Let's Play A Round Of: How I Get My Protein Post WLS!
raynay05 replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I had my surgery July 25th so I'm like 3.5 months out. My typical day looks like this: Breakfast: microwave scrambled egg with 1 oz turkey, .5 oz shredded cheese and either spinach or tomatoes (totals 1 oz) Lunch: 2 oz chicken or turkey, 1 oz cherry tomatoes, 1 oz carrots and a string cheese Snack: light and fit Greek yogurt Late snack: string cheese and either carrots, tomatoes, snap peas etc (some veggie) 2 oz Dinner: 3 oz chicken and 2 oz broccoli If I have a sweet tooth I will have half of a dole dark chocolate covered banana slices pack. I average about 60-70 g of protein a day and I'm lucky if I get over 800 calories. -
I can’t meet my protein requirements
BunnyJean replied to Rose400491's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One thing that I found out in my last meeting before my surgery (Nov 8th is surgery date!!), is that we can become lactose intolerant. While most of the better protein mixes are made with whey isolate, some are not. I'm ALREADY lactose intolerant and have been for 20 years, possibly my whole life. I have to be careful. Premier Protein premixed chocolate upsets me big time. The vanilla not so much. I too bought the Genpro medical grade and tried it, it's fine. I need to pick up Unjury Chicken. The protein mix that doesn't bother me at all is Muscle Milk. I use the Vanilla Creme. Mix up a scoop of that, a tablespoon of PB2, 1/2 banana, and 8oz of Fairlife (lactose free) skim milk with ice. It's truly heaven in a glass. After surgery I cannot add the banana til after Nov 29 as I'll be on full liquids only till then. Banana is a puree food on my diet. I also use plant based protein mix and had my dietician look it over as well as the nurse that ran our life skills class. It's fine and meets all requirements. So if you have become lactose intolerant, maybe try a plant based. I've tried so many and the pea proteins just suck. The one I like the best, and it's grainy not smooth like Muscle Milk is, is Garden of Life Raw Fit. I've tried the chocolate, vanilla and Marley Coffee. LOVE that Marley Coffee! I will take a scoop of that, mix a little water with it to turn into a kinda paste, then add a small container of 0% plain greek yogurt (you could use vanilla). Mix up good. Eat it. A scoop of the Raw Fit is 28 grams protein, 1 gram sugar. Added to the greek yogurt, that's an additional 20 grams protein (I use Fage). If you make a shake out of it and use a cup of Fairlife skim milk, that's 13 grams more of protein. ONE shake, that may take you all day to drink, will have 61 grams of protein. BAM! OR If you use 2 scoops Muscle Milk (32 gr protein), 1 cup Fairlife (13 g), 1 container plain greek yogurt (20 g) and 2 tablespoons of PB2 to add peanutbutter flavor (5 g protein), you have a nice delish drink, that usually DOES NOT upset my sensitive gut, for 70 gr protein. All these are low sugar. If it takes all day to drink, you have your protein in. Adding in a TABLESPOON of Genpro medical grade no flavor adds 30 additional grams. While all these higher end protein mixes and esp the medical grade are pretty expensive. When you think about it, one of these shakes I've mentioned will probably be our MEALS for the day, makes it inexpensive compared to what we COULD be eating. Good luck! I hope some of these suggestions help because It almost sounds like you have a lactose problem now. -
Having surgery on Tuesday too!! Been on full liquids for 11 days. No veggies or meat allowed. Shakes and broth with a bit of non fat Greek yogurt.

It does kind of sound like you’re not intaking enough. 3 weeks liquid it kind of rough. I was on full liquids ( puréed soups, jello, yogurt, protein shakes) 24 hours after surgery and for the next 3 weeks I could have all of the above plus moist tuna, and puréed meats ( I skipped those cuz bleh) I just got cleared to eat regular food and I am rejoicing. You seem to be active. I’m not expert but my gut is telling me you’re not intaking enough for your body to burn off. Congrats on your weight loss tho! Every pound counts

