  1. This is what I feel right now and I know my feelings will change once things get to a new normal. I am 9 weeks post op, I’ve lost 55 lbs so far, I have not had any stalls, and I researched the pros/cons of surgery for months before surgery. I know numerous people IRL who have had the surgery 1, 3, 5, 7, & 10 years ago and none of them regret it. But if I knew how my recovery would be, I would not have had the surgery. I have had other health issues arise because of certain issues that come with surgery and have been in some type of pain for the past 5 weeks! I’ve had to take off from work many mornings or afternoons due to not being able to handle the pain in my office. I can feel myself becoming healthier and I know that in a few weeks/months I will have overcome this other issue but for now I do regret my surgery. Keep in mind I’ve also had to be treated for severe dehydration twice in the past month, so that has also contributed to my current thought process. Good luck with your journey! I’m sure you will make the right choice for you!

    GO SLOW OR YOU WILL BE PUNISHED BIG TIME! As a male and someone who has tested the envelope his whole life i tried to push and mix stuff up. I will just tell you what i did and hopefully it will give you some guidance I purreed some rice into my broth about 4 days out and slammed it. Of course it was rice with seasoning and the broth was loaded. It hit hard and within minutes came flying back up. Was not a fun experience. So take it slow As a trained chef i would go about 10 of the spice you used to use and move up from there, but heck ya mix er up and enjoy the journey

    Weight Gain Pre Op

    Thank you! Yea I called them and they said it shouldn’t be a problem but I didn’t realize I gained 10 pounds and I am freaking out. I tried to have one last night of having a couple of beers with a burger with some friends and it bit in the butt with 10 pounds. So I’m trying to do the liquid diet till my surgery even though my doctor didn’t tell me I needed to it. I’m just nervous day of they’re going to be like nevermind lol but the doctors office said I’m approved and it should be fine. Thanks for letting me vent lol

  6. Hey all, So I got my insurance approval and have surgery this Thursday, August 13 and my doctor is not requiring me to do the liquid diet. I had one last get together, plus my time of the month, somehow gained like 10 pounds from my original weight. I’m so upset about it. But my pre-op appointment is at the hospital this Tuesday and worried about my weight gain. I’m doing the liquid diet on my own starting tomorrow. When I called my doctors office they said it should be fine. But I’m still nervous, has anyone day of surgery denied? Thank you!

    No longer obese!

    Congrats! You'll reach your original goal before you know it! 😊 I, myself, have low standards and just want to be in the overweight category as I've been obese since I was in elementary school. Right now I'm the smallest I've been in 19 YEARS as I was 14 the last time I was 235! It honestly blows my mind and the fact that I'm even in a smaller size than I was when I was 14 is even odder to me. (I was a size 20 in pants and a 2x in tops when I was this weight at 14, but now I'm an 18 in pants and an xL in tops). There's also the fact that I hadn't been under 300 pounds since I was 17! I'm grateful every day that I made the decision to have this surgery... I put it off for far too long!

    Yes, sizes are noticeable more quickly too! I feel like I just got in to my size 12 jeans and most pairs I have are already saggy in the waist. I’m only going to buy a couple pairs of pants in 10 since who knows where I’ll be after my tummy tuck. I’ve only dreamed of hitting single digits, but it now seems totally doable :)

    Clementine welcome back! I think a BMI of 26 is generally pretty good considering most of us started at 45+!! Keep up the hard work. It IS hard work. For life. I am also not one of those lucky ones who lost the weight and never looked back. But I refuse to let my weight win, and I refuse to have had this surgery in vein. I am focused and on track. Julie, good to hear you're also keeping focused, 10 pounds is very achievable and you know what to do.
  10. Adding to the above, I agree 10 minutes is a good start! Sometimes it’s easier to fit in/do 10 minutes several times a day rather than one long walk. Do you think it might work to ask your husband to help you? Instead of focusing discussions on him or “we”, try “Honey I’m really worried and stressed that I’ve been slipping in my plan and have gained a few pounds. Could you help me by keeping x, y, and z out of the house or at least keep it where I can’t see it?” Best of luck to you, I also agree that seeking out help , asking for support, and working on a plan is an awesome first start.
  11. You can absolutely find positive support here and I am sorry that you have had an encounter with New&Improved. His toxicity is a serious detriment to these forums and I urge you to ignore him. I've very sorry that you're not getting the support from your husband and that it's making things difficult. It's definitely not too late to turn things around, even with the chaotic state of the world. The fact that you've acknowledged that you need to make changes and have begun to make them is an amazing step in the right direction! I've been in the same boat with the exercise portion of my post-op routine. Between some persistent light-headedness and the stream of 90+ degree days, my efforts to walk 30 minutes a day generally have only been for 10 minutes. That might be a good place to start for you as well. It may not be 30 minutes, but it's still exercise and gets the body moving and burns some calories. Food logging is definitely going to help. I've been using the Baritastic app since I started in my weight loss program in February. It's been a definite boon and I highly recommend it. I wish I had some advice on what you can do to get your husband to be part of the process again. Maybe leading by example might get him back on track? You've got my support on this, as well as the support of many others on this site! You can do this and you're going to kick butt doing it!

