I agree with Lizonaplane, you are very close to a a healthy weight for your height, weight loss is going to be lower and slower for you now, much patience will be needed. The weight loss you are achieving is actually really good as this point and at your weight.

I take a number of psych meds but not Paxil. I'm 4 months post sleeve and I have not had any issues. I didn't have any extended release or slow release meds, but those can be an issue. I didn't have to change any doses. Some people have mood issues after surgery due to the fat releasing estrogen during weight loss, but I haven't had any issues.

You know what, I totally get it, your mind is yet to catch up with your body and weight loss. You are obviously looking very different if the courts asked you to get a new driving license. Take your time and trust the process, how about looking at some pictures of yourself from before and after and noting the changes mentally. You can keep this pics totally private. The best of luck x

Heart valve issues anyone?
OutdoorsGirl replied to liveaboard15's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have AFIB and was able to have surgery. After the surgery, my heart rate was really high and my regular medications weren’t working. I ended up in the hospital an extra week until they were able to get the rate under control with more medications. The cardiologist will sign off on the surgery if it will benefit your condition. Weight reduction should also make heart procedures safer if you need to have them in the future. I’m seeing a heart specialist next month and expect that I’ll need to have a procedure to get my heart rhythm back to normal. Hopefully January will be a good month for weight loss. Good luck to you. -
I agree with the above advice. Also, consider that you might be grieving for the loss of food as a comfort mechanism. Can you make an appointment with the bariatric therapist who approved your surgery? They can help untangle this. And if you do decide to take an antidepressant (which is probably a good idea), make sure you talk to your doctor about taking one that's not likely to cause weight gain. There are a lot that can cause weight gain in some people, but there are many that do not. Keep us posted!

Hair Loss…AGAIN?! Over a year out
catwoman7 replied to Lilfootie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'd check with my PCP or surgeon. Hair loss that far out from surgery usually isn't telogen effluvium, the loss that is common after bariatric surgery (and can be a side effect of any major surgery, actually). It may be related to a nutrient deficiency or something. At any rate, I'd certainly mention it to my doctor. -
Heart valve issues anyone?
GradyCat replied to liveaboard15's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have Mitral Valve Prolapse, bradycardia, and an enlarged heart and I was able to have WLS. It required my cardiologist to sign off/approve it, and he did saying that the very minor risk of surgery was far less than the good the weight loss would do for my condition. -
Hair Loss…AGAIN?! Over a year out

Did you have thinning hair before the surgery? How old are you? Other than nutritionally, I don't know what else could be causing it. Mine is hereditary. -
Reverse gastric bypass

Icelandic yoghurt is also called skyr, and it is absolutely the perfect food for a weight loss surgery patient—high protein, low carb, and low fat. -
I feel like I have no familial support for my surgery.
vikingbeast replied to itami o's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow. Let's call a spade a spade—that is abuse on their part. But screw them. They're not going to be supportive no matter what. Let's talk about the reality here. Are there people who could lose 100 lbs. on their own with diet and exercise? Yes. And they all have something they'd really like to sell you. It is NOT the easy way out. It is basically giving you a lifesaving tool—the TEMPORARY ability to restrict your calories and not be starving hungry and tempted to undo it. Basically you are going to get a year or so to reevaluate your relationship with food without having things like a sugar addiction hanging over your head. But it is still diet and exercise. I wish I could beam into your head the wonderment I feel as I shrink down. I'm 6 feet tall and have lost 85 pounds in four months (including pre-op). I haven't broken out into a random sweat; I can work all day (physical labor) and just be tired when the other guys are tired; I can run and jump and fit in spaces meant for average size human beings; I can buy clothes in normal stores; I don't have any comorbidities anymore, and in fact when I got Covid, it was mild and my doctor said my weight loss almost certainly helped with that. tl;dr You do this for you, and the hell with what your gaslighting parents say. Psychiatric ward, my hind foot. -

Hair Loss…AGAIN?! Over a year out
Lilfootie posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Has anyone experienced a second round of hair loss? I’m not 100% sure it is a massive amount like last time, but I suddenly noticed balding spots when I put my hair up, my drain was clogged, and when I dried my hair it felt thinner. Am I imagining things? It is about one year since the last round, in which I lost at least 50% of my hair, and about 14 months since my gastric bypass. Didn’t have any issues with vitamins/minerals at 1 year. Any ideas? -
Thanks I think it’s time to visit my hair dresser. I have been scared to make any major changes until the weight loss is where I’m comfortable but I don’t want long stringy hair.