HELP WITH LIQUID ONLY STAGE
Meguone replied to Meguone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
YES, not too much longer I've done the popsicles too, my husband keeps wanting to steal them, and i"m like NOOOO. Oh, I'm tracking for sure. I took the drink cup that I had in the hospital, it's a 20 ounce bottle, and I'm trying to do two of them, along with Jello, Kool Aid, Popsicles, broth. Oh so for the second stage, one thing we are allowed to have is creamy oatmeal. I have the Low sugar Brown sugar Quaker Oatmeal. I'm a little concerned about eating it whole, so was going to take a pack and grind in the food processor first before making it. Figured that would be better, smoother than just the regular grains. Do you think that's a good idea? I also get to have Boxed mashed potatoes (to be maid with Fairlife milk) pudding, cream of wheat, Yogurt, smooth soups, shakes. And everything that has to be made, using the FairLife milk to make instead of water, and adding powder protein to EVERYTHING -

On day 11 here. Surgery is on Tuesday. I am having a double, large abdominal hernia and the sleeve. Tones bullion has gotten me this far. I only started eating yogurt on Friday. It’s a real treat. Good luck everyone!! -
I’m on soft foods now, but eat yogurt (the oikos triple zero), protein shakes, eggs, cheese on occasion, soups with unflavored protein powder. I’m craving fruit like crazy, but know I can’t have it yet.

Once you’re home... Get out your journal and your measuring cups for your upcoming meals! Prep out two days worth as well as your protein drinks! Your pills are easier to digest if they are crushed! Mix them in with apple sauce or yogurt! If not then you will be stuck taking one pill every 15 minutes!

They were not kidding about taste changes
Berry78 replied to ctdan's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The tastes keep evolving. I was eating lots of yogurt a few weeks postop, but now I can't eat it at all, it's all just too sour (except one particular brand: Oui). -
One month out and feeling good!
TheNewMrsR replied to Rannem's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
lol I stocked up with like a 3 month supply of protein drink mixes, protein water, SF jello and pudding, bone broth, creamed soups, Greek yogurt... After what I've been able to get down there last year days I realized it's probably actually 6+ months worth of supplies considering I'm only eating a tablespoon here and a teaspoon there. Heck one small box of Jello will serve me twice a day for a week. Plus, my taste buds are suddenly changing and I'm not even enjoying my meals except the protein shakes which thankfully I still love. sonkat5355 replied to sonkat5355's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I initially started to eat the triple zero yogurt but really didn't like it afterwards so now I just eat the Chobani and it works very well yes it has some sugar but it also has protein and one fills me up and it's actually a meal. [emoji175]sonkat5355[emoji175] -
Puree Ideas, Please!
Myaiku_Kuraitani replied to GlowingGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mashed potatoes... But maybe that's a bad idea right now. It's just something I had besides Greek Yogurt and mashed up bananas and stuff like that. Some people like Hummus. That's pretty good. Calorie intake and How Much???
BostonGary replied to admrn's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'll be a year out on 11/21, I'm down 110 or so pounds. I'm loosing about 2-3 pounds a month since June, so my weight loss has slowed, But that's still "losing", and my caloric intake has increased as I've become more active and more comfortable with understanding my stomach and diet more. But here's the thing. I've tracked and I'm never above 2500 calories at one given day and I'm usually hovering around 1000-2500 a day. What I found is that I typically eat most of my calories mid-day. Dinner, I try and limit that, but of course if you eat out, that's nearly impossible. But here's the important thing. I stop eating when I feel full. I literally stop -- had enough, and that's usually around 10 oz of food. Which is not a lot of food... calories of course can vary, what you eat can make a difference. If you eat a big piece of chocolate cake, that's going to be 1000 calories, so I stay away from sugar, deserts and things of that nature and try and load up on proteins, grains and "fuel" foods that make me feel good (full) but also are not going to be a negative on my health. I'm feeling great, I'm about 30 pounds away from my "personal" goal. But if I stopped losing now and maintained this weight for the rest of my life, I'd be happy with that. So do calories matter, of course they do. But you should also trust your sleeve. Eat slower, eat better food. Stay with proteins like chicken, fish and lean red meat. Stay off fatty foods like fried foods (I don't eat them) and YES, eat carbs but health ones like brown rice, wheat and grains. Deserts... meh. I tent to have a couple bites to "try" and I'm fine with that. This surgery works if you don't have this massive obsession with food and when you get hungry, you don't binge eat or snack. So for me, it's been a terrific tool for me. If I do snack, it's something like cheese and crackers or yogurt... I haven't had a potato chip in nearly a year in a half. That doesn't mean I don't like potato chips? I've just found other things that I enjoy as much that are better options... Where could I do better? What I have not done is get enough exercise in, that's been something I've been disappointed with personally and I'm working on that by trying to find things which I enjoy vs. treadmill / walking / swimming (which I find to be a time waste and boring). So I've started Tennis and more active "sport" things which can get me a good cardio on a regular basis. So some pointers that I live by now: - Count your calories, but don't obsess. I keep within 2200 (as a male) - Eat healthy calories. Get into better habits, now is the time. "Soup is always better than a sandwich." Common sense. - Stop eating when you feel the slightest bit full - TRUST YOUR SLEEVE - Don't drink when you eat, you'll fill up quicker and be hungry sooner - Get more exercise (a struggle we all face) - Eat only when you're hungry, "don't social eat". Food is energy, but you only need it when you need energy. Your body will tell you when... people tend to just eat to eat for various reasons. Eat only when you feel hungry, then go to the top of this list and obey... LOL -
3 days out and hungry
TheNewMrsR replied to ToughButFair's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Following. Three days post op and I feel like I'm starving. Yesterday I was able to get down 1 protein shake, 1/2 cup chicken bone broth, 1 tsp chocolate sugarfree pudding mixed with 1 tsp non fat ricotta cheese, 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt, 1 sugarfree popsicle, and about 1 - 20 oz bottle of water. I also walked about 3 miles. I feel like I have done nothing but eat and drink constantly. I'm exhausted from thinking about what I need to eat and when. I went to sleep last night asking myself what the heck I have done to myself. I have lost 10 pounds since Monday through this morning (Saturday) (6-days). I hope a day comes when I don't feel like I'm starving to death. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app -

