  1. Hello All, Reading this forum for a few months has taught me that everyone is a little different. But today, I am looking for some 'misery loves company' friends. If you are able, riddle me this. Why are there times you get so cold? I do not understand. As for context, I am a few weeks post surgery. Things are going well...just wondering who gave me a membership into this Polar Bear Club. I wasn't looking to join a club where members are forced to freeze nearly to death. Through my years, I have always been a warm person...temperature wise that is. To say it another way, I have always been a "scrub a little too hard and I can sweat in the shower" kind of person. But, as Bob Dylan once said, "The times, they are a changin." Let me explain. There are times when I am on the couch. I am dressed in warm clothes and thick, comfy socks. I am under at least two or three hefty blankets. There is a fire in the fireplace. A large labrador retriever that goes by the name of Bella is curled up beside me sharing her warmth. Yet, I still shiver to my bones. What the hell is going on here? As odd as this may sound, I have actually worn a winter hat inside of my own house because I cannot get warm. But a few hours will pass and, suddenly, I feel like I am back to normal. During these 'winter wonderlands,' my beautiful wife is wearing shorts, no socks and a flimsy t-shirt. As she lifts her hair in an attempt to cool herself, she proclaims the problem is with me. So I have a few questions for you. Perhaps you can help me. 1) Have you experienced this same issue? 2) Does it go away? If so, when? 3) Does anyone really know what causes it? 4) Why am I not cold all the time? Thanks for all of your sharing. Hopefully your wisdom will provide me with some new knowledge. I wish each of you the most wonderful, healthy and fulfilling days ahead. Best, AnotherGuy
  2. Congrats! You are almost at onederland. I was 241.5 surgery date. Didnโ€™t lose anything before surgery (Dec 17th) which was annoying since I wasnโ€™t eating and I was walking 10,000 steps a day minimum. 7 days out of surgery I was down to 228 (13.5 lb loss) and then stagnated at 228 for about the next 2 weeks. Pretty sure pms and my menstrual cycle prevented me from losing more weight. I stopped obsessing over the scale because I was feeling like I wasnโ€™t losing after the first initial loss so now I will only weigh in this coming Friday and every Friday thereafter, however I do feel the difference in my close. I canโ€™t wait to be out of the 200โ€™s. It hasnโ€™t even been 3 weeks out of surgery but I want to be โ€œskinnyโ€ already lol, but I also donโ€™t want the extra loose skin so I need to remind myself to be patient and be positive that I am on my way to a healthier life. Also I canโ€™t remember the last time I lost 13.5 lbs so fast so I need to see that as a win! You are on your way as well. Happy for you and that you are feeling better now and seeing results!

    Reading labels.

