    Going in wrong direction-Help

Agreed. Protein shakes for me were poison. I ended up in the hospital really serious issues. We have to be careful not to tell people what to do. We should suggest what worked for us, and how it worked, why it worked. And what didn't work for us. Then our bariatric friends can try different suggestions on. Making statements With "you need to" Or "you have to" Or "you should" - should only apply to YOU SHOULD CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR.... I try to let people know that you CAN turn around every 10 years out, and that we can still use our surgeries to benefit us

    Going in wrong direction-Help

I am 10 years out. 64 years old. I went from 320 - 300 at surgery - to 165. I could never hold on to 165; but held on to 170 to 175 for about 5 years. Overweight, but had lost more than 70% my excess weight, and my doctors were VERY pleased; and so was I. A year ago I realized I was 220 pounds and freaked out. Decided to try to lose 10 pounds in a year. Nothing drastic. Once I started eating less, eating mindfully, intentionally, and using my VSG by eating protein first, increasing healthy fats, lowering carbs.... but keeping a daily treat.... changing HOW I ate, what I ate. I have lost an average of 3 pounds a month for the last 13 months. 41 pounds gone. I have some medical/physical challenges exercise is limited. No "working out" for me - but I swim during summer, do active gardening and dance in the living room when it is only the dog and I around. I only work on one pound at a time. I reset my personal goal at where I was comfortable.
  3. What happens if you test positive for covid 19, will that cause you to not get surgery? has anyone had this happen to them ( I am not currently positive) I just wanted to know given the current situation

5 years post op and have huge REGRET!

I can’t believe they waited so long and you haven’t been given the option of an RNY revision. Everything you’ve said sounds like be minus the extra surgeries and time. I’ve had GERD pretty bad for the last 5 months (Pepcid and protonix with tums) and a new hiatal hernia (had one repaired with my sleeve in December 2019) and my revision surgery is in 9 days. I definitely think you need a second opinion for sure! Sorry you’re in so much pain. I really hope you get answers soon!
  5. yes - it's the IV fluids. They pump you full of them when you're in the hospital. Among other electrolytes, there's sodium in those, which makes a lot of us hold on to water. I've heard of people coming out of the hospital up to 10 lbs heavier than when they went in. It'll work its way out of your system - but it could take a few days.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

I had surgery on 7/10/20. The first few days (maybe the entire first week) was horrible. I had so much pain and nausea, it was miserable to try to move and I definitely had second thoughts for a few days. I did force myself to walk several times a day once I was able to get the nausea under control. Three weeks later I’m 30 pounds lighter and I feel amazing. I still struggle getting my fluids in, and my pouch is having a hard time adjusting to puréed foods and softer foods. I just have absolutely no desire to eat food at all—there are no cravings and my stomach protests at the thought of trying to eat. I don’t think the process is the same for any two individuals. I do hope that the patches help you. Once the nause is gone life gets so much better!!

50 Days Post Op 50Lbs gone bye bye.

Whoop! Hope I can keep this pace going. I’m sure it’ll slow, my initial rolling seven day average was around 10-12 for the first couple weeks and it’s been hovering right around 4lbs a week since. Once I got past the low energy stage I feel like hyper-mode has been activated. No food issues. I’m capable of eating anything it seems nothing disagrees with me, just making good choices every day, and the restriction is still very high, an ounce or two depending on what it is. Ate some raw jalapeños even. I haven’t been this light since college (in the 90s). Doesn’t seem possible... wish I did this years ago.

    Going in wrong direction-Help

OK, I found my people. Good. I got sleeved 10/18 and reached my goal of 175. I am now in perimenopause. Such fun. Then I decided to try to get to 150. I got down to 161 and COVID hit. I never stopped tracking. I lost my job. So I was job searching, walking my doggos, doing Pilates for chronic back pain. Without the constant praise and reinforcement (and tight clothes) I wore to work, I started very slowly backsliding. I don't think wearing Pilates pants and sports bras every day helped. I got back up to 175 (14 lb. gain) and got pretty mad at myself. I am not going up a clothing size, I got rid of all my bigger clothes. Even though I was counting calories, I was just eating too many. I've been trying to remove snacks and higher calorie stuff. Now I've lost one whole pound. I did get a new job I really like so, I'm happy about that, but we won't be back in the office until Q4 or 2021. I just want help staying motivated. Thanks in advance!

