  1. I am a Band to Bypass revision. My Surgeon advised against Band to Sleeve due to the increased potential for staple line issues due to the scaring caused by the band. There were others surgeons in her office that would do it, but she won't do them. I trusted her inputs and went with the bypass. And yes, logically you will lose weight at a slower pace, simply because you are already used to the restriction. Now, that's not to say it's not going to be amazing or "slow" by any means. But you have the potential to not lose as quickly. Going from no restriction and no malabsorption to both is clearly going to be more of an impact than going from some restriction and just adding malabsorption. But, either way, it's still worth it. My band was not causing issues, but it took them WAY longer to get it out than it should have because it was totally encapsulated in scar tissue. Now, revision to sleeve, you are not going to get any of the malabsorption, just a different type of restriction. From what I read when I was researching Band to Sleeve, it can be rather slow. Whatever you chose, Good Luck!

    Complications following surgery

Hey JoeGo2014! Thank God that you're still with us, man! When I clicked on your posting, I certainly was not expecting to hear about the unbelievable and unfortunate situation that you found yourself in when you awoke from your procedure/surgery! I'm not big on replying here, and I'm a newbie myself (sleeve gastrectomy June 29, 2015). I just wanted to reach out to you to say "Hang in there, man!" It sounds like you've held on and turned the corner and are finally able to start the road to recovery and better health. I've lost a little over 40 lbs. since the day of my surgery, and thankfully I have not had any of the difficulty that you've been made to endure. The good thing is that you made it through, and although the journey will be more difficult for you, you've got friends out here that are going to help you through anything that you feel you need help with. For me, I mostly just need the daily reminders that there are people out there having great success with this process, and folks who have had it a LOT tougher than I do. I just thank God that I made the decision to do this, and found this forum. I'm looking forward to hearing your progress updates, as I'm happy to share mine with you as well. I'm 49, 5'6", and my starting weight was just under 400 lbs. I passed the 300 lb. milestone last Tuesday morning (YESSSS!!!), and feel pretty good. Feel free to contact me if you wish. Good luck, and take care. We're all pulling for you, JoeGo2014! Regards, Steve

Pre-Op Fast & The Surgery Countdown

Are you absolutely sure you are limited to 20g of protein? I'm kind of new to this but is it possible that is a minimum and not a maximum? I have never heard of or seen that and I am all over these boards...If it is correct, good luck and I hope its only for a couple of days...my doc says get 60 to 80g from preop all the way thru all of your weight loss and then when you are at a happy plateau you can go down to 40 to 60...he says and I ve read this all over this site that lower than 40 and your hair falls out and you are nutritionally deficient! 5. Hello my name is Rebecca and I am 28 years old. I have struggled with my weight since 6Th grade. It was so bad that in gym class everyone wanted me to be on there team when it involved the roller chairs, because nobody could lift me off my scooter :tt1: I have been married since 2001 and my husband is wonderful :tt1:. He supports me in whatever I want to do including Lap Band. We have 2 wonderful daughters, a 6 yr old and a 2 yr old. :tt1: I have a free seminar on Nov 19 to see if I qualify. I am 5 ft 5 and 255 lbs :smile2: (I sure hope I do) Is there anyone else out there that is in my situation?

    Hello

Hello everyone! My name is Nicole and I'm new to this forum. I am scheduled for my sleeve Sept.12 with Dr. Fernandez in Tampa (that's if I get insurance approval). I met with the nutritionist and psych yesterday so that part is over. Anyhoo, I hope to gain additional support here and meet others that are going through with the sleeve.
  7. Hi everyone. I was banded on 2.15.08, and since then I've lost 26lbs (yippie)!! In the last 10 days I have not lost anything and am now feeling like a looser - and getting discouraged. For some reason, when I loose weight every week, I feel so good about myself, and it really helps me keep going, doing what I"m supposed to be doing and eating ALL the right things and not eating much. I'm slipping a little and need some support. I've had one fill - 1.6cc's. I noticed about 4 days into it that I was having a hard time drinking liquids, so I had .6cc's removed. I felt great. I was able to eat my small meals, drink lots of Water, etc. I never really felt 'full' when I was done with my small meal, but I was no longer hungry, so I was following that cue. Now I'm having a harder time following that cue, so I think it might be time for a little bit of a fill....just a guess. Since my fill/unfill I've lost 11lbs. My fill was on March 31st. The unfill was about 5 days later. But for the last 10 days I've stayed the same. Do you think I need a fill? I could use some words of encouragement, and some inspiration. I'm not making great choices the last week, and I know I should be. I never expected to get so down on myself when I didn't see the scale going down every week. While I still can't eat as much as I used to, I am eating a bit more and not making great choices. Thanks for reading and anything you can contribute - personal experiences, words of wisdom, support, inspiration, etc. Much Peace and Good Luck to Us All! Maggie