I am eating around 1000-1200 calories and aim for 80 grams of protein (I am 169 pounds so thatโ€™s almost right at 1 gram per 2 pounds coincidentally MiniGastricBypassDude) I do not know my lean body mass Vikingbeast but will have to look into that and see what that calculates out to and ask my team which numbers they want me to go by) I only drink one shake in the morning because itโ€™s convenient and I like the taste and the caffeine boost (caffe latte by premiere protein) and I usually have a Turkey and cheese lunchable for lunch or a P3 pack. My weight loss had been steady and my protein has been fine on the two labs so far so I think my calories and protein are fine for the phase I am in. I just want to better understand WHAT I am getting my calories from. Like I did not know, Arabesque, the recommended sugar amounts for women is 25 of added sugar. I donโ€™t know the recommendation for fat or carbs either. GradyCat, my team does not offer free visits but I wouldnโ€™t mind paying if I felt that I would get the answers I am looking for. I just did not feel like the lady they sent me to answered my questions. I assume she knows what she is talking about, she just makes it sooooo technical and talks over my head on this topic. I need to understand the basics first. SleeverSk, I have the Baritastic app and I used that for a while but I am a creature of habit and have the same handful of meals so for the most part I know the calories and that was all I was looking at. I may have to start using it again now that I am looking at that other stuff. I just need guidelines for me for each of those numbers. Not necessarily for weight loss cause I am losing without paying too much attention to them (just eating reasonably healthy foods) but to make sure I am not eating junk. What started all of this was a chat about cauliflower pasta when I realized that I do not really know for sure whether it is a good (at least better than the real deal) or a great option. There are some flours listed in the ingredients that I need to do some research on to see if they are nutritious or if itโ€™s just pasta disguised as cauliflower. But to start I just want to know for example how much fat is recommended for me per day and how many carbs. Like your peanut butter, Arabesque, that was something bad disguised as good I do not want to fall into those traps so I need to get educated about all this.
  4. 5โ€™2โ€ female. At the 6 month mark, I was at 97 lbs lost. But this includes ~12 lbs lost during my 2 week pre-op diet, so really it was more like 85 lbs lost in the first 6 months immediately after surgery. FYI, during weight loss phase i went with volume and calories measures way to monitor intake (cuz there is a huge diff between 1oz of steak and 1oz of salad or 1oz of almonds in terms of โ€œeat-abilityโ€ AND calories) With that said, at my 6 month mark, I was averaging about 700-ish calories a day, with each โ€œmealโ€ coming up to no more than 1 cup in volume (if I remember correctly). I use the term โ€œmealโ€ loosely as I was (and sorta still am) a grazer. But Iโ€™ve read enough on here to learn that my experience differs from many (and is similar to some). I have also learned that while everyone loses at their own pace and implements their own strategies, we all end up in the same place eventually so long as we stick with our plan and make adjustments as necessary. Good Luck! โค๏ธ P.S. I am 3+ years out now and have maintained below goal weight the entire time. I average about 1800 cals a day with moderate exercise. โ€ฆ. Though, full disclosure, I was 2lbs outside my โ€œhappy weight rangeโ€ a couple days ago, which has since been lost (a couple good poops did it, I think, lolโ€ฆthat and I cut down on the copious amounts of Xmas chocolates Iโ€™ve been porking on). This morning I was 119 lbs even, but I feel better when Iโ€™m closer to the lower end of my happy weight range so am gonna shoot for 115 and see if I can get back down there without too much discomfort, ha!โ€ฆ.we shall see.
  5. Thatโ€™s three pounds a week. Not sure if your stats but I agree that sounds like your doing fine. Especially if you had a low ish starting weight. I am almost nine months out and have only lost 51 pounds post surgery and my team is totally thrilled with my loss so far.

    Horrible side pain

For the last 3 days (5w post op)I have had this horrible side pain. itโ€™s about 1inch below my port incision. My DR canโ€™t see me for 3 more days but sometimes itโ€™s so horrible I canโ€™t pick up my arms to wash my hair or even walk. It feels like a stabbing, deep pain that sometimes will have me in tearsโ€ฆ anyone else?
  7. P.S. if you're expecting to drop like 30 lbs a month, you need to adjust your expectations. Almost no one loses that much that quickly unless they're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life". Unfortunately, I think shows like that give people unrealistic ideas and expectations about weight loss surgery. Us "normal" WLS patients, with very few exceptions, just don't lose that fast. After the first month, many of us settle into about a 10-lb a month (give or take) rate...and the further out you get, the slower the loss.
  8. This was also my experience this year! My weight loss actually ramped up between Thanksgiving and New Years - I lost 16 lbs in that time, when my previous two months were half that amount. It has been nuts. I tracked as much as I could (and I was averaging more calories than I had been previously, per my nutritionist's advice) but there were the inevitable days where I couldn't track because I wasn't the one preparing food. But, I tried to be somewhat smart about things and not go too off the rails. I enjoyed the holidays food wise, but I didn't come out of them with the usual guilt and regret. I'm enjoying the feeling.

