    Food Game--Let's Dish!

I'm 45, Female and a Foodie. Love to cook. Love ethnic foods from around the world. I do eat some meat, but love vegetarian. 216lbs Sleeved on Dec. 5 2017 Tons of energy that I credit to walking 7 miles a day. Walking has been the best tool i've ever found for weightloss. Love my Fitbit. Am interested in diets associated with the most longevity and less cancer risk...so I'm trying to balance my animal proteins with more plant proteins and healthy fats, nuts, etc. Mediterranean Diet and Mayo Clinic Diets are my favorites. I am a fruit and vegetable *****...and I have a terrible sweet tooth that I have to keep a careful leash on. (but do allow it a little action now and again) I love carbs, but have learned to pick better carbs, eat them in moderation, and pick low glycemic carbs to avoid hunger boomerang. Here's a pic of my lunch. Tofu chili, 150 calories and 16g of Protein. The wassa adds another 45 calories and 2g of protein:)

    Failing already

Thank you everyone! You kept me motivated throughout the rest of the day yesterday & this morning. It's so damn hard to stop letting food control me. I literally have to look at motivational quotes when I think of eating something that I'm not supposed to. I'm eating low carb and being a vegetarian... it's even less options, but worth it! Thanks again ♡♡♡ Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. I think nutritionists should ditch the standard advice - if the nutritionist is going to dish out standard advice the patient can as well refer to a high gloss booklet. Costs less money and might be more informative as well in some cases. IMO nutritionists should give out tailored advice. For standard advice: see a booklet. When visiting a nutritionist when it comes to bariatric surgery I demand that the nutritionist is able to do a few things: - different surgeries and the challenges that come with them, this includes supplement advice according to bloodwork - different dietary approaches (e. g. the low carb approach vs. the pound of cure) - being able to advice patients of different cultural backgrounds when it comes to food choices - being able to change gears when one approach obviously doesn't work instead of scolding the patient and telling him to "just try harder" - being able to cater to different dietary preferences of patients (might not be a good idea to advice patients to eat more fish when the thought of eating fish makes the patient want to gag, you maybe also shouldn't advice "lean meats" to a vegetarian) - being able to incorporate the patient's activity level and lifestyle into the dietary advice (e. g. shift workers, patients with high activity levels)

