I want to have Weight Loss Surgery because I want to be healthy! I feel this may be one of the most selfish things I’m attempting to do in my life. Because I know it is SOLELY for me! I know that I have unconditional love from my husband and three little girls. But I want to be thinner! I am not hoping to be a size 2 or wear a bikini - I just want to feel healthier and have more energy. I know that I have been fortunate so far not to have any major health issues due to my weight. However, I am VERY overweight and have tried diets, exercise programs and have read many books. I want to be a good example for my girls on how to eat healthy and live an active lifestyle. I am a Middle School teacher. I spend 3 hours of my day walking around our very LARGE building. I get 60+ minutes of walking in everyday! I don’t want to be winded walking up the stairs, I don’t want my feet to hurt, and I especially don’t want to feel self-conscious walking around the building. I feel I am a fairly confident person once I get to know people. However, I am tired of being “the fat girl” in my group of girlfriends. I have a younger sister who is tall and thin. I am tired of being “the fat sister”. Every time my husband and I go out to a party, to a wedding or even just to dinner – I ALWAYS feel self conscious about my weight. I have a wonderful life – except for my weight. I know that WLS is not a quick fix. I know it will be tough and take a lot of work on my part. But I want to be healthy and I can’t do it on my own.

1 year and 6 mos out tomorrow!
skinnygirlwithin posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi All... It has been a while since I have been on here.... but tomorrow marks my One year & 6 Months from surgery. As I look back at my struggles and achievements; the highs & lows,– I still am so very THANKFUL for my sleeve & giving myself the best gift I could have ever given/received. I am thankful for all the support I have had from all of you!!! I started out at 253lbs and currently 146lbs. There are days were I look in the mirror and don’t see the current me. I see the original weight/old self… which I know is weird since I am a size 6/8 BUT sometimes still see the size 20w… I started really beating myself up. I was feeling like I was going crazy, but according to my doc there are others that go through this… So I went to a support group meeting last week, and someone said “you have to be nice to yourself, stop beating yourself up over everything, learn to forgive and love yourself”. I give this advice so often; I don’t know why I haven’t given it to myself. IT was such an eye opener… We are with our self all day every day… We need to be nicer to ourselves… I NEED to be nicer to myself…. I am on day 8 of taking this advice, it’s a work in progress but I am trying. Hope everyone is having a wonderful HUMP day!!! -
I had some complications pnemonia and a blood clot in my arm I am 11 days out and have been in the hospital a few times. Having said that I can say with 3 kids the hospitalization was hard but, the complications from surgery are nothing to the complications I will have in the future by staying heavy. I am so excited to think of all the things in 6 months when I've lost all this weight I am going to be able to do with them. It's worth it. Most people have small or no complications. Research YOUR surgeons complication rates and make that decision.

:clap2:Well today is better. I went for my first office visit since my surgery on Sept. 27,2007. I was glad to see my doctor. I was not so happy with him. I was hungry and felt I had left 2 messages and no one returned my calls. I wasn't in the state of emergency, no fever, nothing I felt I should call him on his cell about. But all in all I had left 2 messages. Sweet as he is, He turned it all around and said u know no matter what you can call my cell !!! Well I couldn't give a response so...He is very likeable and cute so what's a woman to do. I had lost 10 1/2 lbs so he was pleased wth me. I go back in 3 weeks for my 1st fill. He really shoots from the hip, no playing around kinda guy. Kinda harsh buts says he can't sugar coat any part of this or we run with it. Simple we use any excuse in the world to make adjustments for our crazy life style. One thing that he told me the day before the surgery, which I have to say kinda made me stand up and take notice was... He was talking to 2 other women besides myself, all getting the surgery & says look all three of yall ladies are wearing slip on shoes. So you can just throw them on and throw them off. Saying yall have made adjustments for your obesity. Which while thinking kinda pissed me off, but I had to be real or I will never get to the bottom of why I was ever over weight in the 1st place. Like he mentioned grabbing a chair without arms. I guess things we never really take notice of. My thing was seems like every time I went there everyone was larger than me. Yeah like me being 257 lbs. was small. What a joke, so I was justifiing me being severly morbitly obese. Just another excuse to excuse my lifestyle. Like a drug addict, well I only smoke a little weed or alcohol, I drink only on weekends, I'm not on the streets making an a$$ out of myself or beating my kids or the cops being at my house cause someone was out of control. Just all excuses to justify why we do what we do. By the way I do not do drugs or drink alcohol, lol So I know 1 thing for sure I have to get down to the real facts of why I seemed t not be happy , which I have loads of fun, or just seem to want to destoy my life. One thing about all this surgery, yeah I want the fine body, but my health was falling so much, I just want to be lighter & live so much longer !!! Now there I said the real TRUTH!!! :clap2:

Realistically how much weight do you expect to loose?
Grammy271 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my pysch eval a couple of weeks ago and was asked How much weight I expected to loose in the first month, 3rd month, 6th month and 1 year. I weight 270 and my height is 5' 3". Just curious if anyone else had to answer this question and how they answered. -
Realistically how much weight do you expect to loose?
BetsyB replied to Grammy271's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't set a 1-month, 3-month, 6-month timeframe, but I fully expect to lose 100% of the weight I want to lose. The psych who did my eval did not like this response; he believed me to be overconfident. (I asked him just exactly how confidence was a negative--he couldn't answer. Needless to say, when I went therapist shopping a few months later, he wasn't on my list.) I think I will be at or very near my goal by my one-year anniversary. But again, I am not sure; my rate has been consistent until now, but things are slowing down as I get closer. -
I lost 25 pounds in my first two weeks. Since then I haven't lost ANY weight. In fact I've gained 2 to 3 pounds. Is this normal? I have been following the diet, walking everyday, and doing evertying i was told. I was banded on may 5th. Please someone help me! I want to lose a few more pounds before my first fill. Am I doing something wrong? What can I DO?

I go to my 2nd dietician appt. on Thursday. I'm certain I've gained weight. To make it worse, the scale at the doctor is always a few lbs more than the one I have at home, so I'm quite certain it will be ugly. Is this going to blow the whole process for me? I know I have several more months of pre-op left. My (starts with -H-) insurance requires that I have to do 6 months cumulative, 3 of which must be consecutive, of medically supervised weight loss & exercise. Is a weight gain this early in the game going to reset the clock? This happen to anyone else?? Thanks.

I understand that not all calories are created equal. The food plan I am on is pretty strict. I was provided a binder with a list of foods that I can choose from. Lean proteins, non starchy veggies, fresh fruit, very little fat, nothing processed and no sugar. I get in between 70-80 grams of protein a day, which comes from food, not supplements. I keep a food journal and I'm not hungry in between meals, and I'm not snacking. I know the crazy fluctuation has to be water weight, I just don't know why I'm retaining so much water. I would have to consume an extra 3500 calories to gain one pound of fat. A typical breakfast for me is egg whites, spinach and mushrooms, a slice of 40 calorie bread with a fat free butter and a small banana. Lunch is usually 3 oz of boneless, skinless chicken breast, mixed non starchy veggies sautéed in Pam, 3/4 oz of triscuit crackers and a small apple. Dinner is similar to lunch. I take my vitamins in the morning with 8 oz of skim milk. Am I overthinking it? Am I just obsessing/stressing myself out? I'm drinking myself nuts. Lol -

Some people lost weight prior to surgery in the support group I attend and some folks didn't. I lost 20 pounds without even trying by cutting out the 6 diet cokes I drank each day. It is a good goal to lose some weight pre-op because it can add to your total weight loss after the operation. But this goal is possibly not set in concrete. But as you say Kaiser Northern California in Sacramento may be dictating that requirement. So drink enough Water and I wouldn't cut out all salt completely. Salt is important to your diet too. My mother cut out all salt from her diet and that drove her into the hospital emergency room. -
going to mexico alone
GeorgiaSleeverCatLady replied to chickenlittle's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Chickenlittle! I'm going to Mexico solo in July and am a bit nervous as well... the coordinator for my doctor said that a lot of people enjoy being by themselves so they don't have to entertain so that is a good way to look at it! I'm sure you'll do well! Just imagine how exciting it will be to start dropping weight!!! Good luck to you -
I am scheduled for surgery on October 28. I'm self pay (in US, not in Mexico) and have my second appointment with my surgeon in a few days. The problem is that I have been gorging on food because I feel like I'm saying goodbye to a lifelong friend and habit. I'm so ashamed that I've gained at least 5 pounds and maybe more in a month and feel like the surgeon is going to be upset. Did any of you have any weight gain in the weeks before you started your pre-op diet?
-
My surgeon was very very very straight forward in that if I gained it would be looked upon poorly, and that if I didn't loose "enough" during pre op diet that they would cancel. I wouldn't worry as much since you are in the pre op, but I would change your habits now. I changed my habits months before my diet began and didn't loose a lot, but it helped tremendously during my pre op diet.