Feb 2022 Surgery date, new here

Thank you for your encouragement. I can walk and do stairs, physically get around, but have intense muscle spasms, so that can limit my stamina - especially after I over do it - which happens a lot, especially around the holidays. I feel how gain negatively impacts me, so Iโ€™m hoping loss will offer some improvement. I do well in water and have both โ€œactiveโ€ and sedentary exercises I am working with โ€ฆ which I admit I was not great at keeping up with during the holidays. I try to modify my exercise during flair ups, so even on bad days Iโ€™m still doing something. Iโ€™m pretty good when I can keep things structured, but when my routine gets interrupted, I struggle. From June to Nov I did pretty well, so Iโ€™m hoping I can get back to that and loose at least what Iโ€™ve gained before my surgery date.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello Surgery friends! Just a quick update... I will be 2 months Post op on January 8th and I am down to 336. I weighed 375 the morning of surgery and 408 on October 24th. I am starting to feel like I haven't lost enough weight since surgery? Only 39 pounds in 2 months doesn't seem like a lot. I have stuck with our dieticians plan to a t just not seeing the weight loss I expected.
  12. sounds like a pretty normal weight loss to me...
  13. Iโ€™m going to jump right in & focus on your inner child sugar & snack craving & ask if you saw or still see a therapist? If not it may be worth asking your medical team for a recommendation to a one who specialises in supporting bariatric patients, disordered eating, etc. The battle to overpower those cravings will only be won when you deal with that inner child. At the moment that child is winning. Are you eating because you are truely hungry (because your body needs the calories to function) or is it just your inner child wanting to be satisfied & comforted? Honestly, I didnโ€™t specifically crave sugar or salt - I was an equal opportunity treat eater: sweet & savoury. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I got them out of my house. If I donโ€™t buy those foods & donโ€™t have them in my house, I canโ€™t eat them. I know it can be hard when itโ€™s in the work place but try to avoid the break area. Go outside to eat if possible. I also try to prep most of what I eat myself so I can control the ingredients & how itโ€™s cooked. While I was losing I ate pretty simply & a lot on repeat. It wasnโ€™t boring. I actually found it less pressure because I didnโ€™t have to think about what I was going to cook or eat. I had one snack a day: cheese, yoghurt (tub or drink), chunk of cucumber or fruit. Once you have those meals & food snacks in your app you can just select them each day. You donโ€™t have to recreate them every time. So a little hard work to begin. Go back to only eating three times a day & no snacks or only one a day. It wonโ€™t be easy. Snacks add the calories which will slow your weight loss a lot. If the child screams at you, sip water, have a cup of herbal or green tea, eat a little chicken, ham, or other deli meat, have some yoghurt, or a little piece of cheese as your snack - note they are all protein dominant. Watch the fruit because of the high sugar content (though natural) so be selective - berries are best. Try to avoid traditional style snacks even if theyโ€™re high protein, low fat or low sugar versions - they keep the snack habit & craving alive. Try to avoid artificial sweeteners for the same reason - they continue to feed your sugar craving. You can explore them when youโ€™re maintaining. You donโ€™t have to jump in with both feet & go cold turkey. Even making one change to what & how you eat at a time helps. Drop something this week. In a week or two swap something else out. Little changes are easy to accept & are little wins. Just some suggestions. Feel free to ignore them all. Congrats on your weight loss so far.
  14. As we progress we are all able to eat more & many find their appetite & hunger starts to come back at around 6-9 months. Itโ€™s when the next lot of hard work happens - when itโ€™s up to you to control & manage your eating as you canโ€™t rely on the diminishing benefits of the tool (your sleeve) anymore. At 6 months Iโ€™d reached goal & had lost 26kg (57lbs) post surgery so about the same as you. My surgeon was very happy with my rate of loss. I was eating almost 900 calories & almost a cup of food depending on what it was. I was slowly eating more but it did take another 10/11 months for me to be able to physically eat enough to stop losing. I eat about 1300 calories to maintain now & that includes 3 or 4 snacks. My serving size is a good cup or about the recommended serving size of most foods. To give you an idea I can eat 1.5 eggs, 3ozs steak, 2 lamb cutlets, a serve of rolled oats, 1/2 - 3/4 cup steamed vegetables, a tub of yoghurt. I take 30-60 mins to eat a meal. I should stress Iโ€™m not tall, have a small frame, am almost 57 & am not very active so hence my lower caloric intake. Congrats on your weight loss. Youโ€™re almost there. Whoo hoo!

    Skin

Excess skin is a given for most of us..the extent of it will depend on genetics, age, history of big weight loss/gains, time for skin to shrink to the most its going to, plus some other factors. Exercise, hydration and some good fat intake may help in a limited capacity, some people swear by certain lotions. If you are fairly young and have the right genetics you end up with minimal excess skin.

    Why Are Scales so Fickle?