It’s pretty much a given you will lose some or lots of hair. There are some who report they haven’t, but I think they are in the minority. But it’s also pretty much a given that it all grows back eventually (I have yet to read anyone report that they are 2+ years out and still have hair loss). I had cut my hair into a pixie cut around 3-4 months post op to lessen the thinning look and save my vacuum from having to suck up so much hair everywhere! Lol. I’m 3+ years post op now and my hair is just past my shoulders and just as full (if not fuller) than it was pre-op. It sucks, but it’s temporary. It won’t always be this way. Good luck! ❤️

I went with shorter hair but it's still thin. I'm not losing anymore though. But I did start with thin fine hair to begin with and the WLS made it slightly worse but it's stopped hemorrhaging so that's good. I just have learned to accept it and wear my hair short and sassy. I tried Rogaine and Nioxin but they didn't help, so don't waste your money.

unfortunately, there's not much you can do about it. Some people claim to have luck with biotin and/or special shampoo products, but others say they did nothing for them (I think if biotin "works", it's more effective once the hair starts growing back - rather than stopping it from falling out). Just know that it "will" stop and will grow back!! Some people get a shorter cut or wear scarves or something to make it less noticeable....

Hi Jenn, how have you been? And how is the weight loss coming along? -
Palak Paneer is definitely yummy. The usual style is made with cubes of cottage cheese (Paneer). But cubes rarely come in low fat or skim milk option. Hence I can't use the regular type for now. I simply substitute cottage cheese cubes for skim milk or 1% cottage cheese in the curry. Taste is more or less same and protein quality is great for this phase of weight loss. But since you're almost 3 years (I think) post-Op, you can easily do cottage cheese cubes. Paneer (cottage cheese) blocks can be found in certain western groceries otherwise easily found at any Indian grocery and in TO you'll have no issue finding Indian groceries.

Feeling guilty eating not as healthy as i could
Arabesque replied to Annalaura88's topic in Food and Nutrition
Eating a few more vegetables than you’re ‘supposed to’ is not going to stretch out your tummy or ruin your weight loss. Unless you’re frequently eating huge portions of high fat, high carb, high sugar foods I wouldn’t worry. Out of curiosity, how far along are you? I ask because as you progress and are able to eat larger portions you’ll find the dilemma of protein vs vegetables isn’t as much of an issue. Just eat your protein first & if you can eat a little more choose vegetables. I like @ShoppGirl’s suggestion to eat vegetables as a snack. There’s a lot to learn & it takes time to discover what works for you. Because we’ve either been where you are or are still working our way through it. We understand & want you to be successful. It’s why we’re all happy to share our experiences & what we’ve learnt along the way. The reason you feel more satisfied eating a smaller portion of toast than vegetables is that the toast tends to swell in your tummy & sit more heavily. It’s why many of us are advised to avoid bread, pasta & rice while losing. (I still avoid them - can’t get my protein in & I feel blah!) Depending on how you cook them they’re relatively low calorie & you’ll get way more nutrients from the vegetables than the toast. I’ve always loved vegetables so eating so few in the beginning was very strange. I remember that first single green bean I was able to eat. So excited. Then I just slowly added a few more as I was able. At 2.6yrs post surgery I eat about 3 ozs of protein & about 1 cup of vegetables & sometimes a meal is only protein. But that works for me. Have a chat with your dietician about portion size (volume vs weight) & calories. It may put your mind at ease. -
Congratulations on the weight loss and the 18 years. A lot to celebrate.

Hiatal hernia after already having the sleeve?
Violette replied to SleevedK's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello all, Has anyone here had a hiatal hernia repair after already having the sleeve? I was sleeved in 2014 and all was going well ( uneventful recovery, Good weight loss and maintenance) until I got pregnant with my second child last year. I started to have some bad acid reflux in my third trimester ( burning pain, shortness of breath) and found out during a barium swallow and endoscopy that I have a ‘small sliding hiatal hernia’ but have not been told how exactly how big/ small the defect is. I have dysphagia which is better some days but the most persistent symptom is shortness of breathe/ a ‘tickle’ in my chest that does not want to go away. I stopped my PPI a few weeks ago for the manometry test after weaning for a little while and the rebound hyperacidity has been awful ( thank heavens for gaviscon) In any case, i’m supposed to be meeting with my surgeon later this month to discuss results and like some of you, I would prefer not to convert to rny if I can have this addressed some other way. I would love to hear your stories! -
I would contact a bariatric therapist on your team or any therapist you can get your hands on. Everyone needs help these days so finding any therapist will be a bit of a challenge but worth the effort. It’s true that weight loss is 90% a mind game. When I get stuck, it’s a strength to ask for help. You’ve already shown strength by asking for help here. Keep us posted on your discoveries.-Meg
