    Hi :-)

Hi Cori. Welcome to LBT and congratulations on getting your surgery date. It will be here before you know it. I am excited for you!! I was self-pay too and it is a much easier and shorter process. It sounds like you've got a wonderful support system and that is so important!! I have a family that has helped me too - we are lucky, aren't we? I have high blood pressure and just this week, my doctor cut my meds in half and said she doesn't think it will be long before I am off of them completely. Most of us have some medical issues and losing this weight and being healthier is what it's all about!! Good luck to you. Keep me posted on your progress. Becky
  2. Got on the scale today and I am up 4 pounds from last week!!! CRAP!!!! Is this normal, does this happen, how can I not freak out about this?? ???? My brain is going crazy with a million thoughts. Did I stretch my pouch, can I eat more than I should, is this my fault from eating something a little too calorie high? Did I not exercise enough? I feel like I want to cry
  3. Hi everyone! I was banded on December 3rd and I did a pre op diet for two weeks as well as a three day liquid pre op right before surgery. My doc didn't require the two week, but from what I read it seemed it would make it easier on my body. I lost about 10 lbs doing that and then I have lost another 15 since the day before I was banded. I am pretty stoked. However, I have read A LOT on here about how you shouldn't focus on weight loss in the beginning. I know that now is a time for healing. I have been taking it easy and following the diet regimen I was given. But I guess I am nervous. I have read that I should anticipate a gain when I am given the okay for more solid food. So can you guys give me an idea how much I may gain back? Is it a definite that you gain back some? Because I plan to eat the same type things I have been, just not blended. Anyhow, please share your storeis! Thanks! ~Mya

    Smell and taste

There are many senses that will go through changes as you lose weight. Your body is going through huge hormonal changes and those can cause issues with smell. Similar to a pregnant woman. It should subside as your nose gets back on track with things. Tastes will change too in case you haven't noticed that.
  5. Hello; I am being submitted for approval tomorrow and am concerned because I was told that Medicare requires among other things, 5 years worth of doctor notes with weight information. Like many overweight people, I didn't like to be weighed. So for my notes, I only have the last 3 years notes with weights and the first 2 years it says I refused to be weighed. Has anyone else run into this particular problem? I was told that some insurance companies will take pictures if the date of the pic is shown on the pic. I am hoping not to be denied, but was wondering that if they are a stickler for this information, what can I do. I cannot speak to the pre-cert department with United Health Care as they will only speak with the provider. Member services is just telling me to wait until the information is submitted and see if they contact my doctor for more information. I am really started to stress over this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. K

    Newbie But Not Sweating It.

Hi Patti ! I was also banded by Dr Lopez-Corvala on 8/19/11, also great experience, specially that it was my first surgey ever !!! Are you also going back to get your adjustments there? Since my surgery I've only needed two adjustments, I'm down 69 lbs and down from a size 20 to a size 12 I'm working on dropping another 20 lbs to be in a normal BMI. Good luck on your weight lost journey!!! Lunad
  7. Congrats on having a date for your sleeve! You are wise to start to make changes now. I really did not do much in the way of dieting before getting sleeved and I so somewhat regret that (especially when I see someone's ticker who has a surgery date near mine and they have 2x the amount of weight because they dieted BEFORE the sleeve!) I could not let my BMI drop below 40 to be covered under my insurance, so mentally that just gave me a reason "not" to diet. BUT, the changes that I did make before getting sleeved were these: I dropped the diet soda habit. I didn't have a problem doing this (I used to drink 1-2 diet sodas per day) and back in July I quit buying soda to have in the house. So it then became an occassional treat when I would be eating out. Then sometime in early Sept. I just quit. (AND YOU CAN DO THE SAME WITH THE SWEET TEA! I would start by decreasing the amount of sugar you put in your tea, or switch to Splenda.) I also quit the coffee/caffeine habit. (beware because even regular non-sweet tea has caffeine...and I love non-sweet tea but not the caffeine.) I switched my coffee to decaf before surgery and didn't have coffee for 4 weeks post-surgery. I also decreased my carb intake. Just little changes. Instead of eggs and toast, I would drop the toast. I got in the habit of not drinking with my meals. I started taking my Vitamins BEFORE surgery to get me in the habit of taking them daily. I already was a regular exerciser, so I didn't have to do much there, but if you do not exercise I would recommend starting something you can stick with. Just even starting to walk will help you recover post-surgery, and walking is not only good, but necessary post-surgery to help prevent blood clots. THIS WILL BE AN AWESOME YEAR FOR YOU!!! I think attitude and gratitude makes a huge difference in this whole process. Going into this with the right attitude and having gratitude that you are being given a opportunity to change your life will carry you far! Good luck with everything!
  8. My PCP mentioned it the other day. I also have a long time friend who I have shared many things both good and bad with and she mentioned it to me last week too. No it has not been all rosy. My friend said that last week after I was talking about being in a slump and having to refocus. I have told some people out of all the weight you lose, the most important loss is between your ears. Good Luck to All
  9. OMG. I heard the same thing from my husband. I lost a lot of initial weight from my face and I look so much better..younger. My skin is fantastic...healthy eating and portion control works. I love my band and I should have done it sooner. I really feel more energetic now.
  10. At 3 months out I wake up with gross breath fairly often still. I think it is ketosis as well. I just carry mouthwash around and I also brush more often. It's yucky but I'm dropping weight so I'll deal.

