  2. I'm 7 months out and no hair loss for me luckily. I use the bariatric advantage multi vitamin and it has biotin in it. I do notice that my hair is growing faster which is bad for my bank account because I have to get it colored more often.

    Pooping

Im doing plenty of moves on puree so far but if i wasnt i would do miralax i used it in the past and you can get by usually with a spoonful in your flavored water a day. I would make sure bariatric nurse knows they may have something else for you
  4. i am currently 23yrs old, 5ft1inches tall and 188 pounds, i suffer from severe depression mostly concerning my weight. i am constantly ridiculed over it from from my family and boyfriends, for an example, a couple days ago my boyfriend went out and got me a little boys costume that was incredibly small on me and made me go out in public like that showing most all of my butt and stomach while his friend laughed at me, my family used to make me run laps around the house and put me on all kinds of different diets telling me i would be beautiful if i losed the weight. i get social security and have been going to counseling since i was very young because of it all. in my life ive tried every diet possible and used to run 4 to 5 times a week. i stopped taking my meds because it kept all my weight on, and ive tried diet pills for the last couple years and my back pain is seeming to get worse all the time. its been nearly impossible to lose weight and ive been running out of options. i was wondering if it would even be worth talking to my doctor about getting some sort of bariatric surgery done to see if that would help. this extra weight is more of a burden than i can deal with.. i also have medicare part a and b and medicaid.

    Feeling So Frustrated!

Once I'd made my decision to pursue bariatric surgery I was discouraged with the series of doctor appointments, lab tests, psych evals and support group meetings that I perceived as obstacles to my goal. I made an excel spread sheet of all my appointments which turned out to be three pages long by my surgery date. However, after a short period of time I realized the benefits all these "hoops" provided. I was 50 years old and had a tip-to-tail physical, all on the dime of my insurance company. I had time to learn about nutrition and to educate the people in my life what I was about to undertake. I talked extensively with friends who had undergone gastric bypass and lap bands over the last 7 years and found that I was given an opportunity to be more involved with my path to health then they ever were. Many tell me that they regret NOT having the "prep" time that was required of me. I took charge of my health and lost 50 lbs on my own prior to surgery which reinforced, for me, that the sleeve is a TOOL . . . it is not a miracle or magic wand to slimness, but simply a tool that will help me maintain my weightloss once I reach my goal. I still have to put in the "work" with or without the sleeve. I have absolutely no regrets having the sleeve surgery (2 months ago) and am truly grateful that I had to journey past all the challenges and obstacles along the way.

    VBG to Gastric Bypass

First of all, I would meet with a bariatric surgeon, not a general surgeon. You want a bariatric surgeon because they see these issues regularly, and are at the top of their game with weight loss surgeries. Secondly, if you live in an area that has a university with medical school, find out which hospital they teach at and find a professor of bariatric surgery that is practicing and teaching. They are on the forefront of bariatric surgery. My bariatric surgeon is a professor and she told me that she does revisions that other bariatric surgeons won't touch. Don't take the general surgeons word for it. Seek second opinions with bariatric surgeons. Best wishes!

    Concerns with gaining

We all have to learn how to make suggestions, but then stand back and let things happen as they will. I'm surrounded by people that all constantly make wrong choices. But they are their own people, and other than helpful pointers, there is nothing more I can do. Your daughter has gone through 2 surgeries. Hopefully she received the nutritional and psychological programs that most bariatric practices require. Mention to her your concerns, write down any applicable phone numbers for her, but as long as she is over 18, there isn't much more you can do.
  8. I got the sleeve and I don’t have heart burn anymore. My mom got the bypass and the Malabsorption is a big issue but as long as you do your routine labs and have a primary who knows bariatrics it helps
  9. Hi folks. I'm Dave, and I'm one of the new guys here. I feel a bit weird right now, because for the last several months I've been researching and working toward getting the vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) surgery. Of the three main types of current bariatric sugeries, that seemed the best fit for me. I'd double-checked with my insurance carrier, and was told yes, the sleeve was covered. So I'd done all my homework, I attended some seminars, got my PCM to refer me to a weight loss surgeon who does my surgery type, and I got myself all psyched up for a marathon appointment with my surgeon and his team. After weeks of waiting I finally saw them yesterday. Things were going great until they said that I must have a misunderstanding. They said my insurance (Tricare Prime) does not cover the sleeve surgery. It seems the insurance agent I'd spoken with had misinformed me. After a bit of discussion and a visit to Tricare's website, it turns out that they're right - Tricare won't pay for it. They'll pay for LAP-BAND®®® and RNY bypass, even stomach stapling (which nobody does anymore) - just not the sleeve. So I had no serious option except to change directions right in the middle of things. And that's how I came to be here. RNY isn't something I'd want to do to myself, so I accepted the band as my only other choice. I mean no disrespect to anyone here, but I feel like I was at a great sale, and they ran out of my selection at the last minute. After all this time of anticipating and studying and planning for something else, all of a sudden I need to go 90 degrees in another direction. Is there anyone here who went through this sort of thing? Did you who chose the band do so after ruling out the other choices? Why? Or was the band your first choice? Can you please help me get my head around why the band is my best option? Help me feel good about this unexpected change. I want to feel great about this, but need some insider knowledge. What do you think? Thanks, Dave