    weight gain

It could be something more serious if you're gaining weight without a diet change. Perhaps a serious medical, hormonal or prescription issue? You said you moved too, maybe stress/depression; it plays a HUGE roll on weight gain/loss. Definitely be persistent in getting in touch with your doctors. I'm sorry they've been so difficult to deal with. Try to do an elimination diet, maybe the shakes aren't taking well to your body now after some time. I know when something works for me (even in a positive way) I find my body builds a tolerance for it and it never works the same way! I'm unsure if you can have two procedures entirely different from one another, but I'm sure it is possible. I can't imagine it being terribly healthy or wise though, I'm sure your surgeon would have a better understanding of your body.
  11. Hello, My name is Jennifer and I am just starting on this journey. I am 46 years old and have been battling my weight for years. I have done many different diets and can lose some of the weight but I always end up gaining it back. I now have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and joint pain. So after doing a lot of research and soul searching, I decided that having the sleeve done was the best choice for me. I had my first doctor visit on Monday. I qualify for the surgery because of my co-morbidities. I will end up paying about $2000 out of pocket. I have a few hoops to jump through first...six months of medically supervised weight loss, a psych evaluation, and a nutritionist visit. Hopefully I will get to have my surgery in September. I look forward to getting to know people here.
  12. Okay, had surgery on 5/17. I think I'm doing well? So far I've only been able to take in 20oz total. Today I started early and so far I've taken in 15.5oz. 7 of that includes Unjury Chicken Soup and i feel satisfied - not deprived or overfull. Including my Pre op weight loss, I've lost 15lbs. I'm super excited about my new life!!
  13. Jenny, they submit your initial weight to the insurance during the approval phase. The pre surgery weight loss is for your benefit during surgery. If you are on the liquid diet, your organs shrink a bit, making it easier to perform the surgery. Also, insurance required 6 month diet is to weed out the people that won't follow the program. I have not met anyone that lost their approval due to weight loss during the required phase. (But you could ask your insurance to verify.) Good luck and no worries
  14. My ins. requires a 6-month supervised diet. What if during that diet I go below the 40 bmi? Will the insurance say then, "Oh you're not fat enough anymore. We won't pay."?
  15. Really? You are already afraid you are not losing enough weight? 20 lbs in a lot. I hope you are not setting yourself for failure. Remember that we all lose at a different rate. Some of us lose lots of weight right off the bat, others lose very slowly. One member on here, Coops, is slow but steady. She is an inspiration because she follows the sleeve diet guidelines and keeps going, happy in each pound she sheds. Already your sleeve has produced amazing results. Give your body a chance to heal. It is enduring a partial organ loss, dramatically different calories and a drop in energy level. Body is recoverying. Stick to your VSG diet provided by your surgeon, try to keep carbs to no more than 30-40 a day. Hydrate well. The weight is already falling off. Glass can be half empty or half full. Your choice.
  16. ((((Hugs)))) I feel for you-- your post was very interesting to me too b/c I am almost 39 years old with 40 right around the corner. I think your surgeon is being super-responsible and maybe you want to follow his/ her advice. Give conservative measures one more try... you are very young and maybe you can lose the weight and keep it off with good medical supervision. Remember: the lap band isn't an easy answer-- it is just a tool. As a counterpoint, my story is this: Like I said, I'm almost 39 and weighed 193.6 in the surgeon's office at 5'4 when I went in to see her (Dr. Ren in NYC.) Though I have to go the self-pay route b/c I have no health conditions, the doc immediately indicated me for the surgery. I believe the reason she did so was primarily b/c of my extensive weight loss attempt history (been trying my whole life and have lost and gained repeatedly) and probably b/c of my no-nonsense attitude and approach. I happen to be a health professional and she didn't mince words with me. I asked: Is there any chance I can do this myself-- and she said, looks very unlikely... IF YOU WERE in your TWENTIES, I'd think differently-- but you've been trying for years without success. See? What I am trying to say is that you may have an opportunity to get medical help to lose weight and not have to have surgery. The upside is that if you DON'T do well with medical intervention, you'll already be under the care of a bariatric surgeon and can take the next step within the next year or so. I hope this helps and makes sense...
  17. Chrissy....I'd be pretty darned confused too! So don't feel bad. Only you know the answers to these questions....so ask yourself. 1. Have you made a concerted effort to lose weight in the past? 2. Have you been successful only to regain weight? Now, if you're like me, you've tried to lose weight more than once, probably starting at a young age. I would suggest going to see a different surgeon entirely. Go to the free seminar and talk to the doc and/or staff and decide what YOU really want to do. Good luck with whatever route you choose.
  18. I'm sorry your confused! I would be too. I'm 20 years old 5'5" and 247 pounds. Luckily my doctor didn’t tell me to wait. I personally have been on every diet known to man I was probably the only 5th grader to be on weight watchers . For me I know I’ve tried everything including starving myself to lose weight. Maybe it be best if you see another surgeon and see what their opinion might be. If you really feel that you should continue to diet do it :tongue2: maybe it will work this time, and it never hurts to try again before making a big decision. I’ve been thinking about this since I was 15 so I know this is something I want to do. Good luck with your decision if you ever need to talk I’m here.