Day 7 of fast - physical hunger sensations

I'm on Day 10 of the pre-op liquid diet, and I feel your pain! My only recommendation is to drink a shake whenever hunger pangs like that hit, even if it's right before bed. This is challenging enough... you shouldn't have to suffer unnecessarily!

    I’m 10 days post op
  12. 10 lbs is month is pretty normal. I started at 373. I lost 16 lbs the first month and about 10-12 lbs a month after that. At about six or seven months out, it dropped to 5-8 lbs. I did eventually lose it all, though, so don't despair. your calories are fine. I wouldn't increase.
  13. I appreciate you posting this. I am 10 days post vsg & feel the exact same thing! Please keep us updated!
  14. I told fewer than 10 close friends & family, and no co-workers. I didn’t even tell my teen who lives with me. She obviously knows I had surgery, but not the details. She sees my weight loss and notices I eat less, but none of it has “clicked” for her. I think it’s funny. One day when she is more mature I will tell her. I’ve been working from home since March, and one colleagues commented that my face looks slimmer on a video call. Explaining that I have more time to focus on nutrition, and fitness since I don’t commute 2-3 hours per day seems to satisfy any curiosity. I’ll save the comments specific to my surgery for the people whose opinions I value. I have to say, though... the people I have told have been supportive.
  15. Just wondering.... are there any foods that still ( or all of a sudden ) make you barf ? I ask because I am like 10 years out from a sleeve and the last two times I tried to eat some ( skinny pop ) popcorn..... it came right back up on me. I haven't had that happen in a long time. The first time, I thought, that I probably over ate popcorn; which had been a slider for me.... but then I decided to have some today .... like a month later.... and that did NOT work out well. So... I was wondering have any of you Vets had this experience with anything ?

    Food Before and After Photos

the first two years weren't that hard, to be honest. I just stuck to my plan and tried to exercise regularly. I wasn't a gym rat, but I'd do SOMETHING three or four days a week, even if it was just walking. I wouldn't say it didn't take effort, because it certainly did, but if I stayed committed and didn't stray very often, the weight would come off and stay off. Year three and beyond got a LOT harder. I gained 12 lbs (which actually I probably needed to - my lowest weight was too low for me), but then it became a constant battle to maintain my new weight. If I stop paying attention for more than a couple of days, my weight starts to go up again. I still weigh myself several times a week and track my food - and weigh/measure when I'm not 100% sure how much I'm eating of something. I also set "oh crap" weight levels for myself (which unfortunately I've adjusted up a bit the last couple of years), and when I hit that, it's all hands on deck to get my weight safely back down into an acceptable range again. That worked for a long time, but then I went to India for a month last fall. I didn't have a scale and I ate more than I would if I were at home, but I did NOT eat like a pig. I ate about what a normal person would. And I came back eight lbs heavier. It's been hell taking that off. I've lost 3-4 pounds of it (depending on the day). I used to roll my eyes at these "normies" who'd whine and complain about how hard it was to lose five or ten lbs, but now I totally get it. It is TOUGH. so my advice is 1) follow your plan until you get to your goal 2) once you're there, do whatever you can to avoid gaining weight. A 10-20 lb bounce back after hitting bottom is VERY common, so some of us try to get a little UNDER our goal to account for that. But once you're at what you want to be your final weight, do whatever you can to avoid gaining weight. People do lose regain, but it is TOUGH, especially if you're within a normal BMI range or within 10 or 20 lbs of it.

