs after hitting my lowest point (138). I really needed to gain the first 10 lbs of it - I'd gotten too thin. But I've been struggling to lose the last 10 because I DIDN'T need or want that part of it (have managed to lose like 3 of it -- since March! It's tough...) anyway, I still track my food intake, but I've been doing that since my surgery in 2015 (actually, even BEFORE surgery). I've made a serious effort to stay within my maintenance calorie range, which for me is 1500-1700 per day - and I'm trying to stay at the low end of that (1500). I also really increased my exercise. My primary exercise these days is biking, which I usually do for 60-90 minutes a day, five or six days a week. It's working, but it's S-L-O-W. I know if I lowered my calories even more, to like 1200, the weight would come off faster - but I'm evidently not ready or willing to do that yet or I'd already be doing it. BUT....I'm sure it would work. at this point I just count calories - and I've been doing that since I was about a year out from surgery. I can eat anything as long as it fits into my daily calorie limit. I know that doesn't work for everyone, though. I know several people who are trying to lose regain doing Keto, or Weight Watchers, or Intermittent Fasting. And many just go back to what they were doing the first year post-surgery (not all the way back to protein shakes and purees, but back to protein first, then non-starchy vegetables - and then maybe an occasional serving of fruit or whole-grain carb) it basically comes down to what works for you and what you think you'll be able to sustain long term. Losing regain is hard and it's slow, but it's do-able
  9. I also had the lap band 10 years ago and loved it. I lost over 100 pounds and life was good until the gastric reflux started. It got so bad I was aspirating stomach acid into my lungs and I had to sleep in a chair. They removed all of the fluid from the band and the reflux went away and then I started on the track to get a revision to a sleeve. It seemed to me that I shouldn't have had to gone through the whole program for approval again but I did. I'm now waiting to get my surgery date finally after 6 months, which was probably a little longer because of Covid. Unfortunately having the band deflated and my gym closing (I was working out like crazy and now I've just stopped) I've gained a ton back. I'm so frustrated. Hoping to get the sleeve in 4-6 weeks, fingers crossed.

    Not losing weight

hey there-I had mine on 7/14 as well-you've lost 10 lbs! I have lost 8.....let's be patient because I think this is a bizarre experience that really does require a whole lot of following the rules-I feel like its my fault because i didnt pay close enough attention to how much and what I can take in-a friend of mine who also had this surgery years ago tells me this is normal-also I feel like i try harder everyday to be precise about my intake and exercise-hoping for another two lbs this week
  11. Like everyone here I have struggled with my weight my entire life. It didn't help that growing up my family fat shamed me. I became a closet eater early on, and brought that into adulthood with me. I have been on every diet out there, and as all of you here they worked for a while. I am now the heaviest I have ever been, even when I was pregnant. I am beating myself up every single day. In addition to the self esteem issues, the health issues of being overweight are a concern. I am so tired of the anxiety that I feel every time I go to the Doctor and I know I have to get on the scale. From January to March of 2020 I lost 15 pounds, I felt amazing, I was on a roll. Then Covid-19 happened, and all of a sudden I am working from home. My entire routine has changed and I am still having a difficult time finding the "right" routine. Needless to say I have gained back the 15 pounds that I lost and more. That was the moment I decided to explore bypass surgery. I made an appointment and did my research before my first appointment. I decided on gastric sleeve because I feel that is the best option for me. I have my nutritionist consult on 7 August. At the Doctor appointment, the nurse told me to start drinking 1 protein shake a day for breakfast, which is not an issue since I've been drinking protein shakes forever. My confusion comes in for the rest of the day. My surgery is 6 months out. Do I begin the Pre-Surgery diet now? 350-400 calories per meal, 150 calorie snack etc? Or should I wait until my consult with the nutritionist? Also, the nurse told me I cannot gain any weight between now and my surgery. Any advice you can provide is appreciated. 😁

    Going in wrong direction-Help

Agreed. Protein shakes for me were poison. I ended up in the hospital really serious issues. We have to be careful not to tell people what to do. We should suggest what worked for us, and how it worked, why it worked. And what didn't work for us. Then our bariatric friends can try different suggestions on. Making statements With "you need to" Or "you have to" Or "you should" - should only apply to YOU SHOULD CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR.... I try to let people know that you CAN turn around every 10 years out, and that we can still use our surgeries to benefit us

I am 10 years out. 64 years old. I went from 320 - 300 at surgery - to 165. I could never hold on to 165; but held on to 170 to 175 for about 5 years. Overweight, but had lost more than 70% my excess weight, and my doctors were VERY pleased; and so was I. A year ago I realized I was 220 pounds and freaked out. Decided to try to lose 10 pounds in a year. Nothing drastic. Once I started eating less, eating mindfully, intentionally, and using my VSG by eating protein first, increasing healthy fats, lowering carbs.... but keeping a daily treat.... changing HOW I ate, what I ate. I have lost an average of 3 pounds a month for the last 13 months. 41 pounds gone. I have some medical/physical challenges exercise is limited. No "working out" for me - but I swim during summer, do active gardening and dance in the living room when it is only the dog and I around. I only work on one pound at a time. I reset my personal goal at where I was comfortable.
  14. What happens if you test positive for covid 19, will that cause you to not get surgery? has anyone had this happen to them ( I am not currently positive) I just wanted to know given the current situation

5 years post op and have huge REGRET!

