December 2018 Sleevers!
Louise is gonna Lose replied to batty_vsg's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, that scale is evil for sure. I do take my measurements and have lost a lot in some areas and not so much in others. 4 pants sizes is incredible. Good for you. Are you buying new clothes yet? I haven't bought anything new because I have a whole closet full from the last time I was this size. I follow the Keto diet which was recommended from my surgeon but modified with more protein. I do have some good recipes for that. But mind you Keto is high in fat so if you are doing a low fat diet it would probably not be for you. -
i do low carb 50g or less daily but i don't do keto because the protein level is to restrictive for my taste. if you can meet your marco's and get your micro nutrients from those levels i don't see a problem. surgeons don't like anything that is not down the middle good for all cause they don't have time for one on one care so all the programs are designed to fit the avg. and cause the least problems. track carefully and get regular blood panels and be prepared to stop if any issues come up in your blood work. good luck and enjoy

Anyone's primary doctor was against the operation?
Kia kaha replied to Starky's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first GP I talked to was against surgery, she said that it didn’t address the psychological issues of overeating and if I eat emotionally it would be extremely hard for me to cope with my emotions afterwards. She recommended a ‘health coach’ and keto. Roll forward a year, couldn’t find a qualified health coach, lost weight with keto and realised that it’s not sustainable. I have at this point nearly put back all the weight I lost last year. Spoke to another GP who I know is diabetic himself, he said absolutely , surgery is the only way to lose weight permanently, he gave me a referral. As a postscript I saw GP. Number one in the car park, she is a lovely human, but you couldn’t fail to notice that her own bmi had shot up over the last year, maybe she shouldn’t heed her own best advice. -
Out With the Old--In With the New!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
LOVE this! So what did you say when the guy said that in the full room? Were you embarrassed or did you own it? Oh, I "get" anonymity! Ok, we'll let you slide on pics of the body parts ROFLMAO! My sissies and niece who are super supportive keep calling me skinny minny and the incredible shrinking woman. They tell me how proud they are of me. But no one else has commented until yesterday. My PCP came in and apologized for entering the wrong room. He said he didn't recognize me until he looked down at my chart. LOL. That felt good! So I'm loosely letting my whole carbs fall somewhere between 30 and 40g right now. They net out to anywhere from about 20g net to 30g net. I'm not averse to pushing them up to 60g per day total carbs. I don't want to add a lot of sugar into my life even in the form of naturally occurring ones because I feel better without them. I'm definitely still in ketosis. My sugars are generally falling less than 15g total for the day. I don't know the study. Will have to look it up. But my question would be whether the study is a good one. Are they using newly ketogenic peeps? Or are they using people who've been keto adapted for a long time? It can take up to 3-6months of continual keto to become completely keto adapted. And the brain chemistry and body chemistry of those folks is completely different than in other folks specifically because the amounts and types of different ketones circulating. Brains actually run preferentially and "better" on ketones rather than glucose as fuel--or so MANY studies support. A brain is either going to be a sugar burner or a fat burner. If it's a sugar burner, it has the BARE minimum need of about 60g of carbs per day baseline. If it's a completely adapted fat burner, it has theoretically, unlimited supply of the specific ketones it needs to run very precisely. Any sugars needed to maintain the body are adequately provided for by gluconeogenesis that comes from dietary protein (in the presence of adequate protein intake) or in breaking down muscle in the absense of adequate dietary protein. A ketogenic diet is actually a muscle-sparing diet. But, I do believe that we as post ops are suffering silent lows, or even lower than our usual bgs due to small volume of food and small amounts of carbs in general. I am terribly flash irritable. Not grumpy all day. But little things make me flash. That has gotten better this week--extremely so--since I upped my calories to between 700-800. So that's why I'm thinking it's low bgs. My lowest readings have historically been in the late afternoon. And that is when I have the greatest propensity towards hanger. Otherwise, I'm pretty mellow really. -