Almost a year out and scared...
James Marusek replied to Lulu_RNY's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There are two phases to weight loss surgery - the Weight Loss Phase and the Maintenance phase. The strategies for each phase is different. This is the approach I used in the Maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf It is common to have some limited weight gain after gastric bypass surgery. They call it a 20 pound bounce. The important thing is not let go beyond it. According to my nutritionist, meals (at one year post op and beyond) should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs after the first couple years post-op. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. Before surgery, I had constant hunger. When I was eating a meal, my mind was thinking what I would have for my next meal. It was incessant. Now the interesting thing that occurred after my RNY surgery was that I completely lost my hunger. It was not difficult to plan my minuscule meals because I wasn't really hungry. This condition does not last forever but for about a year and then the hunger returns. It just isn't as strong as before. I also had a sweet tooth before surgery. Chocolate by itself isn't the primary problem but the sugar is. During the winter I normally drink a cup of hot cocoa. But it must be the No Sugar Added variety. Also Adkins makes a number of chocolate treats that contain artifical sweeteners that might satisfy your sweet tooth. -
Sleeve post-op diet: Being ahead of the post-op idet
Rose400491 posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hello! I got my gastric sleeve done on October 17th. I’ve been on full liquids for 4.5 weeks (2 pre-op, 3 post-op). Because I’ve been on this liquid diet for so long since my surgery I cannot stomach the yogurt or jello that I’m allowed to eat so I’ve mainly been on protein, water and soup. I’m supposed to start my puréed diet on Monday but I’ve been able to hold down puréed foods now for the last 2-3 days. Last week I started blending up my soups and I was able to keep that down with no discomfort, nausea or severe dumping. Yesterday I mashed up some avocado with lime and alittle salt and ate about two tablespoons (took me 30-45ish minutes but it got me full). Today I’m going to work and on my puréed diet I can have eggs and I wanted to make myself some scrambled eggs with skim milk because it’s easy and convenient. I should be good right? I felt bad even mashing up that avocado cause I was worried about messing up my new stomach but I had no problem and I actually felt really good getting some nutrients into my body -
Yes, getting the protein in has been difficult. I'm on stage 3 diet so I'm allowed yogurt and ricotta cheese. I'm not a fan of Greek yogurt but I found it's more palatable if I add a little stevia. So two stevia packets to one container of yogurt. Stir. Then at meal time I mix 1 tsp of the yogurt with 1 tsp of the non fat ricotta cheese, I also get sugar free pudding, cream of wheat, creamed soups ect. That gives my protein a little boost. Plus a half a protein shake in between. I also have protein water so I'm trying to make every bite and sip count for my protein. Did they send you home with those little tiny medicine cups? My nurse gave me about a dozen and I'm doing like you. Filling them, lining them up and sipping on them as often as I am able. Have you been able to get out and walk. I just mapped my apartment complex and it's just about a half mile around the perimeter so I'm trying to do one or two laps every hour that I'm awake. One month Post-OP and here is what I've accomplished:
PROS: Lost 22 lbs. No longer on blood pressure meds. No longer require CPAP. No snoring. Dropped from size 18 to 16. My shoes fit better. Increased walking from about 500 steps on day 1 after surgery to 12,000 steps per day after one month. Back to resistance training after 3 weeks and nearly up to my pre-surgery routine. Back to yoga and slow regaining abdomincal strength. Full of energy. Calorie intake has increased from about 300 per day (first week) to about 900 per day (surgeons recommendations). Discovered new protein foods like powdered peanut butter and nutritional yeast. Discovered that low fat yogurt and ricotta and cottage cheese can be quite yummy. Discovered that i can survive quite happily without alcohol, cofffee or sugar. Discovered that its incredibly empowering to be able to decline sweets and treats because I truly have no interest in them now.
CONS: I nearly killed myself because my feet got tangled in my too-loose pants at the top of the stairs. I pee twice a night. I don't poop nearly enough. My hips and butt kinda hurt from joint pain, I don't know why. I do get pretty tired in the afternoon. I have some insomnia but I found that if I have a little snack before I got to bed, that I sleep better.

