Band to sleeve revision NEXT WEEK. Nervous.
A. Stoot replied to nessa259's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Don't be nervous, be excited. I had the band in 2005 and removed/revision September 18. I can already feel the difference, best dession I ever made because so far, I don't miss the sleepless nights, the vomiting, and the terrible acid reflux. Good look to you and congratulations on your new beginning???? -
I was sleeved in 2012. At my highest weight I was 330. When I started the sleeve journey I was 299. I went down to 168 pounds. Prior to surgery I had severe reflux and took two omeprazoles a day. I was able to quit them. Eventually I needed to go back on them. The reflux came back pretty severely. I went to the hospital in January 2015 thinking I was having a heart attack. All my tests came back negative. I saw a pulmonologist, I then had an endoscope done, I had many other tests done too, including barium swallows and other tests that tested my swallowing function etc. The acid reflux came when I drank Water, I was constantly choking on my food. I ended up with severe esophageal spasms. I stopped eating most meat and eat mashed potatoes, oatmeal, I eat a lot of Soups. I went from 168-205 pounds due to not being able to follow the high Protein diet. I am having revision to bypass on March 21st. This is not something that happens to everyone, but I do highly suggest that if you suffer from severe GERD prior to surgery that you explore the other option. Having surgery twice is not easy. It's also a horrible feeling having the spasms, and it's extremely depressing to feel like you have failed, when you felt like you were on top of the world at one time. Had I known that the acid reflux would start wearing away my esophagus and I would constantly feel like crap I would have gone straight to the bypass the first time. I spent a year researching everything I could on revision surgery and there is a huge amount of people that are being revised from sleeve to bypass due to this issue, moreso than people needing to have a second surgery to lose more weight. I have a feeling that Insurance Companies are going to eventually request more testing on GERD prior to sleeve surgeries in the future due to not wanting to pay out for an eventual revision surgery. Everyone needs to make their own personal choice, but as someone that went through this, if you have serious issues with GERD, talk to your doctor about your choices of sleeve vs. bypass. I wish I did. Best of luck.

Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
SleevedK replied to MelissaWisconsin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Congratulations on almost being free of the lap band. I had a lap band for like 13 years and it caused me so much pain and misery over the years. Amazing how we put up with so much suffering because it starts to seem "normal". I ended up going with a sleeve revision, but knowing what I know now, I would have either gone with the bypass instead or just tried to live with my normal stomach. The sleeve's tendency to cause reflux and hiatal hernias is a real problem. I didn't understand back then just how bad it could get. -
Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
Sunnyway replied to MelissaWisconsin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have not had lap band but I have had two prior bariatric surgeries that failed. I am now going to have RNY Gastric Bypass revision at age 73. I have learned a lot since I started on this path 6 months ago. Good for you for moving forward toward a healthy weight. However, I'm concerned that you have not learned how to eat differently yet. Consider the possibility that you are a sugar/food addict. If you are, Keto is not the answer for you. You need to change your habits entirely. I strongly recommend some reading for you. Choose at least one book from each of these groups. Finally, conclude with Success Habits of Weight Loss Patients. Get started now. Apparently you have already had the surgery, so there is no time to be lost. -
How many Flintstone vitamins?
James Marusek replied to Beautiful Mess's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I had a RNY and the Vitamin requirements may be different that those who undergo a sleeve. I was directed to take 3 Flintstone multivitamins a day. I have heard that those requirements have been revised down within the last year. The current requirement is 2. -
Which to do....
ShelterDog64 replied to Corey A Duplantis's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Your BMI is about 74...in the practice where I was recently sleeved, you would be a candidate for a Duodenal Switch or a Roux-en-Y bypass, or for a sleeve gastrectomy as a first step, to help you lose some weight prior to a revision to a DS or RNY. This is definitely something that you can only decide in talking with your surgeon, because your co-morbidities will contribute to the decision in a major way. Good luck to you. -
Dr. Aaron Hoffman - Lap Band done in Buffalo, NY (Dr. Hoffman)