    Love my lapband

Hi Steve. Congrats on your weight loss. I have had a hard time not drinking when I eat. It is a hard habit to break but I keep working on it. Donna

    Ugh! Gained! Help!!! :-(

I follow that same path of weight loss as dhales. I was at 192-194 for 10 days, then over one weekend I dropped to 188. Now I flirt between 188-192 for the last week. So if the trend continues, I'll drop to 185 and hang out between 185-188 for a few weeks. I used to sweat it but not anymore. tmf

So... 2011 In Restrospect. How Was Your Year?

Great post Rootman, and well, what a fantastic year you've had. 2011 for me was a double sided sword... a roller coaster ride for sure; both in the world of weight loss and on a more personal level. My highlights are: I turned 40 in April.... that was an ouch moment ... lol I am lighter now than I have been in 15 - or so - years I am fitter now than I have been for 17+ years; I can run for 50 mins on the treadmill and keep up at the boxing gym with the lightest! I don't feel 'out of place' in the world of exercise I am feeling more confident and although I have a little way to go, I can, at last, see the finishing line I feel more secure in being 'me'! And... I can now take a compliment by just responding with a 'thank you' instead of putting myself down. Phew... what a year ... bring on 2012!

So... 2011 In Restrospect. How Was Your Year?

Love this topic! For me, like the rest of you, 2011 was a banner year. January to February I spent going through the motions and various required visits for insurance to cover VSG. This included various freak outs as to what I was doing and if I would ever eat normal again. March 1st became an icon date in my life when I had surgery. I literally feel my life should be measured pre and post VSG. I lost weight very quickly- more than 50 lbs. in two months. As I dropped weight I found a level of confidence that I am not sure I have ever possessed previously. In June, I applied for a position on a lark that seemed waaaayyyy out of the realm of possibility. Well, the confidence came through and they hired me! In July, I decided it was time to pursue a goal that I secretly thought unattainable and signed up for a 1/2 marathone training program even though I could barely run a mile. Two weeks ago, I ran 14!!! Over the course of this year I have lost 111 lbs, and gone from a tight 24 to a solid 14 (and sometimes 12). Heck, I even lost a shoe size! This year has been equal parts amazing and terrifying. I am not sure I ever realized how scary it would be facing food demons and embracing all that I have to offer the world. Have you guys noticed that too or is it just me? Regardless, yay for us!! Amanda

So... 2011 In Restrospect. How Was Your Year?

Some of my highlights have been: March 2011- went on vacation to Sao Paulo Brazil- saw one of my exchange students get married there and visited with a second one! So awesome... Got the pics back to realize that I was morbidly obese and didnt look anything like I thought I did! I knew then I had to do something more drastic. Wasted the summer in self pity over my weight and gained the 20 pounds I had lost for the Brazil trip back in quick order. My husband landed his first teaching job and that changed our insurance which led me to check on wls again. I had already been to a siminar in April but didnt like the surgeon or his staff. So here it is late July and I discovered our new insurance covered wls. I went to seminar the next day with my hubby. CHANGED MY LIFE! I loved the surgeon and staff but my insurance only covered vsg of bmi 5o or higher and i was 40.2. A really nice man said to me... just self pay and get it over with.. screw the insurance.. they have payment plans with no interest! Thats exactly what we did! I was sleeved the following Monday August 8th. I have lost 56 pounds since then. I went from a size 20 (tight) to a size 12-14 depending on brand. I went from 1x shirts to M-L. I went from size 9 panties to a 7. I went from a size 40C to a 38C in bra's. I am in the 170's which I havent seen in 5 years. I feel so much better already! ALL THIS IN LESS THAN 5 MONTHS!!! 2012 is my year reach goal and become a runner! My sister told me once that I would never be as thin as I was in college and I am out to prove her wrong! 135 or less, here I come! I am planning to go back to Brazil in 2013 and visit my family and friends there so I can make new and better pictures that I can be proud of! I also graduate from grad school then too.

So... 2011 In Restrospect. How Was Your Year?

Most of 2011 was a total loss for me. I was sort of in a funk with everything. I didn't do anything most of the year. I mean nothing. I started a highly stressful job back in december 2010 which has sucked the life out of me but I couldn't find a new one even though I have really tried. I gained 20lbs this year (up until December when I had VSG) putting me back to my all time high of 320. The highlight of my year has been the entire VSG process which happened very recently. The thrill of finding out that my newly changed work insurance covered it, to the thrill of finding a surgeon, getting my date, and then finally having the surgery. I did all of this by myself. And I'm very proud that I was able to accomplish this. I had been dealing with WLS exclusions in insurance or no insurance for the last 10 years. Then out of nowhere the new insurance change at my job in the fall, allowed WLS. I think 2012 will be my year for sure!
  18. Congrats on getting all of the pre-op stuff done! Really, 2 months is not bad compared to what I see others go through so you are doing great. I am just starting this journey myself. I'm in the process of getting all my past medical records right now. Then, I have an appt w/my PCP on Tuesday to discuss WLS and log in as my first visit for the supervised weight loss I will need to do for 6 months. The following Saturday, I am going to a seminar w/Scottsdale Bariatric Center. I'm not sure if this is the bariatric surgeon that my PCP will recommend, but its a well respected one so I figure it can't hurt to go and get more info ASAP.