    How did you pick your doctor?

    I had my gallbladder out in January and the surgeon said my liver looked really bad and recommended wls. He referred me to a surgeon, who I saw in March. Then COVID happened. I had my EGD with that surgeon in May, and right after that the hospital cut a lot of staff, including my bariatric surgeon. My cousin had RNY 10 years ago and I ended going to the place she went. I saw my surgeon June 15th and just had Loop DS surgery July 24th. I'm very happy with the surgeon I ended up going with! Sent from my moto g(6) using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food stuck in throat

    I had a sleeve surgery in July 2019 and within the first two weeks it felt like I had a piece of hamburger stuck in my throat and could not get it cleared. It stayed that way for months. I ended up with additional issues that caused me to have a revision from a sleeve to a gastric bypass in February of 2020. (I am not saying you need to have anything changed just explaining my journey). In the process to having the revision my dr did a scope of my throat and almost immediately after that the closed up feeling of my throat and “stuck” food feeling went away and has not bothered me again. I would strongly suggest you speak to your team and explain what you are going through. I can Not emphasize enough the importance of getting your nutrition in and know how difficult that is going to be if you can’t swallow.
  14. I have been at 650-800 daily since week 3. The Nutritionist for my surgeon said that was fine and that I was losing at a rate greater than the average (she said at 4 weeks the amount expected is 10-25 lbs, I was at 22 lb and at a 35 bmi which is the lowest BMI to have WLS). She said it was not that they wanted people to eat very few calories, it’s just some people were sick and nauseated so often they could not actually eat more. She said it was positive that I had not been ill and could take in nutrients (since just getting in 64g protein requires consuming a decent amount of food).

    I have a ton of protein powder - I'm sure I have 10 canisters in my cupboard and a bag or two in my oven (I store things in my oven when I'm not using it so the cats don't get into it!!)

    I may have a small problem...

    I’m currently on my second round of pre-op diet as I had a VSG in December 2019 and am having a revision to RNY in a few days but over the last year I’ve amassed quite a collection of protein powder and drinks. I’ve gone through 2 other 2lb tubs of the syntrax nectars and I’ve lost count of the protein shakes. But yeah, I may be hoarding protein powder and shakes. Anyone else do this? I need to know I’m not alone. 😂

    Is anyone else as disappointed...

    I am 10 years out. Gained some back but maintained a 100 pound weight loss.... now have tackled the re-gain and have lost 41 pounds of 40 regain. AND SOMEONE COMMENTED HERE THAT I SHOULD WEIGH LESS. I had to laugh. I mean really laugh. He is young, male, and has NO clue what anyone else deals with. Take away information that is helpful, add to other's journey with concern and maybe a suggestion about what works for you. Try not to compare yourself with anyone except to your "old self" Celebrate EVERY Victory Be Yourself and DO YOU. BTW - TODAY - I am celebrating by taking Three HUGE bags of PLUS SIZE clothing to the Women's Shelter. GONE AND DONE. NO MORE SIZE 20/22. Back to ladies petite size 16 - or regular ladies size 14. I only look at 5 pounds at a time. Sometimes less. And I celebrate every 1/2 pound now !!!
  18. I was a slow loser. I had surgery Feb 5, 2019 and I really wanted to be down to 200 pounds by my vacation in early June. Well I had only lost 40 pounds by then. I was disappointed. I only had 2 months of 10+ pounds weight loss. Every month was more like 8 pounds. In October I complained to my surgeon and he added up the numbers and the time frame. And I had lost 86 pounds in 9 months. By the 1 year mark I had lost 101 pounds. I’m happy. Weight comes off slower now but I feel great. What helped me more than anything was my measurement log. I measured every other week. I also had to leave Bariatric pal for a while. I am in a group with others who had surgery the same month as me. One of the ladies started doing the whole “omg I can’t stop losing weight I’m so skinny now” Crap at 4 months out. It really messed with my head. Walking away from the group for a few months really helped.

    My lap band removal

    It's always a good idea to talk to your surgeon when you have more pain than expected and the swelling you describe so they can confirm if you need to be seen. I had my band out in August of 2019. For me, my incision where the port was removed was larger than when it was put in. I also had a small hard section there for a while - maybe the size of a ping pong ball --- my Dr. told me they pull the tubing and all out through that area. I also recall it taking a 3 or 4 weeks before the pain went away completely but it was never significant --- I didn't need anything more than OTC painkillers.