Take a deep breath and------------------THINK! You have to be committed enough, strong enough, informed enough and independent enough to travel your WLS journey ALONE to be truly secure in having a successful journey. When everything and every one around you collapses you only have yourself to rely upon. That/you should be enough to see you through to your new life style and healthier you. WLS is only part of the solution. The rest is up to your BRAIN. Start wrapping your head around that now. Many times a good bariatric therapist is the answer on just how to do that. You have to get any eating disorders/addictions under control and understood BEFORE surgery. And, NO, my friend. Food funerals are not bad. They are a meant to be a final farewell acknowledgement of your eating lifestyle that you are knowingly and gleefully leaving behind. FINAL farewell---just before you start your pre-op diet. ONCE done----not an excuse to binge every time you get stressed through out your 6month pre-op experience. You will have to learn different coping skills. Once again, a good bariatric friendly therapist can be a valuable asset for you. I had a food funeral. I will cherish the memories of that day for the rest of my life. My SO made it a very special event for me ---leaving me feeling much loved and much encouraged as I looked forward to my "new life". Don't let anyone talk you out of that experience. (MHO). Take time to be kind to yourself. Write down your "pros and cons" list of having WLS. Post the lists where you will see them everyday. Read them out loud to yourself. You will build up your self confidence to the level where no matter what ANYONE says, YOU will know that having WLS is the right move for YOU. I look forward to following your SUCCESSFUL and JOYFUL WLS.

    I need your support

I recently enrolled in healthcare benefits for 2017 at my job and they do not cover bariatric surgery. Dr. Maytorena from Long Term VSG is hosting a contest for a giveaway of a free gastric sleeve procedure. We were asked to make a video stating why we needed the procedure and why we thought Dr. Maytorena would be a good doctor. The winner is the contestant that has the most likes on their video via the Long Term VSG facebook page. I need your support by watching and liking my video submission on their page. I have included a clickable link to the post. Thank you in advance for your help! <3 https://www.facebook.com/longtermvsg/posts/10153842916770216?notif_t=like&notif_id=1479520537966154

I belong to few forums (non bariatric) and each of them has its problems with Trolls. Even if the forum requires one to provide bonifide ID to join. Seems some people consider trolling on websites a form of entertainment. Eventually they get banned.

who is having surgery in September?

Deeva1: I had to go to the computer Bariatric Pal site to change my settings. Once you open the page, go to your settings -top right, then edit your profile. You should see a bunch of stuff you can do to your account! I hope this helps!
  15. I have Osteoarthritis in my feet, knees, hips and right shoulder. I had a hip replacement in 2013, that was my "ah ha" moment. I asked my surgeon and PCP about Bariatric surgery and they were both extremely supportive. I need my knees replaced and surgery on my right foot. Though the VSG won't improve the damage already done, they pain has decreased significantly and I can take long walks now. I am 49 and have 70 more pounds to go. I plan on putting off surgery as long as possible. In my opinion, yes, it has improved the pain. I hope this helps some. This forum is an excellent place to ask a lot of questions!

    Off and on.

Hello everyone! Well it has been since April 1st I had my bariatric sleeve surgery. I am 36 years young and hoping to continue feeling better. I went back in the gym, training for two and half months now. I still have a some tenderness and discomfort that likes to pop up every now n then if I go to heavy with weights or eat a little more then I should BUT I manage it by toning it down. I am getting strong again and close to being where I was 7 years ago fit, but not quit near 230 lbs being my normal weight throughout my years. Before the surgery I was weighing in at 430lbs, 4 months later I am weighing in at 325lbs 6ft tall. It feels good bringing out my old close from a few years ago lol. I am thankful things are moving along and hope they continue this way as I stay dedicated to my clean eating and working out healthy living old lifestyle again.............. But My main question is, I was told by another Dr who I randomly ran into on my vacation to San Diego through a friend who is a surgeon, stated that having bariatric sleeve surgery is a dangerousness procedure because the stomach never fully heals and can cause a lifetime possible bacteria infections. Has anyone heard of this??