@Lolo2020 Sounds like you're doing great!!! Only five pounds from goals is pretty awesome!!! That's pretty much there if you ask me. For weight, I set my goal at 174 so that I would be under 25 BMI. When I set that goal, I figured that's the weight I would need to be to wear a size 32 pants and to have a body fat% under 15 (which were my real goals). I already hit those goals so I am not sure my goal weight is realistic at this point, but we'll see. I am about 11-13 pounds away from my goal weight (depending on the day). I still may be losing weight but it' snot like it's a steady stream of weight loss every day. It just seems that my heavier days are less heavy and my lighter days are a little lighter and it's just trending down a little bit at a time (maybe a half pound a week for the past few weeks). I'll take it. @coexister If you're struggling with carbs, maybe you need to reevaluate whether they should be in your diet and, if so, what kind of carbs should be in your diet. I think the best approach to food is to plan out your menu in advance (the night before or something like that). If you have a plan of what you are going to eat and how much of it (you need to weight things out so you know what you're consuming), then you're more likely to stick to the program and not go off the plan. You can't blame "saboteurs" for screwing up your diet. Ultimately, you're responsible for what you put in your mouth. I have got an 8 year old and a 3 year old, so we have plenty of cookies and bad things in the house that I can't eat. For me, it may as well be like I am deathly allergic to that stuff--like a peanut allergy type thing. Eating that crap isn't an option for me anymore. Instead, I a make sure my diet has enough volume foods like lettuce, spinach etc. along with nutrient dense foods to make sure that I am getting the nutrients I need and I still feel satisfied (which I really do). I can live on a keto style diet forever--although I have added more carbs because I need more fiber (but the net carbs are now kept under 40 a day--I was at 20 or less for the first three months that I was on solid food). As for exercise, you just do the best you can. If all you can do is walk, walk as much as you can and make part of your routine each day. Once you have a routine that blocks out 1-2 hours a day for exercise (walking in your case), then you can add other types of exercise once you're healthy enough. The scheduling change will make that possible so you're still used to a healthy routine. This is the time to fine tune your lifestyle while you're still getting the full benefit of your sleeve.

With my nutritionist's approval - I've started my breakfast and lunch with Keto Chow protein powder. So I'm slowly getting used to more liquid and less food. It's beginning to affect the food portions when I eat dinner, so I think that is a great plus!. I'm adding Orgain college peptides wot my water to make sure I'm getting enough protein prior to surgery as well. I'm down 14 pounds towards my 20lb goal before the surgery. So far so good

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
Megan Sadler replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Whole 30 is a 30 day elimination diet—it gets rid of all 7 allergen foods, and sugar and a few other things that may be inflammatory. After 30 days you reintroduce Foods. It forces you to eat really healthy. Paleo has no dairy, or grains or processed sugars and such. Go look them up on Pinterest. They’re super good for you—according to my nutritionist and doctors. Don’t go Keto though research is now showing that it’s killing people. As for avocados I didn’t realize that it had that much im not sure. I was thinking about eating the teeny tiny avocados from Trader Joe’s -
Binging before surgery
OutsideMatchInside replied to Melbournegirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did not have to lose weight for surgery. I knew I was going to have a long liquid diet. I had all the food funerals I wanted. I am really glad that I did, because now when I have a craving, I can say to myself, " you had plenty of that", and remember when I did. It has made things a lot easier post-op. Especially when the time since I had anything to chew on seemed further away I don't know how people for 6 months of dieting, then a liquid diet, then post-op. One thing that I know now that I was sure about before surgery is that I can eat, fairly normally (for me I was already a lowcarb/keto person, I just fell off the wagon a lot), just in small portions. I do not feel deprived at all. Those food funerals were not really needed but I am still really glad I had them, because they helped me get through some dark days. -
Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
JessLess replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I liked your post because I like carbs. But eating too many carbs, "bad" carbs, calories, sugar, fried food, ethnic food, etc. got me to the point where I hopped under the knife Monday. I think the research and trends on diets go in cycles and obviously different things work for different people. Weight loss research is particularly hard to parse because entities like food and drug companies fund a lot of the research. In the 80s many dieters were on low fat diets. Fat was a dirty word and we ate carbs, did aerobics, and some lost weight. Now some of my friends are doing keto and some are doing high protein. I've been told there may still be small amounts of tortellini in my healthy future. And I'm happy about that. -
I’m struggling to but I’m like forget it lol. I would prefer a list of what to eat but they said start adding things. I scan everything I buy to make sure it’s ok. The pork rinds are great for that chip craving but I only eat like 4. Great protein. For me I’m just trying things out and seeing if they work. Still pretty bland but I have had shrimp and ground beef tacos on those keto street tacos. This week flavored drinks are giving me problems so only water right now doesn’t make my stomach gurgling. It’s all new but we getting there.

