  1. 1200 seems super high. My bariatric nutritionist said 1300 - I am at 10 weeks and i was like, "are you insane... " I cant eat that much but also why would i need to? I took this "advice" to my surgeon and he was like 'No way that's wrong. You should be 600-ish on average meaning anywhere from 500-800.' So all this goes to say is that they can be wrong. That said, i got into a stall and I increased my calories a bit and my CARB intake and the weight started coming off again... So i cycled up to 1000 on my highest day but I only did that for one day and it was an all day chore getting in that many calories. You're doing amazing with weightloss so stick with what you are doing. Listen to your body.
  2. That's right. We are all different, and I have a hard time with a bariatric specialist not realizing that each of us is different. One person cannot handle what another can. We have to listen to our own bodies in this journey and if our body can only handle 500 calories, that's what it is. I just feel bad that pressure is put on patients to eat more than they can handle at any given time,
  3. Take the vitamin values off the Bariatric Advantage website and compare them to more generic and less costly vitamins. If you can find some that are really close in the RDA percentage you should be able you use those.
  4. Dr. Michel of the Coastal Carolina Bariatric Center in Summerville, SC is an amazing doctor. He's nice, patient, extremely knowledgeable and best of all, direct! He was the perfect surgeon for this somewhat shy introvert. He prepared me for the pre-surgery process, the surgery itself and gave me an idea of what to expect afterwards altho it's different for everyone. I couldn't have asked for a better doctor!
  5. Gastric bypass is done as metabolic surgery on patients with hard to treat T2 diabetes, even with a BMI that is relatively low. You might want to gather information specifically about gastric bypass as metabolic surgery and not so much as bariatric surgery.
  6. My surgeon is recommending Bariatric Advantage brand vitamins, which are $38 on their web site, and $50 on Amazon. Any thoughts on this, or any cheaper alternatives for duodenal switch surgeries? I don't want to cheap out on good vitamins, but if I need to take these for the next 30 years, $500-$600/yr starts to add up

    A possible solution?

Wow, amazing full list. You are a bariatric bad ass. Update us on the runs when you have time. My mother passed away from cancer in 2013 I had surgery in June 2014. My goal was to do a 5K in her memory. First 5k (turkey trot) in November 2014 . Race for the cure was on Mother’s Day. Emotional to cross the finish line. I went on to do 10, half and full marathons. Still amazed that I’m doing this in my 50’s. I carb load for half and full marathons. My bariatric team had no clue how to fuel with a bariatric stomach. I hired a sports medicine dietician to help me dial things in. I learned many things from the other bari -athletes on this site. I love shalane Flanagan (Olympic runner) book. Eat slow run fast. I am doing race to Robbie creek half marathon. It’s an elevation mountain trail run. Idaho wine run half or full. Beautiful vineyards and wine tasting after party. I’m still deciding on charity runs for 2020.

    December Surgery

I was originally scheduled for gastric sleeve surgery, but it got switched to a bypass due to issues found with my endoscope. I'm returning to the dietician next week to get the new plan of eating post-surgery, right before I begin the 3 week pre-op diet on November 24. My knees desperately need replacing and my surgeon said I could start getting my knees replaced 6 months after my bariatric surgery. Yesterday, I was able to get an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon in February to evaluate and make a plan. I know you will do great! I have a friend in Florida who had a gastric sleeve last December and is down about 70 lbs. When she was feeling discouraged about the restrictions during the holidays, she reminded herself, "I'm getting a sleeve for Christmans!"
  9. Search for a blog called world according to egg face. Many great recipes for all stages after bariatric surgery. The ricotta bake is super yummy.

    Protein and Weight Loss (unrelated)