    Pandemic Check In

    For those struggling with job loss, or trying to juggle raising children at home, having to homeschool those children, provide 3 meals and snacks a day for the family.... caring for elderly parents or relatives, and now becoming a full time teacher AND working full time -whether from home or having to go to work...... my heart goes out to you !!! I am high risk - life long chronic asthma and I am 64 years old (young) - I raise hens for fresh eggs, organic garden, work full time in Social Welfare and have a 20 something who has some issues that keep her from working right now too.... But I eat better now than ever - partly due to the garden getting daily care from me as I work 3 days from home and 2 in the office or field. Wearing PPE is hard. But a mask and face shield remind me not to snack at work !!! I consider myself very lucky - I have a garden to work in, and access to the outdoors where no one else is. I am not one who has ever been able to really exercise, but I keep active gardening and doing household chores. I made a commitment to lose weight since July 2019. Working on pound #42 right now. Take care out there everyone. Right now, "success" is staying healthy.

    There are different types of weight loss surgery. The two that predominates are : sleeve and RNY gastric bypass. They are different types of surgery and produce different types of results. In RNY weight loss happens very quickly and almost effortlessly. In sleeve, weight loss is slower and takes quite a bit of effort to stay on track. But sleeve patients can achieve the same result in weight loss as RNY patients. But the speed of weight loss is not the main issue. The main issue is that once you achieve weight loss, keeping the regain under control. What really matters is the success of maintaining the weight loss long term 5 or 10 years down the road. THAT IS WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT! ----------------------------------------------------------- According to the rules of BariatricPal: Weight loss surgery “bashing” is absolutely prohibited. This include, but is not limited to, statements that a specific type of weight loss surgery is: Bad or wrong Easier than another type of weight loss surgery or “cheating” when someone is trying to lose weight Out of date or obsolete Doomed to failure In addition, “bashing” of individuals is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, statements that a person is: Lazy for choosing one type of weight loss surgery over another Unprepared for or undeserving of weight loss surgery because of Deserving of complications or disappointing weight loss because of their choice of weight loss surgery Please abide by these rules. _______________________________ I am locking this tread because it has deviated from the rules.

    Is anyone else as disappointed...

    It can be so frustrating when it is not dropping off as fast as either you believe it should, or compared to other people's experience. I am older (61), have crappy knees and a long time thyroid condition, so my expectations going in were tempered by those realities. I'm 6 months out and have lost about 50 pounds since the surgery, 60 including the pre-op. I found when I hit about 40 pounds down people really started to notice, and that gave me quite a little lift! (Even though I told myself and everyone else "I'm doing this for my health", it is still nice to hear, lol). I just went through a 3 week stall, I only lost 1.5 pounds in the entire month of July! However, I was getting smaller. I have never been big on tape measures, but I noticed my new clothes were getting looser! I've now lost almost 5 pounds in a week, so there you have it. Water, water, water, walking and some weight training is what I tried to do to keep sane during the stall. Everyone is going to lose at their own rate. If you are like me, the sane part of you knows that with your calorie and activity level you are going to lose weight, but it almost seems impossible! I have a friend who started weight watchers in January, and I had the surgery in February. She lost more weight than I did until March. Slowly her weight loss slowed to a stop, and mine has kept going. She has put back on over 5 pounds. I'm not judging, not at all, I have been on that yo-yo ride for years. I'm just pointing out that we all know you can lose weight without this surgery, and most of us have many times over. I am hoping that the physical restriction, coupled with the mental work I am doing now, will make me successful 2 years and 10 years and 20 years from now, and unfortunately due to whatever makes me tick that did not happen with traditional diets. Sorry for the wordy post, good luck, hang in there, and I'm rooting for you!
  23. Well, that was quite the start to the morning this weekend.  How's everyone doing?  What are your plans for this weekend?  I'm going to go have some responsible and social distanced hangout time with my best friend and her dogs, all of whom I haven't seen in half a year because of COVID-19.

  24. There are many factors that can contribute to this. Starting weight, height, age, gender just to name a few. I’m in my 30s and I ended up losing 70 pounds my first year. By week 10 I was only 27 pounds down :( I was a slow but steady loser. It really takes time to really see the progress. Just keep following your meal plan, drink your water, and cardio. The weight will fall off. For me what really helped was intermittent fasting. It’s a life changer. Look it up. It really helped me during my stalls. You will get there!!!!
  25. I feel all your frustration. I am eating about 500-600 cal/day, and I have lost 1.5 pounds in 10 days. Today is 28 days since my surgery. I didn't know it was physically possible for the human body to not catabolize its tissue in what is essentially starvation. How does it do it? It goes against the laws of physiology. I religiously track every morsel that goes in my mouth, and try to add more calories, but my sleeve revolts and up it comes. I can't eat pureed chicken, tuna, eggs, and if I eat more than a few ounces of greek yogurt that makes its way up as well. I've vomited every day for the past 4 days, and sometimes several times a day. Literally the only thing that goes down easy are protein shakes, thin sugar free pudding or creamy soft cheeses, in small amounts. I'm so ready to start working out again, and started doing physical therapy for my back this week, but I'm so exhausted from the lack of calories that I can't keep up with even wimpy exercise now. So sorry for the venting here, I'm also getting insanely depressed about all this. Again, I apologize for unloading on you guys but there is no one I can talk to about this. Thanks for listening