    Issues with certain foods

I’m on my 4th month post surgery and I’m vegetarian now. I can’t digest much without getting really sick or throwing up. I can eat: string cheese, soy protein snacks I order online, cucumbers, lactose free cottage cheese with berries, pistachios (100cal) and basic protein shakes. that’s about it!! I order my expensive soy protein items online and they are just fine. Low Carb, calorie. Pasta, pretzels, snacks. I was able to eat ground turkey for a while but can’t anymore and cannot digest anything else. I’ve tried.. I won’t go near heavy carbs though as I’m in the 180’s now and my weight does stall often even with gym all the time...
  5. It should def track workouts. And it would be nice if you could customize your own personal macro goals or have it do it for you based on your diet preferences. (Ex: someone following a reg bariatric diet will have different macros than someone following keto or a vegetarian etc) Reminders to enter food and workouts would be awesome too
  6. Ahh that's a bummer! There are certainly other options for vegetarians. Creating and providing recommendations specific to different diet preferences like vegetarianism is key, this is very helpful thank you!
  7. I really like my nutrionalist, she is very friendly and nice. I do wish she had more info for me as a vegetarian. She gave me tons of packets of info and sample meals, but nothing vegetarian specific. Her main advice on it was that i would be supplementing with shakes and bars for much longer than a meat eater. 8. (Cross-posted from the Vegetarian forum due to low traffic there.) The more I've been learning about fruit the more I want to make it a part of pretty much every meal, as well as having regular servings of whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, etc. I'm having gastric bypass so there's a greater risk of dumping syndrome. I'm wondering if these healthy but carb-y foods also cause dumping, or if it's mostly just refined sugars and high-fat foods. I'm particularly interested in your particular experiences rather than what we might assume should/shouldn't cause dumping. Thanks in advance for any advice!
  9. I’m 20 days post-op and the only things I can tolerate are popsicles, chicken broth, cream of wheat, and vegetarian refried beans. I’ve tried other suggestions on my approved list but they cause a lot of pain when I eat and I feel miserable. Anybody have any suggestions or tips for me? Anything would be greatly appreciated!! 10. Hi all, I just started the full liquids phase of my post-op diet, which includes days 6-14. I’m doing relatively well with everything in terms of getting my water and protein in, but switching to this full liquid phase has been difficult. I was really looking forward to tomato soup, but my nutritionist says to mix it with skim milk or soy milk, and the smell of those mixed together makes me want to vomit. I got down some earlier, but I can’t even stand to smell it now. I also tried cream of mushroom and it made me want to vomit as well. I’m so bummed because I was really looking forward to having something other than sweet protein shakes to drink. My full liquid diet includes skim milk or soy milk, strained cream soup with milk added for protein, protein powders, low sodium V8 (tried and it was meh), slimfast with protein, carnation instant breakfast no sugar added, and premier protein. Any suggestions on how to get some savory/salty flavors in during this part of my diet? Maybe I could have a little soup without adding additional protein and continuing to drink protein shakes during this phase to meet my goals? I have my one week post-op on Thursday, so I’ll ask my nutritionist then, but I wanted to get all y’all’s opinion in the meantime. Also, I’m vegetarian, so all the meat options are out! Thanks for any help!
  11. @niseys4 hey there. I apologize for not responding way sooner. I’ve been off the grid, so to speak, for a while. Hon, it was hard for me to make the transition, but I eventually did and I’m so happy I did too. What helped me immensely is using the vegan/vegetarian recipes on www.budgetbytes.com. Such a great site. I think I make about 85% of my meals from there. Check it out! I’ll do my best to check in more often as well https://www.budgetbytes.com/category/recipes/vegetarian/vegan/
  12. My nutritionist has an entire alternate plan for vegetarian sleevers. Balanced and complete. I'm not a vegetarian, but she is, and she was thrilled that I wanted a copy of that strategy, too. I go a little from each list...I like balance:) Can't wait to have my chia pudding back. Just saw a cool recipe for chia seed pumpkin oats packed with protein. Looks like an awesome breakfast and I can't wait to try it.
  13. Thanks for this, vegetarian resources are hard to come by
  14. yes, it's from a vegetarian site, but that's hardly the point. The point was that lots of awesome plant based proteins exist that might provide a little variety and culinary splendor to an otherwise repetitive animal based palate. Meh, to each their own. Personally, I'm attracted to the longevity and health benefits associated with Mediterranean diet and other low animal protein, low animal fat diets. Not for everyone for sure...but plant based protein sources make a nice culinary change even for meat eaters. I'm pretty omnivorous. I like a little lean meat in my diet, too. Want to put your chia seeds and flax on a nice steak? Add some nuts and pumpkin seeds to your chicken salad? You have my blessing. LOL:)
  15. Love this guide. Planning to replace as much animal Protein as possible with plant protein. Have been studying the diets of people with the longest lifespans in the world. Lot of healthy fats, low animal protein, lots of complex carbs and plant protein. Low cancer and heart disease rates. If you're looking for some new and exciting protein options...check this list out...has recipes, too:) https://theecoguide.org/vegetarian-proteins?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjMm5i6yR2AIVXbbACh3zhwDbEAAYAiAAEgLMSfD_BwE

    What can possibly go wrong?

You don’t have to get all your Protein from meats. There are lots of people who are vegetarians and they get these surgeries done. It just means you have to work harder to get your protein in other ways. I can’t stand meat alone. Make a curry or stew version and cut the meat in to the sauce in shreds. Add lots of vegetables and other stuff to your meal. The first six months after surgery I used to eat lean meat and I pretty much hated life by the end.