I can’t believe they waited so long and you haven’t been given the option of an RNY revision. Everything you’ve said sounds like be minus the extra surgeries and time. I’ve had GERD pretty bad for the last 5 months (Pepcid and protonix with tums) and a new hiatal hernia (had one repaired with my sleeve in December 2019) and my revision surgery is in 9 days. I definitely think you need a second opinion for sure! Sorry you’re in so much pain. I really hope you get answers soon!
  16. yes - it's the IV fluids. They pump you full of them when you're in the hospital. Among other electrolytes, there's sodium in those, which makes a lot of us hold on to water. I've heard of people coming out of the hospital up to 10 lbs heavier than when they went in. It'll work its way out of your system - but it could take a few days.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

I had surgery on 7/10/20. The first few days (maybe the entire first week) was horrible. I had so much pain and nausea, it was miserable to try to move and I definitely had second thoughts for a few days. I did force myself to walk several times a day once I was able to get the nausea under control. Three weeks later I’m 30 pounds lighter and I feel amazing. I still struggle getting my fluids in, and my pouch is having a hard time adjusting to puréed foods and softer foods. I just have absolutely no desire to eat food at all—there are no cravings and my stomach protests at the thought of trying to eat. I don’t think the process is the same for any two individuals. I do hope that the patches help you. Once the nause is gone life gets so much better!!

50 Days Post Op 50Lbs gone bye bye.

Whoop! Hope I can keep this pace going. I’m sure it’ll slow, my initial rolling seven day average was around 10-12 for the first couple weeks and it’s been hovering right around 4lbs a week since. Once I got past the low energy stage I feel like hyper-mode has been activated. No food issues. I’m capable of eating anything it seems nothing disagrees with me, just making good choices every day, and the restriction is still very high, an ounce or two depending on what it is. Ate some raw jalapeños even. I haven’t been this light since college (in the 90s). Doesn’t seem possible... wish I did this years ago.

    Going in wrong direction-Help

OK, I found my people. Good. I got sleeved 10/18 and reached my goal of 175. I am now in perimenopause. Such fun. Then I decided to try to get to 150. I got down to 161 and COVID hit. I never stopped tracking. I lost my job. So I was job searching, walking my doggos, doing Pilates for chronic back pain. Without the constant praise and reinforcement (and tight clothes) I wore to work, I started very slowly backsliding. I don't think wearing Pilates pants and sports bras every day helped. I got back up to 175 (14 lb. gain) and got pretty mad at myself. I am not going up a clothing size, I got rid of all my bigger clothes. Even though I was counting calories, I was just eating too many. I've been trying to remove snacks and higher calorie stuff. Now I've lost one whole pound. I did get a new job I really like so, I'm happy about that, but we won't be back in the office until Q4 or 2021. I just want help staying motivated. Thanks in advance!

Day 7 of fast - physical hunger sensations

I'm on Day 10 of the pre-op liquid diet, and I feel your pain! My only recommendation is to drink a shake whenever hunger pangs like that hit, even if it's right before bed. This is challenging enough... you shouldn't have to suffer unnecessarily!

  23. 10 lbs is month is pretty normal. I started at 373. I lost 16 lbs the first month and about 10-12 lbs a month after that. At about six or seven months out, it dropped to 5-8 lbs. I did eventually lose it all, though, so don't despair. your calories are fine. I wouldn't increase.
  24. I appreciate you posting this. I am 10 days post vsg & feel the exact same thing! Please keep us updated!
  25. I told fewer than 10 close friends & family, and no co-workers. I didn’t even tell my teen who lives with me. She obviously knows I had surgery, but not the details. She sees my weight loss and notices I eat less, but none of it has “clicked” for her. I think it’s funny. One day when she is more mature I will tell her. I’ve been working from home since March, and one colleagues commented that my face looks slimmer on a video call. Explaining that I have more time to focus on nutrition, and fitness since I don’t commute 2-3 hours per day seems to satisfy any curiosity. I’ll save the comments specific to my surgery for the people whose opinions I value. I have to say, though... the people I have told have been supportive.