    Still Winded

    I’m 10 months out. I didn’t feel like myself until6 weeks.
  18. I had a sleeve done 10 years ago. I lost over 140 pounds. At the outset, I only told my closest friends and family. Maybe 8 people - my dad, and brother knew ( but both have passed away since then ). My then 17 year old daughter and her best friend who was HER support person, and 3 friends. I was in my mid 50's - I am now 64 years old. I regained 40 pounds in 9 years. Spent the last year losing those 40 pounds. Who knows now ? My daughter and her best friend, and 3 friends. It does not come up in conversation - people who knew me when I as over 300 pounds assume that it was my divorce - which did coincide with about when I had WLS. I am not skinny by any means, I am now considered overweight by my age adjusted BMI - but I am comfortable in my own loose skin. People who knew me when I was morbidly obese and meet me again now, ask me WHAT HAPPENED ? I tell them the truth " I lost weight". I also do not tell them that I had a hysterectomy and any other medical issues that I have had in 10 years either. Eating less, eating mindfully, and intentionally - along with my sleeve that still does work, if I let it.... is what helped me to lose weight again 10 years later.

Have lost way too much weight

I got really thin during year 2 and then gained 12 lbs in year three without really trying (a 10-20 lb regain during year 3 seems to happen to A LOT of us). So like BigSue said, I guess I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you have other issues going on. You can always gain weight by adding more calories, but that's likely to end up happening in another few months regardless. It's not inevitable, but it's very common.

Gastric Bypass Peeps: Would you do it again?

I just wandered on to this site. I had my bypass 19 years ago. It is probably a bit different now. Iknow people who had a lap band and have gained back their weight. The bypass is harder to defeat but you can do it. I would dump if I ate chocolate or candy and with alcohol. I just kept eating chocolate and now I thrive om it. At first, I could not hold any liquor then it was clear and no it is anything at all. I don't dump anymore. But I don't enjoy ice cream and I used to live on it. But I eat cake and other sweets. I am a big baker. I was about 250 when I started out. Lost 80 and gained back 10. Not great given what I endured but I had a stricture and the fix for that enabled me to eat a lot more. Now I eat like I always did. So at 180 I was much better. No more reflux, which I had bad and I could walk without losing my breath. In time I managed to get to about 150 and stayed there. Even got to 145. Then something happened in my life to motivate me. Six months on WW with working out every day and I was religious about it. I got sown to 112 and stabilized at 114 - 115. It was not easy, but when you really want to do something, you will. That was over 3 years ago. I crept uo to 119 or so and got back to 116. I say am trying to get back to 114 but I have only done this half heartedly. If I really wanted it, I would. But I eat a lot of pizza and pasta and candy and nuts and I drink and have wine on occasion. The bypass is the best thing I have ever done for my health. I should have done it earlier. It totally changed my life. Losing the extra weight was all me. I had to work for it. Now I wear a size 6 or even 4. Lots of loose skin, because of my age, but I look great and I am very happy. I hope this is useful to you.. I am 70 years old.

    Gastric Band Revision To Sleeve

Hi, You will be fine! I, too, was a bandster for 10 years and converted to sleeve 2 months ago. The best word to describe my feeling is RELIEF! the band started out great but then it was too tight, too loose, too finicky from one bite to the next. I have lost 35 pounds and Eat the things that I like. I did away with complex carbs with the band so I haven't (and don't plan on) picked them back up. Best thing, I can eat fruits (All kinds) without throwing up.. You won't regret it. Best,

    Weight gain.....

Due to COVID 19 I am as courteous and supportive to others as I can possibly muster because this time is hard as f**k. I don't know what you are going through, and I don't want to get into a contest about who has it worse, because there is always someone out there that has it worse than me - everybody loses in those contests 😞 So whether you are gaining or losing please accept this virtual hug - you are more than your weight, you matter, and you are loved.

    Weight gain.....

At the end of the day, there are myriad reasons why people may have gained weight over the course of the past 4-5 months. We do not know and cannot know the paths that they walk and the obstacles that they face. COVID-19 is a catastrophic event that has had a huge impact across the world and has upended the lives of EVERYONE. The stresses involved with such a massive disruption to how many people live their lives will have many effects, both visible and invisible. I find absolutely no fault whatsoever with anyone who has gained weight in the midst of the global crisis. Food is a comfort and is (regrettably, in some ways) an easy way to find a moment of peace and solace in the face of so much uncertainty. That some people need to use it to improve their mental and emotional well being is neither surprising, nor shameful.