Had my pre-op eval done today. Most things were good, such as breathing and EKG. Blood levels showed that I am so close to being diabetic (6.5 on the scale; 7 is diabetic) and my uric acid levels were high (arthritis can happen). But the good part was that the doc (who specializes in pre-op intakes and is not on the bariatric team) believes I am an excellent candidate for this procedure. Most of the problems they found with the testing will be eliminated or greatly reduced from the surgery and subsequent weight loss. Only part I hated was the blood draw. Had to be poked twice..ugh! Tomorrow I have my pre-surgery dietician meeting. liquid diet starts Sunday! Be well all! Is good to know I am not alone.

Bob, sounds like things are moving along nicely for you. I was also borderline diabetic prior to getting my band in 2006. There is a lot of history of it in my family and that was one of the things that helped me decide it was time to finally do something about my weight. You had to be poked twice for the blood draw? Ugh, were they having trouble finding a good vein or what?

Hello! Family knows more than Dr's!
bloreorbust replied to splitswitch's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey, even in situations where you "don't have as much to lose", everyone's body handles extra weight differently and sometimes even a smaller amount over that threshold causes serious medical issues as you're experiencing. Try to give them time to come around. Let them see how much work really goes into this whole process. But stay the course. If you think this is right for you, then your family is going to have to accept that one way or another. Tell your wife you're doing this in order to have a longer and healthier life with her and your children. You're tired of suffering with this excess weight and this is the help you need to handle it. Then just don't talk about it anymore for a while. Keep on planning and doing the appointments you need to, but let it all sink in with her for a while. As for your mother who thinks she is a medical professional, point her to the studies and reviews from medical professionals. Those will clearly state the relatively low risk of gastric bypass surgery, and the mountain of evidence that points to the positive effects it has on health. The rate of death is between 1-3% overall for gastric bypass, and even less for surgeon's who have performed more precedures. The rate of complications directly related to surgery is around 10%. I bet those are a lot lower than your current risk of heart attack, stroke, and sudden death due to the health conditions you currently have. Help her with the information she needs to weigh the risks against the rewards. I wish all the best for you in your journey. You will find support here and a wealth of helpful and caring individuals. Welcome. -
so at my NUT appt yesterday my weight is down another 10 pounds, so from 565 in june, now 525.

I heard about this tonight at the surgical weight loss support group. They were saying that if your bMI is above 60 then to be prepared ( by the surgeons here) to be put on a diet and have to lose weight before surgery. Ive never heard this before but I can understand about the risks. Just remember why youre doing this and youll be fine. Its always hard to lose weight, Hell if it was easy we all would have lost 70lb along time ago! Wish you much luck and keep us informed!

Out of control! I was doing so good on my diet with the nutritionist, lost 23 pounds as of 2 weeks ago.. surgery is in 13 days and it seems my appetite is crazy.. I have the feeling Ill be gaining it back by the time surgery is here... Ugh I guess its Im in the state of mind of thinking well I can just have this one more time.. one more time.. one more time... HELP!

My surgeon wouldn't even schedule surgery until I had lost 10% of my excess weight. It depends on your team, but you might not get to the pre-op diet without some work first. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App

It's a weight loss thing... make it a great day -
So, I've been trying to lose weight for years and it was always a rollercoaster for me. So now that I've been taking it serious I'm over 45 lbs down since December !! Yay me! I'm now month 5 into my 6th month preop period and I think despite my food I've done pretty damn good. I weigh in with my dietician tomorrow so I'm pretty nervous to see how much I've lost. I didn't start to see a surgeon until February, so August is my last appointment. I think the thing I'm more anxious to see change is my dating life after I drop a ton of weight. Im pretty confident but in the back of my mind I'm like I'm still the fat girl that you're ashamed of. And that's an insecurity in itself. But anyway, my main question is what are some of your goals your working towards in the pre-op and look forward to accomplish in the post op journey?

im having the gastric bypass starting weight 422 so i have yet to find any women at our weight range hopefully someone can offer some insight good luck and congratulations!! -
Can't believe my surgery date is coming so soon. I've been thinking of weight loss surgery for about 5 years now. I decided 2014 would be my year. I've done a three month health plan with my surgeon and dietician, as required by my health insurance. I was approved within days and received the call today for the 21st. For the past three months, I was expecting sometime in June, but feel excited, relieved and nervous that it is so soon. I've lost 34 lbs since Jan 7 and will try to lose about 5-7 more before surgery. My starting weight is about 450. I'm 6' and turning 30 in June. I'm nervous I won't be able to lose enough for it to even be noticeable. I'm trying not to worry, though. I know this is the best thing for me. I have not her choice. Anyone else in my weight range that can provide some insight? Thank you!
