Does anyone feel angrier or more 'indignant' post surgery?
Xena7158 replied to itstimealready's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Well, i`m not sure if this is the same thing or not ... but the last time I was on a weight loss journey (and ended up losing over 100 lbs), I remember feeling like that. But I know what it was from ... I started to see people (friends and relationships) for what they were, and it made me more cynical and angry. Men I had been friends with or known for years, now that I was thinner, were suddenly interested in more ... this annoyed me. Women I was friends with, trying to sabotage my weight loss successes - here, I made you some Cookies, you`re too thin, you should stop losing weight, oh you`re unhealthy, etc (when I still had 50 lbs to go ...) - this annoyed me. Then I noticed how much nicer people were, or how much more attentive people were to my new thinner self - this annoyed me. Basically, I attributed it to no longer being blind to the reality that "looks do matter" to some people - and it forced me to re-evaluate all my relationships and my own vanity issues. It doesn't help that while we lose, there's raging hormones being let loose, and head hunger, and other addictions vying for our attention in our brains! -
I'm four weeks out on Monday. This week, my lower belly has been acting up. Sometimes it just feels sore, and sometimes I have sharp pains. My bladder is hurting as well - I'm on antibiotics for a UTI but they haven't kicked it yet. I'm probably just being paranoid, but I only lost 0.8 this week. 30.4 total. Total loss is great I know, but why the stall? Anyone else have lower pains? It's NOT when I eat. food goes down fine and I go to the bathroom everyday. Sometimes Twice a day bit the amt is small sometimes (TMI). I'm hoping its just gas and surgery pains, but I'm a little worried because I'm almost a month out. Shouldn't all that be gone by now? I'm just anxious due to the stall on week 3, and I was in the hospital 6 days due to infected hematomas. I've had the worst luck and am just afraid I have a crazy blockage or something. Someone talk me off the ledge or send me to the ER.

I was banded August 17th. I have lost 24 pounds - which I know is great! 14 pounds was from my 10 day pre-op diet, and 10 pounds the week after surgery. I'm a little frustrated as the scale hasn't budged in the past 10 days.... I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do! I mean, I'm eating like 1/3 of what I used to eat! And much better choices! What gives? Is my metabolism slowing down with the decreased calories? My doctor says the first 6 weeks really aren't about losing weight, but....that's what will keep me going.... But I am proud and thrilled with my 24 pounds gone! Just a little worried....

14 CC Band vs Restriction
marfar7 replied to s.smith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my 14cc band placed Oct 1, 2009 - and I really didn't see any significant weight loss for the first 4 mths. It took until my 3rd fill (and my doc only does them every 6 wks and he's also 3 hrs away) and 8.5 cc to get any restriction at all. I had my 5th fill almost 6 wks ago, for a total of 9.5 cc in my band - and I think I'm finally at my sweet spot. I've only lost 50 lbs in the last 9 mths, but most of that has been since Feb, when I finally got some restriction. Good luck to you. And remember, each band is so personal, it doesn't matter how much I have in mine, what counts is how you feel. Marci -
I am a pretty hairy guy. I am wondering with the guys have had surgery. Does body hair seem to cover up the scars?

Halt on Weight Loss, Already????
BetsyB replied to lmsampson's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, smaller bodies do use fewer calories, so in that sense--yes, your metabolism is slowing. But that's something that occurs no matter how you lose weight, or how fast. (And it's not likely to be what's at play right now.) You say that you're making better choices. Does your doctor have a recommended eating plan? I ask, because some do have an, "Eat what you like--just less" approach, and IMO, having some general guidelines tends to produce better results, at least at the beginning. That said, what are you eating? In what quantities. It can be really useful to journal someplace like fitday.com; you can assess, then, whether your food choices are supportive of weight loss. You can also track your exercise---at this point, your body's ready for cardio, at the very least. (You need clearance from your surgeon before you do resistance or other workouts.) And you should be doing something daily, for optimal results. If you really are doing everything you can to support weight loss, take a deep breath, and relax. Our bodies really do sometimes just take breathers from loss. Mine does it every 25 pounds or so; it doesn't tend to persist for very long, but it is frustrating. That's where journaling comes in handy; I can assess whether I'm doing all I need to be doing, then just let go and wait it out. (Having a BodyBugg has helped me see how my caloric needs change with weight loss, too--this has been really useful for me. If you don't have a BodyBugg and/or aren't interested in one, that's fine---you just have to keep in mind that as you lose, your intake will have to go down. It's one of the cruelties of the universe! As we get smaller, we just need less to keep our bodies going.) -
WLS Worries: Sagging Skin
Bufflehead replied to gabrielle2014's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It sounds like you are on the right track in terms of preparing for and dealing with issues regarding the loss of food as a coping mechanism. Honestly, I think you are ahead of the game there. With respect to sagging skin - I have a ton of it, and I'm okay with it. The cold hard truth is that even with sagging skin, I'm a lot more attractive than I was when I was morbidly obese. More importantly, I'm a lot more healthy both physically and emotionally. I don't worry about fitting into airplane seats or restaurant booths. I don't feel like people are staring and judging wherever I go. For me, the emotional toll of being a morbidly obese person in our society was huge, and I am now free from that. I will take all the sagging skin in the world in exchange for my physical and emotional health. All of that said - you can really only see sagging skin if you are both naked (or very skimpily dressed) and standing upright. How often does someone see you like that? I don't like skimpy clothes anyway. The only people who see me naked are lovers and health care professionals, and if they can't deal with it, I don't need them in my life. I love my new body and am proud of it, sagging skin and all! -
Weight gain six weeks out...
tannak replied to Hopeful in Rochester's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am in the same boat! I am only four weeks out but the wait loss is very very slow so I am going to try and up my calories to at least 1000 a day and see if that helps my metabolism!! -
okay, so here's my issue. I have bcbs of al. Most of their policies will cover the lap-band. However, b/c my husband's company is so small they have an exclusion for all weight loss associated surgeries, treatment et. al. We are not really in a place to finance the surgery ourselves. i mean if it comes down to it, we can. But we'd rather not. So I have started looking for a new job that has insurance (my current does not) that i can take out on myself that will cover the lap-band. But in case that doesn't work... I was thinking of just buying my own policy privately. Has anyone took out their own insurance policy and done it that way. I started thinking about this and wanted to know if this has worked out for anyone.

