Hi TJ! I'm three and a half weeks out and pretty much back to normal other than a little residual pain behind my big scar. Come share on the November buddies thread - we're all pretty much at the same stage as you. Your loss is brilliant - I know we shouldn't compare ourselves but it's way better than mine! 💪

I was 6 months out before I felt any kind of restriction. In that 6 months, I felt like I could eat a whole hamburger so I would eat half and still be hungry so I would finish it. I would have shakes after my fills because they are soft and easy to get down. I just made a lot of terrible choices I hope you don't make. Just eat your 3-4 oz of food and wait about an hour and then if you are hungry eat another 2 oz's. Pick something good for you like protein. It will stay with you longer. But don't do what I did and take advantage of the band because it will bite you in the butt. I gained 4 lbs in the first 6 months and since have lost 16 but it took me 7 fills to get here. Just don't be so hard on yourself. Some people can follow the diet very easily and I had a hard time with it. Good luck and don't think you will automatically fill something right away when you have your first fill because it took me to get 9cc in a 10cc band to fill restriction. Find a weight loss surgery book from like Barnes and Noble and read it...that is where I found so much information.

Need Help/advice From Old Sleevers - I Failed :(
100%Sleeved replied to Wishful Butterfly's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well first of all I want to congratulate you on your achievement so far. 128 lbs is an AWESOME weight loss. Please don't be too hard on yourself. There is a forum on here called basic boot camp posted by Littlemissdiva which will show you some things you can do to get back on track. I personally will go on a 3 day optifast diet when ever I find myself getting off track and this helps to rejump things for me. I'm sorry I don't have much to offer but I hope this helps. -
2nd fill today, having mixed emotions...
uscgal97 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm excited to get my second fill this afternoon. But, I'm feeling a little anxious about it as well. My weight loss has stalled a bit - i'm ready to begin the journey of losing this weight in earnest. But, I also like having my band that restricts the food intake without the terrible side affects - pbs, getting stuck, etc. Fortunately, I haven't experienced any of these things yet but I'm afraid that this second fill may actually take me to the next level where I'll really have to confront my food issues and slow down my eating. While I know the benefit will be weight loss, the fear of losing normalcy in my life is taking over a bit right now. -
Nannie, first of all congrats on your weight loss! That's awesome! So have you been taking any of the suggested supplements to slow down the process at all?
-
Tiffy, never thought of it that way. I guess I'll just have to be patient and see when or if my hair does fall out! Thanks for the information :-)
-
I brought this up with my doctor at the monthly support group. He said that the hair will fall out if you don't eat enough protein because you hair uses protein to grow but if you don't consume enough, the body sends it to the muscles work. He also said there is no scientific evidence that biotin works. My sister in law had RNY and her hair thinned out and now had regrown back. She had surgery in October 09. Good Luck and get your protein in

Hair Thinning
Oregondaisy replied to Youngandwildresa93's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used Nioxin and it didn't help one bit. All it did was make my hair dry. I lost about 2/3 of my hair and I took every Vitamin and supplement or shampoo i was told about. I got all my Protein in from day one. I've been taking Biotin since 06. I don't know if it helped, but I take it anyway. I have new hair growing in all over the place -

My hair is coming out and I look like a burn victim on my face. Both have been happening about 2 months. I am at 5.5 months post op now. I'm told both revers themselves after a year. I'm going for steroids on Wednesday. I'll ask about the scalp treatment too. I'm guessing it a prescription. -

But they are complex carbs, they aren't going to sit and turn to glucose. I'm vegetarian, most of my Protein comes from beans, it hasn't adversely effected my weight loss in the least. True, but pure protein first. Just quoting the rationale of the NUT

It's all part of the process! Embrace the stall. You don't have another choice. They scale will start moving again, I promise. For goodness sakes, HIDE THE SCALE. Also, stop comparing your weight loss to others. Everyone is different. People like me who have 250 TO LOSE will lose weight initially faster that most people with 80 pounds to lose. What everyone needs to realize is that as you get closer to goal, your loss will slow down. Your body will be fighting to keep the extra weight on. Therefore, if you don't have massive amounts to lose when you start, the weight loss will probably seem slower.

Yes, but it's not from the weight loss, it's usually directly after surgery when we are getting used to our new plumbing. It can be hard to get enough liquid if you're having to take tiny little sips. Try to make sure you are meeting your surgeon's fluid intake (and remember that it's not just water, any liquid including Jell-O counts). You might have to carry a bottle of water and remind yourself to take sips.

I swear by the elliptical. I love it. And recently I've started doing different programs (there is a weight-loss setting, cross country, uphill, etc....they basically offer just varied levels of resistance and challenge) instead of just sticking to one. When I can afford to have a piece of gym equipment in my house, that will be the first one I buy!