Congrats to you! I remember from doing keto/low carb way of life prior to have WLS, I lost 55 or maybe 60 lbs in 15 months..yeah, not fast..that I finally found out that TOO much protein gets converted to glucose! I was like "say what?" as I chomped on my 4th piece of bacon that my keto WOL said I could 'eat' as long as I stayed under 20 grams a day (this was in PRE-SURGERY years - I don't eat bacon now out of choice) Although I've had 2 different nutritionists, my primary care dr and 2 bariatric surgeon's confirm that for me, I still just had to ask the surgeon I ended up using...whether I'd still have to be mindful of keeping my protein down...and the answer was that 'yes, too much protein can still and would still get converted to glucose at some point"..but was relieved when my 'target macro' for protein was 80 grams. I have that tidbit stuck in the back of my head so I always get nervous when I go over 80 (am female and only 5'6")...I just chant to myself 'glucose, glucose, glucose"..LOL..and my surgeon was also clear that the majority of protein being taken in during post-op was going all towards healing primarily. I just know 'me' so I keep myself in constant check on my specific protein macro which was identified as my ideal target. Most guys on here I've seen with a much higher protein target. I guess my question would kind of be..IF I were a guy...LOL...is would I lose more weight with less protein (i.e.or even for me as a woman..eating less than 80 but more than 63 or 64?). For me with my SLOW metabolism, my weight loss picks up when I keep my carbs a bit lower than my dr's macro but NOT as low as I was originally keeping my carbs out of habit from doing keto WOL. It's interesting finding out what our 'new normals' are and it is nice when we can work with our teams and make adjustments if needed...to see if that impacts our weight loss..especially when I have been STALLED!

    Protein and Weight Loss (unrelated)

I believe in the beginning my surgeon \ nutritionist only count the liquid protein is be be certain we are getting and absorbing all the protein we need. This will change as I am able to consume more foods and hit goal weight. I can say I did not have any of health issues many have had, my labs were great, I feel good, have energy and honesty forget I had the surgery. I am losing weight, it is working for me. Here is a link that may help. Not only is the minimum protein intake not achieved by most patients, there are unique circumstances that potentially impact digestion and absorption of dietary protein following bariatric surgery. Due to anatomical changes following the majority of procedures performed today, specifically the reduction in stomach capacity, hydrochloric acid, digestive enzymes, and potential rearrangement of the small intestine, protein digestion and absorption may be impacted. http://bariatrictimes.com/inadequate-protein-intake-bariatric-surgery-dietitian/

Its frustrating figuring out bariatric stages etc. Keep working with your team, things will get better over time. You are new to the site, take what’s useful and ignore the rest. You can block people if you like.

Not so easy to make friends here...

And this AM, my back HURTS- something I CANNOT BLAME on Bariatric SURGERY- I am 73, arthritic since 25, being " Creaky- Jointed" goes with The Territory, even Spinal Joints, too too many years over 300 pounds did not HELP Matters, I'll whimper and arise pretty soon- it's still a Good Life when all is SAID and DONE! 👈👵👉
  15. Just got my PICO ( a mini-drain) dicontinued after 2 months of a minor surgery that my stupid General Surgeon ( although I do hate so bad- mouthing another female) boogered up- left me with a distended upper arm with a non- healing surgical wound distended with blood clots- my theory? She failed to ligate a teeny blood vessel and it kept drip- drip- dripping under the skin. 1.5 kudney- basins full of clots and tunnelling both directions for 5 cm under the skin surface and raised up like a "breast implant" Sorry for the TMI but that WAS what it most resembled. Surgery was September 24th and after weekly PICO changes I am FREE on November 13th- whew-ee. Frightening that Ms Inept MD. also does Bariatric SURGERY but Praise GOD above , Not Mine! So drains do perform a purpose, if needed They Are Good but Many Many people escape THEM- if you do emerge from the OR with one they do speed up healing well. Had a Jackson- Pratt with my last open Abdominal- not my Bariatric- except for a little wider scar THERE it was GOOD FOR ME and speeded healing up! So Good Luck, a Smooth SURGERY and may yOu Always heal by" First Intention" healing from the Inside Out like my Last little SURGERY- The Pits- and IT STILL us a little sore there after nearly 2 months. And no sympathy from anybody because it was an ELECTIVE ONE.

    Nervous

Hi and good luck, best wishes to you! I was set on going with the sleeve, but my bariatric surgeon recommended the RNY due to my acid reflux and I've already read where folk are having revisions from the sleeve due to developing or worsening reflux issues. That was my main reason and I'm getting fine with it.

    🍂 Nov 2019 Challenge🍂

Day 13 The season I'm most grateful for is Spring. The renewal of life after a long, dark rest. Of course that brings on my Spring-time allergies, but I'll take them to have the smell of newly growing plantlife. I also get to drive through National Forest every day so I drop my window open and take in the smells of new life. Puts me in my happy place. Mirror Mirror Question - The status of my hair is - thin and straggly. And that's before surgery! I'm taking Biotin everyday like clockwork so I'm hoping to see some new growth there in the nearer future. I miss my thick hair, even though it was a pain to deal with. Though I must say, not having to shave every day because that hair is gone too, is a bonus I'm appreciating! HAHA!