well, im six weeks since my last fill which left me little room for a lot of food, but for some reason, i actually gained. I started atkins 8 days ago, phase 1 and have lost about 7 or 8 lbs. I cant believe I allowed myself to gain 30 lbs after the band revision, how stupid is that!!, anyway, dwelling over it is not going to help, but i never thought i would have to do atkins again after the band... -
August Surgery Buddies!
LookingForward22 replied to I Am Enough!'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Aug 16th is when my VSG is scheduled. I was preparing myself for bypass … but my surgeon actually suggested VSG after we talked and said if we need to go further, a revision to DS (since I’m a high BMI) is her suggestion. But she’s optimistic that I will be able to meet my health goals and do well with VSG - so now the countdown begins. She will do a hernia repair and also check out my liver while she’s in there - and biopsy if needed. Not looking forward to the 8 day liquid diet… or blood thinner injections - but I am looking forward to all the benefits to come. I’m 48… slightly concerned my thyroid will be a challenge with loosing, but I have managed to loose 50 pounds in the past year (15 of that the last 3 weeks) so I think I have a good momentum going into this. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s progress! -
Gastric Plication Weight Loss Surgery to gastric sleeve weight loss surgery revision
TijuanaPlication replied to Sarah Elsekhawy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Sarah, long time no hear. You're brave. Please keep us posted. I stalled the same as you so I'm definitely interested. You may want to post on http://www.sleeveplicationtalk.com/ too as I'm sure they'll want to hear. My thoughts of revision options were that it might be possible to get the intestinal part of the Duodenal Switch if you meet the criteria (I'm not heavy enough - BMI ~29 at the mo). If you did go that route you'd seriously have to be committed to taking your vitamins, getting in 100g protein/day and getting regular labs done. Good luck and ((hugs))! -
It has been 6 months since my VSG.... And I still LOVE my sleeve. Aside from marrying my husband, this is the best thing I've ever done. No regrets... I'm not at all saying its easy. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. The emotional stuff is hard. I look in the mirror and cry sometimes, but the good outweighs the bad completely. I still write down everything I eat. Protein first. I still (and plan to forever) stay away from potatoes, bread, Pasta, and rice. I try my best to take in enough Fluid (notice I said TRY). I still use Protein shakes and bars as Meal Replacements from time to time-- but truth is, I really enjoy them. I exercise 1-2 hours most days a week- walking, jogging, weights, crunches, squats, BodyFlow classes (my new fav), whatever-- but tonight is my first belly dancing class. Wow, never would've done that before! As of this week I am 92 lbs down and officially "overweight!" I have 8 lbs until I meet my original goal of 100 lbs GONE! (But I'll probably revise and lower that goal). I can't explain how much I truly love this lifestyle-- the workouts, the food choices, the energy... Just feeling so good. Oh , and the sex hehe, sorry. Info: Age: 26 Ht: 5 ft (4' 11.5") Sleeved on 6/11/2013 Highest weight: 245 Surgery weight: 240 Current weight: 148 Largest size in my closet; 24. Most days I fit a 20-22. Currently size 12.

Not as much restriction as expected!
God4me replied to TXBrittBritt's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello I am a revision as well. Often as having a revision, we compare restriction with the band as I did. Having our type of surgery as I did in the same surgery (revision) having scar tissue plays a part in that. The Sleeve is a sterner master and I was worried when I could eat more after a month. Liquids do go down quicker and each food type has the ability to have different type of restriction. Liquids= no restriction/ Soft food= moderate restriction/ Solid foods depending on what kind= restriction. I am 2 months out and have been a slow loser with the 3 week stall and for my age and pre-menopause, taking BP pills ALL have played a part in my weight lost. Not to forget your "bougie" size, the measuring device used to measure your new stomach size. ALL of these factors play a part. Drink plenty of Water, Protein a must and watch slider foods that will not support your weight lost. The sleeve works you just have to work with it and not compare yourself with others. Remember this is no the band , thank God and we have a new stomach that we have to get use to. I have restriction and I weight out my food and STOP willfully when I feel the full signal, Over eating with the sleeve is out of bounds as it is nothing like the band, as stated this is sterner master and will not allow you to get away with eating around it. Work the Sleeve it is truly a great tool! I remember being angry as I was 2 months out and only 15lb loss. Well since then I have lost 4lbs and it just came off. -