I think in comparison to a lot of message boards I have been a part of, not always bariatric, this site is actually pretty good and the majority of members are supportive. There are a few that come off as abrasive in their replies, but that is everywhere, even IRL, lol, not just this site. It's helpful to some degree to get others perspectives and opinions, but that's exactly what they are, others opinions, which may or may not be in agreement with my own. That's ok, sometimes it's good to hear differing viewpoints. I think it's a problem if someone is trying to use a message board as a substitute for medical advice or for true surgical support, because some of the advice I've read out there on the web makes me cringe, but as @jenn1 said take what you want from it and leave the rest.
  18. The bike riding only bothers my knee when I try to go up one of the many hills near my house. Not pain as much as I hear it "clicking" and I get off and walk it up I felt really good on the plane, was flying alone with my 8 year-old and just felt happy and capable of keeping up with her. I'm doing pretty well with my protein; I like Think Thin 20 g bars or Premier Protein 30 g shakes for my breakfast then have yogurt for a snack with grilled chicken breast or shrimp for lunch. Some more chicken (deli meat) usually for a snack and cheese or an egg in the afternoon then some other protein for dinner. I usually only have a snack later if I'm low on protein. My daughter recently became a vegetarian so I'm experimenting with meatless options. If you're on Facebook I'm in the group My Bariatric Kitchen - they have recipe ideas and other advice for getting in protein. I use MyFitnessPal to track my protein and have the same username if you want to friend me to see my diary. I've struggled with my water intake but am doing good today - 40 ounces so far. I have a desk job so the steps are harder to come by but hopefully I'll bike tonight. I'm going to try going back to the gym at work and use one of the trainers, just need to start off slow since I'm only at about 1000 calories too. Have fun camping!! Our family doesn't camp (yet) but I'm a Girl Scout leader and took our troop for an overnight in June that involved some hiking and was so happy I could keep up!! Looking forward to more adventures as I become more healthy!!
  19. Just curious, and please don't be offended, by why was the balloon recommended to you when you are only 208 lbs to start? It's usually used a short term procedure for the very morbidly obese before regular bariatric surgery.
  20. Dr Worley at Methodist Willowbrook did my surgery and he was very helpful and supportive during the pre op period and continues to be after surgery. If you're looking for another bariatric team, methodist willowbrook has a great program, I wish you luck and I pray you feel better soon. Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App

    Ulcers

According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. So generally what this is saying is 1) stay off all NSAIDs such as aspirin and excedrin that contains aspirin. 2) use a proton pump inhibitor such as prilosec (omeprazole). My surgeon recommended I take this daily for the first year so that my stomach would heal properly. At the end of my first year I discontinued it. I am now 5 years post-op. 3) make sure you were tested for Helicobacter pylori infection. This is a very common infection, one that is somewhat hidden because of a lack of symptoms. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So my first concerns are not focused on food but rather to make sure you are meeting your daily protein and fluid requirements.

    Psych Eval Worries

Sleeved on 12/10/16. Dealing with severe depression for years and on Wellbutrin prior to surgery. My psych evaluation was very easy. 15 minute convo and leading questions about having a support network in place and managing your expectations. I stressed it to no end beforehand though, so I understand how you feel. It will go fine if you stay positive and even keeled. And the depression will improve dramatically within your first month after surgery if your experience is anything like mine. I stopped taking antidepressants, at least for now. That said, I explored bariatric surgery once before in 2014 with another surgeon. And I got as far as the psych evaluation in that program and he wouldn't clear me. At the time I was at my lowest depression and actually thought about suicide often. For his evaluation I had to do a two page questionnaire on my mental state before we spoke. I was brutally honest on the forms and it got me into trouble during the interview. He refused to give me the clearance and I was so discouraged that I gave up on all of it for 2 years. I thought being honest with "my doctor" would be fine, but his primary interest was actually protecting the program and the surgeon more than doing what was best for my health. He rationalized it that my emotional state could be too dangerous and risky after surgery if I experienced additional depression due to lack of ability to eat. I argued that the surgery was the best option to improve the depression and that he had a duty as a doctor to see that. He refused. My primary doctor yelled at me for being too open and honest about the depression. So just be careful what you say. Stay positive all the way. That you are eager to have this tool to help you reach your goals. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    moderators or someone

It's funny but the coordinator of the bariatric program where I had my surgery called just yesterday to ask me how I was doing. Two of the questions she asked was "how much can you eat" & "are you feeling full?" I was banded on June 8th and have been on full liquids this whole time. I have not had a fill. So basically she was saying the opposite of what you all are saying. The issue here is that I was the second person they banded, the first person they did an hour before me. I figured it was ok to be done on their first day because a rep from the company that makes the band would be in the Operating Room. Now I am slowly but surely finding out that there are many reasons that you shouldn't be first.

Blue Shield of Ca six month diet

@@Chloewithac Talk to your Bariatric Program - I did my supervised diet with the Nutritionist (supervised by surgeon). I have BCBS in another state and they were not forthcoming with what the requirements were either. Your surgeon's office should be able to find out. I didn't need authorization for the Consult - just for surgery.

    Awaiting approval....

i can understand the frustration as well. I started this journey with my seminar last December, made it through the 6 months of the doctor diet and then struggled with my doctor to get the paperwork turned into the surgeon's office so it could be turned in to insurance. Was finally turned into insurance last Friday (Sept 25th) and waiting for approval. It's been a long wait since December! I'm so ready to go with this! This is the first year my insurance is covering bariatric surgery so it's kind of scary to know if they will actually cover it or not. Good luck to you both It will be worth the wait, right?? Julie