I made it to WONDERLAND, so why don't I feel better?
LindaD replied to jtejada's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The mirror - it lies. You are seeing a phantom image. Don't go by the mirror. Don't expect too much. Look for all the ways you life is better because of the loss. My surgery was just days before yours and I have SO many things that are better. THAT is what matters. F%#@ the mirror, ya know? It's not the boss of my feelings. -

I was looking at my chart today. It's been 16 weeks and 20 lbs since I stepped into Onederland. Now at 179 lbs I remember how it did feel. For me it was great. But, remember that there may be more going on that is affecting how you are feeling. Afterall, I'm assuming you are a woman? We do have our yucky moments now don't we??? Give youself a few days for it to sink in. BTW. Don't expect your body to look different to you. I was talking to someone yesterday about that. When I look in the mirror what I see is pretty much the same thing I saw 86 lbs ago. I still have the same rolls, the same "issues" I had but they are just smaller and fit in different clothes. Try to look for the little changes like being able to feel a bone you forgot was there. Does your chair seem more roomy now? Do you use as much of the seatbelt as you used to? What are others saying to you? Surely they are noticing. I think they see more clearly than we do sometimes. Listen to them. At church yesterday I got so many comments on how wonderful I looked. I had seen these same people last week. They didn't gush over me then. What was the difference? I had got a hair cut is all I can think of. It really is the little things. Things that we can't really even see. -

I lost about 50 before the surgery. I have to say I really have not had any restriction yet. I fell this weight loss is all due to me. I go to the gym between 4-5 times a week and I am hungry all the time.... hopefully that restriction will come soon. Luckily I am not frustrated at all. I will look for you for your picture for sure! -
Help me decide please
Ginger Snaps replied to Ahmedchaibi's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
One more thing I forgot to mention in my novel... You should also look at maximum excess weight loss and the long-term success rate -- not just how fast you lose. This is a marathon and not a sprint! -

The bypass you will loose weight faster but if you look long term the weight loss is the same. With less complications. It all depends on your co morbid irises and how n why you are doing this. Do u need results fast to help or are you looking to prevent n eventually get off meds.. Always consult your doctor -

I love your new hair do. You look good! -
Hello everyone! What a wonderful site! My name is Kristi and I am currently in the spiral of waiting for the office to submit to insurance. I started this journey last September. I had to do 6 months of medically supervised weight loss, multiple doctor visits, psych eval, councelling, labs, EGD, xray, EKG, etc. In addition to surgical clearance from PCP and GI doc. All of these steps were completed nearly 6 weeks ago and Surgery office has had all my records for the last 4 weeks. I have called, emailed multiple times with no response until last week when I was told to "be a little more patient", that my file was in a pile of 30 charts waiting to be reviewed by office staff prior to submitting to insurance. This is VERY frustrating to me! I am not sure at this point whether or not I created the timeline in my own head of having a surgery date by end of March beginning of April, but with all that I can do from my side besides wait I feel very helpless. Has anyone else had to wait so long just for the office to submit your file to insurance? Patience has never been a strong suit for me. I guess I would just love your encouraging words at this point. Thanks!

Managing my expectations
joatsaint replied to kimmeesue's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I wasn't a fast loser, so I was only losing 13 or so pounds a month on average. But I was on target for the weight loss speed my doctor wanted me at. The #1 piece of advice is, expect to hit a stall. Especially the infamous 3rd week stall post-op. Most of us hit it, just stick with your eating and exercise programs and the weight will start dropping again. I wasn't able to do a lot of exercise the 1st 3 or 4 months. I had lots of problems with my feet hurting if I walked too far. I started off small and just worked my way up. By the 4th month, I was walking a few miles a day. This is my blog post about my plan to go from 0 to 5 miles per day. http://www.bariatricpal.com/blogs/entry/31216-nsv-2-you-best-step-off-b-hatch/ -
Kaiser Fremont- Dr. Hahn
audaciousmarie replied to audaciousmarie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi @@Phoenix40! So last Thursday I went for my Nutrition/Surgeon/Coordinator appointment. I'll describe each appointment below: First you are weighed in and your height is taken Nutrition: The nutritionist is a very nice lady and she will ask you about what type of diet you have been on (I started following the 1200 calorie diet after orientation). You will have to describe what you usually eat for Breakfast, lunch, dinner, Snacks, etc. She also talks about Vitamins and what type you will need post op (this will depend on if you get the sleeve or bypass) and what to expect as far as diet goes in the first weeks after surgery (i.e. liquids, soft foods, etc) She also informed me about the different types of Protein drinks and answered any questions I had. Surgeon: Dr. Hahn was very patient. He went over my BMI, co morbidities, medications, etc to ensure that I would be a good candidate for surgery. He said it would be my choice whether to go for sleeve or bypass as I would be great candidate for either (I don't have acid reflux). We talked about the differences between sleeve and bypass (right off the bat he discouraged from the lap band so we were in agreement about that). He reiterated that regain was possible with either surgery and so is dumping (so it really comes down to the patient being willing to put in the work to not only lose the weight but keep it off). He went into detail about possible complications withe each procedure (ulcers, reactive hypoglycemia, reflux, etc). He then set a weight loss goal for me. Normally they ask the patients to lose 10% of their body weight but Dr. Hahn only requires a 7-8%, of total body weight, loss. For me 7-8% was 19 pounds (I had already lost 9 pounds since orientation and he credited me so I needed to lose 10 pounds to get a surgery date and 5 pounds to get a psych appointment). The only other requirements Dr. Hahn set out for me, besides weight loss, is attending at least one support group, and an EKG (I already finished my bloodwork). Coordinator: She was very pleasant. She informed of what my next steps to surgery are (support group, psych appointment, etc) and that to be sure I call monthly to update them on my weight and progress. Before the psych appointment each patient must fill out a surgery quiz (located in Chapter 9 of the Bariatric binder) and send it in before the appointment. Overrall it was an interesting yet quick appointment. I was told to expect to be there for 3 hours but for me it was more like 2 hours. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App