    Surgery date coming 12/28

Maybe I will get one, but i'm vegetarian so I really don't have to worry about the meat problem! Do you know how expensive they are?
  18. You will find that it is very hard to get enough protein as a vegan. I'm sure it can be done, but it is much easier as a vegetarian as you might know. I was a vegetarian for 3 years, and found it easy to get my protein in, but I ate 5-7 cups of food per sitting then. I think I could do it now on a cup of food as long as I supplement with eggs, mock meats, and protein shakes. I will make it back there soon enough. I loved the benefits of being a vegetarian. I recovered super fast from workouts, and my nagging shoulder injury healed within a few months of switching over. There are many threads here devoted to vegetarians/vegans. Do a search.
  19. Find the Proteinoholics thread on this site. Lots of vegetarians and vegans!
  20. i would argue that any time is a bad time to go vegan. read "The Vegetarian Myth" by former vegan Lierre Keith for a good primer on this fraudulent philosophy.
  21. Hey! I’m currently 2 and a half months Post-op and I’m a vegetarian. My nutritionist says it’s a bad time to become vegan because I need the “protein” from meat. I’m 67lbs down from my highest weight and 47lbs down from my surgery weight. What are your opinions ? Any WLS vegetarians/ vegans?
  22. Is anyone else a vegetarian going through this experience? I was sleeved about 5 weeks ago. I’m so nauseous and light headed all the time. I’m finding it impossible to reach 60 grams of protein a day. It’s like a choice between being dehydrated and eating or being hydrated and not eating.. I tried eating meat and it just disgusted me and made me feel worse. I just can’t go there, so I settled with some canned tuna and even that i found really difficult as i don’t like eating animal flesh whether they be land or sea. I’ve been doing 2 scoops of protein powder a day and recently stopped that as per docs instructions to try and get solids in. Anyone else in the same boat and/or managing to get their protein in?

    Gum and Beans

Since Mr. F. is not a beany kinda fella, I no longer cook them for myself. For now, I can have a spoon or two at a time, but any more than that and my blood sugar spikes. So I'm waiting for surgery so I can enjoy them again. Here's my favorite black bean recipe! 1. Buy a can of black beans--any brand without added sugar. 2. Open can. 3. Pour contents into small saucepan. 4. Add 1 bayleaf, granulated garlic, dehydrated onion, cumin, ground coriander (optional), black pepper, kosher salt to taste. 5. Add a couple of spoons of salsa. I like the HEB Hatch Salsa-Hot (red or green) 6. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. 7. Add 1tbsp butter and let it melt. (It reduces the amount of "canned" taste.) 8. (Optional: Eat vegetarian or add 2oz of any kind of leftover meat. Pork of any kind, including sausage crumbles, rocks. Bacon--the bomb.) 9. Stir. Serve. It's a lot of steps. And I realize it sounds complicated, but you should totally give it a try!

    My tummy loves unhealthy food!

It's not necessarily that your tummy loves unhealthy foods (good news!), but stuff like cookies are what people refer to as slider foods (not so good news haha). Slider foods are are soft simple processed carbohydrates of little or no nutritional value that slide right through the surgical stomach pouch without providing nutrition or satiation. When slider foods are consumed, they go into the stomach pouch and exit directly into the jejunum where the simple carbohydrate slurry is quickly absorbed and stored by the body. There is little thermic effect in the digestion of simple carbohydrates like there is in the digestion of protein so little metabolic energy is expended. The most commonly consumed slider foods include pretzels, crackers (saltines, graham, Ritz, etc.) filled cracker snacks such as Ritz Bits, popcorn, cheese snacks (Cheetos) or cheese crackers, tortilla chips with salsa, potato chips, sugar-free cookies, cakes, and candy. Definitely keep talking with your doc and nutritionist if you continue having issues with solid foods. Maybe try some vegetarian options that are higher in protein, like chili with beans but no meat. Good luck and keep us posted!
  25. Anyone attempting the vegetarian / vegan lifestyle after WLS? I was a vegetarian prior but started eating poultry to meet my NUT planned diet (high protein low carb low fat )

But now I am longing to  return to the life style.

    Any tips?

Vegetarian isn't too hard since you can have whey protein shakes, eggs, dairy. Veganism is much harder since the vegan-friendly shakes are less palatable and you have to be extra cautious about getting complete proteins.