#13 - Even though Autumn is my favorite, I am most grateful for Spring, the time of birth, growth and renewal. Mirror question - actually, my hair was much better in middle school. I think I have finally stopped losing my hair (again) from an illness that I had in April.

    Wait wait wait

I had my last visit with the bariatric team was October 23. I had completed everything the insurance required, which included 3 month medically supervised weight loss program, dietician visit, 2 psych sessions, 6 weeks group therapy, vascular surgeon evaluation, endoscope, and monthly mandatory bariatric support group. A couple of days later, I was called to set a “hold date” to get on the surgeon’s schedule pending insurance approval. The soonest I could get at the location I wanted was December 16. Approval came last Friday, just over 2 weeks, so date was finalized.

    My Plastic Surgery Thread

I have a PCP for the fact I have a bazillion medical conditions and she isn’t very understanding at all. She thinks she can play devils advocate about things like surgery. Like here I was trying to get answers and help for my weight to where I was at least 208lbs on the doctor office scale and BMI of 40 and she was like oh but you look fine, your weight is fine ... I has to take it into my own hands and find a endocrinologist after the first one I saw was basically an ass about the whole thing. It was the second doctor that finally listened and referred me to Cleveland clinic for bariatric surgery. But my PCP after having surgery and i saw her after her maternity leave , about some post op issues basically might as well have just said oh I told you so (not to have surgery) stuff happens and I knew I was at risk given my list of conditions. My point being we know better than some random doctor does and if we feel it’s the right thing it’s what we do. I didn’t even mention to her my recent surgery Which was also necessary. But she didn’t agree with me the first time I had it. And sometimes crap happens and you have to deal with another surgery. my brain is scrambled. Sorry. Hopefully you can get what you need for your upcoming surgery out of this doctors office. Before you find a new doctor. They should be happy you are just there for pre op clearance and it’s not up to them to decide if you need the surgery or not or to say what they think is fine (insurance isn’t paying) I have to jump through hoops for everything and get referrals for any test or doctor or surgery and the office I go to is terrible at getting these things going. I can’t even get the name and referral for a spine doctor. Would you believe she sent me to one knowing how bad the doctor was and when I tell her repeatedly she ignored me and then finally admitted oh he has a reputation. She gave me a whole speech of what she thinks I should do knowing I can’t do it (or should know) It can be frustrating. But congrats on getting closer to surgery!

    The Maintenance Thread

Okay so this is the way it was explained to me by my bariatric clinic: Insulin-resistance plays a HUGE part in how our metabolisms work and the longer we have disordered diets (binge/purge, or binge/crash diet, or calorie restrict/binge exercise) we mess with all of our hormones and homeostasis signals get their wires crossed and our set points keep going up,up,up, and up. WLS disrupts all of the “bad” data and our bodies “forget” the previous set point. We go into free-fall and actually start mobilizing stored fat for energy instead of our bodies storing MORE fat in response to calorie deprivation. The exact mechanism of action is unknown, but VGS and Bypass have the same effect. Sadly the phenomenon seems to stop somewhere around the 12-18 month PO mark, and then our bodies yet again start recording data and “punishing” us for bad decisions. Metabolic free-fall ends and we better be able to make good choices or else we start the vicious cycle all over again.

    Food journal apps?

Baritastic. Food, water, weight, tracks everything you need and is designed for bariatric patients. I know it doesn't connect with your doc but I'd tell them too bad and that you can show them when you have appointments. Baritastic is that good.
  25. Well, I am pretty new into the endurance events - finished a sprint tri last month and doing a 50 mile bike event in 2 weeks. I am totally experimenting with nutrition at this point - but finding a LOT of energy and good recovery with WFPB (whole food plant based.) It is pretty amazing who many world class athletes use this eating lifestyle to enhance their performance and reduce recovery time. So far, the RX bars which have 24 carbs, but also 12 gm of protein are working for me during training. (I do not eat sugar - it makes my joints swell and I hurt all over. ) I know I need to add some electrolytes to my water, so this week I am looking at some protein/electrolyte additions to see how that goes. It's good to know there are other bariatric surgery athletes out there! You know, only 10% of the US population will ever compete in an endurance event, and very few bariatric patients. That kind of puts us in a very small minority of people who have overcome literally huge obstacles (our own bodies) to achieve athletic goals. Congrats to all!!!