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
Solo4ever replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
that stall is totally normal. it actually will happen pretty frequently. sometimes its just a week...sometimes 2 weeks. sometimes its just 3 or 4 days...im 8 weeks out and I lose about half a pound a day..but it can stall for 3 or 4 days and then all the sudden 3 pounds overnight. lol remember our bodies are living breathing organism and needs time to ensure we can survive on what we give it...its our bodies job to keep us alive! so be thankful your body cares enough to stop and look at this trauma we did to it and it proceeds with caution somwtimes! one thing i did find after 6 weeks out was that if I take in too few calories for a day it will stall me for a couole days. i tend to be around 600 caloroes of mixed protein carbs and fat...i have days where I don't feel like eating and my caloroes drop to like 450...and that will stall me. if i immediately next day eat 600 to 700 ill drop a couole pounds. I also notice that my body does not like keto no carb. my weight loss was really unpredictable until I agreed to eat around 50g carbs a day and now my losses are more stable. So don't be afraid of carbs- good carbs! and play with the amounts to find what yiur body likes. just dont go extreme low calorie thinking that will make u lose weight because the opposite is true! -
Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
Shen replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am so happy to hear some of you guys have lost so much weight on the liquid diet, my dietitians said, I can have soup and protein shake, she also said, I can use Atkins or keto meal replacement. I am on keto shakes and soup. Jello and vitamin water. It’s working well. Good luck to everyone. -
As posted on another thread: Ok, so a preliminary google search HAS turned up several books that coorelate DS and stool/body odor. Also several Bariatric practices mention the same. So, I feel comfortable saying that malodor is a relatively common side effect of the DS. What to do about it.. there were several references to dietary control. Carbs can cause it (that's a new one on me! There must be a fine line between being in ketosis (keto breath!) and too many carbs...), as can too much fat intake. Other than controlling diet, there are internal deodorizers, such as chlorophyl and devrom, that can help remove the odors. RNY doesn't result in odor issues as often as DS, but it can happen. It's the malabsorption component that causes it.

I’m back to school as a teacher so PLENTY of stress haha, last week was our workshop week and I’m back with kids on Tuesday. And I’m taking an evening graduate class...maybe too much to take on right after surgery, oh well! Right now I’m trying to plan ahead and have meals prepped for the week so I don’t end up not eating for too long or eating something crappy...pinning a million Keto/high protein low carb/ WLS recipes on Pinterest right now and hoping to actually make some of them! -
Tripple yummy looking! I cant' wait!!! I don't know what's gotten into me but lately I've been watching all these youtube bariatric, whole30 and Keto cooking shows. Today I just bought a Instapot and a Air Fryer to get ready to eat again. I'm not craving anything, but just want to eat healthy from the start.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
BadWolf523 replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a cold this week so I never made it to the gym which kind of bums me out because I enjoy going. However, I stuck to my eating plan, which I decided would be keto, and I lost 7lbs. This came after a 3 week stall. I’ve noticed that some people noticed weight gain during their stall. I just sat at 251 for 3 weeks. I wonder what causes to see weight gain. -
I did keto before too but this is like extreme restriction, lol. I think it's just knowing that I can't eat that's the hard part. 2-6 pm is my tough time. The kids are home from school, they want a snack, then I have to get dinner ready. I'm gonna serve my family and then find something to do. Im hoping each day gets easier.

anywho on a more productive note. ive stopped working out. i was stalled at 150 for three weeks. stopped working out last week. kept eating keto and adding more fat and this week i've lost 2lbs so maybe my body just needed a break or needed more fat. all a process of trial and error so this has been the result. not going to work out till maybe next week.

I would love to know about the Keto garlic bread. Enjoy your meal! -
Went on a trip with a friend and I actually felt kind of skinny most of the time. I did put on a bathing suit but I never took off the shorts. I've taken about three weeks off from working out. now I have started eating the carbs to lift weights and gain muscle. It is very hard to eat carbs after being low carb/keto for the last nine months. I've only worked out one time since starting carbs SMH. Having a really hard time getting going again

I thought I was going to lose my mind if I couldn't chew food soon. Thank the heavens and the gods above for real food once again! My go-to favs are chicken salad, grits and eggs with butter, and I've replaced the morning cuppa joe with a warmed-up protein drink with real whipped cream. Following much more of a clean keto/low carb diet now. really focusing on my protein and water. Life is much happier now

@PaulaUSN Dr. Westman (low carb doctor at Duke Univ) recommends plenty of water, a cup of bouillon (I use Better Than Bouillon--so good!) and a teaspoon of MOM (for the magnesium) for the keto flu/headaches. You should google him! But you are on the downhill slide of it now!! Congrats! @Luisajfc The sleeplessness is a well-documented side effect of going super low in calories and carbs. You get pumped full of "feel good hormones" and almost a euphoria with tons of energy. It's temporary and is also kinda part of the keto flu. I drink lots of water, then take my calcium, vit d, and MOM before bed. It helps me relax!! Y'all are rockin' it!!