    harder then i thought

Where do i start. its is 3 in the morning. i am up,( hungry) arthritis pain is back, swelling, and i have to take my pills to get rid of the arthritis. yaaaaaa!!! banded on June 20th and not happy. i feel i could eat a horse right now. pretty sure the horse will slip through my band too.lol.. my wife tells me to let my stomach heal in place and not to eat all different kinds of food and stay to liquids for 2 weeks. its tough to do i was on a pretty stick diet before surgery to loose weight before it (39 pounds) so far, but now i feel like i can cheat and eat solid food. i feel stupid for cheating. the band is a tool alright!!!:bored: Anyways, my question for today is this i have always over ate. portion size has always been bad for me and now i have this band i feel i might slip back to bad portion size habits. i am not feeling any restriction like my wife did after her band got in place. thats why she is hard on me and telling me to stay on liquids. trying to stay on track but it worries me that portion size might win. i have to figure out when i am full and not Bord or something. don't want to stretch my band. later everyone pills are kicking in and might be able to go back to sleep:sleep:
  20. Well after a month of back and forth calling the doctor and insurance and wrong things being filed - I had a call last week from drs office saying they expect it to be another 20 days till we hear anything and she was going on vacation for a week or so- SO yesterday I thought I would just call my insurance and see if they all went on vacation too- and they said I was approved last week and don't know why the doctors office didn't let me know that- SO after being upset for a while- I finally got ahold of someone at the doctors office and again was told that yet another person in the office is not going to be back in the office till monday to schedule my surgery or let me know what I need to do next- I was upset yet again- but I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason and there is a time and purpose - God works in His time- not mine- right- SO- waiting till Monday to get irrate again- I have been really questioning my motives- why am I doing this- do I really want yet another surgery- am I really that addicted to food- and after watching what I do to myself- Yes I am addicted to food- and found myself just this morning eating a McDonalds burrito and hashbrown and after I was done- and being miserable- I wasn't even hungry- then I got frustrated at myself- I know many of you have all been thru this and know what I am talking about- and in a sence I can see where someone who has not had a weight problem can not fathom what this surgery is about or why we choose to do this to ourselves - I have to have a tool to jerk me out of my rut and say HEY YOU HAVE HAD ENOUGH STOP IT! Ok sorry I ramble- but I think I just needed to get a bit out- to people who are not tired of me talking about the surgery lol. Thanks

    does it matter???????

Aww hun, I know, it is sooooo scarey! I still think that I am going to wake up and be my old weight, what a nightmare! Its good that you getting a personnal trainer, they will know more. Just dont let them try to bulk you up. Mine always did, instead of loosing I would gain muscle but not see a change on the scale! You wont let yourself gain it back, you are a different person now. You know what it takes, you have fought that dragon and slayed it! You are a winner, just keep telling yourself that! Chin up, Deanna
  22. If you're taking metformin, I assume you have type 2 diabetes. I do as well and in May my doc put me on Victoza, which causes weight loss. I lost 15 pounds just from taking that medication (brought down my A1C too)--believe it wasn't from dieting. Just a thought....
  23. While I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, your doctor has a lot to say about whether or not you are approved by your insurance. Your doctor will ask your insurance company if you are covered in the beginning, then you will start based on what they find out. So you have a six-month "medically-managed weight loss" requirement. This means that you must follow what your doctor sets forth for those six months, including any dietician/nutritionist appointments. From what I was told by my surgical team is the doctor will submit a report after the six months and request for an insurance review. The insurance company will review the policy requirements and compare that to the report the doctor sent. If you meet the requirements, you will be covered. Since the six-month "medically-managed weight loss" requirement was not told to you as a specific amount of weight necessary to lose to be approved, you may be good to go with only a few pounds lost. The big thing to get from this is any psychological eating issues taken care of and learn how to portion control and eat healthily. Your doctor will know if you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from losing a bunch of weight, and this will be specified in his report. One thing also to remember here - if your doctor does not think you are doing what you need to be doing to be approved, he will definitely tell you. I recommend asking as many questions as you have to your team and follow what they are saying you need to do. You can do this. It is not impossible or no one would ever go through with it. Many of us have had set-backs, stalls, gains, and frustrating conversations with doctors/insurance companies. It is all part of the process. Nothing you are doing, nor will do is a waste of time - especially if you are doing it for your health. Good luck!
  24. Your Goal Weight... How is it calculated?

My goal weight has changed over the last 2 years. At first I wanted to go from 250 to 125. But after talking to my doctor we decided that I should shoot for the weight I was before I had a baby-160. Not super skinny, but much better than 250. Am I right? When I hit 160 I get plastic surgery, and then I will look slim no matter what!