Anyone for September 2020?
tarotcardreader replied to vsg_britt_091420's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeve does lead to more revisions because revising bypass is more complex and requires skill level that most doctors dont have. However its a very exciting time for everyone and nothing to argue or get your guys panties in a Bunch about! Enjoy the excitement 🥳 -
Thanks ladies I appreciate the support. Bayougirl, did your surgeon say why he needed to unfill your band for your tummytuck? My PS did not unfill my band before my tummy tuck surgery...he said it wasn't necessary. Since it is not clear as to what caused my band to slip I am wondering if the tt surgery had anything to do with it. My band slipped 4 months post tt surgery. My insurance will pay for the lapband revision so I am grateful for that. Thanks for sharing your experience Jean. Having more problems is what I am afraid of if I keep the same band. Is your dialated esophogus issue possibly related to the previous band slip? I understand your point about the 4cc band being too small for some people, but I actually thought it was the perfect size for me. I always thought the bigger bands would be too big for me. I have lots of questions for my surgeon regarding the different bands as well as the gastric sleeve procedure. I plan to have answers by the end of this week so I have some idea of how I want to proceed. Thanks again ladies!

Surgeon trying to talk me into band.
Poorehouse replied to bigbeauty78's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have the band and I have had it 5 years ... I HATE it! I still feel hungry and I don't get a full feeling I get a stuck feeling! I have had port replaced and I had to have band replaced too! I never lost more than 25-30 pounds. And after reading band to sleeve revisions on this site and all. Their problems I am having my band removed and checking into the sleeve myself. If had to do again I would have done sleeve to begin with. Plus consider the cost long term ... The band requires office visiting and fills every 4-6 WEEKS until goal is met IF it gets met and that cool take over a year. Very expensive! It adds up! Sleeve after your post op you will follow up every 6 months I believe. Get another opinion ... It may be you are too small for surgery -
I had a consult with a surgeon and he's trying to talk me into the band. Given my bmi is only 36, He thinks I will loose a great amount of weight and become malnourished. I believe there are other reason for his push on the band. Like follow ups and the fills, means more $$. I over heard him through the wall, to the room next to mine, trying to push the band on another patient. Should I give the band a try first then have revision later if it fails?? So stressed over this!

Surgeon trying to talk me into band.
clk replied to bigbeauty78's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do a search for GERD here. We have plenty of folks that have been sleeved with it, too. Acid is an issue for many post op, but for the vast majority it fades before the first year post op. In my case, 4-6 months and I was off my PPI. I've been on it since for my pregnancy and two other short periods when I was under an incredible amount of stress. Other than that, the issue resolved and it's this way for many. Losing too much weight and being malnourished is hardly a concern here. You'll see the occasional voice chime in that they got smaller than they wanted, but it's rare. And you're only malnourished if you choose not to eat adequate nutrition and take your B12, multi and Iron, if needed. I did have an issue with B12 and iron, but I've always had iron/anemia deficiencies. Now I'm on supplements that help me feel better than ever before. Additionally, you'll see many people get revised to sleeve from the band - and many of those people do it in part due to stomach damage and acid problems! My opinion is that your doctor is just more comfortable with the band procedure. This happens and it's true that the sleeve still isn't done at the rate of the older band and bypass. Only you can make this decision, but I can tell you that I was dead set on a band and thought a sleeve was too drastic...until I did six months of research and lurked on the band talk site and saw how miserable people were with the band surgery. Best of luck and I hope that you find a solution that makes you comfortable. I chose to self pay because my insurance covers only band and bypass. ~Cheri -

I had a band to sleeve revision. Do not get the band. Unless you really want to have another surgery soon. I have spoken to hundreds of bandsters who are not happy. I was at goal when I had my revision, but needed my band out. I haven't become malnourished. Actually I am doing sooooo much better since I can eat proper foods without throwing up. Keep looking for another surgeon. -

So stressed over this! I have had the band for five years and for about the first 2 1/2 it worked great. I am finishing my final process to have a revision to the sleeve. Because my complications with the band are becoming so unbearable! I am actually on an all starch diet due to gastritis which I have NEVER had in my life. Now with these last few weeks constant diarrhea and dry heaves are horrible and make u feel dizzy! Honestly I would choose the sleeve first if I knew what I know now. Aftercare is set up for any and everything required. You don't even come in till you feel you need it. Why put yourself through two surgeries the sleeve was the newest option When I got my band five years ago Chat With me privately if you want to keep talking about it -
I got the special price, the normal price $2,900 but that's still good! My surgeon is Dr. Zeev Duieb and he works through Masada hospital. I think his main office is in Berwick but I see him at the hospital in st kilda on Balaclava road. I'm pretty sure my mum has been referred to another surgeon for the revision but the same surgeon will do our lapband. She has to get the revision, heal and then get the band. Which kind of sucks but she won't be too far behind me I guess.