    Feeling discouraged...

Patience is a virture- Be Virturous!!! If that doesn't work go get a banna split - LOL LOL All kidding aside you need to stay vigilante through this process. It is sometimes(like mine was) a very long & tuff road. But the good news there will be a "pot of skinny" on the other end. Be good to your self during the process & try not to have to many "last suppers" I ended up gaining over 10 pds while getting my date. It took me nearly 7 mnths. In the end I ended up being self pay anyway. I wish you luck & stamina!!!

    Hormone Levels Checked?

First thing they did was up my testosterone! What? I didn't want that but it immediately made me feel really feminine if you get what I mean Really helped with weight loss
  22. So, it's been awhile since I've been on here. Looks like I'm the same weight I was as the last time. I said at the beginning of December that I wanted to lose 10lbs by my birthday in the beginning of March. Well, I lost 2lbs, but have been then up and down between the (lowest was 138.6) and what I was when I decided to challenge myself (142). Argghh!! It is so difficult. I'm so close, but it feels like I'm still far away from my official goal of 115. I mean right now I'm only 25lbs to go. If I can reach my next mini goal by my birthday, I'll only be 17lbs away. I've got to stick with it, because it is so worth it. My NSV moment came when I bought a size 8 skirt (granted it's elastic waist & I think whoever owned it before me (it's from my favorite thrift store) must have stretched it out)!!!!!!! I've also gotten a couple other medium sized things. That's so exciting!! And even more people are noticing that I've lost weight. I hear the words "thin" and "skinny" and I'm like "You can't be talking about me." But, sometimes I see it too. I'm astounded by the fact that I've actually thought seen my myself and thought "skinny". Now I just need to catch myself a guy. So, if you're reading this and struggling with your weight loss, I just want you to hang in there. Lord knows it is tough, but it is so worth it. It's taking me a really long time, but I'm still so glad I made the decision to get the band.

    peanut butter?

I put it in my shakes in the blender in the beginning. It really improved the flavor!! I eat it often now on a spoon especially if my weight loss slows down because I'm not consuming enough calories.
  24. I was laying in bed today, (it's my day off) I was reading some posts and came across one that motivated me enough to get me out of bed at 7 and go do a 40 min workout. I was going to do the workout anyways but I was putting it off until later. Today is my double workout day...God help me. I've decided that I need to change things up for myself. I have already gotten in my 3 days of workouts that I require myself to do and still have 3 days left. I do believe I'll get in 5 days atleast this week. It's been a long time since I've done 5 days straight. I love to workout, I just let my life get in the way. Well not anymore. I know that if I want to reach my goal weight by my 41st birthday in July I need to get moving. My body is screaming at me for using muscles I haven't used in years, but I don't care. If I can move I'm moving this body. No amount of arthritis is stopping me now. Nor is my weight for that matter. This is my year. I normally don't think about myself so much as I do everyone else, but when I turned 40 I decided all that was gonna change. Let's talk about me!
  25. What does your doctor say? I have tight restriction in the morning, so I have a warm beverage, which helps. I also have tight restriction after I work out, so I usally will eat a couple after the work out in the evening. I am not sure about your port pain, but I am sure your doctor might have some insight. As far as weight loss, how is your after care going? Are you exercising, getting fills when you need them, and watching slider foods?