I can’t meet my protein requirements
Fibro Queen replied to Rose400491's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 10/17. Every protein shake and powder gave me issues. And Just couldn't deal with them. In the hospital I wasn't going to be calling for a nurse for diarrhea and be caught without their attention. At home I just didn't want to deal either. I would attempt to do a smoothie every other day with frozen vanilla yogurt, Greek yogurt, mango ice, (allergic to bananas) and V-Core vanilla bean protein powder, 1/2 scoop gives 15 g protein. By the time I was done, a 4oz glass was about 20-25g protein, and I could probably not have any issues if like I said I did this every other day. On pureed now. -
My menu doesn't really change much except on the weekends lol but morning is a muscle milk latte flavor cup of vanilla caramel tea....at about 9am. Noon is maybe either 2 plain rice cakes with chive and onion cream cheese or a powerful yogurt 21g of protein karma wellness water with probiotics 2pm good culture cottage cheese 18g of protein 3pm premier protein shake 30g maybe a string cheese if I feel hungry.....dinner is usually 7pm start with small soup then 2 scrambled eggs and 2oz refried beans...before bed is an oikos peanut butter and banana yogurt 15g protein

Sleeved on Nov. 1. Recovery room was rough and I threw up a couple times. After that I was wheeled to a room and slept for several more hours. All total I slept 12 hours post op. People kept talking to me but I was so out of it. I don't remember my husband kissing me and going home for the night. I finally woke up at 9pm and drank some chicken broth and walked 2 miles in laps around my ward. Sipped water. Then I konked back out. I was up every 45 minutes going pee all night long. Woke up the next day (today) and felt great. Walked over 4 miles throughout the day waiting for hubby to pick me up at 5p. The staff was calling me marathoner. I inspired other patients to get up and walk with me. I had a small cup of yogurt and some tomatoes soup and a premier chocolate shake throughout the day. Good luck to all three other November sleevers. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app

Cheating on liquid diet
KIP-MI replied to WillPowerPrincess's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon's requirement is to lose 10 pounds during the two week required liquid diet...although his liquid diet includes four cups of lettuce (2 tbl of low cal dressing) and two greek yogurts. I'm determined to do this 100% correctly. But I get the temptation for Thanksgiving Dinner. I'm the one in my family who makes the dinner (my stuffing is killer) and we have 20+ people to my house for a huge sit down feast. My surgery is on Nov 21 so I will not be tempted this year for sure and clearly not in any mood to cook or have guests. So I've told my family "I'm out...see ya at Christmas!" I've been to 44 Thanksgiving Dinners...I plan to be at least 44 more...so missing this one will be just fine. -
Post-op: How long until you ate real food?
RickM replied to Rose400491's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Our plan combined what most have as their first 2,3 or 4 phases (liquids, purees, mushes and soft proteins) into a single initial phase for the first month, progressing as individual tolerances dictate, with everything else added in after that according to tolerance. We had things like yogurt and scrambled eggs on the hospital menu along with the usual liquids - some can handle more than others depending upon inflammation, etc. The pureed lettuce they served put us off pureeing anything after that! Their general finding has been that patients do better as they move toward real food, but pace was largely dictated by individual need rather than a strict calendar. Thankfuily, it also negated the need for extensive liquid dieting pre-op to get used to the post-op world. It's all a big YMMV thing.