Calling all who had surgery in MEXICO
Elisabethsew replied to roseyandmusic's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Do you have a lot of weight to lose? Are you a volume eater or a junk food eater or both? The sleeve is a restrictive weight loss surgery (as is the band). The bypass is a restrictive AND a malabsorptive procedure and requires some life long changes. Have you decided which is best for you? Once you decide, it will be easier to make a choice concerning what surgeon is best for you. -

Congratulations, froggy. Weight loss is wonderful, isn't it? I remember how excited I felt when I could fit into size 16s without the W! Over the years as I got fatter and fatter I had to give away clothes that I loved; now I am doing the same thing all over again but in reverse. My last big NSV was discovering that I can wear belts! Another thing to shop for. Oh goody!

There wasn't for me. The language in my policy was very clear, no treatment for weight loss, including WLS. No way around it no matter what my health was.

Sleeve Surgery stomach removal Q
jess9395 replied to Tanyatata's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some docs (mine) use 32 for a sleeve. New research shows smaller bougie does have higher complication risk (slight) and no higher long term weight loss. So that may have been when the change happened, when that research came out. But I'm not sure a 32 is truly "dangerous" just has a higher complication risk. -
Banded 10-16-2008
Carrin Parkes replied to cproctor501's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I made some chicken soup last night. I've had my band for near 3 years now. It just seems that in order for me to lose weight I have to be on liquids. Solids seem to slow my weight loss down to nothing. My problem is when I have a fill my stomach swells so much I'm basically on liquids only. I'd love to just have it loosened and do Weight Watchers or here in South Africa we have Weigh-Less. Has this method worked for anyone else out there? -
That depends on the terms of his United insurance policy. For example, the policy might not cover any kind of services until 3 months after enrollment. Call the United customer service line and ask about that, and while you're at it, ask about the policy's weight loss surgery coverage - what (if any) surgery does it cover, what do you have to do to qualify, etc.

My hair guy ordered Revita for me. It has helped a lot and regenerates the hair follicle. Are you getting enough protein? This can cause some of it but most all of us go through this. I was telling my hair guy about this possibly happening and he said he had been to a seminar about this shampoo and said it was very impressive. He has given it to some of his clients with hair pattern baldness and it did regrow hair for them. Your hair will grow back without this but it just helps it to regenerate a little quicker. I honestly only had 1 day where I had a hand full of hair and started the shampoo and it has been very minimal since. You can order it on amazon and it is a little pricey but it works. I ordered the conditioner with it. Hope this helps.

Does anyone know of or is using a weight loss app for iPhone?
-
sounds like a plan. if they give me any guff i'll just say show me the instruction (er, uh i mean, show me in writing :-) ) I dont do well at all with this wishy washy stuff and just want a clear cut/ black and white list. I know based on the current weight guidelines that I just by the hair of my chin qualify, and with the new rules coming soon I well fall into that too. I look forward to the appt with them to get it all submitted. By the way, does Tricare want all of the labs and such done before approval or just have it done before surgery?

Recently ive noticed my hair thinning and i can see a lot of my scalp! ahh i dont know what to do. does anyone have any recommendations or has this happened to anyone else?! what should i do!??!?!

It started with blood tests. Not sure what they saw but it lead to them eventually doing a liver biopsy. It was confirmed then. Your PCP would be the person who can help determine if this is an issue for you. But honestly since it is an asymptomatic disease I would instead ask the dr if he thinks the issue will go away with weight loss, if there is any chance you have this problem. Even though I was diagnosed with NASH many years ago I never had to do anything different or take any special meds. I knew that my weight did not help my liver, that's for sure. I am hopeful the problem will be eliminated once my BMI is where it should be.