LOL! I hear you @GradyCat. It takes 24 hours for my scales to recognise weight loss after breaking a couple of days of constipation. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ As @vikingbeast said, bathroom scales are not precision instruments. The Dept of Weights & Measures donโ€™t regularly check them. Stand on them differently, weigh on different surfaces, humidity, changes in temperature, etc. plus our own digestive & voiding cycles & variances, etc. have to be expected. Unless you eat & drink the exact same things in the exact same quantities at the exact same times, pee & poop the same volume, burn the same number of calories, etc. you canโ€™t expect your weight to be exactly the same every day or even at the same time. I weigh almost every day for my own accountability. I allow for what Iโ€™ve worked out is my fluctuation range. Itโ€™s only if I go above or below that range that I get cautious but even then I review what Iโ€™ve been eating, drinking, physically doing, peeing, pooping, etc. to see if itโ€™s something Iโ€™ve caused (food, fluids, activity), if itโ€™s just life (stress, health, physiological cycles, etc.) or my scales. Then I either ignore it or make the necessary adjustments.
  17. I came across your post and I was wondering how your weight loss is coming after having the ESGr? I am having it done in February and I want to have realistic expectations.

    Chickpea "Pasta"

This is good timing that I read this because I just saw the first mention of this two days ago in a YouTube video of some girl's weight loss journey where she talked about chickpea pasta and I hadn't heard of it before. I might give it a try at some point.

Bucket lists โ€” where to begin?

That's a good question. Hmmm. BUCKET LIST #1 - maybe write a book about WLS and/or weight loss and dieting in general. Although there are millions of them out there already. Or maybe a blog or Instagram page about it. Dunno. BUCKET LIST #2 - work with a personal trainer to define my arms into muscle and toned biceps. BUCKET LIST #3 - maybe buy a piece of gym equipment for at-home use to get extra workouts and activity throughout the day during "down" time.

    Do You loose weight slower

For you start weight I think you are doing pretty great. Some will of lost for the amount of time, others may have lost more, its very individual as we are all different. Set realistic goals and celebrate your weight loss so far.

That is an amazing loss, you are definitely doing something right! I am also not too focused on weight loss at the moment, or should I say I wasn't - going to get back into it, been giving away all the chocolate and alcohol I was given over Christmas and New Year (I'll admit I did sample some of them ๐Ÿ˜‰) I think I have had one piece of pizza since surgery, potato chips are my weakness but i always measure out a serving - like 14 chips and do not over do it. I'm not a sweet person, very savory and salty is my way to go. Happy New Year

I'm very sorry to hear about your flare up/episode. I hope you are doing better now!! Look after yourself, indulge every now and then and congratz on your weight loss so far!.

I've tried the adventure fit, I HATED the lifting your knees part - wonder if I'll be any better at it now?? I think I had it on easy too ๐Ÿ˜Ž That is an incredible loss, well done you. Food regrets.. not being able to eat as much as you want and then be in food coma the rest of the day - however I found a solution, I ate everything I would normally eat in the 1-2 days over the course of a week. Small bit of steak here, different type of potato salad everyday (my tummy doesn't like potatoes but it's my favourite food, so a mouthful every other hour mwahaha..) Happy New Year

That's amazing you haven't had any reactions to food, I'm so happy for you! I use to have a protien shake every morning for breakfast but 1. they are starting to make me nauseous (I think the smell not the taste) and 2. I can be lazy haha. Since it's summer where I live the last two weeks or so I have mostly been eating salad based meals. Not much protien which I know is naughty but I tell myself I get enough in all the cheese I eat ๐Ÿคฃ. I have quite a few foods that my body no longer tolerates. one is the curried eggs that we only ever get made for us on Christmas day! last year I ate a dozen easy over two days, this year I ate half of one and felt terrible afterwards! Booooo very sad no more eggs. Ah well Oh and congratz on the weight loss! Slow but steady and as long as your not gaining in my eyes is a win!!

    Do You loose weight slower

Nothing wrong with 35lb in two months regardless of the surgery date weight. What had you expected to lose by now? If your surgery date weight was on the lower side or you lost a lot of weight pre surgery you aren't immediately going to see big losses. It would help tailor responses if you filled in your profile data...weight, height etc.
